In the context of increasing demands for long-term multi-energy load forecasting in real-world applications, this paper introduces Patchformer, a novel model that integrates patch embedding with encoder-decoder Transformer-based architectures. To address the limitation in existing Transformer-based models, which struggle with intricate temporal patterns in long-term forecasting, Patchformer employs patch embedding, which predicts multivariate time-series data by separating it into multiple univariate data and segmenting each of them into multiple patches. This method effectively enhances the model's ability to capture local and global semantic dependencies. The numerical analysis shows that the Patchformer obtains overall better prediction accuracy in both multivariate and univariate long-term forecasting on the novel Multi-Energy dataset and other benchmark datasets. In addition, the positive effect of the interdependence among energy-related products on the performance of long-term time-series forecasting across Patchformer and other compared models is discovered, and the superiority of the Patchformer against other models is also demonstrated, which presents a significant advancement in handling the interdependence and complexities of long-term multi-energy forecasting. Lastly, Patchformer is illustrated as the only model that follows the positive correlation between model performance and the length of the past sequence, which states its ability to capture long-range past local semantic information.

In recent years, low-carbon transportation has become an indispensable part as sustainable development strategies of various countries, and plays a very important responsibility in promoting low-carbon cities. However, the security of low-carbon transportation has been threatened from various ways. For example, denial of service attacks pose a great threat to the electric vehicles and vehicle-to-grid networks. To minimize these threats, several methods have been proposed to defense against them. Yet, these methods are only for certain types of scenarios or attacks. Therefore, this review addresses security aspect from holistic view, provides the overview, challenges and future directions of cyber security technologies in low-carbon transportation. Firstly, based on the concept and importance of low-carbon transportation, this review positions the low-carbon transportation services. Then, with the perspective of network architecture and communication mode, this review classifies its typical attack risks. The corresponding defense technologies and relevant security suggestions are further reviewed from perspective of data security, network management security and network application security. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), which usually utilizes machine learning methods and is effective in disaggregating smart meter readings from the household-level into appliance-level consumption, can help analyze electricity consumption behaviours of users and enable practical smart energy and smart grid applications. Recent studies have proposed many novel NILM frameworks based on federated deep learning (FL). However, there lacks comprehensive research exploring the utility optimization schemes and the privacy-preserving schemes in different FL-based NILM application scenarios. In this paper, we make the first attempt to conduct FL-based NILM focusing on both the utility optimization and the privacy-preserving by developing a distributed and privacy-preserving NILM (DP2-NILM) framework and carrying out comparative experiments on practical NILM scenarios based on real-world smart meter datasets. Specifically, two alternative federated learning strategies are examined in the utility optimization schemes, i.e., the FedAvg and the FedProx. Moreover, different levels of privacy guarantees, i.e., the local differential privacy federated learning and the global differential privacy federated learning are provided in the DP2-NILM. Extensive comparison experiments are conducted on three real-world datasets to evaluate the proposed framework.

Upgrading effluent standards of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and repairing sewerage systems leads to contradictions and synergies between water pollution control and climate change mitigation. This affects historical trajectories and characteristics of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from China's WWTPs, which stay inadequately studied. Here we establish emissions inventories of China's WWTPs using plant-level WWTP operational data. We find that removed amount of chemical oxygen demand and ammonia nitrogen increased 0.8 and 1.3 times during 2009-2019, while WWTP GHG emissions increased 1.8 times, being 6 times national GHG emissions growth rate. Increasing sludge yield and electricity intensity became primary driving factors in 2015 because of stricter effluent standards and lower influent contaminant concentration. We defined Functional Unit-Gini coefficient to quantify divergence of WWTP GHG emissions, which grew from 0.20 in 2009 to 0.29 in 2019. Online federated learning (OFL) and online transfer learning (OTL) are two collaborative paradigms for overcoming modern machine learning challenges such as data silos, streaming data, and data security. This survey explored OFL and OTL throughout their major evolutionary routes to enhance understanding of online federated and transfer learning. Besides, practical aspects of popular datasets and cutting-edge applications for online federated and transfer learning are highlighted in this work. Furthermore, this survey provides insight into potential future research areas and aims to serve as a resource for professionals developing online federated and transfer learning frameworks.

Domain adaptation solves image classification problems in the target domain by taking advantage of the labelled source data and unlabelled target data. Usually, the source and target domains share the same set of classes. As a special case, Open-Set Domain Adaptation (OSDA) assumes there exist additional classes in the target domain but not present in the source domain. To solve such a domain adaptation problem, our proposed method learns discriminative common subspaces for the source and target domains using a novel Open-Set Locality Preserving Projection (OSLPP) algorithm. The source and target domain data are aligned in the learned common spaces class-wisely. To handle the open-set classification problem, our method progressively selects target samples to be pseudo-labelled as known classes and rejects the outliers if they are detected as from unknown classes. The common subspace learning algorithm OSLPP simultaneously aligns the labelled source data and pseudo-labelled target data from known classes and pushes the rejected target data away from the known classes. The common subspace learning and the pseudo-labelled sample selection/rejection facilitate each other in an iterative learning framework and achieves state-of-the-art performance on benchmark datasets Office-31 and Office-Home with the average HOS of 87.4% and 67.0% respectively., Comment: 8 pages

However, smart meters are privately owned and distributed, which make real-world applications of NILM challenging. To this end, this paper develops a distributed and privacy-preserving federated deep learning framework for NILM (FederatedNILM), which combines federated learning with a state-of-the-art deep learning architecture to conduct NILM for the classification of typical states of household appliances. Through extensive comparative experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed FederatedNILM framework is demonstrated.

