3. PIX: An Instrument to Measure Atmospheric Ionizing Particles Based on a Single MiniPIX Sensor

Abstract

This article presents the PIX instrument based on a Raspberry Pi and a MiniPIX device dedicated to making measurements of ionizing particles onboard stratospheric balloons. The hardware and software parts of the PIX instrument are described. All the characteristics of the instrument are given in this article. The three flight opportunities are also presented, with the associated measurements. The methodology to calculate fluxes based on measurements is explained. In particular, the calculation of response functions of protons, electrons, and photons by using Monte-Carlo simulations, the identification algorithm based on a neural network trained with simulated data, and the calculation of fluxes from count rates are described. Some measurements performed in different facilities are presented. A part of these experimental tracks has been used to challenge the neural network previously trained with simulated data, to check the robustness of the algorithm. Proton, electron, and photon fluxes are presented and compared to the MAIRE model.

Abstract

The single-event latch-up (SEL) cross section of a 16 nm bulk finFET programmable system-on-chip (SoC) is investigated by combining single-photon absorption (SPA) laser testing, emission microscopy (EMMI), and embedded instrumentation. The contributions of different SEL-sensitive areas identified by their current increase, light emission, and functional signatures are measured. The effect of temperature and IO bias is evaluated. The laser results show an excellent correlation with heavy ion data and delimit the origin of SEL in this device by excluding the occurrence of SEL in the core logic for this technology.

Abstract

Radiation-induced attenuation (RIA) based dosimetry exploiting phosphosilicate optical fiber has been established as a reliable and precise dosimetry technique, up to at least 500 Gy(SiO2), in particular in the infrared and visible domains. For lower doses, the larger radiation sensitivity coefficients of those fibers in the visible domain (ξ > 100 dB·km−1·Gy−1) than in the IR domain (ξ ∼ 4 dB·km−1·Gy−1) appear as more appealing. However, in radiation-rich locations the devices are hardly to manipulate and have to be replaced after a certain dose when the dynamic range of the interrogator is attained or when doses exceed 500 Gy. To overcome this issue, we investigate the feasibility to reset and re-use P-doped multimode fiber dosimeters operating in the visible domain through photobleaching. To achieve this purpose, we injected post-irradiation five different 4 mW lasers [1550 nm, 1060 nm, 640 nm, 514 nm and 403 nm] in an irradiated (5 Gy; 10 mGy/s) P-doped multimode OF to evaluate their potential to bleach the visible RIA. With the most efficient laser (403 nm), at least 80% of the visible range RIA is bleached in 2 hours. Successive re-irradiations of the same sample present the same RIA kinetics, confirming that the fiber calibration coefficients remain unaffected by the photobleaching process. Those results open the way to more advanced fiber dosimeter architectures with longer lifetime and higher achievable dose ranges.

Abstract

On the NASA 2020 rover mission to Jezero crater, the remote determination of the texture, mineralogy and chemistry of rocks is essential to quickly and thoroughly characterize an area and to optimize the selection of samples for return to Earth. As part of the Perseverance payload, SuperCam is a suite of five techniques that provide critical and complementary observations via Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), Time-Resolved Raman and Luminescence (TRR/L), visible and near-infrared spectroscopy (VISIR), high-resolution color imaging (RMI), and acoustic recording (MIC). SuperCam operates at remote distances, primarily 2-7 m, while providing data at sub-mm to mm scales. We report on SuperCam's science objectives in the context of the Mars 2020 mission goals and ways the different techniques can address these questions. The instrument is made up of three separate subsystems: the Mast Unit is designed and built in France; the Body Unit is provided by the United States; the calibration target holder is contributed by Spain, and the targets themselves by the entire science team. This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data.

The instrument is made up of three separate subsystems: the Mast Unit is designed and built in France; the Body Unit is provided by the United States; the calibration target holder is contributed by Spain, and the targets themselves by the entire science team. This publication focuses on the design, development, and tests of the Mast Unit; companion papers describe the other units. The goal of this work is to provide an understanding of the technical choices made, the constraints that were imposed, and ultimately the validated performance of the flight model as it leaves Earth, and it will serve as the foundation for Mars operations and future processing of the data.

