The reason for failure in learning and academic failure is the lack of academic skills. Mentally retarded children, as a special and vulnerable group of society, usually have little academic skills for various reasons. One of the important reasons can be executive functions. The present research was conducted with the aim of investigating the role of executive functions in predicting the mathematical academic skills of mentally retarded elementary students. The descriptive research method was correlation type. The statistical population was all 995 mentally retarded students of the elementary level in the academic year 1402-1401 in Kerman city; Based on the Morgan-Karjesi table, the statistical sample size of this research was 278 people; which were selected by stratified random sampling method. Brief executive function questionnaire and math teacher-made test were used to collect data. Data analysis was done with spss25 and Amos24 software. The results of the research showed that the model of the role of executive functions in predicting math academic skills in mentally retarded primary school students has an acceptable fit by controlling the effect of intelligence and age. There was a significant relationship between inhibition, attention transfer, emotional control, initiation, working memory, planning, organization of materials and revision with mathematical academic skills of intellectually disabled students, so that the components of executive functions simultaneously accounted for 0.357 of skill variance. The academic skills of intellectually disabled students were explained and the most important predictors of mathematical academic skills in intellectually disabled students were planning and working memory respectively

This service program is motivated by the lack of confidence in communicating retarded students in SLB C Autis Negeri Tuban. The lack of confidence in communication is caused by the lack of mastery and understanding of vocabulary. Therefore, by using a semiotic integrated learning design with pop-up book media it is hoped that it will increase the confidence of mentally retarded students, especially in communicating with others. This dedication program is carried out in the form of classroom action research involving 10 mild retarded students (C) and 5 moderate retarded students (C1). The team applies semiotic integrated learning with pop-up book media for six meetings. The results of this program indicate that there is an increase in confidence in mild and moderate retarded students at SLB C Autis Negeri Tuban. Confidence occurs through various processes, namely 1) self-performance, self-activity activities carried out in the learning process are the courage to appear in front of the class, tell stories, and answer questions. 2) there is a process of interaction and communication in learning activities between educators and students and fellow friends when the self-activity takes place. Thus, it can be concluded that through semiotic integrated learning with pop up book media can increase the confidence in communication retarded students.

Introduction: A belief that still endures is that the position of the moon and the phases cause certain physiological, psychological, and behavioral changes in humans and animals. The tidal changes in oceans are due to the gravitational force that is induced on earth by the moon. The full moon (FM) and new moon (NM) can beget social tension, mood swings, and disharmony in humans. There are incidences of increased road accidents, crime, and suicides on lunar cycles. The study states the behavioral changes in special children that include mentally ill, mentally retarded, and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) persons. The study also indicates the management methods and medication to be followed during lunar cycles. Aim and Objective: This study aims to study the behavioral changes in mentally ill, mentally retarded, and ASD person in lunar cycles and their management techniques. Materials and Methods: The study is conducted in a population of 40 between the age group of 15 and 45 years that is divided into Samples I and II. Sample I population is the person who are treated at home and Sample II population is an inclusive of person treated in an institute. The study is conducted for a period of 2 months that comprises 2 days of FM and 2 days of NM. Fifteen queries were inquired, which are parted into A, B, and C and the observation is presented in bar graph representation. Results and Conclusion: The study explores the changes in Sample I who does not undertake medication while Sample II experiences a trivial behavioral change in their behavior. This minor change is due to the effect of medication that is specified, and hence, not much changes are observed in Sample II when compared with Sample I. These changes can be overcome by the management techniques that include the recreational activities, medical facilities, counseling facilities, and vocational training courses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Less attention has been paid to the electromyographic activity of the lower extremity muscles, which is considered as an essential part of the kinetic studies on the gait of mentally retarded individuals. Hence, the study aims at determining the surface electromyography characteristics of the lower extremity muscles of mentally retarded adolescents during walking. Methods: It is a causal-comparative study. Fifteen mentally retarded and 15 normal adolescents with an age range of 10 to 14 years participated in this study. To record the activities of vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, biceps femoris, semi-tendinosus, tibialis anterior, long peroneal, medial gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles, sEMG was employed during the stance phase of gait. For the data analysis, an independent sample t-test was conducted using SPSS version 18. Results: The results revealed that the mentally retarded adolescents had higher level of biceps femoris muscle activity in the heel contact sub-phase (P=0.016) compared to the normal group. Also, the vastus medialis (P=0.015) and the long peroneal (P=0.026) muscles showed higher EMG activity. Furthermore, their vastus lateralis (P=0.039) and Soleus (P=0.002), and vastus medialis (P=0.045) muscles demonstrated higher and lower activities, respectively. The co-contraction rate of medial gastrocnemius and anterior tibialis muscles during the heel contact was higher (P=0.040) in individuals with mental retardation compared to the healthy group. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the mentally retarded individuals use different muscle activation patterns in comparison to healthy people. As a result, special attention should be given to the functioning of their lower extremity muscles during the corrective power exercises.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of focus of attention on learning dart throwing in mentally retarded children. In this quasi-experimental study, 22 mentally retarded boys (age 10-12 years old) were randomly selected according to IQ (50-70) and were assigned to two homogenous attention (internal, external) groups after the pretest and a training session according to the obtained scores, age and IQ. The subjects practiced in 5 blocks and each block 8 throws. Two-way analysis of variance with repeated measures and ANOVA were used to analyze data. In retention phase, both groups increased accuracy in their throwing (P=0.044). Variability (P=0.044) and throwing accuracy (P=0.047) decreased due to the training. In transfer phase, internal focus group could not transfer skill to new conditions while variable group succeeded to transfer their skill to new conditions. Also, external focus group had lower variability (P=0.049) and higher accuracy (P=0.048) than internal focus group. According to the findings, external focus group was able to retain and transfer skills to new situations which confirmed constrained action hypothesis (Wulf et al., 2001) in mentally retarded individuals.

