1. Exploring the Influence of Graph Operations on Zero Forcing Sets

Abstract

Zero forcing in graphs is a coloring process where a colored vertex can force its unique uncolored neighbor to be colored. A zero forcing set is a set of initially colored vertices capable of eventually coloring all vertices of the graph. In this paper, we focus on the numbers $z(G; i)$, which is the number of zero forcing sets of size $i$ of the graph $G$. These numbers were initially studied by Boyer et al. where they conjectured that for any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices, $z(G; i) \leq z(P_n; i)$ for all $i \geq 1$ where $P_n$ is the path graph on $n$ vertices. The main aim of this paper is to show that several classes of graphs, including outerplanar graphs and threshold graphs, satisfy this conjecture. Abstract

It is known that for the Young diagram of any partition of $n$, the sum of squares of the hook lengths of its cells is exactly $n^2$ more than that sum of squares of the contents of its cells. That is, for any $\lambda \vdash n$, \begin{equation*} \sum_{u \in \lambda} h(u)^2 = n^2 + \sum_{u \in \lambda} c(u)^2. \end{equation*} We provide a bijective proof of this fact, thus solving a problem posed by Stanley. Along the way, we obtain a formula for the number of rectangles in the Young diagram of a partition. 8. Sketches, moves and partitions: counting regions of deformations of reflection arrangements

Abstract

The collection of reflecting hyperplanes of a finite Coxeter group is called a reflection arrangement and it appears in many subareas of combinatorics and representation theory. We focus on the problem of counting regions of reflection arrangements and their deformations. Inspired by the recent work of Bernardi, we show that the notion of moves and sketches can be used to provide a uniform and explicit bijection between regions of (the Catalan deformation of) a reflection arrangement and certain non-nesting partitions. We then use the exponential formula to describe a statistic on these partitions such that distribution is given by the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial. Finally, we consider a sub-arrangement of type C arrangement called the threshold arrangement and its Catalan and Shi deformations., Comment: 49 pages, 15 figures

10. Subsequence frequency in binary words

Abstract

The numbers we study in this paper are of the form $B_{n, p}(k)$, which is the number of binary words of length $n$ that contain the word $p$ (as a subsequence) exactly $k$ times. Our motivation comes from the analogous study of pattern containment in permutations. In our first set of results, we obtain explicit expressions for $B_{n, p}(k)$ for small values of $k$. We then focus on words $p$ with at most $3$ runs and study the maximum number of occurrences of $p$ a word of length $n$ can have. We also study the internal zeros in the sequence $(B_{n, p}(k))_{k \geq 0}$ for fixed $n$ and discuss the unimodality and log-concavity of such sequences., Comment: 17 pages

11. Dyck paths, binary words, and Grassmannian permutations avoiding an increasing pattern

Abstract

A permutation is called Grassmannian if it has at most one descent. The study of pattern avoidance in such permutations was initiated by Gil and Tomasko in 2021. We continue this work by studying Grassmannian permutations that avoid an increasing pattern. In particular, we count the Grassmannian permutations of size $m$ avoiding the identity permutation of size $k$, thus solving a conjecture made by Weiner. We also refine our counts to special classes such as odd Grassmannian permutations and Grassmannian involutions. We prove most of our results by relating Grassmannian permutations to Dyck paths and binary words., Comment: Minor changes, to appear in Annals of Combinatorics

Abstract

A hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a finite collection of affine hyperplanes. Counting regions of hyperplane arrangements is an active research direction in enumerative combinatorics. In this paper, we consider the arrangement $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ given by $\{x_i=0 \mid i \in [n]\} \cup \{x_i=a^kx_j \mid k \in [-m,m], 1\leq i1$. It turns out that this family of arrangements is closely related to the well-studied extended Catalan arrangement of type $A$. We prove that the number of regions of $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ is a certain generalization of Catalan numbers called two parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers. We then exhibit a bijection between these regions and certain decorated Dyck paths. We also compute the characteristic polynomial and give a combinatorial interpretation for its coefficients. Most of our results also generalize to sub-arrangements of $\mathcal{A}_n^{(m)}$ by relating them to deformations of the braid arrangement., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Comments welcome

17. A branch statistic for trees: Interpreting coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of braid deformations

Abstract

A hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a finite collection of affine hyperplanes. The regions are the connected components of the complement of these hyperplanes. By a theorem of Zaslavsky, the number of regions of a hyperplane arrangement is the sum of coefficients of its characteristic polynomial. Arrangements that contain hyperplanes parallel to subspaces whose defining equations are $x_i - x_j = 0$ form an important class called the deformations of the braid arrangement. In a recent work, Bernardi showed that regions of certain deformations are in one-to-one correspondence with certain labeled trees. In this article, we define a statistic on these trees such that the distribution is given by the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial. 18. Pattern avoidance of $[4,k]$-pairs in circular permutations

Abstract

The study of pattern avoidance in linear permutations has been an active area of research for almost half a century now, starting with the work of Knuth in 1973. More recently, the question of pattern avoidance in circular permutations has gained significant attention. In 2002-03, Callan and Vella independently characterized circular permutations avoiding a single permutation of size $4$. Building on their results, Domagalski et al. studied circular pattern avoidance for multiple patterns of size $4$. In this article, our main aim is to study circular pattern avoidance of $[4,k]$-pairs, i.e., circular permutations avoiding one pattern of size 4 and another of size $k$. We do this by using well-studied combinatorial objects to represent circular permutations avoiding a single pattern of size $4$. In particular, we obtain upper bounds for the number of Wilf equivalence classes of $[4,k]$-pairs. Moreover, we prove that the obtained bound is tight when the pattern of size $4$ in consideration is $[1342]$. Abstract

