Olivine is an abundant phase of ultramafic and mafic rocks in the earth's crust and mantle. Stony meteorites or stony-iron meteorites like pallasites also contain a lot of extraterrestrial olivines. During atmosphere entry olivine-containing meteorites experience different oxygen levels and intense heating for brief intervals, creating fusion crusts that are a few millimetres thick. As a result, various thermal pathways between the rim and the core are anticipated for meteoritic olivines. This shows different colours in natural pallasitic olivines. We are particularly interested in the effects of environmental variables on both terrestrial and interplanetary olivines, based on terrestrial olivines. Natural volcanic olivines from the 1959 Kilauea eruption in Hawaii, the Aheim mine, Norway, are employed and a stony-iron pallasite (collected 1822 – Atacama Desert). We generate two environments using a gas-tight tube furnace that produces CO-CO2 gas mixes—one in air and the second with a reduced atmosphere (fO210-12 bar). The temperatures range from 950 to 1350 degrees Celsius (i.e. within the olivine stability field). After hand-picking single grains of olivines and putting them in Pt-Rh crucibles for an hour, the samples are lifted vertically out of the tube furnace and quenched in air. EPMA, SEM, RAMAN, and optical and laser microscopy are used to characterise and analyse the samples.Preliminary findings, olivines show thermal stability and have a homogeneous chemical composition both before and after heating. A reduced environmental exposure causes a change in colour, similar to the stony-iron pallasite which will be discussed. In association with those observations, we also see Raman bands nearby 600 cm-1 vanish, and Raman bands show up at 800 cm-1. We will compare these effects in relation to the findings from tests involving air exposure and compare the observations obtained from naturally occurring pallasitic olivines.

We investigated microfabrics of shocked Archean gneisses from two, 10 m-deep drill cores located near the center of the Vredefort impact structure in an area that is characterized by a prominent, long-wavelength negative magnetic anomaly ( 100 µm) ilmenite and magnetite host grains. These fine-scaled veins suggest mobilization of magnetite and ilmenite during shear deformation of host Fe-phases and adjacent silicates, probably associated with frictional heating. Coarse ilmenite has fine-lamellar mechanical twins parallel to {10$$\overline{1}$$ 1 ¯ 1} and single (0001) twins, indicative of dislocation-glide-controlled deformation under non-isostatic stresses related to shock. A few µm-wide magnetite lamellae parallel to {10$$\overline{1}$$ 1 ¯ 1} and spheroidal magnetite (diameter ≈10 µm) within coarse ilmenite document exsolution after shock. Dauphiné twins associated with planar features in quartz imply cooling from 650 to 725 °C after shock, which accords with estimates of pre-impact basement temperatures from petrographic studies. The Curie temperature of magnetite is 580 °C; therefore, the central negative magnetic anomaly was produced as a thermoremanent magnetization acquired during cooling of the initially hot crust. The long-wavelength anomaly was likely amplified by the newly created magnetite that also acquired a thermal remanence. Although the magnetic properties of surface samples are often influenced by lightning strikes, we found no microstructural evidence for lightning-related processes.

Degassing dynamics play a crucial role in controlling the explosivity of magma at erupting volcanoes. Degassing of magmatic water typically involves bubble nucleation and growth, which drive magma ascent. Crystals suspended in magma may influence both nucleation and growth of bubbles. Micron- to centimeter-sized crystals can cause heterogeneous bubble nucleation and facilitate bubble coalescence. Nanometer-scale crystalline phases, so-called “nanolites”, are an underreported phenomenon in erupting magma and could exert a primary control on the eruptive style of silicic volcanoes. Yet the influence of nanolites on degassing processes remains wholly uninvestigated. In order to test the influence of nanolites on bubble nucleation and growth dynamics, we use an experimental approach to document how nanolites can increase the bubble number density and affect growth kinetics in a degassing nanolite-bearing silicic magma. We then examine a compilation of these values from natural volcanic rocks from explosive eruptions leading to the inference that some very high naturally occurring bubble number densities could be associated with the presence of magmatic nanolites. Finally, using a numerical magma ascent model, we show that for reasonable starting conditions for silicic eruptions, an increase in the resulting bubble number density associated with nanolites could push an eruption that would otherwise be effusive into the conditions required for explosive behavior.

Molten siliceous deposits originating from environmental debris such as volcanic ash, pose a severe threat to the longevity of Yttria-stabilized Zirconia thermal barrier coatings (YSZ TBCs). Surface wetting of TBCs by molten volcanic ash, followed by infiltration into the TBCs, leads to both thermo-chemical and thermo-mechanical TBC deterioration. In particular, the consequences of such wetting and infiltration on the thermo-mechanical properties remain unexplored to date. Here, in-situ molten volcanic ash wetting of TBCs subjected to thermal shock at 1300 °C has been performed for the first time. We experimentally characterized the generation of micro-cracks, whose origin lies in the high elastic modulus of the infiltrated region (~262 GPa). Thermo-mechanical deterioration of the TBCs was due to the low fracture toughness and high thermal stresses (~1.67 GPa) evaluated at the infiltrated region, which were responsible for the propagation of micro-cracks in the TBCs. We provide quantification and preliminary interpretation of the thermo-mechanical degradation of TBCs under these common thermal shock conditions.

A new campus for geosciences will be built in the center of Munich, which will also house an innovative exhibition on geosciences, the Forum der Geowissenschaften. A team of scientists, curators and museum educators began planning the exhibition last year.Topics from all sub-fields of geoscience and geoscientific research are to be presented in an exciting and informative way for a broad spectrum of visitors. A catalogue of topics and content for the forthcoming permanent exhibition is currently in preparation. Since the topics that the team of experts find most interesting do not always coincide with the interests of the general public, potential visitors should be involved in the planning process, too. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted. The aim of this survey was to obtain an overview of geo-topics that would be considered particularly exciting and relevant by the future public. The survey should reveal which topics visitors would like to see in the future Forum der Geowissenschaften and which information they expect to find in the exhibition.Existing email distribution lists of museums in Munich, the Bavarian Natural History Collections, the university and other partner institutions were used to call for participation in the survey. The distribution lists used suggest that this survey targeted a field of participants that included the so-called ‘interested layperson’, teachers, and people directly related to geological research.Participants were asked to rate a wide range of topics according to their interest on a Likert scale from ‘very interested’ to ‘not interested’. In addition, open questions asked participants to name other topics they found interesting.More than 750 evaluable responses were received. First results, which are presented here, indicate very heterogeneous interests of the different age groups and professions. In addition, the interest in the different topics can be interpreted in relation to the self-assessed prior knowledge in geosciences but also in relation to demographic data such as gender and place of residence.All in all, the survey provides a comprehensive database that will help to refine the exhibition concept and to design further communication measures. However, the data also stimulates a discussion about whether topics are considered by participants to be of little interest because these topics may have been communicated inadequately and ineffectively to date. If this is the case, the geosciences need to find new, modern approaches to science communication in order to arouse curiosity about these topics, which are often of great social relevance.