Mentally retarded children or also called children with intellectual disability are children with below average intelligence who experience obstacles in adaptive behavior in the form of taking care of themselves and carrying out activities of daily living. Children with intellectual disability need special education and services to help them achieve optimal development. Children with mild intellectual disability require three basic skills, such as reading, speaking and arithmetic. The implementation of learning in the classroom, especially in learning mathematics requires learning modifications, so that they are in accordance with the individual conditions of intellectual disability students. Intellectual disability students have obstacles to think about something abstract, so in the preparation of learning programs the teacher is expected to; (1) understanding the characteristics of mild intellectual disability students, (2) conducting assessments, (3) being creative in modifying learning methods.

We read with a great interest the article written by Davoodbeglou and colleagues entitled “Evaluation of Hepatitis B Infection Prevalence in Institutionalized Intellectually Disabled Children” which is recently published in your prestigious journal1. The authors concluded that HBV infection is more prevalent among institutionalized disabled children and that we should change our health policies for HBV infection management in this population. They have conducted a valuable study with an important subject in a high risk population for hepatitis. Despite our interest to the findings of Davoodbeglou et al. study there are some challenging points about their work; so we think that some comments may be of benefit. The first, authors have claimed a higher prevalence of HBV infection among vaccinated children in comparison with those with no or undetermined vaccination history. While there are studies in which the efficacy of neonatal HBV immunization has been proven2. How the authors justify this finding? In addition the authors have not mentioned the sampling method of their study which is the crucial factor of prevalence studies. This may seriously affect the results of study. Also the time period in which the study was conducted has not been determined by the authors. Was it after or before distribution of national vaccination program for hepatitis B? In this regard we should be aware of the maximum age of disabled individuals included in the study. In conclusion we appreciate the valuable effort of the authors; however we were wondering if we could kindly ask them to interpret better our concerns.

The purpose of education is the change anticipated in a person (or group of people) which is implemented by the use of specially planned educational actions, under the influence of activity. This justification becomes more sensitive when children with special educational needs, especially those with mental retardation find themselves in the new educational environment - in an inclusive school. This literature review paper aims to describe the issues of education in children with mental retardation in schools providing inclusive education. The study was conducted using literature on theoretical analytical methods. The results of the study showed the educational work for mentally retarded children in inclusive schools can be implemented if an optimal educational environment is created, training for educators is held and a strong educational system is created.

