1. Caustics of $1/r^n$ binary gravitational lenses: from galactic haloes to exotic matter

Abstract

We investigate the caustic topologies for binary gravitational lenses made up of two objects whose gravitational potential declines as $1/r^n$. With $n<1$ this corresponds to power-law dust distributions like the singular isothermal sphere. The $n>1$ regime can be obtained with some violations of the energy conditions, one famous example being the Ellis wormhole. Gravitational lensing provides a natural arena to distinguish and identify such exotic objects in our Universe. We find that there are still three topologies for caustics as in the standard Schwarzschild binary lens, with the main novelty coming from the secondary caustics of the close topology, which become huge at higher $n$. After drawing caustics by numerical methods, we derive a large amount of analytical formulae in all limits that are useful to provide deeper insight in the mathematics of the problem. Abstract

For all exoplanet candidates, the reliability of a claimed detection needs to be assessed through a careful study of systematic errors in the data to minimize the false positives rate. We present a method to investigate such systematics in microlensing datasets using the microlensing event OGLE-2013-BLG-0446 as a case study. The event was observed from multiple sites around the world and its high magnification (A_{max} \sim 3000) allowed us to investigate the effects of terrestrial and annual parallax. Real-time modeling of the event while it was still ongoing suggested the presence of an extremely low-mass companion (\sim 3M_\oplus ) to the lensing star, leading to substantial follow-up coverage of the light curve. We test and compare different models for the light curve and conclude that the data do not favour the planetary interpretation when systematic errors are taken into account., Comment: accepted ApJ 2015

Abstract

The present work was carried out as part of the Norwegian research project GeoExtreme (Geohazards, Climate Change and Extreme Weather Events), that aims at assessing landslide hazard for the next decades in selected regions of Norway based on future climate scenarios and their corresponding socio-economic costs. This contribution focuses on the calibration of physically-based models under the present precipitation conditions in order to develop a tool for soil slip-debris flow hazard assessment with changed climate conditions. The basic idea of the work is to compare results of a coupled hydrologic-slope stability model under different meteorological conditions, in order to assess the effect of climate change on the probability of landslides. Our study area in central south Norway is located at the junction between the N – S trending Gudbrandsdalen valley and the E – W trending Otta tributary valley. Both valleys have been glacially carved out through recurrent glaciations, and present steep valley sides are covered by thick silt to sand till deposits. Exposed schist bedrock is heavily weathered and acts as a source for soil development and rock fall deposits. The area has experienced some shallow landsliding events affecting both the weathered and the glacial material. In order to evaluate the probability of shallow landslides, we coupled the diffusivity hydrological model [1] with the infinite slope-stability analysis to evaluate how the increase of pressure head during precipitation events affects the stability of the slopes. Taking into consideration the uncertainty of the data and the difficulty to calibrate the model with actual events, we have introduced the theory of random sets in the model to handle available data in the form of sets of intervals. The results of the model highlight a non linear increase in the probability of landsliding with an increase in future precipitations as estimated by low resolution climatic models. Those preliminary outcomes confirm the necessity to evaluate the increase in unstable areas as consequences of an increase of extreme events by using the precipitation scenarios coming from high resolution meteorological models as input. Abstract

The search for novel chemotherapeutic agents and approaches to cancer treatment is an active research field stimulated by the discovery of new biological targets and by the possibility of obtaining new drugs without serious and undesirable side effects. Several anticancer agents have been developed so far based on different mechanism of action; despite this, intercalator agents still remain an interesting class of molecules to focus on. In particular, in the literature there are several examples of Naphthalimmide and 1,4,5,8-Naphtalentetracaboxylic diimide derivatives as intercalating and anticancer agents. It is well-known that, at physiological pH, protonated polyamines interact strongly with the phosphate residues of DNA. Therefore, the inclusion of these basic functionalities, on an intercalating moiety, may improve the interaction with DNA structure. Recently, we reported on the design and synthesis of substituted Naphtalen(di)immides as anticancer agents (1). Among the several developed compounds, 1 and 2 were the most interesting derivatives showing the ability to bind DNA, trigger caspase activation, cause accumulation of p53 protein, down-regulate the survival kinase AKT, cause a decrease of ERK1/2 and, inhibit ERK’s phosphorylation. The aim of the present work is to further investigate the promising biological profile of 1 and 2, and the role of the 2-methoxy substituents on the benzyl moieties, For this purpose several analogues, with different substituents on the two aromatic rings, were synthesized evaluated for their antiproliferative activity.