Glass fragments (Flädle) in suevites from Zipplingen within the Ries (Germany) meteorite impact structure contain round aggregates of polycrystalline ilmenite with various amounts of rutile, ferropseudobrookite (FeTi2O5), armalcolite ((Fe,Mg)Ti2O5) and titanite (CaTi[OSiO4]). The 10-100s µm sized aggregates often have a thin rim of µm-sized magnetite grains. The ilmenite grains are 5-10 µm in diameter and form an equilibrium fabric with 4-6-sided grains with smoothly curved grain boundaries and 120° angles at triple junctions, i.e. a so-called foam structure. The ilmenite grains have random crystallographic orientations and do not show any internal misorientations. Rutile, typically a few µm in diameter, is associated with similarly fine-grained ilmenite and a high amount of pores. Coarser polygonal ilmenite grains can also show a marked grain boundary porosity. Only rarely in the center of the aggregates, a deformed single ilmenite crystal occurs, indicating that the aggregates originated from shocked coarse ilmenite crystals from the target gneisses. Ferropseudobrookite is intergrown with remnants of original ilmenite grains or secondary ilmenite grains without foam structure. A vermicular intergrowth of ilmenite, rutile, and magnetite can be present at the rim, where armalcolite can be enriched in Mg.We interpret that ferropseudobrookite formed at high temperatures (>1010°C) and reducing conditions from coarse ilmenite crystals originating from the target gneisses according to the following reaction: 2FeTiO3 → FeO + FeTi2O5. Some FeO migrated towards the rim due to the low oxygen fugacity, resulting in the observed porosity. Upon cooling, FeO migration caused ferropseudobrookite to disintegrate resulting in the formation of rutile and ilmenite: FeTi2O5 → FeTiO3 + TiO2. Silicate melt at the contact of the FeTi-oxides provided magnesium to form armalcolite from ferropseudobrookite and calcium to form titanite within fractures. Rapid cooling resulted in a shift in redox-conditions with the formation of pure Fe magnetite from FeO at the rim of the aggregates. Quenching of the system can explain the local preservation of ferropseudobrookite and armalcolite, whereas the ilmenite foam structure formed during back reaction of ferropseudobrookite at relatively slower cooling rates. The different cooling rates in the aggregates can be explained by the locally varying amount of surrounding superheated melt forming the Flädle-structure.

Co-auteur étranger; International audience; Deep-sea submarine eruptions are the least known type of volcanic activity, due to the difficulty of detecting, monitoring, and sampling them. Following an intense seismic crisis in May 2018, a large submarine effusive eruption offshore the island of Mayotte (Indian Ocean) has extruded at least 6.5 km3 of magma to date, making it the largest monitored submarine eruption as well as the largest effusive eruption on Earth since Iceland's 1783 Laki eruption. This volcano is located along a WNW-ESE volcanic ridge, extending from the island of Petite Terre (east side of Mayotte) to about 3,500 m of water depth. We present a detailed petrological and geochemical description of the erupted lavas sampled by the MAYOBS 1, 2, and 4 cruises between May and July 2019 and use these to infer characteristics and changes through time for the whole magmatic system and its dynamics from the source to the surface. These cruises provide an exceptional time-series of bathymetric, textural, petrological, and geochemical data for the 2018-2019 eruptive period, and hence bring an invaluable opportunity to better constrain the evolution of magma storage and transfer processes during a long-lived submarine eruption. Integrating the petrological signatures of dredged lavas with geophysical data, we show that the crystal-poor and gas-rich evolved basanitic magma was stored at mantle depth (>37 km) in a large (≥10 km3) reservoir and that the eruption was tectonically triggered. As the eruption proceeded, a decrease in ascent rate and/or a pathway change resulted in the incorporation of preexisting differentiated magma stored at a shallower level. Magma transfer from the deep mantle reservoir is syn-eruptive, as indicated by transfer times estimated from diffusion in zoned olivine crystals that are much shorter than the total eruption duration. Our petrological model has important hazard implications concerning the rapid and stealthy awakening of a deep gas-rich magma reservoirs that can produce unusually high output rates and long-lived eruption. Sudden tapping of large crystal poor reservoirs may be the trigger mechanism for other rarely witnessed high-volume (>1 km3) effusive events.

The general structural formula for the walentaite group is [((A1yA1’1–y), A2)(H2O)n][Bx(As2)2–x(As3)M1(M2)2(TO4)2(O,OH)7], based on heteropolyhedral layers of configuration [M1(M2)2(TO4)2(O,OH)6], with surface-coordinated species at the B, As2 and As3 sites, and with interlayer hydrated cation groups centred at the A sites. The group is divided into walentaite and halilsarpite subgroups based on T = P5+ and As5+, respectively. Alcantarillaite, (IMA2019-072), [Fe3+0.5□0.5(H2O)4][CaAs3+2(Fe3+2.5W6+0.5)(AsO4)2O7], is a new member of the walentaite group from the Alcantarilla wolframite mine, Belalcázar, Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain. It occurs most commonly as lemon-yellow fillings together with massive scorodite in fissures and cracks in quartz adjacent to löllingite. It is also found as tiny yellow rosettes lining vugs and as spheroids of ultrathin blades. It is associated with scorodite, pharmacosiderite, ferberite and schneiderhöhnite. Optically it is biaxial (–), with α = 1.703(calc), β = 1.800(5), γ = 1.850(5) and 2V = 68(1)° (white light). Dispersion is r > v, moderate. The optical orientation is X = a, Y = c and Z = b. The calculated density is 3.06 g cm–3. Electron microprobe analyses together with crystal structure refinement results gives the empirical formula [Fe3+0.52□0.48(H2O)4][(Ca0.44K0.11Na0.05Fe2+0.24□0.42)As3+1.83][Fe3+2.54Al0.03W6+0.43)((As0.65P0.35)O4)2O5.86(OH)1.14]. Alcantarillaite is orthorhombic, with an average structure described in Imma, and with a = 24.038(8) Å, b = 7.444(3) Å, c = 10.387(3) Å, V = 1858.6(11) Å3 and Z = 4. The structure (wRobs = 0.078 for 651 reflections to a resolution of 0.91 Å) differs most significantly from other walentaite-group members in having an interlayer A2 site occupied. Square-pyramidal polyhedra centred at the A2 sites form edge-shared dimers, (Fe3+)2O4(H2O)4. The dimers share vertices with TO4 anions in the layers on either side to form 8-sided channels along [010] occupied by H2O molecules.

