The American Dream is thoroughly woven into the American life and has broad individual and cultural implications. At its heart, the American Dream represents opportunity and prosperity but has recently developed into a hyper-consumption ideology. Because of the current state of economic and environmental conditions, new ideas of what the American Dream should be are emerging. The current study investigates how the American Dream is perceived among college students and whether the traditional values of the Dream are still relevant among this generation. Results showed that, overall, college students are split as to whether the American Dream is outdated (47% vs. 47%). The results also suggest differing levels of buy-in to the American Dream among college students. Specifically, there are three different groups which vary in their amount of buy-in to the Dream: Disillusioned who make up 47% of the total respondents, Reformers who are 16% of the total respondents, and Status Quo who make up 31% of the total respondents. Those who are Disillusioned believe the traditional Dream is outdated and new values need to be added. In direct comparison, those who advocate a Status Quo American Dream, support the traditional Dream and do not think new values need to be added. In the middle, are Reformers, who advocate new values be added to the American Dream but do not think that the traditional Dream is outdated. These different clusters vary on the factors used in life decisions, their individual values, environmental concern, and frugality. The American Dream will probably continue to evolve as new generations change their beliefs as to what constitutes important life goals. If it remains a flexible construct, the American Dream may never be outdated but may need continual updates as to what exactly the American Dream represents.

Objective: Factors contributing to the obesity epidemic have powerful effects on people who are frequently exposed to the extensive advertisement of unhealthy foods. This study aimed to examine how consumers' attitudes towards health and nutrition-related (HNR) claims in food advertisements affected their healthy food choice (HFC) and how online searching for nutrition information (OSNI) about food products mediated the impact of obesity knowledge on HFC. Method: An online survey was conducted using Amazon Mechanical Turk. A total of 897 participants were recruited, with 484 women and 380 men. A moderated mediation analysis using PROCESS was conducted. Results: OSNI was found to mediate the impact of obesity knowledge on HFC. The extent to which consumers' obesity knowledge influenced their HFC depended on consumers' attitudes towards HNR claims in food advertisements. The direct effect of consumers' obesity knowledge on their HFC was moderated by their attitudes towards HNR claims in food advertisements. Conclusion: Both theoretical and practical insights into the dynamic effects on HFC were identified in response to the use of HNR claims in food advertisements as a persuasive strategy for promoting healthy eating. Healthcare professionals and health educators working to address obesity issues should craft more useful online health and nutrition information for consumers who are considering eating healthier foods. In addition, more helpful HNR claims in food advertisements should be developed so as to promote healthy food products, especially for consumers with limited obesity knowledge.

A novel polysaccharide (WAMPa) was purified from Atractylodis macrocephala Koidz. WAMPa was characterized with molecular weight (MW) distribution, infrared spectrum, monosaccharide composition, methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The backbone of WAMPa was → 2)-β-D-Glcp-(1 → interspersed with a small amount of → 5)-α-D-Araf-(1→, and the branches were the terminal α-D-Glcp-(1 → and β-D-Glcp-(1→. The immunomodulatory activities of WAMPa were investigated on two levels experiments including in vitro RAW264.7 cells and in vivo zebrafish. Meanwhile, the immune-mediated antitumor activity was evaluated by the inhibitory effect of the culture medium from WAMPa-treated RAW264.7 cells on human breast cancer cell line MCF-7. Bioactivity assays showed that WAMPa increased mRNA expression levels of TNF-α, IL-6 and iNOS, enhanced the levels of NO, and promoted the phosphorylation of ERK, p38 and JNK. Taken together, these findings revealed that WAMPa exhibited immunomodulatory effects by regulating MAPK signaling pathway. The antitumor experiments showed that WAMPa did not show a significant growth inhibition ratio on MCF-7 cells, but WAMPa-treated RAW264.7 macrophages could significantly inhibit the growth of MCF-7 cells. Thus, the antitumor activity of WAMPa was mediated mainly through the activation of macrophages. These results suggested that WAMPa could be considered as potential immunomodulatory and antitumor supplements.

