The major symptoms of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) are low back pain, radiative lower extremity pain, and lower limb movement disorder. Patients with LDH suffer from great distress in their daily life accompanied by severe economic hardship and difficulty in self-care, with an increasing tendency in the aging population. PubMed and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for relevant studies of spontaneous resorption or regression in LDH after conservative treatment and for other potential studies, which included those from inception to June 30, 2023. The objective of this narrative review is to summarize previous literatures about spontaneous resorption in LDH and to discuss the mechanisms and influencing factors in order to assess the probability of spontaneous resorption by conservative treatment. Spontaneous resorption without surgical treatment is influenced by the types and sizes of the LDH, inflammatory responses, and therapeutic factors. If the lumbar disc herniated tissue comprises a higher percentage of cartilage or modic changes have been shown on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), resorption in LDH is prevented. The bull's eye sign on enhanced MRI, which is a ring enhancement around a protruding disc, is a vital indicator for easy reabsorption. In addition, the type of extrusion and sequestration in LDH could forecast the higher feasibility of natural reabsorption. Moreover, the higher the proportion of protrusion on the intervertebral disc tissue within the spinal canal, the greater the likelihood of reabsorption. Therefore, which illustrates the feasibility of conservative treatments for LDH. Nonsurgical management of LDH with clinical symptoms is recommended by the authors.

This article introduces the concept of high-quality development proposed by the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China into the construction example of green mines in Bango Lake, integrates high-quality evaluation indicators with the previous evaluation system of green mines, provides new construction ideas for green mines, enriches the connotation of green mining, and contributes to the development of green mines. Provide reference for sustainable development and high-quality development.

Flavor profiles of various Pyrus spp. cultivars exhibit significant variations, yet the underlying flavor-contributing factors remain elusive. In this investigation, a comprehensive approach encompassing metabolomics analysis, volatile fingerprint analysis, and descriptive sensory analysis was employed to elucidate the flavor disparities among Nanguoli, Korla fragrant pear, and Qiuyueli cultivars and uncover potential flavor contributor. The study comprehensively characterized the categories and concentrations of nonvolatile and volatile metabolites, and 925 metabolites were identified. Flavonoids and esters dominated the highest cumulative response, respectively. Utilizing weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA), seven highly correlated modules were identified, yielding 407 pivotal metabolites. Further correlation analysis of the differential substances provided potential flavor constituents strongly associated with various sensory attributes; taste factors had a certain association with olfactory characteristics. Our findings demonstrated the manifestation of flavor was a result of the synergistic effect of various compounds; evaluation olfactory flavor necessitated a comprehensive consideration of taste substances.

BackgroundAdults living alone represent a growing population group in China. Understanding the prevalence of body mass index (BMI) categories and their associations with demographic and lifestyle factors among this group is essential for informing targeted interventions and public health policies.MethodsIn this population-based cross-sectional study, we used individual-level data from the 2011-2021 China General Social Survey. Main outcomes were prevalence of BMI categories adjusted for gender and age, using logistic regression and model-predicted marginal prevalence to estimate BMI categories prevalence.ResultsWe analyzed 9,077 single-living Chinese adult participants. The primary-adjusted prevalence of BMI categories varied across different genders and age groups. Underweight was more prevalent in females (12.73%; 95% CI: 12.31% - 13.14%) than in males (7.54%; 95% CI: 7.19% - 7.88%), while overweight and obesity were higher in males. Primary-adjusted underweight prevalence was highest among the 18-24 years age group (22.09%; 95% CI: 20.17% - 24.01%) and decreased with age. Primary-adjusted overweight prevalence increased with age, peaking in the 45-54 years age group (41.94%; 95% CI: 40.96% - 42.93%). Primary-adjusted obesity prevalence exhibited a fluctuating pattern across age groups, with the highest prevalence observed in the 45-54 years age group (9.81%; 95% CI: 9.19% - 10.44%).ConclusionOur findings reveal significant associations between BMI categories and demographic and lifestyle factors among adults living alone in China. These results can inform targeted interventions and public health policies aimed at promoting healthy weight management and addressing the unique health challenges faced by single-living individuals in China.