Approximately one third of the worlds known impact structures are formed in carbonate-bearing target rocks. However, the response of their main constituent mineral, calcite, upon shock loading and unloading is still not well understood. Mechanical twins in calcite are described from natural impactites and shock experiments, yet, reliable indicators to distinguish these shock effects from the very common calcite twins generated in tectonites are missing. Here, we present scanning electron microscopic investigations of twinned calcite within calcite cemented brecciated gneisses from the Ries impact structure.Calcite cemented brecciated gneisses occur at several outcrops of the Ries impact structure as well as in samples recovered from depth as low as 977 m in the research drilling 1973. At Maihingen, the polymict impact breccias contain shocked gneiss fragments and various generations of calcite in veins. The occurrence of rhombohedral PDFs in quartz from the gneiss fragments indicates shock conditions of >10 GPa. Coarse calcite grains, representing an early generation of calcite in the veins, show exceptionally fine-lamellar twins, indicating high stress and strain rates. The calcite twins show widths of < 0.5 µm, a high density of up to a few hundred lamellae per mm, and appear to crosscut each other, which has been suggested as a criterion for shock-induced twinning. Furthermore, a high density of sets of planar features occur associated and parallel to these twins, but along which no twin domains were resolved in the scanning electron microscope. Twin systems detected by EBSD measurements include e-twins, common also in calcite from tectonites, and another more rarely occurring twin system, characterized by a rotation axes parallel to and a rotation angle of ca. 35°. A second generation of calcite without twins is represented by elongate palisade calcite, fine-grained aggregates and rims forming sutured grain boundaries surrounding twinned coarse calcite grains. EDS measurements show that these calcite grains contain up to 2.5 % Fe as well as traces of Mn, Mg, Si, Na and Al. In contrast, the coarse twinned calcite is almost pure CaCO3. Whereas the fine-grained aggregates and sutured grain boundaries indicate recrystallization, the palisade grains indicate precipitation from the pore fluid.The twinned coarse calcite grains within the polymict impact breccias are interpreted to be shock induced. As coarse calcitic sedimentary target rocks are not known from the Ries area, they can either represent pre-shock calcite veins within the gneisses or possibly marbles that were brecciated together with shocked gneisses during impact cratering. The second generation of calcite represents post-shock recrystallization and precipitation from a fluid.

Quartz and cristobalite ballen aggregates surrounded by dendritic cristobalite in gneiss clasts of impact melt rocks from the Ries impact structure are analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, microscopy, and electron backscattered diffraction to elucidate the development of the characteristic polycrystalline ballen that are defined by curved interfaces between each other. We suggest that the investigated ballen aggregates represent former fluid inclusion‐rich quartz grains from the granitic gneiss protolith. Upon shock loading, they transformed into an amorphous phase that partly retained information on the precursor structure. Volatiles from inclusions dissolved into the amorphous phase. During decompression and cooling, dehydration takes place and causes fracturing of the amorphous phase and disintegration into small globular ballen, with the fluid being expelled along the fractures. A similar formation of small globules due to dehydration of silica‐rich glass is known for perlitic structures of volcanic rocks. Remnants of the precursor structure are present in the amorphous phase and enabled topotactic crystallization of quartz, leading to a crystallographic preferred orientation. Crystallization of more distorted parts of the amorphous phase led to random orientations of the quartz crystals. Ballen comprised of cristobalite formed from a dehydrated amorphous phase with no structural memory of the precursor. Dendritic cristobalite exclusively occurring at the rim of quartz ballen aggregate is interpreted to have crystallized directly from a melt enriched in fluids that were expelled during dehydration of the amorphous phase., SNSB-Innovativ Projekt Ballenquarz

Future human missions to the surface of the Moon and Mars will involve scientific exploration requiring new support tools to enable rapid and high quality science decision-making. Here, we describe the PANGAEA (Planetary ANalogue Geological and Astrobiological Exercise for Astronauts) Mineralogical Database developed by ESA (European Space Agency): a catalog of petrographic and spectroscopic information on all currently known minerals identified on the Moon, Mars, and associated with meteorites. The catalog also includes minerals found in the analog field sites used for ESA's geology and astrobiology training course PANGAEA, to broaden the database coverage. The Mineralogical Database is composed of the Summary Catalog of Planetary Analog Minerals and of the Spectral Archive and is freely available in the public repository of ESA PANGAEA. The Summary Catalog provides essential descriptive information for each mineral, including name (based on the International Mineralogical Association recommendation), chemical formula, mineral group, surface abundance on planetary bodies, geological significance in the context of planetary exploration, number of collected VNIR and Raman spectra, likelihood of detection using different spectral methods, and bibliographic references evidencing their detection in extraterrestrial or terrestrial analog environments. The Spectral Archive provides a standard library for planetary in-situ human and robotic exploration covering Visual-Near-Infrared reflective (VNIR) and Raman spectroscopy (Raman). To populate this library, we collected VNIR and Raman spectra for mineral entries in the Summary Catalog from open-access archives and analyzed them to select the ones with the best spectral features. We also supplemented this collection with our own bespoke measurements. Additionally, we compiled the chemical compositions for all the minerals based on their empirical formula, to allow identification using the measured abundances provided by LIBS and XRF analytical instruments. When integrated into an operational support system like ESA's Electronic Fieldbook (EFB) system, the Mineralogical Database can be used as a real-time and autonomous decision support tool for sampling operations on the Moon, Mars and during astronaut geological field training. It provides both robust spectral libraries to support mineral identification from instrument outputs, and relevant contextualized information on detected minerals.

