The solution of anagrams is probably the single most intensively studied of human problem solving tasks. Recent research has been focused primarily on the verbal properties of the anagram and the solution word, which affect speed, and probability of solution. By and large, the data are compatible with the position that solving anagrams entails a sequential, nonrandom, process of covert trial and error in which familiarity with the language guides the successive attempts to rearrange the letters of the anagram into a meaningful word. It is clear from the introspective reports of subjects, however, that factors other than the verbal properties of the anagram and the solution word are also significant in the formation and testing of possible solutions. Particularly when an anagram is solved very rapidly, subjects frequently report that they simply saw the solution. Whatever else the anagram may be, it is also a patterned visual stimulus, which, if sufficiently distinctive, may elicit the correct solution response with little or no mediational activity.

The incidence of metastases to the breast from nonbreast carcinoma is less than 1% of all breast cancers; of these, adenocarcinoma of the lung to breast is a small proportion (<0.1% of breast carcinomas). The imaging findings of a case of metastatic lung adenocarcinoma to the breast are presented with a review of the literature. Imaging findings including elastography suggesting the breast mass is not a primary breast cancer are highlighted. The importance of notifying the pathologist that nonbreast metastatic disease is in the differential is discussed. The use of appropriate tumor markers is needed; otherwise, the lesion may be interpreted as a triple negative breast cancer.

Neurocysticercosis is a significant public health issue within the United States. Although cysticercosis was once thought to have been eradicated in the United States, the number of documented cases is rising and immigrants from endemic areas are at the highest risk for acquiring and developing this disease. The clinical presentation of neurocysticercosis is variable and vague neurologic symptoms or sudden unexplained death in individuals with risk factors may be the only available information warranting a consideration of neurocysticercosis. Radiologic and laboratory findings can help guide medical and surgical interventions, while histologic confirmation establishes a more definitive diagnosis. Encysted larvae can be found throughout the central nervous system and undergo progressive stages of decay. Degenerating vesicles elicit an inflammatory response, involving surrounding structures, and cause the major clinical symptomatology.

Background: In patients with endometrial carcinoma, the use of hysteroscopy may result in malignant peritoneal cytology. The significance of these mechanically disseminated malignant cells is uncertain., Case: Disseminated endometrial carcinoma occurred in a 39-year-old patient with endometrial carcinoma which had been hysteroscopically resected and treated conservatively. Hysteroscopic dissemination was strongly suggested based on the limited extent of carcinoma in the uterus, the exophytic nature of the pelvic tumor implant, and the lack of associated endometriosis., Conclusion: Hysteroscopy should be reserved for patients in whom prior endometrial sampling fails to demonstrate malignancy., (Copyright 1998 Academic Press.)

This research examined several factors hypothesized to influence the actor-observer effect (AOE). Participants engaged in 3 successive dyadic interactions: after each interaction, they rated the importance of 4 causal factors in influencing their behavior and that of their partner. The AOE held for 1 external factor, interaction partner, and 1 internal factor, personality, but not for situation or mood. Actor and observer attributions changed in predicted ways across the 3 interactions: Actors increasingly emphasized the importance of their partner, whereas observers increasingly emphasized personality: both actors and observers substantially lowered their attributions to the situation. We found consistent individual differences in attributional tendencies that allowed us to predict who showed the AOE. Together, the findings demonstrate that A-O differences depend on: (a) the specific causal factor invoked, (b) the individual's history in the situation, and (c) individual differences among attributors. Discussion focuses on the limited generality of the AOE and the need for a more complex formulation of A-O differences in attribution.

Parkinson's disease patients (N = 41, mean age = 65 years) were described by themselves and their spouses as they were presently and before their illness using the Adjective Check List. Equivalent self- and spouse descriptions were obtained from the members of a matched community sample (N = 96). Descriptions of patients and their spouses converged, both reporting sharp, pervasive (e.g., on all of the Big Five dimensions), and uniformly negative change in personality. Similar, but much less marked change was found in the community sample. The data as a set suggest that the reported changes in the patients were veridical and that their magnitude was primarily the result of the disease rather than aging. Evidence of continuities in personality (for example, differential stability) was also noted. We argued that the illness accelerated and intensified changes normally expected in later life.
