4. Effect and mechanism of chlortetracycline on phosphorus removal performance in EBPR system

Abstract

A sequencing batch reactor(SBR) was used with casein hydrolysate as the sole carbon source to investigate the impact of chlortetracycline(CTC) on the enhanced biological phosphorus removal(EBPR) system. The results indicated that the removal rates of PO₄³⁻ and COD were comparable to those of the control group when the CTC concentration was 0.1 mg/L. However, the removal rate of PO₄³⁻ decreased from 90.0% to 75.0%, and the removal rate of COD decreased from 95.3% to 90.4% when the CTC concentration was increased to 1.0 mg/L. Further, at CTC concentration of 5.0 mg/L, the removal rate of PO₄³⁻ was only 40.0%, indicating significant inhibition, while the removal rate of COD still reached 85.1%. The inhibitory effect of chlortetracycline on the biological phosphorus removal system was intensified with the increase of chlortetracycline dosage. Analysis of matrix metabolism in typical cycles revealed that chlortetracycline had a more pronounced effect on aerobic phosphorus uptake in biological phosphorus removal, which would reduce glycogen and polyphosphate synthesis. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated that the presence of chlortetracycline could inhibit the metabolic pathways associated with phosphorus removal and the synthesis of key enzymes in poly-β-hydroxybutyrate(PHB) synthesis. This inhibition ultimately resulted in the deterioration of the phosphorus removal performance of the system.

Abstract

The combined effect of ultrasonic vibration (UT) and applied pressure (P) on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-5.0Cu-0.6Mn-0.6Fe alloy were investigated. The best tensile properties produced by P+UT processing are UTS: 268MPa, YS: 192MPa, E.L.: 17.1%, respectively, which increasing by 64%, 59% and 307%, respectively, compare to the Non-treated alloy.

Abstract

Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process is regarded as an efficient and cost-effective technology for nitrogen removal. Anammox bacteria typically coexist with other microorganisms, which highlights the necessity to optimize the system, improve the pollutant removal efficiency and maintain the system stability. This review mainly focused on the interaction effects of anammox bacteria with other functional bacteria, such as aerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, sulphur-oxidizing bacteria, sulphate-reducing ammonia oxidation bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation microorganisms, denitrifying phosphate-accumulating organisms. This review provided support for the emerging insights that the synergistic effects of various functional bacteria related to nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, and carbon within the anammox system could be a promising direction for the development of wastewater treatment technologies. By considering the interplay and cooperation of these microorganisms, wastewater treatment systems could potentially achieve more comprehensive and efficient removal of multiple pollutants. Continued in-depth research and understanding of these interactions would be instrumental in exploring innovative and integrated solutions, ultimately aiming for a more effective and holistic approach to wastewater treatment. Abstract

Water quality is crucial for the ecological health of rivers. However, assessing environmental stressors in large river basins has been challenging due to limited biodiversity monitoring tools. Combining environmental DNA and water quality monitoring presents new possibilities for evaluating the impact of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on fish diversity. Case studies from the Jinshui River, Futou Lake, and Gan River in the Jinshui River Basin demonstrated that eDNA biomonitoring reached 84.62% OTU asymptote (176 OTUs) and 91.06% species asymptote (49 species). The Gan River had 1.21 and 1.26 times more fish OTUs than Futou Lake and the Jinshui River, with 20 overlapping species among the areas. We identified typical excitation-emission matrix (EEM) components of DOM and three PARAFAC fluorescent components: C1 (microbial humic-like), C2 (terrestrial humic-like), and C3 (tryptophan-like). Sequence diversity was positively correlated with EC, TDS, pH, NH3-N, DO, CODMn, biological index (BIX), and freshness index (β/α). Taxonomic diversity positively correlated with spectral slope ratio (SR) and C3. Functional diversity positively correlated with SR but negatively correlated with humification index (HIX). 41. High Power Multi-Junction 808 nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers With High Efficiency

Abstract

High-performance 808-nm five-junction vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) are designed and fabricated. The light-current-voltage characteristics of the 808-nm five-junction and single-junction VCSELs are compared. The 808-nm five-junction VCSELs with a high slope efficiency of 5.92 W/A at $5~^{\circ }$ C and 5.10 W/A at $25~^{\circ }$ C are achieved. The maximum power conversion efficiency is 55.04% for the 808-nm five-junction individual VCSEL. Under short pulse conditions (400 Hz, 60 ns pulse width), the peak output power of the five-junction VCSELs array is 1.013 kW at 224 A. Such multi-junction 808 nm VCSELs with a high power density have important applications in Q-tuned solid-state lasers.