Amongst other threats, the world’s oceans are faced with man-made pollution, including an increasing number of microparticulate pollutants. Sponges, aquatic filter-feeding animals, are able to incorporate fine foreign particles, and thus may be a potential bioindicator for microparticulate pollutants. To address this question, 15 coral reef demosponges sampled around Bangka Island (North Sulawesi, Indonesia) were analyzed for the nature of their foreign particle content using traditional histological methods, advanced light microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Sampled sponges accumulated and embedded the very fine sediment fraction (< 200 µm), absent in the surrounding sand, in the ectosome (outer epithelia) and spongin fibers (skeletal elements), which was confirmed by two-photon microscopy. A total of 34 different particle types were identified, of which degraded man-made products, i.e., polystyrene, cotton, titanium dioxide and blue-pigmented particles, were incorporated by eight specimens at concentrations between 91 to 612 particle/g dry sponge tissue. As sponges can weigh several hundreds of grams, we conservatively extrapolate that sponges can incorporate on average 10,000 microparticulate pollutants in their tissue. The uptake of particles, however, appears independent of the material, which suggests that the fluctuation in material ratios is due to the spatial variation of surrounding microparticles. Therefore, sponges have a strong potential to biomonitor microparticulate pollutants, such as microplastics and other degraded industrial products.

The eastern Orhaneli ophiolite in NW Anatolia (Turkey) consists of voluminous dunite and minor harzburgite intruded by clinopyroxenite veins. Harzburgite contains spinel of low Cr# [100 × Cr/(Cr + Al) = 40–45] and diopside of low Al2O3 and TiO2 contents, whereas dunite contains spinel of higher Cr# (62–82) and diopside (blebs) (even more) depleted in Al2O3 and TiO2 (than harzburgite). The concentrations of Heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREE) in harzburgite are consistent with derivation of this type of peridotite from 19% dry melting of a fertile mantle protolith at a MOR regime. Dunites have lower concentrations of HREE than harzburgite implying that dunites were generated by higher degrees (>30%) of (cumulative) melting of the same protolith. Furthermore, the characteristic U-shapes of the chondrite-normalized REE-patterns of dunites indicate the involvement of hydrous melt-peridotite interaction processes in their genesis. Nevertheless, a set of mosaic-in-texture dunite samples contain olivine that has lower Fo# [100 × Mg/(Mg + Fe2+)] and NiO contents than olivine in harzburgite. These dunites are probably of cumulate origin as it is also indicated by their enrichment in Pt and Pd (≤17.92 ppb). Micro-textural and Re-Os isotopic data support that clinopyroxenite intrusions do not have a pure magmatic origin and their formation was partly controlled by metasomatic processes. Overall data indicate that the eastern Orhaneli ultramafic rocks have a complex petrological history including various stages of partial melting, metasomatism and magmatism in an evolving from MOR to SSZ geotectonic setting.

Magma degassing dynamics play an important role controlling the explosivity of volcanic eruptions. Some of the largest explosive eruptions in history have been fed by silica-rich magmas in volcanic systems with complex dynamics of volatiles degassing. Degassing of magmatic water drives bubble nucleation and growth, which in turn increases magma buoyancy and results in magma ascent and an eventual eruption. While micro- to milli-meter sized crystals are known to cause heterogeneous bubble nucleation and to facilitate bubble coalescence, the effects of nanolites remains mostly unexplored. Nanolites have been hypothesized to be a primary control on the eruptive style of silicic volcanoes, however the mechanisms behind this control remains unclear.Here we use an experimental approach to show how nanolites dramatically increase the bubble number density in a degassing silicic magma compared to the same magma without nanolites. The experiments were conducted using both nanolite-free and nanolite-bearing rhyolitic glass with different low initial water content. Using an Optical Dilatometer at 1 bar ambient pressure, cylindrical samples were heated at variable rates (1-30 °C min-1) to final temperatures of 820-1000 °C. This method allowed us to continuously monitor the volume, and hence porosity evolution in time. X-ray computed microtomography (µCT) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analyses revealed low and high bubble number densities for the nanolite-free and nanolite-bearing samples respectively.Comparing vesicle number densities of natural volcanic rocks from explosive eruptions and our experimental results, we speculate that some very high naturally occurring bubble number densities could be associated with nanolites. We use a magma ascent model with P-T-H2O starting conditions relevant for known silicic eruptions to further underpin that such an increase in bubble number density caused driven by the presence of nanolites can feasibly turn an effusive eruption to an eventually explosive behavior.

Biofilm-forming microbial communities on plastics and textile fibers are of growing interest since they have potential to contribute to disease outbreaks and material biodegradability in the environment. Knowledge on microbial colonization of pollutants in the marine realm is expanding, but metabolic responses during substrate colonization remains poorly understood. Here, we assess the metabolic response in marine microbial communities to three different micropollutants, virgin high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microbeads, polysorbate-20 (Tween), and textile fibers. Intertidal textile fibers, mainly cotton, virgin HDPE, and Tween induced variable levels of microbial growth, respiration, and community assembly in controlled microcosm experiments. RAMAN characterization of the chemical composition of the textile waste fibers and high-throughput DNA sequencing data shows how the increased metabolic stimulation and biodegradation is translated into selection processes ultimately manifested in different communities colonizing the different micropollutant substrates. The composition of the bacterial communities colonizing the substrates were significantly altered by micropollutant substrate type and light conditions. Bacterial taxa, closely related to the well-known hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria Kordiimonas spp. and Alcanivorax spp., were enriched in the presence of textile-waste. The findings demonstrate an increased metabolic response by marine hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial taxa in the presence of microplastics and textile waste, highlighting their biodegradation potential. The metabolic stimulation by the micropollutants was increased in the presence of light, possibly due to photochemical dissolution of the plastic into smaller bioavailable compounds. Our results suggest that the development and increased activity of these unique microbial communities likely play a role in the bioremediation of the relatively long lived textile and microplastic pollutants in marine habitats.Graphical Abstract

Knowledge of biofilm formation on pollutants in the marine realm is expanding, but how communities respond to substrates during colonization remains poorly understood. Here, we assess community assembly and respiration in response to two different micropollutants, virgin high-density polyethylene (HDPE) microbeads and textile fibres under different light settings. Raman characterization, high-throughput DNA sequencing data, quantitative PCR, and respiration measurements reveal how a stimulation of aerobic respiration by micropollutants is translated into selection for significantly different communities colonizing the substrates. Despite the lack of evidence for biodegradation of HDPE, an increased abundance and respiration of bacterial taxa closely related to hydrocarbonoclastic Kordiimonas spp. and Alteromonas spp. in the presence of textile waste highlights their biodegradation potential. Incubations with textile fibres exhibited significantly higher respiration rates in the presence of light, which could be partially explained by photochemical dissolution of the textile waste into smaller bioavailable compounds. Our results suggest that the development and increased respiration of these unique microbial communities may potentially play a role in the bioremediation of the relatively long-lived textile pollutants in marine habitats, and that the respiration of heterotrophic hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria colonizing marine pollutants can be stimulated by light.