In this paper we consider the hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ whose hyperplanes are $\{x_i + x_j = 1\mid 1\leq i < j\leq n\}\cup \{x_i=0,1\mid 1\leq i\leq n\}$. We call it the \emph{boxed threshold arrangement} since we show that the bounded regions of this arrangement are contained in an $n$-cube and are in one-to-one correspondence with the labeled threshold graphs on $n$ vertices. The problem of counting regions of this arrangement was studied earlier by Joungmin Song. He determined the characteristic polynomial of this arrangement by relating its coefficients to the count of certain graphs. Here, we provide bijective arguments to determine the number of regions. In particular, we construct certain signed partitions of the set $\{-n,\dots, n\}\setminus\{0\}$ and also construct colored threshold graphs on $n$ vertices and show that both these objects are in bijection with the regions of the boxed threshold arrangement. Abstract

This article explores three moments in recent history where Indian women's bodies--seen and unseen--highlight the centrality of the female body in the changing political discourse of India. The first moment, the Shaheen Bagh moment, is characterized by the body marked as 'Muslim woman' and her occupation of public squares and streets (the protests in 2019-20 against the Citizenship Amendment Act). The second moment is the female body that engaged in unprecedented care work while being subjected to heightened levels of violence in the times of the pandemic, and the third moment is the resilient female body in struggle against neo-liberal farm laws. The Muslim woman's body--culturally othered in numerous ways in South Asia and by the Indian state and its cultural representations--occupied center stage in a unique blend of volatility and performativity as women stepped outside their domestic spaces in order to stake their claim to a larger space at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi--that of home ('watan') or country, even as they were threatened by the Citizenship Act and the NRC. Pushed back into their homes by the pandemic, they were put into enforced lockdown where their leader's call was to 'stay home, stay safe,' which was deeply euphemistic and ironic given the levels of domestic violence that raged during the forced captivity. The article also shows how the year 2021 witnessed women at the border outside the Indian capital of Delhi, during the farmers' agitation, occupying spaces and organizing themselves into bodies of protest. Abstract

Background: Sarcopenia is a muscle disease that occur across a lifetime. It is commonly described in the aging population but can occur earlier in life in patients with cancer. Previous studies demonstrated sarcopenia is highly prevalent in patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (GEP-NETs). In solid organ cancers, such as colorectal or pancreatic cancer, the presence of sarcopenia is associated with surgical complications. It is unknown if sarcopenia in patients with GEP-NETs is a risk factor for surgical complications. Methods: A multicentre retrospective study was performed in patients with a recently diagnosed GEP-NET and surgery to the primary tumour. CT scans were analysed for body composition analyses to assess for the presence of sarcopenia. Data regarding surgical procedures and complications were collected. Any major surgical complication was considered as Clavien–Dindo score ≥ 3. Results: This study included 180 patients, with 83 being male (46%) with a median age of 62 years (IQR 54–69). Most patients (n = 138, 77%) had a small intestinal NET, while 36 patients (20%) had pancreatic NETs. Sarcopenia was present in 109 patients (61%). In 43 patients (24%), surgical complications were recorded, and 21 complications (49%) were considered as major. Any type of surgical complication was not statistically different between patients without sarcopenia (n = 17, 24%) and with sarcopenia (n = 26, 24%)—a p-value of 0.36. This was the same for major complications; between patients without sarcopenia (n = 5, 24%) and with sarcopenia (n = 16, 76%)—a p-value of 0.18. Conclusions: Sarcopenia is highly prevalent in patients with a recently diagnosed GEP-NET, but this is not associated with major surgical complications. Future studies should include pathophysiological mechanisms that could be used to identify the causes of sarcopenia, its effect on quality of life and other oncological outcomes. Abstract

Metallic tin (Sn) was grown on three metallic substrates Ag(111), Ag(001) and W(110) both at room temperature (RT) and high temperature (HT) (473 K for Ag and 673 K for W). The surface structure of the grown films was studied using low energy electron diffraction (LEED). (3 × 3) R300 LEED pattern was observed for Sn growth on Ag(111) not only for 1/3 monolayer (ML) but also for the highest coverage studied for both grown temperatures with only more sharp LEED spots appeared at HT. 1 ML Sn was equally distributed in three substrate Ag layer where each Sn atoms replace every third Ag atoms forming bulk Sn-Ag layer having same surface structure. Sn on Ag(001) formed mainly p(2×2) and c(2×2) LEEDfor submonolayer coverage for both RT and HT growth and finally formed a pseudomorphic layer for 1 ML coverage evident from p(1×1) type pattern. For higher coverage it also formed bulk alloy but with a segregated Ag layer on top confirmed by p(1×1) along with a c(2×2) LEED pattern. Only in the case of Sn growth on W(110) no alloy formation was noticed for either submonolayer or few ML coverage at both temperatures. Mainly a stable (1×4) type surface structure was formed by overlayer Sn for higher coverage as it occupied the different energetically available positions on the W(110) surface.