In this study, a self-responsive fluorescence aptasensor was established for the determination of lactoferrin (Lf) in dairy products. Herein, the aptamer itself functions as both a recognition element that specifically binds to Lf and a fluorescent signal reporter in conjunction with fluorescent moiety. In the presence of Lf, the aptamer preferentially binds to Lf due to its specific and high-affinity recognition by folding into a self-assembled and three-dimensional spatial structure. Meanwhile, its reduced spatial distance in the aptamer–Lf complex induces a FRET phenomenon based on the quenching of 6-FAM by amino acids in the Lf protein, resulting in a turn-off of the fluorescence of the system. As a result, the Lf concentration can be determined straightforwardly corresponding to the change in the self-responsive fluorescence signal. Under the optimized conditions, good linearities (R2 > 0.99) were achieved in an Lf concentration range of 2~10 μg/mL for both standard solutions and the spiked matrix, as well as with the desirable detection limits of 0.68 μg/mL and 0.46 μg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the fluorescence aptasensor exhibited reliable recoveries (89.5–104.3%) in terms of detecting Lf in three commercial samples, which is comparable to the accuracy of the HPCE method. The fluorescence aptasensor offers a user-friendly, cost-efficient, and promising sensor platform for point-of-need detection.

ObjectiveThe study aimed to explore the association between physical activity (PA) and PM2. 5-attributable cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality trends across the United States (US) at the state level.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study for PM2.5-attributable CVD mortality and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System for PA prevalence. The study covered all 50 US states and the District of Columbia from 2001 to 2019. We utilized Joinpoint Regression to calculate AAPC from 2011 to 2019 and Pearson correlation coefficients to assess state-level associations between PA and PM2.5-attributable CVD mortality AAPC.ResultsDuring 2011–2019, a total of 244,318 PM2.5-attributable CVD deaths were recorded. The age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) of PM2.5-attributable CVD declined substantially from 2011 to 2019 across all US states, with the most pronounced reductions observed in industrialized states such as West Virginia (51% decline), Kentucky (32%), and Ohio (22%). AAMR ratios for the US states varied substantially, ranging from 0.1 in Hawaii to 1.7 in Arkansas. The AAPC ranged from −9.4% (West Virginia) to −1.7% (New Mexico) in the majority of states, while a few states such as Alaska, Wyoming, and Washington saw slight positive AAPCs from 0.9 to 2.9%. A significant correlation was found between PA and PM2.5-attributable CVD mortality trends (r = 0.454, p = 0.001), with similar results in subgroup analyses.ConclusionOur findings suggest a correlation between increased physical activity (PA) and increased PM2.5-attributable CVD mortality, highlighting the potential need to consider PM2.5 exposure when engaging in PA to mitigate adverse cardiovascular health impacts. However, further research is warranted to establish causality and underlying mechanisms in the relationship between PA and PM2.5-attributable CVD mortality. Potential limitations include reliance on self-reported PA data.

BackgroundParticularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has become a significant public health concern in China due to its harmful effects on human health. This study aimed to examine the trends in all causes and cause specific morality burden attributable to PM2.5 pollution in China.MethodsWe extracted data on all causes and cause specific mortality data attributable to PM2.5 exposure for the period 1990-2019 in China from the Global Burden of Disease 2019. The average annual percent change (AAPC) in age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) and years of life lost (YLLs) due to PM2.5 exposure were calculated using the Joinpoint Regression Program. Using Pearson's correlation, we estimated association between burden trends, urban green space area, and higher education proportions.ResultsDuring the period 1990-1999, there were increases in mortality rates for All causes (1.6%, 95% CI: 1.5% to 1.8%), Diabetes mellitus (5.2%, 95% CI: 4.9% to 5.5%), Encephalitis (3.1%, 95% CI: 2.6% to 3.5%), Ischemic heart disease (3.3%, 95% CI: 3% to 3.6%), and Tracheal, bronchus and lung cancer (5%, 95% CI: 4.7% to 5.2%). In the period 2010-2019, Diabetes mellitus still showed an increase in mortality rates, but at a lower rate with an AAPC of 1.2% (95% CI: 1% to 1.4%). Tracheal bronchus and lung cancer showed a smaller increase in this period, with an AAPC of 0.5% (95% CI: 0.3% to 0.6%). In terms of YLLs, the trends appear to be similar.ConclusionOur findings highlight increasing trends in disease burden attributable to PM2.5 in China, particularly for diabetes mellitus, tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer.