High-pressure (HP) metamorphism of the Kassan Metamorphic Complex (KMC) in the western Kyrgyz Tianshan has been related to either late Ordovician or late Carboniferous-Permian subduction processes. We report Sm-Nd ages for retrogressed eclogite samples and 40Ar/39Ar cooling ages for enclosing garnet-muscovite samples from the KMC as new age constraints on HP metamorphism and rock exhumation. These data will be used for an upgraded paleogeographic model for late Paleozoic crustal consolidation in the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The retrogressed eclogite samples have transitional alkaline to tholeiitic affinity and trace-element patterns consistent with protoliths derived from garnet-bearing mantle sources at rifting plate margins. Geothermobarometric data for a retrogressed eclogite sample indicate peak-metamorphic conditions of 540 ± 30 °C at 1.6 ± 0.1 GPa. Samples from different lithotectonic units of the KMC provide coherent Sm-Nd garnet-whole rock ages of 317 ± 4 Ma and 316 ± 3 Ma (2σ). The prograde major-element zoning in the mm-sized garnets in combination with the moderate peak-metamorphic temperature, support our interpretation of the Sm-Nd garnet ages as unambiguous evidence for late Carboniferous HP metamorphism. The Sm-Nd garnet growth ages overlap within-error with the 40Ar/39Ar mica cooling ages of 314 ± 2 Ma and 313 ± 2 Ma (2σ) indicating rapid uplift of the subduction complex after peak metamorphism. The ca. 317-313 Ma HP-exhumation event of the KMC is contemporaneous with those of the Atbashi and Akeyazi (ca. 500 km east in NW China) HP complexes and implies similar collision histories at the South Tianshan Suture to the east and west of the Talas-Fergana Fault (TFF). The exhumation of the KMC and Atbashi HP complexes overlaps with the initiation of the TFF (Rolland et al., 2013) suggesting incipient separation of the Chatkal and Atbashi complexes during rock exhumation and early plate collision.

The state and properties of magma, are crucial controls on the eruptive behaviour of volcanic systems. Nowhere is the importance of the link between the state and properties more dramatically expressed than in the rheology of multiphase magmatic systems, and it is magma rheology in turn that exerts a primary control on eruption style. Magmas ascending to shallow levels are subjected to decompression that leads to volatile loss and melt viscosity increase as well as the nucleation and growth of microlites and nanolites. Yet the effects of nanolites on magma rheology have only been investigated to date in a reconnaissance fashion. In order to better constrain the influence of cooling on Fe Ti oxide nanolite crystallisation and silicate melt structure, we conducted magma cooling experiments at controlled cooling rates of 0.1 − 50 K min−1. All experiments were run in air at 1 bar on a Fe-rich rhyolitic magma at superliquidus starting conditions. We analysed the resultant glasses via micro-Raman spectrometry to monitor the structural changes in the melt induced during the transition from a crystal-free melt to a nanolite-bearing magma, as well as the process of nanolite crystallisation itself. The Raman spectral data indicate that nanolite formation together with a concomitant increase in melt polymerisation occur at cooling rates of 0.5 K min−1 or less. The timescales for nanolite formation are estimated to be on the order of 104 s for both dynamic crystallisation and isothermal crystallisation. Our experimental results, obtained at oxidising conditions and slow cooling rates, provide insights into the formation of Fe Ti oxide nanolites and structural changes of silicate melts that can also be observed and are expected in equivalent natural volcanic systems. The higher degree of melt polymerisation and the higher load of crystals both due to the formation of nanolites in Fe-rich rhyolites are likely to cause increases in the magma viscosity. In addition the nanolites likely provide sites for heterogeneous bubble nucleation in these degassing magmas. Taken together these effects may have the potential to shift shallow magmas from an effusive eruption style into conditions favourable for an explosive eruption.

