1. Improving the accuracy and consistency of the energy quadratization method with an energy-optimized technique

Abstract

We propose an energy-optimized invariant energy quadratization method to solve the gradient flow models in this paper, which requires only one linear energy-optimized step to correct the auxiliary variables on each time step. In addition to inheriting the benefits of the baseline and relaxed invariant energy quadratization method, our approach has several other advantages. Firstly, in the process of correcting auxiliary variables, we can directly solve linear programming problem by the energy-optimized technique, which greatly simplifies the nonlinear optimization problem in the previous relaxed invariant energy quadratization method. Secondly, we construct new linear unconditionally energy stable schemes by applying backward Euler formulas and Crank-Nicolson formula, so that the accuracy in time can reach the first- and second-order. Thirdly, comparing with relaxation technique, the modified energy obtained by energy-optimized technique is closer to the original energy, meanwhile the accuracy and consistency of the numerical solutions can be improved. 3. The stabilized exponential-SAV approach preserving maximum bound principle for nonlocal Allen-Cahn equation

Abstract

The nonlocal Allen-Cahn equation with nonlocal diffusion operator is a generalization of the classical Allen-Cahn equation. It satisfies the energy dissipation law and maximum bound principle (MBP), and is important for simulating a series of physical and biological phenomena involving long-distance interactions in space. In this paper, we construct first- and second-order (in time) accurate, unconditionally energy stable and MBP-preserving schemes for the nonlocal Allen-Cahn type model based on the stabilized exponential scalar auxiliary variable (sESAV) approach. On the one hand, we have proved the MBP and unconditional energy stability carefully and rigorously in the fully discrete levels. On the other hand, we adopt an efficient FFT-based fast solver to compute the nearly full coefficient matrix generated from the spatial discretization, which improves the computational efficiency. Finally, typical numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the performance of our proposed schemes.

4. The high-order exponential semi-implicit scalar auxiliary variable approach for nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation

Abstract

The nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard (NCH) equation with nonlocal diffusion operator is more suitable for the simulation of microstructure phase transition than the local Cahn-Hilliard (LCH) equation. In this paper, based on the exponential semi-implicit scalar auxiliary variable (ESI-SAV) method, the highly effcient and accurate schemes in time with unconditional energy stability for solving the NCH equation are proposed. On the one hand, we have demostrated the unconditional energy stability for the NCH equation with its high-order semi-discrete schemes carefully and rigorously. On the other hand, in order to reduce the calculation and storage cost in numerical simulation, we use the fast solver based on FFT and FCG for spatial discretization. Some numerical simulations involving the Gaussian kernel are presented and show the stability, accuracy, efficiency and unconditional energy stability of the proposed schemes.

29. Heterogeneous Fenton-like Catalyzation of Nanoscale Schwertmannite for Sulfamethoxazole Degradation.

Abstract

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) contamination in large quantities of wastewater can cause potential environmental problems. Due to difficulty in degrading SMX by natural processes, it is necessary to develop a novel technology to solve this problem. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been identified as methods with a high potential to treat recalcitrant organic pollutants. The nanoscale schwertmannite (nano-SWT) was prepared with an indoor-temperature synthesis method facilitated by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). In this study, we performed a reaction of the nano-SWT materials with Fenton-like catalysts for SMX degradation in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) media. The findings showed that the nano-SWT prepared by addition of 0.1 g·L−1 PVP (nano-SWT-n, n = 0.1) could degrade 92.5% of the SMX within 90 min at indoor temperature, which was due to the nano-SWT providing abundant reaction sites at the solid/solution interfaces. Additionally, SMX could be highly mineralized with 75% TOC removal and H2O2 was efficiently utilized during the nano-SWT/H2O2 process. In addition, after six cycles of Fenton-like degradation, the nano-SWT remained stable and reusable as a Fenton-like catalyst for SMX degradation. The nano-SWT performed well as a catalyst for SMX degradation. Additionally, this work provides a feasible environmental purification approach for the efficient degradation of SMX through the use of nanoscale schwertmannite as a catalyst in heterogeneous Fenton-like systems. Abstract

Recently, fluorescent dyes with a structure-inherent mitochondria-targeting capability have obtained great attention as single-molecule self-reporting theranostic agents to distinguish cancer cells from normal cells. However, there was little attempt using these dyes as a self-reporting ligand for cancer-targeted delivery of nanomaterials or drugs for personalized therapy. Herein, we developed a mitochondria-localized multifunctional nanodelivery system for cancer-targeted drug delivery and dual-modal imaging. First, a series of cyanine-structural small molecules with different-charged substituent groups have been screened based on their mitochondria targeting capability. Furthermore, the cyanine-structural molecule with the best mitochondria-targeting ability was decorated on iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) for dual-modal imaging. The nanoprobes entered into the cancer cell via the organic anion transporting polypeptide (OATP) pathway and anchored on mitochondria due to the strong interaction between the negative mitochondria membrane and the lipophilic cationic cyanine dye. This work opened an avenue using small molecules with structure-inherent-targeting and self-reporting characteristics as a chemical ligand to develop cancer-targeting and subcellular-localized delivery system.
