Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative case. As the disease progresses, the response time to doses of levodopa (L-Dopa) becomes shorter and the effects of the drug are severely limited by some undesirable side effects such as the ‘on–off’ phenomenon. In several diseases, including Parkinson’s, nanoparticles can deliver antioxidant compounds that reduce oxidative stress. This study evaluates and compares the neuroprotective effects of L-Dopa-modified zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) in the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PD rat model. For this purpose, the synthesis of NPs was carried out. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer were used for characterization. The rats were randomized into 9 experimental groups: control, lesion group (6-OHDA), 6-OHDA + 5 mg/kg L-Dopa, 6-OHDA + 10 mg/kg L-Dopa, 6-OHDA + 20 mg/kg L-Dopa, 6-OHDA + 20 mg/kg ZnNPs, 6-OHDA + 40 mg/kg ZnNPs, 6-OHDA + 30 mg/kg ZnNPs + L-Dopa, and 6-OHDA + 60 mg/kg ZnNPs + L-Dopa. Behavioral tests were performed on all groups 14 days after treatment. Phosphatase and tensin homolog, Excitatory amino acid transporter 1/2, and Glutamine synthetase gene analyses were performed on brain samples taken immediately after the tests. In addition, histological and immunohistochemical methods were used to determine the general structure and properties of the tissues. We obtained important findings that L-Dopa-modified ZnNPs increased the activity of glutamate transporters. Our experiment showed that glutamate increases neuronal cell vitality and improves behavioral performance. Therefore, L-Dopa-modified ZnNPs can be used to prevent neurotoxicity. According to what we found, results show that L-Dopa-modified ZnNPs will lend to the effective avoidance and therapy of PD.

Upgrading heavy oil is a subject of high importance for fossil fuel industry due to the rapid depletion of light oil reservoirs and the consequent increased demand for upgrading heavy oil. In this review, the advancement made in heavy oil upgrading and the proposed sustainable emerging technologies dedicated to heavy oil processing have been discussed in a comprehensive and informative manner with consideration to the encountered associated with properties of heavy oil including its significant content of undesirable large molecular weight hydrocarbons, its high viscosity, and its elevated impurity level. The shortcomings of conventional crude oil upgrading technologies are outlined, in relation to the upgrading of heavy oil. The various technologies used for the extraction of heavy oil from reservoirs, as well as refinery technologies for improving the quality and marketability of heavy oil products are summarized encompassing modified conventional methods and emerging technologies. Thermal and catalytic processes were compared and evaluated based on the literature for heavy oil processing. Furthermore, emerging technologies for heavy oil processing were listed and discussed comprehensively. The proper selection of the refining technology for heavy oil processing is crucial for the quality of the final products and it is evident from the literature that the selection criteria vary from one heavy oil reservoir to the other depending on the properties of the crude oil.

Aim We demonstrate the effect of PDE5 inhibitors in cases of acute lung injury via the relationship between cGMP/NO and the TLR4-NF-[kappa]B-NLRP3 pathway. Materials and Methods This study was performed with 30 male Wistar albino rats. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was administered intratracheally to the rats and acute lung injury (ALI) was induced. Twelve hours after LPS administration, avanafil, prepared at suitable doses according to the body weights of the animals, was administered by oral gavage. Lung tissue samples of all groups were examined histopathologically and by immunochemical staining (IL-1[beta], iNOS, TLR4, and NF-[kappa]B). The iNOS, NLRP3, and IL-1B mRNA expression levels in the lung tissues were measured by RT-PCR. The left upper lobes of the rat lungs were dried at 70 °C for 48 h and lung water content was calculated. Result Statistically significant increases in iNOS, NLRP3, and IL-1[beta] mRNA expressions were observed in the rats with ALI compared to the healthy controls (p < 0.0001). Those increased expressions were reduced at both doses of avanafil (p < 0.0001). This reduction was found to be greater at 20 mg/kg (p < 0.0001). IL-1[beta], iNOS, TLR4, and NF-[kappa]B immunopositivity was moderate/severe in the ALI group and mild in the group with ALI + avanafil at 20 mg/kg (p < 0.05). When the wet/dry lung ratios were calculated, a statistically significant increase was seen in the ALI group compared to the healthy rats (p < 0.05). That increase was decreased with both avanafil doses (p < 0.05). Conclusion We suggest that avanafil may prevent the progression of ALI and be effective in its treatment.