Ikaite (CaCO3·6H2O) is a metastable phase that crystallizes in nature from alkaline waters with high phosphate concentrations at temperatures close to 0 °C. This mineral transforms into anhydrous calcium carbonate polymorphs when temperatures rise or when exposed to atmospheric conditions. During the transformation in some cases the shape of the original ikaite crystal is preserved as a pseudomorph. Pseudomorphs after ikaite are considered as a valuable paleoclimatic indicator. In this work we conducted ikaite crystal growth experiments at near-freezing temperatures using the single diffusion silica gel technique, prepared with a natural aqueous solution from the polymictic lake Laguna Potrok Aike (51°57′S, 70°23′W) in Patagonia, Argentina. The ikaite crystals were recovered from the gels and the transformation reactions were monitored by in situ Raman spectroscopy at two different temperatures. The first spectra collected showed the characteristic features of ikaite. In successive spectra new bands at 1072, 1081 and 1086 cm−1 and changes in the intensity of bands corresponding to the OH modes were observed. These changes in the Raman spectra were interpreted as corresponding to intermediate stages of the transformation of ikaite into calcite and/or vaterite. After a few hours, the characteristics of the Raman spectrum were consistent with those of calcite. While ikaite directly transforms into calcite at 10 °C in contact with air, at 20 °C this transformation involves the formation of intermediate, metastable vaterite. During the whole process the external shape of ikaite crystals was preserved. Therefore, this transformation showed the typical characteristics of a pseudomorphic mineral replacement, involving the generation of a large amount of porosity to account for the large difference in molar volumes between ikaite and calcite. On March 6, 2016 at 21:36:51 UT, extended areas of Upper Austria, Bavaria (Germany) and the southwestern part of the Czech Republic were illuminated by a very bright bolide. This bolide was recorded by instruments in the Czech part of the European Fireball Network and it enabled complex and precise description of this event including prediction of the impact area. So far six meteorites totaling 1473 g have been found in the predicted area. The first pieces were recovered on March 12, 2016 on a field close to the village of Stubenberg (Bavaria). Stubenberg is a weakly shocked (S3) fragmental breccia consisting of abundant highly recrystallized rock fragments embedded in a clastic matrix. The texture, the large grain size of plagioclase, and the homogeneous compositions of olivine (Fa31.4) and pyroxene (Fs25.4) clearly indicate that Stubenberg is an LL6 chondrite breccia. This is consistent with the data on O, Ti, and Cr isotopes. Stubenberg does not contain solar wind-implanted noble gases. Data on the bulk chemistry, IR spectroscopy, cosmogenic nuclides, and organic components also indicate similarities to other metamorphosed LL chondrites. Noble gas studies reveal that the meteorite has a cosmic ray exposure (CRE) age of 36 ± 3 Ma and that most of the cosmogenic gases were produced in a meteoroid with a radius of at least 35 cm. Substitution of In{sup 3+} for Mn{sup 2+} in MnWO{sub 4}, which is one of the most studied multiferroics, was conducted systematically by solid-state reactions at 1050 °C to obtain a series of Mn{sub (1−3x)}In{sub 2x}□{sub x}WO{sub 4} solid solutions (x=0–0.11; the box indicates vacancy). The successful In-doping could be proven by electron microprobe, and statically disordered structures of this solid solution series were elucidated by Rietveld analyses with X-Ray powder diffraction (XPD) data. Its average structure maintains the space group P2/c at least up to the replacement of 33 at% Mn. The tendency of their unit cells proportionally enlarging with In-doping is an unexpected observation because In{sup 3+} is smaller than Mn{sup 2+}. This could not be explained alone by average atomic bonding distances and angles evaluated from XPD data analyses. Complimentarily, micro-Raman spectra of Mn{sub (1−3x)}In{sub 2x}□{sub x}WO{sub 4} materials feature a hardening of Raman modes due to stronger atomic bonds in W{sub 2}O{sub 4} and WO{sub 2} units with increasing In-doping. This is considered as an inevitable consequence of broken bonding in directly neighbouring Mn–O bonds as the presence of In{sup 3+} in MnWO{sub 4} accompanies the creation of defects at Mn sites. The Pozanti-Karsanti ophiolite consists of a mantle unit and overlying crustal rocks. The mantle peridotite is composed of harzburgitic to dunitic rocks that are depleted in Al2O3 and CaO compared to primitive mantle. The low whole-rock Al and Ca values are consistent with the high Cr# [=100×Cr/(Cr+Al)] values of spinel that range from 44 to 70. Raman spectroscopy is a convenient method to classify polytypes plus polymorphs and to investigate different compositions, structures, and modifications of minerals. This information is required to classify meteorites of different mineral compositions. Our intention was to examine different graphite modifications and to determine the opaque phases within the Almahatta Sitta (AS) meteorite. Our investigation focused on specimens AS39 and AS4. Both are multicomponent breccias, composed of different meteoritic lithologies, that is, anomalous polymict ureilite material, different types of chondrites, and an iron meteorite.[ 1-5 ] The mix of material implicates a crash of variable asteroids within time and space. This means that a primary ureilitic asteroid body has been the target of multiple meteorite or asteroid impacts, which did not completely destroy the asteroid but added new material (from chondritic to iron) to the main mass. The boundary between the Gondwana and Laurussia, or a terrane separated from it, is traced by a suture recording the closure of the Rheic ocean in the Pulur, Beycam and Kurtoglu areas of the eastern Sakarya Zone of Turkey. Pulur lherzolite has a lower Cr# [100Cr/(Cr + Al) = 5−37] of the spinel and slightly enriched flat medium-heavy rare earth element (M-HREE) whole-rock pattern typical for those of the fertile abyssal-type lherzolite. By contrast, the Beycam harzburgite displays the mineralogical and geochemical features of a moderately depleted residue at a supra subduction zone (SSZ). Some of spinels from the Beycam peridotites show TiO2 contents (0.15–0.48 wt.%) identical to a later interaction with a melt of island-arc tholeiite (IAT) composition. Meta-basalt from the Beycam area is the representative of such a melt and displays the whole-rock M-HREE pattern of a complementary product of the Beycam harzburgite. Data presented in this study support the primarily northward directed closure of the Rheic ocean, but suggest that the Variscan basement in the eastern part of the Sakarya Zone consists of mantle peridotites formed in a south-vergent SSZ. This dual polarity of subduction in the Rheic ocean, at least in the second half of its closure, is also favored by the geological structure and lithological diversity of the Variscan rocks. These are: (1) spatial distribution of the peridotites, e.g., SSZ-type harzburgites to the north and abyssal-type lherzolites to the south, (2) lack of high-pressure metamorphic rocks, (3) decrease in the degree of Variscan metamorphism toward the north, and (4) emplacement of Variscan syn-collisional magmatism into the low grade metamorphic rocks to the north. Paleotethys was the other ocean of the region created in the Late Paleozoic. Northward subduction of the Rheic ocean from Early Devonian to Early Carboniferous appears to be the most plausible mechanism responsible for the opening of Paleotethys. In this scenario the Paleotethys is envisaged as a back-arc basin opened to the north in the wake of separated terranes from Laurussia. Onset of trench-Rheic mid-ocean ridge collision in the Early Devonian along the northern margin of Laurussia has been proposed to account for the initiation of SSZ-type subduction to the south. The short duration of this subduction appears insufficient to open a fully developed back-arc basin to the south because the elimination of Rheic mid-ocean ridge to the north accelerated the oceanic closure.

The Almahata Sitta meteorite is the first case of recovered extraterrestrial material originating from an asteroid that was detected in near Earth space shortly before entering and exploding in the high atmosphere. The aims of our project within the 2008 TC 3 consortium were investigating Almahata Sitta’s (AS) magnetic signature, phase composition and mineralogy, focussing on the opaque minerals, and gaining new insights into the magnetism of the ureilite parent body (UPB). We report on the general magnetic properties and behavior of Almahata Sitta and try to place the results in context with the existing data set on ureilites and ureilite parent body models. The magnetic signature of AS is dominated by a set of low-Ni kamacites with large grain sizes. Additional contributions come from micron-sized kamacites, suessite, (Cr) troilite, and daubreelite, mainly found in the olivine grains adjacent to carbon-rich veins. Our results show that the paleomagnetic signal is of extraterrestrial origin as can be seen by comparing with laboratory produced magnetic records (IRM). Four types of kamacite (I-IV) have been recognized in the sample. The elemental composition of the ureilite vein metal Kamacite I (particularly Co) clearly differs from the other kamacites (II-IV), which are considered to be indigenous. Element ratios of kamacite I indicate that it was introduced into the UPB by an impactor, supporting the conclusions of Gabriel and Pack (2009).