An inorganic–organic hybrid Eu–W-implanted tartrate-connected selenotungstate tetramer {[Eu4(H2O)12W6O12(tar)2][B-α-SeW9O33]4}16− (1a, H4tar = tartaric acid) was successfully obtained by introducing the flexible multidentate tartrate ligand into the Se-templated lacunary polyoxometalate (POM) and lanthanide (Ln) system. Within 1a, two identical penta-nuclear Eu2W3-cluster-encapsulated dimeric units {[Eu2(H2O)6W3O6][B-α-SeW9O33]2}4− are arranged in an ''open C-shaped'' configuration, interconnected by double tetra-dentate tar4− linkers. Moreover, 1a demonstrates notable stability and intense photoluminescence (PL) emission in an aqueous environment. This emission proves effective in discriminating the toxic chemical pollutant o-nitrophenol (o-NP) from its isomers m-nitrophenol (m-NP) and p-nitrophenol (p-NP), achieving highly selective and sensitive discrimination of o-NP with a low detection limit of 0.73 μM. The practical applicability of probe 1a was demonstrated in lake water, exhibiting suitable recoveries. The PL sensing mechanism involving static quenching and competitive absorption was elucidated finally. This accomplishment sets the groundwork for the deliberate synthesis of novel organic ligands and Ln-functionalized POM hybrids. Furthermore, it propels the exploration of POM materials for the recognition of environmental pollutants.

ABSTRACTLong non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been shown to be involved in the regulation of skeletal muscle development through multiple mechanisms. The present study revealed that the lncRNA SOX6 AU (SRY-box transcription factor 6 antisense upstream) is reverse transcribed from upstream of the bovine sex-determining region Y (SRY)-related high-mobility-group box 6 (SOX6) gene. SOX6 AU was significantly differentially expressed in muscle tissue among different developmental stages in Xianan cattle. Subsequently, knockdown and overexpression experiments discovered that SOX6 AU promoted primary skeletal muscle cells proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation in bovine. The overexpression of SOX6 AU in bovine primary skeletal muscle cells resulted in 483 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 224 upregulated DEGs and 259 downregulated DEGs. GO functional annotation analysis showed that muscle development-related biological processes such as muscle structure development and muscle cell proliferation were significantly enriched. KEGG pathway analysis revealed that the PI3K/AKT and MAPK signaling pathways were important pathways for DEG enrichment. Notably, we found that SOX6 AU inhibited the mRNA and protein expression levels of the SOX6 gene. Moreover, knockdown of the SOX6 gene promoted the proliferation and apoptosis of bovine primary skeletal muscle cells. Finally, we showed that SOX6 AU promoted the proliferation and apoptosis of bovine primary skeletal muscle cells by cis-modulation of SOX6 in cattle. This work illustrates our discovery of the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of SOX6 AU in the development of beef.

Abstract This study aimed to explore and impart understanding of bone remodelling in children with intracapsular fractures treated conservatively. Records of children (less than 12 years), who sustained intracapsular fractures and treated conservatively, were retrieved consecutively for the period of March 2011 to February 2016. Data about age, gender, date of injury, dates of admission and discharge, mechanism of trauma, location and pattern of fracture, other mandibular fractures, treatment methods and time of review were recorded and analysed. Image dates of pre- and post-treatments, including date of review, were also recorded. A total of 22 patients complete their follow-up and show bone remodelling process. During their follow-up, all the displaced condylar fragments fused with the ramus stump at the displaced position. Regardless of the type of conservative procedure, both treatments cannot promote the spontaneous fracture reduction in patients with intracapsular condylar fractures. During follow-up, the absorption of the lateral process of the condyle after the closed treatment becomes close to the ‘horizontal absorption’, until the height (or articular surface) of the lateral condylar process dropped and aligned to the articular surface of the medial process. In children with intracapsular condylar fractures, the fracture fragment of the condyle determines the ramus height of the mandible. Closed treatment cannot restore the fracture fragment. If the height of the fracture fragments dropped remarkably, then open reduction and rigid internal fixation become more suitable.