Lactoferrin (Lf), an iron-binding glycoprotein, regulates the immune system. It has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and is critical for child physical growth and development. As a common additive in the dairy industry, it is crucial to quantify LF content. This study established a self-assembly and universal fluorescence aptasensor for detecting LF in milk powder based on structure-selective dyes of PicoGreen intercalated in the label-free aptamer. Herein, the aptamer functions as both a specific recognition element against targets and a fluorescent signal reporter integrated with structure-selective dyes. First, the aptamer folds into a three-dimensional spatial structure based on complementary base pairings and intermolecular weak non-covalent interactions. Then, the dye is intercalated into the minor groove structures of the aptamer and triggers its potential fluorescent property. When the target exists, the aptamer binds to it preferentially, and its space structure unfolds. This causes the freeing of the subsequent dye and decreases the corresponding fluorescence. Hence, the reflected fluorescence signals could directly determine the target concentrations. Under the optimum conditions, a good linear relationship (R2, 0.980) was obtained in the Lf range from 20 to 500 nM with a detection limit of 3 nM (2.4 mg/kg) and good specificity, as well as a reliable recovery of 95.8–105.1% in milk powder. In addition, the universality was also confirmed with a good performance by quickly changing the aptamers against other targets (chlorpyrifos, acetamiprid, bovine thyroglobulin, and human transferrin) or utilizing another fluorescence dye. Therefore, this self-assembly aptasensor provides a universal and concise strategy for effective detection.

With the purpose to improve antiproliferative activity, 26 new betulonic acid-diazine derivatives were designed and synthesized from betulinic acid. The anticancer activity of these semi-synthetic compounds was evaluated by MTT assay in both tumor cell lines and normal cell line. The results indicated that majority of new compounds exhibited improved antitumor activity compared with the parent compound betulonic acid. Compound BoA2C, in particular, had the most significant action with IC50 value of 3.39 μM against MCF-7 cells, while it showed lower cytotoxicity on MDCK cell line than cisplatin. Furthermore, we discovered that BoA2C strongly increased MCF-7 cell damage mostly by influencing arginine and fatty acid metabolism. In addition, the structure-activity relationships were briefly discussed. The results of this study suggested that the introduction of different diazines at C-28 could selectively inhibit different kinds of cancer cells and might be an effective way to synthesize potent anticancer lead compound from betulonic acid.

Diet is the main intake source of selenium (Se) in the body. Southern Jiangxi is the largest navel orange-producing area in China, and 25.98% of its arable land is Se-rich. However, studies on the Se-rich characteristics and Se dietary evaluation of navel orange fruits in the natural environment of southern Jiangxi have not been reported. This study was large-scale and in situ samplings (n = 492) of navel oranges in southern Jiangxi with the goal of investigating the coupling relationships among Se, nutritional elements, and quality indicators in fruits and systematically evaluating Se dietary nutrition to the body. The results indicated that the average content of total Se in the flesh was 4.92 μg⋅kg–1, and the percentage of Se-rich navel oranges (total Se ≥ 10 μg⋅kg–1 in the flesh) was 7.93%, of which 66.74% of the total Se was distributed in the pericarp and 33.26% in the flesh. The average content of total Se in the flesh of Yudu County was the highest at 5.71 μg⋅kg–1. There was a significant negative correlation (p < 0.05) between Se, Cu, and Zn in the Se-rich flesh. According to the Se content in the flesh, the Se dietary nutrition evaluation was carried out, and it was found that the Se-enriched navel orange provided a stronger Se nutritional potential for the human body. These findings will help to identify Se enrichment in navel orange fruit in China’s largest navel orange-producing area and guide the selection of Se-rich soils for navel orange production in the future.

To comprehensively understand the volatile compounds and assess the aroma profiles of different types of Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim. Anli, Dongmili, Huagai, Jianbali, Jingbaili, Jinxiangshui, and Nanguoli were detected via headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with two-dimensional gas chromatography/time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS). The aroma composition, total aroma content, proportion and number of different aroma types, and the relative quantities of each compound were analyzed and evaluated. The results showed that 174 volatile aroma compounds were detected in various cultivars, mainly including esters, alcohols, aldehydes, and alkenes: Jinxiangshui had the highest total aroma content at 2825.59 ng/g; and Nanguoli had the highest number of aroma species detected at 108. The aroma composition and content varied among pear varieties, and the pears could be divided into three groups based on principal component analysis. Twenty-four kinds of aroma scents were detected; among them, fruit and aliphatic were the main fragrance types. The proportions of aroma types also varied among different varieties, visually and quantitatively displaying changes of the whole aroma of the different varieties of pears brought by the changes in aroma composition. This study contributes to further research on volatile compound analysis, and provides useful data for the improvement of fruit sensory quality and breeding work.