article i nfo Concentrations of boron in whole rocks and minerals of the peralkaline, 1.16 Ga Ilimaussaq intrusion and its granitic country rocks (South Greenland) were analysed using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNAA) analysis. The intrusion consists of an early augite-syenite shell, a later alkali-granite sheet and still later nepheline syenites, which dominate the Complex. Boron concentrations are high (250-280 μg/g) in all rocks containing fresh sodalite, whereas boron is constantly low in the sodalite-free augite syenites (4-6 μg/g) and in the alkali granites (7-22 μg/g). Rocks with sodalite altered to analcime contain only low amounts of boron (2-7 μg/g), which records boron extraction by late- magmatic fluids. Concentration profiles of B in the analysed minerals (olivine, amphibole, clinopyroxene, aenigmatite, eudialyte, biotite, feldspar, nepheline and sodalite) record magmatic fractionation to various extents, late- magmatic to hydrothermal fluid/rock interaction, and sub-solidus diffusion. Whole-rock concentration data cannot be directly translated into the geochemical evolution of the peralkaline melts, since they are largely affected by cumulate fractionation of sodalite and amphibole and furthermore by late-stage hydrothermal alteration processes resulting in B loss. However, trace-element concentrations of mineral zones representing equilibrium fractionation from magmatic liquids can be used in combination with mineral-melt partition coefficients to unravel the enrichment processes of elements in the melt. Boron isotope values of minerals from the intrusion and the country rocks resemble the trend observed for Li isotopes in an earlier study. Amphibole and feldspar display a clear trend from light boron in the inner nepheline syenitic part of the intrusion (δ 11 B=−20‰ and −17‰ for amphibole and feldspar, respectively)

Titanomagnetites are important carriers of magnetic remanence in nature and can track redox conditions in magma. The titanium concentration in magnetite bears heavily on its magnetic properties, such as saturation moment and Curie temperature. On land and in the deep ocean, however, these minerals are prone to alteration which can mask the primary magnetic signals they once recorded. Thus, it is essential to characterize the cation composition and oxidation state of titanomagnetites that record the paleomagnetic field. Raman spectroscopy provides a unique tool for both purposes. Nonetheless, the heat generated by the excitation laser can itself induce oxidation. We show that the laser power threshold to produce oxidation decreases with increasing titanium content. With confocal Raman spectroscopy and magnetic force microscopy (MFM) on natural and synthetic titanomagnetites, a non-destructive Raman imaging protocol was established. We applied this protocol to map out the composition and magnetization state within a single ex-solved titanomagnetite grain in a deep-sea basalt.

To investigate the geochemical behaviour of argon isotopes during mantle metasomatism and to obtain chronological information on the age of metasomatic events under the Arabian Shield, we analyzed mantle xenoliths and hornblende megacrysts from Saudi Arabian volcanic fields (Uwayrid, Al Birk) applying the 40Ar-39Ar dating technique. Two hornblende megacrysts yield plateau ages indicating formation or total resetting of the K/Ar system 1-2 Myr ago. The ultramafic xenoliths trapped mantle-derived and atmospheric argon in different proportions, resulting in variable isotopic compositions: 40Ar/36Ar ratios range from 296 (i.e. atmospheric) to 10 500, reflecting interactions with isotopically and genetically different fluids and/or melts during recent mantle metasomatism. One such episode of metasomatism led to the formation of Ba-rich phlogopite, which yielded a saddle-shaped age spectrum with a maximum age estimate of 18 Ma. Another episode, inducing formation of secondary pargasite in the lithospheric mantle, was dated to 4 Ma. In the mantle xenoliths the concentration of mantle argon is clearly related to the intensity of metasomatism. Argon extraction by high-resolution stepwise heating allowed us to deconvolve various argon components distributed heterogeneously within single xenoliths and ascribe them to specific carrier phases. Pyroxenes generally preserve much higher 40Ar/36Ar ratios than olivine, as they contain up to 100 times higher concentrations of mantle argon, which also correlates with a higher fluid inclusion content in pyroxenes. Hydrous phases (phlogopite/amphibole) have more variable 40Ar/36Ar ratios. K and Cl concentrations and the argon isotope compositions of the Uwayrid xenoliths indicate distinct metasomatic agents, causing elemental and isotopic disequilibrium on a local scale. On the basis of correlations between Ar isotope composition and K and Cl concentration in the samples most strongly affected by the late metasomatic fluids, we suggest that metasomatic processes in the local mantle occurring simultaneously with the opening of the Red Sea were accompanied by the introduction of saline-water saturated fluids into deep lithospheric zones.

Concentrations of Li, Be and B and the isotopic composition of lithium have been measured in minerals from a suite of dry and metasomatised spinel peridotite and pyroxenite xenoliths from Harrat Uwayrid, a Pliocene–Quaternary volcanic field in the NW part of the Arabian peninsula, developed during formation of the Red Sea. In most peridotites, Li concentrations in pyroxene and olivine grains show significant systematic zoning, with a core-to-rim decrease in pyroxene but a minor increase in olivine. δ 7 Li tends to show a rim-ward increase in clinopyroxene, while it is constant or decreases slightly in olivine. These variations indicate a diffusive transfer of Li from clinopyroxene to olivine during cooling, implying that the partition coefficients K Li Ol/Cpx and K Li Ol/Opx are temperature-dependent and increase with falling temperature. K Li Cpx/Opx , stays nearly constant at ∼ 1. δ 7 Li values measured in virtually unmodified cores of olivine, orthopyroxene and clinopyroxene from three peridotites are similar within individual xenoliths but vary among the xenoliths, with individual values ranging from + 1.1 to + 9.7‰. In marked contrast to Li, the concentrations of Be and B are nearly constant in mineral grains, and apparent inter-mineral partition coefficients for these elements are independent of concentrations and xenolith equilibration temperature. Concentrations of Li, Be and B in minerals of un-metasomatized peridotites are relatively low and are similar to values reported previously. Relative abundances of the three light elements in minerals of xenoliths affected by metasomatism have been used to constrain the nature of metasomatic agents. A preferential enrichment of both Li and B relative to Be that is observed in some xenoliths suggests metasomatism by a hydrous fluid, well below the critical point of the solvus between hydrous fluid and silicate melt. A uniform enrichment of all three light elements shown by other xenoliths points to either a silicate melt at subcritical conditions or a supercritical liquid as metasomatic agent.

