The development and technological applications of molecular spin systems require versatile experimental techniques to characterize and control their static and dynamic magnetic properties. In the latter case, bulk spectroscopic and magnetometric techniques, such as AC magnetometry and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance, are usually employed, showing high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, and flexibility. They are based on creating a nonequilibrium state either by changing the magnetic field or by applying resonant microwave radiation. Another possible source of perturbation is a laser pulse that rapidly heats the sample. This approach has proven to be one of the most useful techniques for studying the kinetics and mechanism of chemical and biochemical reactions. Inspired by these works, we propose an inductive detection of temperature-induced magnetization dynamics as applied to the study of molecular spin systems and describe the general design and construction of a particular induction probehead, taking into account the constraints imposed by the cryostat and electromagnet. To evaluate the performance, several coordination compounds of VO2+, Co2+, and Dy3+ were investigated using low-energy pulses of a terahertz free electron laser of the Novosibirsk free electron laser facility as a heat source. All measured magnetization dynamics were qualitatively or quantitatively described using a proposed basic theoretical model and compared with the data obtained by alternating current magnetometry. Based on the results of the research, the possible scope of applications of inductive detection and its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with standard methods are discussed. The application of terahertz (THz) science in industrial technology and scientific research requires efficient THz detectors. Such detectors should be able to operate under various external conditions and conform to existing geometric constraints in the required application. Pyroelectric THz detectors are among the best candidates. This is due to their versatility, outstanding performance, ease of fabrication, and robustness. In this paper, we propose a compact pyroelectric detector based on a bioriented poled polyvinylidene difluoride film coated with sputtered metal electrodes for in situ absorption measurement at cryogenic temperature. The detector design was optimized for the registration system of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) endstation of the Novosibirsk Free Electron Laser facility. Measurements of the detector response to pulsed THz radiation at different temperatures and electrode materials showed that the response varies with both the temperature and the type of electrode material used. The maximum signal level corresponds to the temperature range of 10–40 K, in which the pyroelectric coefficient of the PVDF film also has a maximum value. Among the three coatings studied, namely indium tin oxide (ITO), Au, and Cu/Ni, the latter has the highest increase in sensitivity at low temperature. The possibility of using the detectors for in situ absorption measurement was exemplified using two typical molecular spin systems, which exhibited a transparency of 20–30% at 76.9 cm−1 and 5 K. Such measurements, carried out directly in the cryostat with the main recording system and sample fully configured, allow precise control of the THz radiation parameters at the EPR endstation. The kinetics of spin-selective reactions involving triplet molecules, such as triplet–triplet annihilation or electron transfer to dioxygen molecules in the ground triplet spin state, are strongly dependent on the dipole–dipole interaction (DDI) of electron spins in spin-1 particles. The effect of this interaction on the intersystem crossing in the reaction encounter complex of the paramagnetic particles was previously considered for some particular cases using oversimplified approaches. In this study, we consider a rigorous kinetic model of the irreversible reaction between the spin-1/2 and spin-1 particles in an encounter complex with the reactive doublet state. This model explicitly includes both isotropic exchange coupling of the reactants and spin dependence of the reaction rate in the form of the Haberkorn reaction term. For the time-independent DDI, an analytical expression for the reaction kinetics was derived. The effect of DDI fluctuations was analyzed using numerical simulations. It was found that increasing both the exchange coupling and the reaction rate constants can significantly slow down the quartet–doublet spin transitions and, as a consequence, the observed spin-selective reaction rate. Additionally, the presence of the irreversible reaction in the doublet states affects a coherent evolution in the non-reactive quartet subsystem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nature of the photoprocess for a Ni(Se2P(C6H5)2)2 = Ni(dsepi)2 complex in CCl4 and CH3CN has been determined by the EPR, steady-state and time-resolved optical spectroscopy methods. In both cases, the ultrafast relaxation of the excited state of Ni(dsepi)2 molecules are observed; however, the occurrence of a photochemical reaction, in addition to the above process, has been detected in CCl4 solutions. The photolysis mechanism of Ni(dsepi)2 includes the ClNi(dsepi)(•dsepi) species formation stage initiated by electron transfer from the photoexcited complex to the halocarbon and subsequent fast reactions involving these intermediates. Exciplex generation under optical and X-ray excitation in identical conditions is experimentally compared using a specially chosen model donor-acceptor system, anthracene (electron acceptor) and N,N-dimethylaniline (electron donor) in non-polar solution, and the results are analyzed and interpreted based on analytically calculated luminescence quantum yields. Calculations are performed on the basis of kinetic equations for multistage schemes of bulk exciplex production reaction under optical excitation and combination of bulk and geminate reactions of radical ion pairs under X-ray excitation. These results explain the earlier experimentally found difference in the ratio of the quantum yields of exciplexes and excited electron acceptors (exciplex generation efficiency) and the corresponding change in the exciplex generation efficiency under X-irradiation as compared to the reaction under optical excitation. We suggest a convenient probe exciplex system for studies in radiation spin chemistry based on a novel acceptor-substituted diphenylacetylene, 1-(phenylethynyl)-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzene that has a very short fluorescence lifetime (<200 ps) and low quantum yield (0.01) of intrinsic emission, provides efficient electron capture in alkanes and efficient exciplex formation upon recombination in pair with DMA radical cation, while exhibiting a shifted to red exciplex emission band as compared to the parent system DMA - diphenylacetylene. After chemical, luminescent, radiation and spin-chemical characterization of the new system we used the magnitude of magnetic field effect in its exciplex emission band for experimental estimation of the fraction of spin-correlated radical ion pairs under X-irradiation with upper energy cutoff 40 keV in a set of 11 alkanes. For linear and branched alkanes magnetic field effects and the corresponding fractions are approximately 19-20% and 0.28, while for cyclic alkanes they are lower at 16-17% and 0.22, respectively.