Traffic sign detection is an important part of environment-aware technology and has great potential in the field of intelligent transportation. In recent years, deep learning has been widely used in the field of traffic sign detection, achieving excellent performance. Due to the complex traffic environment, recognizing and detecting traffic signs is still a challenging project. In this paper, a model with global feature extraction capabilities and a multi-branch lightweight detection head is proposed to increase the detection accuracy of small traffic signs. First, a global feature extraction module is proposed to enhance the ability of extracting features and capturing the correlation within the features through self-attention mechanism. Second, a new, lightweight parallel decoupled detection head is proposed to suppress redundant features and separate the output of the regression task from the classification task. Finally, we employ a series of data enhancements to enrich the context of the dataset and improve the robustness of the network. We conducted a large number of experiments to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is 86.3%, the recall is 82.1%, the mAP@0.5 is 86.5% and the mAP@0.5:0.95 is 65.6% in TT100K dataset, while the number of frames transmitted per second is stable at 73, which meets the requirement of real-time detection.

WSe2, an intriguing transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) material with high-performance electronic and optoelectronics property, is emerging as next-generation photoelectronic devices. In this contribution, by applying WSe2 nanofilm as a saturable absorber in an Er-doped fiber laser, versatile mode-locked operations of conventional soliton, soliton molecules and dual-wavelength mode locked state can be experimentally observed. By properly setting the state of the polarization controller and pump power, the phase difference and pulse separation of soliton molecules can be adjusted. The soliton molecule with four steady phase difference (0, ±π/2, π) are realized in the fiber laser with TMDs based SA for the first time, to our knowledge. Meanwhile, a novel dual-wavelength mode-locked state with a soliton singlet and a soliton molecule is also obtained. Experiments results show that WSe2 is a suitable SA for vector soliton and soliton molecules generation.

The application of nanotechnology for antimicrobial delivery has capacity to improve antibacterial efficacy. Currently, the usage of various inorganic and organic carriers, such as metal ions, nano-silicon and surfactants, might increase the potential toxicity of nanoparticles and make their clinical transformation more difficult. Herein, a nano-delivery system was constructed by direct self-assembly of antibacterial phytochemicals (berberine and rhein) originated from traditional Chinese medicine Coptis chinensis Franch. and Rheum palmatum L., respectively. Combining X-ray single crystal diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance and other spectra characterizations, the stacked structure of nanoparticles was profoundly demonstrated. Briefly, rhein acted as the layered backbone and berberine embedded in it. In vitro bacteriostasis experiment showed the minimum bactericidal concentration of nanoparticles was 0.1 μmol/mL, which was lower than that of berberine and rhein. The results of confocal laser scanning microscope, biofilm quantitive assay and scanning electron microscopy indicated that nanoparticles had strong inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus biofilm. More importantly, transmission electron microscopy and mass spectra indicated the further bacteriostatic mechanism of nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the nanoparticles had well biocompatibility and safety. Current study will open up new prospect that the design of self-assemblies between active phytochemicals can be originated from traditional Chinese medicine combination.

Glutathione (GSH) is the most abundant non-protein thiol in biofluids, enabling diverse physiological functions. Among the proposed methods for GSH detection, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) has the advantages of high sensitivity and efficiency. In this study, a novel analytical method was developed for the determination of GSH using supramolecular solvent (SUPRAS)-based dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction (DLLME) and UHPLC–HRMS. N-Laurylmaleimide was dissolved in tetrahydrofuran, which served three functions: 1) precipitate the proteins present in the biofluid sample, 2) provide a reaction environment for derivatization, and 3) enable the use of SUPRAS as the dispersing agent. Critical parameters were optimized based on single factor testing and response surface methodology. The established method was validated in terms of linearity, accuracy, precision, and successful quantitative analysis of GSH in saliva, urine, and plasma samples. Experimental results showed that SUPRAS as an extraction solvent was particularly suitable for the extraction of GSH from complex matrices. The current study provides a useful tool for accurate measurements of GSH concentrations, which could potentially be used for clinical diagnostics.

Researchers often focus on the mechanisms of synergistic agents, a few explore drug combinations that enhance toxicity, while few have studied the internal mechanism of compatibility enhancement in chemical level. Herein, we present a comprehensive analysis based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS) and a self-assembled supramolecular strategy, which reveals the toxicity-enhancing essence of glycyrrhizic acid originated in licorice when combined with Genkwa Flos. Through this method, we discovered the toxicity was enhanced through the formation of a supramolecular complex from Genkwa Flos/glycyrrhizic acid. The morphology and size distribution of the self-assembled nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering Furthermore, a total of 58 constituents (eight diterpenoids, 35 flavonoids, five phenylpropanoids, four nucleosides, two amino acids, and four other compounds) consisted from the supramolecular complex were identified through accurate-mass measurements in full-scan MS/data-dependent MS/MS mode. Based on the hydrophobic interaction of glycyrrhizic acid with yuanhuacine (one of main ingredients from Genkwa Flos), the supramolecular self-assembly mechanism was revealed with proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and NOESY 2D NMR. The toxicity of Genkwa Flos and Genkwa Flos/glycyrrhizic acid supramolecular complex were compared through in vitro studies on L-02 cells using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay; and 4′,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining was performed to further confirm the enhancement inhibition of Genkwa Flos/glycyrrhizic acid supramolecular complex than Genkwa Flos. This study provides fundamental scientific evidence of the formation of a self-assembled phytochemical supramolecular when Genkwa Flos and glycyrrhizic acid are combined, enabling to understand their clinical incompatibility and contraindication.