The power system is undergoing rapid evolution with the roll-out of advanced metering infrastructure and local energy applications (e.g. electric vehicles) as well as the increasing penetration of intermittent renewable energy at both transmission and distribution level, which characterizes the peak load demand with stronger randomness and less predictability and therefore poses a threat to the power grid security. Since storing large quantities of electricity to satisfy load demand is neither economically nor environmentally friendly, effective peak demand management strategies and reliable peak load forecast methods become essential for optimizing the power system operations. To this end, this paper provides a timely and comprehensive overview of peak load demand forecast methods in the literature. To our best knowledge, this is the first comprehensive review on such topic. In this paper we first give a precise and unified problem definition of peak load demand forecast. Second, 139 papers on peak load forecast methods were systematically reviewed where methods were classified into different stages based on the timeline. Thirdly, a comparative analysis of peak load forecast methods are summarized and different optimizing methods to improve the forecast performance are discussed. The paper ends with a comprehensive summary of the reviewed papers and a discussion of potential future research directions.

In this paper, we propose a realistic multiple dynamic pricing approach to demand response in the retail market. First, an adaptive clustering-based customer segmentation framework is proposed to categorize customers into different groups to enable the effective identification of usage patterns. Second, customized demand models with important market constraints which capture the price-demand relationship explicitly, are developed for each group of customers to improve the model accuracy and enable meaningful pricing. Third, the multiple pricing based demand response is formulated as a profit maximization problem subject to realistic market constraints. The overall aim of the proposed scalable and practical method aims to achieve 'right' prices for 'right' customers so as to benefit various stakeholders in the system such as grid operators, customers and retailers. The proposed multiple pricing framework is evaluated via simulations based on real-world datasets.

We address the Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) problem in image classification from a new perspective. In contrast to most existing works which either align the data distributions or learn domain-invariant features, we directly learn a unified classifier for both domains within a high-dimensional homogeneous feature space without explicit domain adaptation. To this end, we employ the effective Selective Pseudo-Labelling (SPL) techniques to take advantage of the unlabelled samples in the target domain. Surprisingly, data distribution discrepancy across the source and target domains can be well handled by a computationally simple classifier (e.g., a shallow Multi-Layer Perceptron) trained in the original feature space. Besides, we propose a novel generative model norm-VAE to generate synthetic features for the target domain as a data augmentation strategy to enhance classifier training. Experimental results on several benchmark datasets demonstrate the pseudo-labelling strategy itself can lead to comparable performance to many state-of-the-art methods whilst the use of norm-VAE for feature augmentation can further improve the performance in most cases. As a result, our proposed methods (i.e. naive-SPL and norm-VAE-SPL) can achieve new state-of-the-art performance with the average accuracy of 93.4% and 90.4% on Office-Caltech and ImageCLEF-DA datasets, and comparable performance on Digits, Office31 and Office-Home datasets with the average accuracy of 97.2%, 87.6% and 67.9% respectively., Comment: 12 pages

Water distribution networks are hydraulic infrastructures that aim to meet water demands at their various nodes. Water flows through pipes in the network create nonlinear dynamics on networks. A desirable feature of water distribution networks is high resistance to failures and other shocks given to the system. Such threats would at least transiently change the flow rate in various pipes, potentially undermining the functionality of the whole water distribution system. Here we carry out a linear stability analysis for a nonlinear dynamical system representing the flow rate through pipes that are interconnected through an arbitrary pipe network with reservoirs and consumer nodes. We show that the steady state is always locally stable and develop a method to calculate the eigenvalue that corresponds to the mode that decays the most slowly towards the equilibrium, which we use as an index for resilience of the system. We show that the proposed index is positively correlated with the recovery rate of the pipe network, which was derived from a realistic and industrially popular simulator. The present analytical framework is expected to be useful for deploying tools from nonlinear dynamics and network analysis to designing, resilience managements and scenario testings of water distribution networks., Comment: 1 figure

Water distribution networks (WDNs) are one of the most important man-made infrastructures. Resilience, the ability to respond to disturbances and recover to a desirable state, is of vital importance to our society. There is increasing evidence that the resilience of networked infrastructures with dynamic signals depends on their network topological properties. Whilst existing literature has examined a variety of complex network centrality and spectral properties, very little attention has been given to understand multi-scale flow-based feedback loops and its impact on overall stability. Here, resilience arising from multi-scale feedback loops is inferred using a proxy measure called trophic coherence. This is hypothesised to have a strong impact on both the pressure deficit and the water age. Our results show that trophic coherence is positively correlated with the time to recovery (0.62 to 0.52), while it is negatively correlated with the diffusion of a disruption (-0.66 to -0.52). Finally, we apply random forest analysis to combine resilience measures, showing that the new resilience ensemble provides a more accurate measure for networked resilience.

In this paper, we consider a realistic and meaningful scenario in the context of smart grids where an electricity retailer serves three different types of customers, i.e., customers with an optimal home energy management system embedded in their smart meters (C-HEMS), customers with only smart meters (C-SM), and customers without smart meters (C-NONE). The main objective of this paper is to support the retailer to make optimal day-ahead dynamic pricing decisions in such a mixed customer pool. To this end, we propose a two-level decision-making framework where the retailer acting as upper-level agent firstly announces its electricity prices of next 24 hours and customers acting as lower-level agents subsequently schedule their energy usages accordingly. For the lower level problem, we model the price responsiveness of different customers according to their unique characteristics. For the upper level problem, we optimize the dynamic prices for the retailer to maximize its profit subject to realistic market constraints.