The bulk composition (major and trace elements) and the composition of minerals in peridotites of the Ortaca area, south-western Turkey, have been investigated to understand the processes controlling lithological and compositional variations in the dismembered mantle section, containing clinopyroxene-bearing harzburgite, harzburgite and dunite. The Ortaca peridotites vary from almost fertile clinopyroxene-bearing harzburgite (1.92-2.42 wt\% Al2O3, 2.00-2.64\% CaO) with a lower Cr# of the spinel phase (

Harrat Uwayrid is one of several volcanic fields that developed along the western margin of the Arabian plate during opening of the Red Sea rift. Volcanic activity started in the late Miocene and Pliocene with the eruption of alkaline flood basalts. After a period of extensional faulting, numerous cinder cones formed in the central part of the volcanic field during the Quaternary. Xenoliths of both mantle and crustal origin are abundant. The mantle-derived suite is dominated by spinel lherzolite with XMg of olivine and XCr of spinel ranging from 0.868 to 0.911 and from 0.074 to 0.636, respectively. In addition to lherzolite, various types of pyroxenites and wehrlites occur. Most xenoliths contain primary and/or secondary amphibole (pargasite/kaersutite), indicating at least two enrichment events, both related to the formation of the Red Sea. Chemical zonation profiles of mineral grains constrain the thermal evolution of the xenoliths and their source regions in the shallow upper mantle. Ca contents in olivine are constant in the inner parts of the grains, but increase in the outermost zones (< 35 μm). XMg values of spinel grains adjacent to olivine often show a rimward increase in their outer zones (< 150 μm). Both types of zonation patterns are interpreted to result from heating by the host magma during transport. Zonation patterns of Al and Ca/(1 - Na) in pyroxene grains record different thermal evolutions, such as (i) simple cooling, whereby a ’near-equilibrium’ state was rarely achieved, (ii) cooling followed by heating, and (iii) simple heating. Diffusion modelling on measured zoning profiles suggests that cooling lasted for no more than ∼ 10 Myr. Temperature estimates for pyroxene core and rim compositions, calculated by using various pyroxene geothermometers range from ∼ 800 to 1140 °C (at an assumed pressure of 1.5 GPa). In conjunction with upper pressure limits derived from the composition of spinel, these values imply relatively high temperatures for the shallow upper mantle. This is corroborated by P-T estimates for spinel lherzolites obtained by combination of the two-pyroxene thermometer based on the solvus between enstatite and diopside and the Ca-in-olivine geothermobarometer. While the high-T state that preceded cooling was probably a regional phenomenon, renewed heating was of local nature, most probably related to advective heat transport by ascending and stagnating magmas.

Agpaitic rocks comprise most of the exposed part of the 1.16 Ga old, 8 × 17 km large and about 1700 m thick Ilimaussaq intrusion in South Greenland. Within these, more than 600 m thick sequence of sodalite-rich \"naujaites\" (mainly sodalite + arfvedsonite + alkali feldspar + nepheline + eudialyte + aenigmatite) are interpreted as a sodalite flotation cumulate. Sodalites show two to three different zones in cathodoluminescence (CL) and at least two zones in thin sections. The CL zones can be related to chemical differences detectable by electron microprobe, whereas relations with optical zonations are less obvious. Compositional trends in sodalite reflect trends in the evolution of volatile contents in the melt. The sodalite at Ilimaussaq is almost free of Ca and closely corresponds to the pure Na-Cl sodalite endmember with about 7 wt.\% of Cl; S contents reach up to 0.9 wt.\%. Cl/Br ratios range from 500 to 1700. Raman spectroscopy shows that S is present as [SO4]2- in sodalite, although sphalerite (ZnS) is a stable phase in naujaites. Peralkalinity and fO2 conditions allow S2- and [SO4]2- to be present contemporaneously. The whole naujaite sequence is divided into two parts, an upper part with low, homogeneous S contents and Cl/Br ratios in the sodalite cores, and a lower part with strongly variable and higher S contents and with Cl/Br ratios, which are decreasing downwards. The details of the S content and the Cl/Br ratio evolution show that sodalite strongly influences the halogen contents of the melt by scavenging Cl and Br. The naujaites were formed from a highly reduced, halogen-rich magma in equilibrium with magmatic methane at about 800 °C, which, upon ascent, cooling and fractionation, exsolved an aqueous fluid phase. Both fluids were trapped in separate inclusions indicating their immiscibility. Micrometer-sized aegirine crystals and primary hydrocarbon-bearing inclusions are abundant in the crystal cores. The inclusions were trapped at pressures up to 4 kbar, although the emplacement pressure of the intrusion is about 1 kbar. This indicates growth of the sodalite during melt ascent and a very effective mechanism of trace element scavenging during sodalite growth. Sodalite rims are devoid of aegirine or primary hydrocarbon inclusions and probably reflect the emplacement stage.

The Eastern Pontides in NE Turkey is one of the major orogenic belts in Anatolia. In this paper, we report our new Ar-40/Ar-39 dating, mineral chemistry, major and trace elements and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic analyses of the lamprophyre intrusions in this region. The lamprophyres are widely scattered and intrude Late Carboniferous granitoid rocks. The lamprophyres exhibit fine-grained textures and are mineralogically uniform. Hornblende Ar-40/Ar-39 dating yielded a plateau age of 216.01 +/- 10.64 Ma. Based on their geochemistry, mineral compositions and paragenesis, the lamprophyres are classified as calc-alkaline lamprophyres in general and spessartites in particular, which are rich in large ion lithophile elements (e.g., Rb, Ba, K) but depleted in Nb and Ti. Our samples exhibit moderate fractionation in LREE patterns approximately 100 times that of chondrite but HREE abundances less than 10 times that of chondrite. These calc-alkaline lamprophyres display a range of I-Sr (216 Ma) values from 0.70619 to 0.71291 and epsilon(Nd) (216 Ma) values from -1.4 to 4.1, with T-DM = 1.11 to 2.20 Ga. Their Pb isotopic ratios indicate an enriched mantle source. The enrichment process is related to metasomatism of a subcontinental lithospheric mantle source, which is caused by a large quantity of H2O-rich fluids, rather than sediments released from oceanic crust at depth during the closure of the Paleotethys Ocean in Triassic times. All of the geochemical data and the trace element modeling suggest that the primary magma of the calc-alkaline to high-K calc-alkaline spessartites was generated at depth by a low degree of partial melting (similar to 1-10%) of a previously enriched lithospheric mantle wedge consisting of phlogopite-bearing spinel peridotite. The ascendance of a hot asthenosphere triggered by extensional events caused partial melting of mantle material. The rising melts were accompanied by fractional crystallization and crustal contamination en route to the surface. All of the geochemical features combined with regional data suggest that the Eastern Pontides calc-alkaline lamprophyres originated in an extensional environment along an active continental margin throughout the Late Triassic. Such an extensional event, causing upwelling of hot asthenosphere, led to the opening of the northern branch of the Neotethys as a back-arc basin farther south of the Eastern Pontides.