Lactoferrin (Lf), as a popular nutritional fortification in dairy products, has the ability regulate the body’s immune system and function as a broad-spectrum antibacterial, which is of great significance to the growth and development of infants and children. Herein, an indirect competitive enzyme-linked aptamer assay (ELAA) kit was established for rapid, sensitive, and visual determination of Lf in dairy products. In the construction, the Lf aptamer was conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as the recognition probe and aptamer complementary strand (cDNA) were anchored onto the microplate as the capture probe. The recognition probes were first mixed with a sample solution and specifically bound with the contained Lf, then added into the microplate in which the free recognition probes in the mixture were captured by the capture probe. After washing, the remaining complex of cDNA/Aptamer/HRP in the microplate was conducted with a chromogenic reaction through HRP, efficiently catalyzing the substrate 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), therefore the color shade would directly reflect Lf concentration. Under the optimization conditions, a good linear relationship (R2, 0.9901) was obtained in the wide range of 25–500 nM with the detection limit of 14.01 nM and a good specificity, as well as the reliable recoveries. Furthermore, the ELAA kits achieved the Lf determination with an accuracy of 79.71~116.99% in eleven samples, which consisted of three kinds of dairy products: including goat milk powder, cow milk powder, and nutrition drop. Moreover, the results were also validated by the high-performance capillary electrophoresis (HPCE) method. The ELAA kit provides a simple and convenient determination for Lf in dairy products, and it is highly expected to be commercialized.

Avoiding interference and realizing the precise detection of mycotoxins in complex food samples is still an urgent problem for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) analysis technology. Herein, a highly sensitive and specific aptasensor was developed for the anti-interference detection of Ochratoxin A (OTA). In this aptasensor, 4-[(Trimethylsilyl) ethynyl] aniline was employed as an anti-interference Raman reporter to prove a sharp Raman peak (1998 cm−1) in silent region, which could avoid the interference of food bio-molecules in 600–1800 cm−1. 4-TEAE and OTA-aptamer were assembled on Au NPs to serve as anti-interference SERS probes. Meanwhile, Fe3O4 NPs, linked with complementary aptamer (cApts), were applied as capture probes. The specific binding of OTA to aptamer hindered the complementary binding of aptamer and cApt, which inhibited the binding of SERS probes and capture probes. Hence, the Raman responses at 1998 cm−1 were negatively correlated with the OTA level. Under the optimum condition, the aptasensor presented a linear response for OTA detection in the range of 0.1–40 nM, with low detection limits of 30 pM. In addition, the aptasensor was successfully applied to quantify OTA in soybean, grape and milk samples. Accordingly, this anti-interference aptasensor could perform specific, sensitive and precise detection of OTA in real samples, and proved a reliable reference strategy for other small-molecules detection in food samples.

In the propagation phase of a dielectric metasurface, there are two important problems. Firstly, the range of transmittance of the nanopillars for a building metasurface is usually between 60% and 100%, which reduces the metasurface’s overall transmittance and affects the uniformity of the transmitted light. Secondly, the realistic phase provided by the nanopillar cannot be matched very well with the theoretical phase at each lattice location.The phase difference (between a realistic phase and theoretical phase) may reach tens of degrees. Here, we propose an interesting method to solve these problems. With this new method, a metalens is designed in this paper. The nanopillars for building the metalens have transmittance over 0.95, which increases the metalens transmittance and improves the light uniformity. In addition, with the new method, the phase differences of all elements in the metalens can also be reduced to be below 0.05°, decreasing the metalens spherical aberration dramatically. This method not only helps us to optimize the metalens but also provides a useful way for designing high-quality metasurfaces.

