Studies addressing interdisciplinary research have focused on the challenges of organizing and running interdisciplinary teams, cultural differences between and within disciplines, and constraints in conducting interdisciplinary research. Studies exploring and discussing the process and outcome of transferring observations to notes from an interdisciplinary point of view are not identified. The aim of this paper is to explore the characteristics of field notes created by researchers representing different disciplines and experiences.Methods: A case study using a modified dynamic observation method was employed. The analyses were initiated by a researcher who had not been involved in the data collection. The field notes were analyzed using three main steps.Results: The structures of both researchers' field notes were characterized by similarities in their descriptions, but the notes' foci and analytical levels differed.Conclusion: The findings contribute new insights concerning the execution of interdisciplinary observational studies. Our findings demonstrate that entering the field with different lenses produced richer and more varied data, providing a broader platform from which to discuss and interpret a study's findings. From a theoretical point of view, the findings enable a more nuanced discussion and a conceptual elaboration regarding how observational approaches should be pursued in future studies. On a practical level, the findings show that even if the researchers agree on what the overall focus in the observations should be, differences can occur in both their focus and analytical level throughout the study.Keywords: field study, observational study, interdisciplinary lenses, interpretation, home care nursing

Aim: To explore long-term care recipients' perceptions of high-quality care and how person-centred approaches are applied in the services., Design: A descriptive explorative qualitative design., Methods: Data were collected through individual interviews with 19 care recipients and 197 h of participant observation at 10 nursing homes and home care units in three Norwegian municipalities. The data were analysed using qualitative content analysis., Results: The analysis revealed a main theme-to be seen and cared for as an individual-describing the core of the recipients' perceptions of high-quality care. This main theme encompassed two sub-themes. The first-individually adapted care-showed that the recipients valued whether their healthcare workers understood them and their individual care needs and preferences. The second theme-interpersonal encounters-captured the recipients' appreciation of their healthcare workers' presence and ability to create moments where they were seen and treated as human beings., Conclusion: From the perspective of care recipients, high-quality care services depend on how they are treated as individuals and how the care they receive is adapted to their individual needs and preferences. These recipients' perceptions of individualised care delivered by healthcare workers are consistent with the goal of person-centred care. These results highlight the value of and need for non-standard approaches to providing high-quality care., Implications for the Profession And/or Patient Care: Despite the long-term care services' extensive caregiving tasks and time pressure, they should enable healthcare workers to be present in the moment with care recipients., Reporting Method: Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) guidelines are used for this study (Tong, Sainsbury, and Craig 2007)., Patient or Public Contribution: Long-term care recipients and the units where they received care contributed to this study. Background: Numerous formal strategies, screening tools, and interventions have been used to prevent malnutrition in long-term care patients. Despite these efforts, the proportion of screened patients is low, and a large proportion are malnourished. Previous research has revealed that healthcare professionals use a broad approach in their nutritional care but has also emphasised the need for further investigation into these approaches., Objective: To explore how healthcare professionals working in long-term care experience and apply nutritional care., Design: A descriptive, exploratory, qualitative design containing 240 h of participant observation, 12 focus groups and 2 individual interviews., Setting(s): Twelve nursing homes and home care units in three Norwegian municipalities., Participants: Participant observation of interactions between healthcare professionals and patients. Forty-three registered nurses participated in focus group or individual interviews., Methods: The data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis., Results: The analysis identified three themes: The first theme, limited significance of nutritional screening, showed that healthcare professionals experienced the limited value of nutritional screening, as it often did not capture patients' nutritional challenges. They also perceived nutritional screening as unsuitable for patients at the end of their lives, those with overweight-related complications, or undergoing rehabilitation. In addition, nutritional screening was perceived as something healthcare professionals did for their managers or administrators, not because it was crucial to providing good nutritional care. The second theme, provision of individualised food, captures the healthcare professionals' efforts in adapting and preparing food according to the patient's preferences. Facilitation to enable patients to make individual food choices and the use of food cards or lists were two approaches to individualising nutrition care. The third theme, making meals more than about food, elucidated how healthcare professionals used meals to help patients cope with their situations and experience social belonging. Conversations about or around meals were used to provide patients with a sense of belonging to their past or present situation. The meals were also used as a diversion strategy for patients with unrest, as arenas for daily activity training, and for meaningful social interactions between patients around the tables., Conclusions: Nutritional screening and prevention of malnutrition are only one part of healthcare professionals' nutritional care. Individualised food and meals that create coping, a sense of belonging, and social experiences are equally important parts of their care. Cancer patients undergo long periods of treatment and follow-up, and it is challenging to keep track of appointments, treatment plans etc. This paper report from a study involving 41 patients and next-of-kin focusing on their strategies for managing the patient journey. Most patients take an active role, employing a variety of tools. The national patient portal is seen as useful for accessing information and keeping an overview but does not alone meet their information needs.

Many see the role of health informatics research as informing the development and implementation of information technology in clinical practice. The aim of this study is to see if this role is realized in the ongoing implementation of a large-scale health information system in central Norway. By doing a document analysis of the planning documents for the implementation, we assess to what extend evidence from the scientific community is explicitly referenced and used in the implementation planning. We found that evidence available is not explicitly used, and that evidence required is not widely available.

Background: Geriatric assessment and management (GAM) improve outcomes in older patients with cancer treated with surgery or chemotherapy. It is unclear whether GAM may provide better function and quality of life (QoL), or be cost-effective, in a radiotherapy (RT) setting., Methods: In this Norwegian cluster-randomised controlled pilot study, we assessed the impact of a GAM intervention involving specialist and primary health services. It was initiated in-hospital at the start of RT by assessing somatic and mental health, function, and social situation, followed by individually adapted management plans and systematic follow-up in the municipalities until 8 weeks after the end of RT, managed by municipal nurses as patients' care coordinators. Thirty-two municipal/city districts were 1:1 randomised to intervention or conventional care. Patients with cancer ≥ 65 years, referred for RT, were enrolled irrespective of cancer type, treatment intent, and frailty status, and followed the allocation of their residential district. The primary outcome was physical function measured by the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-C30 (QLQ-C30). Secondary outcomes were overall quality of life (QoL), physical performance, use and costs of health services. Analyses followed the intention-to-treat principle. Study registration at ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT03881137., Results: We included 178 patients, 89 in each group with comparable age (mean 74.1), sex (female 38.2%), and Edmonton Frail Scale scores (mean 3.4 [scale 0-17], scores 0-3 [fit] in 57%). More intervention patients received curative RT (76.4 vs 61.8%), had higher irradiation doses (mean 54.1 vs 45.5 Gy), and longer lasting RT (mean 4.4 vs 3.6 weeks). The primary outcome was completed by 91% (intervention) vs 88% (control) of patients. No significant differences between groups on predefined outcomes were observed. GAM costs represented 3% of health service costs for the intervention group during the study period., Conclusions: In this heterogeneous cohort of older patients receiving RT, the majority was fit. We found no impact of the intervention on patient-centred outcomes or the cost of health services. Targeting a more homogeneous group of only pre-frail and frail patients is strongly recommended in future studies needed to clarify the role and organisation of GAM in RT settings., (© 2024.
