Abstract

The present work employs a three-dimensional ocean model (MITgcm) driven by tidal and climatological forcings to assess the range of impacts of thermal wastewater discharge from the Third Nuclear Power Plant (NP_No.3) in Nan Wan Bay on the local ecosystem. Tides and daily wind forcings are incorporated into the MITgcm to examine their effects on thermal plume dispersion and water circulation in Nan Wan Bay. The model results reveal that the thermal plume is most likely to disperse to the southwest in the summer; it is unlikely to drift to the southeast or northeast because of the presence of the gentle southwesterly monsoon. In the winter, the thermal plume is most likely to be directed to the southwest and is unlikely to be directed to the northeast or southeast because of the prevailing northeasterly monsoon. Additionally, it is worth emphasizing that strong tidal currents generate a pair of counter-rotating eddies that significantly influence the dispersion of the thermal plume. 22. Comparison of Abundance and Structure of Larval Fish Assemblages between Autumn and Spring in the Waters Surrounding Taiwan Bank, Western North Pacific.

Abstract

The fluctuations in both time and space of larval fish assemblages in relation to hydrographic characteristics in the waters surrounding Taiwan Bank were studied in October 2021 (autumn) and March 2022 (spring). Throughout the study period, we identified a total of 149 taxa of fish larvae, encompassing 96 genera and 71 families. Engraulis japonicus, Diaphus slender type, unidentified Gobiidae, Apogon sp., unidentified Clupeidae, and Benthosema pterotum were the six dominant taxa and together constituted 47.39% of the total catch. There were no notable temporal variations observed in the abundance of fish larvae, but the species number of fish larvae was greater in spring than in autumn. Significant variations in species composition were observed between the different cruises, and the cluster analysis unveiled a distinct temporal structure of the assemblages of fish larvae. The dynamics of the prevailing currents induced by seasonal monsoons contribute significantly to the transportation of fish larvae. The distribution of fish larvae showed a good association with hydrographic characteristics, where seawater temperature and salinity emerged as the primary explanatory factors influencing the composition of larval fish assemblages in the waters surrounding Taiwan Bank. While the increased influx of nutrients from upwelling ensures abundant food availability, the hydrographic conditions may not be suitable for every fish larva. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

24. The impact of coral reef ecosystems and upwelling events on the marine carbon dynamics of Southern Taiwan

Abstract

The ocean is the largest carbon reservoir and plays a crucial role in regulating atmospheric CO2 levels, especially in the face of climate change. In coral reef ecosystems, the complexity and importance of the carbonate system must be better appreciated as atmospheric CO2 concentrations continue to rise. This study measured pCO2 over time and space in Nanwan Bay, a coral reef ecosystem in Southern Taiwan, to identify factors that influence its variation. The results showed that mean pCO2 values varied seasonally, with values of 394 µatm in spring, 406 µatm in summer, 399 µatm in fall, and 367 µatm in winter. These seasonal differences (ΔpCO2) were -2, 14, 7, and -29 µatm, respectively. These findings suggest that the Nanwan Bay coral reef ecosystem acts as a sink for atmospheric CO2 during the spring and winter, with an average sea-air gas flux of -1 gC m-2 year-1 and a net annual uptake of -29 t. The carbonaceous parameters of the surface water in this high-biodiversity sub-tropical marine ecosystem were influenced not only by seasonal temperature variation but also by vertical mixing, intermittent upwelling, and biological effects.