In this study, an Er:YAG laser pumped intra-cavity Tm:YAG-Ho:GdVO4 laser was built and debuted at room temperature. At an incident pump power of 9.2 W, this laser obtained a maximum output power of 1.6 W with a slope efficiency of 28.0%. Additionally, the M2 factors at the maximum output power were measured to be 1.06 and 1.03 in the x and y directions, respectively. The results showed that the intra-cavity pumping method of combining thulium and holmium crystals as the gain medium was an effective way to obtain a 2 μm laser with near diffraction limited beam quality.

PurposeTo develop a diagnostic model for histological subtypes in lung cancer combined CT and FDG PET.MethodsMachine learning binary and four class classification of a cohort of 445 lung cancer patients who have CT and PET simultaneously. The outcomes to be predicted were primary, metastases (Mts), adenocarcinoma (Adc), and squamous cell carcinoma (Sqc). The classification method is a combination of machine learning and feature selection that is a Partition-Membership. The performance metrics include accuracy (Acc), precision (Pre), area under curve (AUC) and kappa statistics.ResultsThe combination of CT and PET radiomics (CPR) binary model showed more than 98% Acc and AUC on predicting Adc, Sqc, primary, and metastases, CPR four-class classification model showed 91% Acc and 0.89 Kappa.ConclusionThe proposed CPR models can be used to obtain valid predictions of histological subtypes in lung cancer patients, assisting in diagnosis and shortening the time to diagnostic.

Purpose: To find out the CT radiomics features of differentiating lung adenocarcinoma from another lung cancer histological type.Methods: This was a historical cohort study, three independent lung cancer cohorts included. One cohort was used to evaluate the stability of radiomics features, one cohort was used to feature selection, and the last was used to construct and evaluate classification models. The research is divided into four steps: region of interest segmentation, feature extraction, feature selection, and model building and validation. The feature selection methods included the intraclass correlation coefficient, ReliefF coefficient, and Partition-Membership filter. The performance metrics of the classification model included accuracy (Acc), precision (Pre), area under curve (AUC), and kappa statistics.Results: The 10 features (First order shape features: Sphericity and Compacity, Gray-Level Run Length Matrix: Short-Run Emphasis, Low Gray-level Run Emphasis, and High Gray-level Run Emphasis, Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix: Homogeneity, Energy, Contrast, Correlation, and Dissimilarity) showed the most stable and classification capability. The 6 classifiers, Logistic regression classifier (LR), Sequence Minimum Optimization algorithm, Random Forest, KStar, Naive Bayes and Random Committee, have great performance both on the train and the test sets, and especially LR has the best performance on the test set (Acc = 98.72, Pre = 0.988, AUC = 1, and kappa = 0.974).Conclusion: Lung adenocarcinoma can be identified based on CT radiomics features. We can diagnose lung adenocarcinoma with CT non-invasively.

Ho: GdVO4 crystal is the host material for the production of laser working in the middle infrared range. In this contribution, the characteristic parameters of the Ho: GdVO4 crystal were measured, and the material was used as a gain medium to build a diode-pumped laser for the first time, to reach a laser output at 2047.9 nm. The output beam quality factor M2 was measured to be 1.4 and 1.3 in x-direction and y-direction, respectively. In addition, the influence of the transmittance of the output mirror on the generation of laser was obtained through exploration. The results showed that the laser wavelength blue-shifted as the output transmittance increased.

Hau Kiou Choaan represents a fresh enquiry into literary orientalism in Britain of the eighteenth century. This article will discuss Percy's adaptation of Hau Kiou Choaan from an original Chinese novel, and how the ways in which Percy interprets the Chinese novel signify his peculiar views of China. On the title page of Hau Kiou Choaan; or, The Pleasing History (1761), Thomas Percy quotes from Jean-Baptiste Du Halde’s A Description of the Empire of China and of Chinese Tartary (1738): ‘There is no better means of instruction on China than letting China speak for herself’. It remains questionable, whether by presenting an original piece of Chinese literature, Percy has really let China ‘speak for herself’; it is reasonable to argue that Hau Kiou Choaan carries as much information about China as it does about Percy’s own perceptions of this country. Whether Percy’s works and views of China provoked louder criticism or higher praise, his input into the studies of China was a positive one, for it contributed to an increasingly vigorous debate that would increasingly perceive differences as a source of strength, not weakness.