Abstract

International audience; We investigated the potential of a multimode (50 μ m core diameter) nitrogen doped silica-based optical fiber for X-rays, protons and γ-rays radiation detection and dosimetry. X-rays results confirm that this N-doped fiber presents a strong radioluminescence (RL) around 550 nm when exposed to radiation. The RL observed from a few cm long sample linearly depends on the dose rate at least in the 1 mGy/s to 50 Gy/s range. Low dose rate γ-ray tests demonstrate the radiation detection at dose rate as low as 40 μ Gy/s with a 2 m long fiber sample. This fiber is also associated with an optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL) when exposed to a 1064 nm laser light post-irradiation. This OSL signature provides shortly after the irradiation a precise estimation of the accumulated dose at least in the 1 Gy to 10 kGy range. Under proton exposure, we benchmarked the performances of the N-doped fiber with the ones of a conventional Markus chamber used by the TRIUMF proton-therapy team. This comparison highlights the potential of the small-size N-doped fiber to partially overcome the known limitations of commercial fiber-based dosimeters for medical applications. The obtained results are very promising for the future design of more complex spatially-resolved beam monitoring systems.

International audience; We describe an approach to calibrate SEE-based detectors in monoenergetic fields and apply the resulting semi-empiric responses to more general mixed-field cases in which a broad variety of particle species and energy spectra are involved. The calibration of the response functions is based both on experimental proton and neutron data and considerations derived from Monte Carlo simulations using the FLUKA code. The application environments include the quasi-monoenergetic neutrons at RCNP, the atmospheric-like VESUVIO spallation spectrum and the CHARM high-energy accelerator test facility.

Abstract

The period before 2011 and 2012 LHC operation involved several mitigation actions related to R2E (" Radiation to Electronics ") project [1] aiming at keeping SEE (" Single Event Effect ") failures at an acceptable rate. In this respect, 2012 very successful LHC operation has continued to provide valuable inputs for the detailed analysis of radiation levels and radiation induced equipment failures, confirming the estimates provided in Chamonix 2012. Radiation levels around LHC critical areas and the LHC tunnel were studied in detail and compared both to available 2011 measurements and previous simulation results, as well as put in perspective to future LHC operation parameters. Observed radiation induced failures were continuously analysed and addressed through early relocation measures and patch-solutions on the equipment level whenever required and/or possible. During LS1 all primary mitigation actions will be completed, involving significant relocation and shielding activities all around the LHC and aiming to allow for nominal operation and beyond. This paper will focus on the observed equipment failures, their relation to radiation levels and extrapolation to post-LS1 operation.

Abstract

2011 very successful LHC operation has provided valuable input for the detailed analysis of radiation levels and radiation induced equipment failures. Radiation levels around LHC critical areas and the LHC tunnel were studied in detail and compared to available simulation results, as well as put in perspective to LHC operation parameters. Observed radiation induced failures were not only analysed in detail, but already addressed through early relocation measures an d patch-solutions on the equipment level. Both improvements will continue during this winter shutdown together with the installation of heavy shielding around the RBs and UJs in Point-1. Based on measured radiation levels, calculations for the shielding improvements and expected operational parameters, this paper provides an update on the expected radiation levels around LHC critical areas. It briefly summarizes the already perfo rmed mitigation measures and equipment patches and provides an estimate on expected equipment failure rates during 2012 operation. Required beam and measurement studies are highlighted in order to further improve the predictions of both radiation levels and expected equipment failures, the latter driving the chosen mitigation actions for LS1.

Abstract

This note reports on the commissioning and operation period of the H4IRRAD Test Area in which well characterised mixed-fields are provided for LHC equipment users. In benchmark simulations the mixed-field components were estimated and measured with the H4IRRAD beam and radiation monitoring systems. The radiation monitors, the “RadMons” and beam-loss monitors (BLMs) are the same detector types used for monitoring radiation fluences in the underground areas of the LHC. In the first two irradiation periods various equipment was exposed to irradiation produced by a secondary proton beam of 280 GeV impacting on the H4IRRAD copper target. Measurements compared to simulations are presented that quantify the high energy hadron, thermal neutron and Si 1 MeV neutron equivalent fluences at the given test locations. A crucial part was to calibrate the beam monitoring systems to measure the number of protons, p.o.t., which is outlined using different techniques. In addition, cross-checks of p.o.t. measurements are presented using the beam-loss-monitors which agree well within uncertainties.