In the present study we have developed a direct competitive CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD) fluorescence assay based on micro-array-imprinted membranes for the determination of triazophos in cabbage and apple. The imprinted membranes were directly synthesized on the surface of a 96-well plate by thermal polymerization using triadimefon as the dummy template. Under optimal conditions, the assay showed an excellent linear response over the concentration ranges of 0.1–10,000 μg L−1 with a good coefficient of determination (R2= 0.982). The sensitivity (IC50) and limit of detection (LOD, expressed as IC15) of the developed assay were 3.63 mg L−1 and 0.31 μg L−1, respectively. The applicability of the developed approach was tested for detecting triazophos in incurred samples. The method showed excellent recoveries (109.6–118.9%) and relative standard deviations (RSDs) between 9.9 and 19.5%. The obtained results correlated well with those obtained by LC-MS/MS (R2= 0.9995). The competitive assay using CdSe/ZnS QDs as fluorescence-labeled probe showed good sensitivity, steady and fast response, and excellent anti-interference ability compared to conventional fluorescence-quenching methods. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed methodology was successfully applied for detection of triazophos in real samples.

Activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) are the main extracellular matrix (ECM)-producing cells in the injured liver and the key mediators of liver fibrosis; they also promote the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In the acidic extracellular microenvironment of HCC, HSCs are activated to promote the migration of HCC cells. It is worth attempting to alter the weak acidic microenvironment to promote activated HSC apoptosis to treat liver fibrosis and liver cancer. In the present study, a series of novel OA-amino acids analogues were designed and synthesized to introduce different amino acids in the 3-hydroxyl of OA using the ester condensation reaction to enhance hydrophilicity, alkalinity, and biological activity. We found that OA-lysine derivative (3g) could improve the hydrophilic of OA and induce HSCs apoptosis via inducing MMP depolarization and increasing intracellular Ca2+ levels. Additionally, 3g displayed a better hepatoprotective effect than OA (20 mg/kg, intragastric administration) against the acute liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in mice. The results suggested that basic amino acids (lysine) could effectively enhance OA’s hydrophilicity, alkalinity, and hepatoprotective activity in vitro and in vivo, which might be likely associated with increasing bioavailability and altering an extracellular weak acidic microenvironment with further verification. Therefore, the OA-lysine derivative (3g) has the potential to be developed as an agent with hepatoprotective activity.

Previous studies have shown that compounds in the form of precipitate (CFP) from Huang-Lian-Jie-Du-Tang (HLJDT) were stable, and the CFP content reached 2.63% of the whole decoction and had good neuroprotective effects. However, there has been no research on their specific source. In this study, it was found that HLJDT CFP mainly came from the reaction of Scutellaria baicalensis and Coptis chinensis by studying the separated prescription components (accounting for 81.33% of HLJDT CFP). Unlike previous studies on HLJDT CFP, in this research the chemical composition of Scutellaria baicalensis–Coptis chinensis (SB–CC) CFP was identified by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (HPLC-MSn), which further proved that the main source of HLJDT CFP was Scutellaria baicalensis–Coptis chinensis CFP compared with previous HLJDT CFP studies. To explain the reaction mechanism between the decoctions of Scutellaria baicalensis and Coptis chinensis, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was used to analyze their binding heat and the thermodynamic parameters (ΔH, ΔS, ΔG, n, Ka) of the reaction between baicalin and berberine, which are the main components of Scutellaria baicalensis and Coptis chinensis, respectively. The results showed that the reaction between decoctions of Scutellaria baicalensis and Coptis chinensis was exothermic and the reaction between baicalin and berberine was a spontaneous and enthalpy-driven chemical reaction, the binding ratio being 1:1. In addition, HLJDT CFP (EC50 = 14.71 ± 0.91 µg/mL) and SB-CC CFP (EC50 = 6.11 ± 0.12 µg/mL) showed similar protective activities on PC12 cells injured by cobalt chloride (CoCl2). This study provided a new angle to research on the main chemical components and therapeutic values of CFP in Traditional Chinese Medicine compounds.

A novel hepatoprotective oleanolic acid derivative, 3-oxours-oleana-9(11), 12-dien-28-oic acid (Oxy-Di-OA), has been reported. In previous studies, we found that Oxy-Di-OA presented the anti-HBV (Hepatitis B Virus) activity (IC50 = 3.13 µg/mL). Remarkably, it is superior to lamivudine in the inhibition of the rebound of the viral replication rate. Furthermore, Oxy-Di-OA showed good performance of anti-HBV activity in vivo. Some studies showed that liver fibrosis may affiliate with HBV gene mutations. In addition, the anti-hepatic fibrosis activity of Oxy-Di-OA has not been studied. Therefore, we evaluated the protective effect of Oxy-Di-OA against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver injury in rats. Daily intraperitoneally administration of Oxy-Di-OA prevented the development of CCl4-induced liver fibrosis, which was evidenced by histological study and immunohistochemical analysis. The entire experimental protocol lasted nine weeks. Oxy-Di-OA significantly suppressed the increases of plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels (p < 0.05). Furthermore, Oxy-Di-OA could prevent expression of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1). It is worth noting that the high-dose group Oxy-Di-OA is superior to bifendate in elevating hepatic function. Compared to the model group, Oxy-Di-OA in the high-dose group and low-dose group can significantly reduce the liver and spleen indices (p < 0.05). The acute toxicity test showed that LD50 and a 95% confidence interval (CIs) value of Oxy-Di-OA were 714.83 mg/kg and 639.73–798.73 mg/kg via intraperitoneal injection in mice, respectively. The LD50 value of Oxy-Di-OA exceeded 2000 mg/kg via gavage in mice. In addition, a simple and rapid high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) method was developed and validated to study the pharmacokinetic characteristics of the compound. After single-dose oral administration, time to reach peak concentration of Oxy-Di-OA (Cmax = 8.18 ± 0.66 μg/mL) was 10 ± 2.19 h; the elimination half-life and area under the concentration-time curve from t = 0 to the last time of Oxy-Di-OA was 2.19 h and 90.21 μg·h/mL, respectively.

Although the aerodynamic loading of wind turbine blades under various conditions has been widely studied, the radial distribution of load along the blade under various yaw conditions and with blade flapping phenomena is poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the effects of second-order flapwise vibration on the mean and fluctuation characteristics of the torque and axial thrust of wind turbines under yaw conditions using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In the CFD model, the blades are segmented radially to comprehensively analyze the distribution patterns of torque, axial load, and tangential load. The following results are obtained. (i) After applying flapwise vibration, the torque and axial thrust of wind turbines decrease in relation to those of the rigid model, with significantly increased fluctuations. (ii) Flapwise vibration causes the blades to reciprocate along the axial direction, altering the local angle of attack and velocity of the blades relative to the incoming wind flow. This results in the contraction of the torque region from a circular shape to a complex “gear” shape, which is accompanied by evident oscillations. (iii) Compared to the tangential load, the axial load on the blades is more sensitive to flapwise vibration although both exhibit significantly enhanced fluctuations. This study not only reveals the impact of flapwise vibration on wind turbine blade performance, including the reduction of torque and axial thrust and increased operational fluctuations, but also clarifies the radial distribution patterns of blade aerodynamic characteristics, which is of great significance for optimizing wind turbine blade design and reducing fatigue risks. Abstract Background Penicillium oxalicum is an important fungal agent in the composting of cattle manure, but the changes that occur in the microbial community, physicochemical factors, and potential functions of microorganisms at different time points are still unclear. To this end, the dynamic changes occurring in the microbial community and physicochemical factors and their correlations during the composting of cattle manure with Penicillium oxalicum were analysed. Results The results showed that the main phyla observed throughout the study period were Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Halanaerobiaeota, Apicomplexa and Ascomycota. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) illustrated that Chitinophagales and Eurotiomycetes were biomarker species of bacteria and eukaryote in samples from Days 40 and 35, respectively. Bacterial community composition was significantly correlated with temperature and pH, and eukaryotic microorganism community composition was significantly correlated with moisture content and NH4 +-N according to redundancy analysis (RDA). The diversity of the microbial communities changed significantly, especially that of the main pathogenic microorganisms, which showed a decreasing trend or even disappeared after composting. Conclusions In conclusion, a combination of high-throughput sequencing and physicochemical analysis was used to identify the drivers of microbial community succession and the composition of functional microbiota during cattle manure composting with Penicillium oxalicum. The results offer a theoretical framework for explaining microecological assembly during cattle manure composting with Penicillium oxalicum.

Abstract Visual adaptive devices have potential to simplify circuits and algorithms in machine vision systems to adapt and perceive images with varying brightness levels, which is however limited by sluggish adaptation process. Here, the avalanche tuning as feedforward inhibition in bionic two-dimensional (2D) transistor is proposed for fast and high-frequency visual adaptation behavior with microsecond-level accurate perception, the adaptation speed is over 104 times faster than that of human retina and reported bionic sensors. As light intensity changes, the bionic transistor spontaneously switches between avalanche and photoconductive effect, varying responsivity in both magnitude and sign (from 7.6 × 104 to −1 × 103 A/W), thereby achieving ultra-fast scotopic and photopic adaptation process of 108 and 268 μs, respectively. By further combining convolutional neural networks with avalanche-tuned bionic transistor, an adaptative machine vision is achieved with remarkable microsecond-level rapid adaptation capabilities and robust image recognition with over 98% precision in both dim and bright conditions.