Mental retardation is an intellectual disability characterized by intelligence being below average. People who are mentally retarded can learn new abilities, but the pace of learning is very slow. There are problems that often occur in the detection that children have mental retardation, especially by parents due to the lack of knowledge of the parents about this, resulting in the mistake of choosing the right type of learning for children. If this is allowed to continue, it will result in the child's mental condition getting worse. Due to these problems, a solution is offered in the form of an expert system application with the Case Based Reasoning (CBR) method, this method will match the symptom data of the old disease with the symptom data consulted by the user so that the similarity number of each type of mental retardation will be produced. The final result of this study is the percentage value of similarity along with recommendations in the form of suggestions and solutions that will be carried out by parents in providing independent education to children with mental retardation. The results obtained were in the form of mental retardation with a percentage of 0%, disabled with a percentage of 82.35%, with disabilities with a percentage of 0%.

medicine ,Special needs ,Mentally retarded ,Negative attitude ,Social model of disability ,Psychology ,medicine.disease ,Social psychology ,Cerebral palsy - Abstract
Polumysna O. Defining the status “person with a disability” in UkraineThe article finds that the term “person with a disability” has constantly evolved, the attitude of society towards a person with a disability has been constantly changing. The nicknames that society assigned to this category of people, calling them lame, idiots, beggars, lunatics, social outsiders, the mentally retarded, the retarded, scarecrows for the healthy, samovars, etc. are considered. It was found that these names indicated only a person's disability or position in society and did not identify him as an ordinary person with his own needs and problems to be solved. In the twentieth century, only how able / incapable a person is came to the fore. At the end of the XX – beginning of the XXI century in many countries society began to pay attention not only to the medical indications of people with disabilities, but began to talk about the equality of these people in society, i.e. the implementation of the social model of disability. It is noted that the use of the words in-valid, dis-ability, mal-formation already fosters in society a negative attitude towards people with disabilities. It has been studied that the vast majority of researchers called people with disabilities “people with disabilities”, “people with special needs”, “people with disabilities”. In addition, there are sharper statements such as “abnormal student with disabilities”, “child with defects”, “special child”. After the law was passed in 2017, most scholars began using the term “person with a disability”. It was found that people with disabilities living in Ukraine ask not to be called autistic, cerebral palsy, downs, people with special needs, disabilities, and put a person first, and then his disability. There has been and in fact there is no consensus between society, scientists and people with disabilities themselves, as they are called, which indicates a certain imbalance and lack or one-sided communication in society.

This study aims at investigating the effectiveness of group sessions in improving the quality of life and family relationships in children with mental disability. The research procedure is experimental with pre-test and post-test design and control group. The statistical population in this study includes all families of mentally retarded boy and girl students studying in the exceptional schools in Ardabil. The studysampleis30 families selected via the convenient sampling method and randomly divided into experimental and control groups. For data gathering, the subjects are asked to complete the Quality of Life Questionnaire and Schaefer Family Assessment Device. The multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) is used to test the hypothesis. The results show that the group session has a significant effect on the quality of life and improves the family relationships in families with mentally retarded children (p≥ 0/01). Emphasizing enhancement of parents ‘awareness, free discussion on worries and learning ways of coping with children’s preoccupations and problem solving skills are effective in improving quality of life and family relationships. All the participants emphasized suggestibility, hostility and withdrawal in their children and insisted on controlling the parents fight over accusing and blaming one another. Researchers suggest that in order to improve parent-child relationship, it would be better if both parents participate in group sessions at the same time.

Background. The rights of residents in psycho-neurological boarding schools are not respected in most cases, in particular, such rights as those to the possibility of independent living, to one’s own family, to any job placement, general education and some skills, to the possibility of integration into society. The purpose of the article is the necessity to show the importance of community participation in empowering people with disabilities living in neuropsychiatric boarding schools by developing their motivation to develop their needs and the participation of volunteer students in this work for their training in working with this group. Material and methods: methods of theoretical analysis of psychological, pedagogical and medical literature, analysis of personal files and the results of activities of residents, longitudinal observation, methods of expert assessments to determine the level of activity, the method of "Sociogram". Results. Since we cannot significantly change IQ, a change in the motivational structure may turn out to be a decisive moment on which the success of social adaptation depends. Many researchers show that behavior is not based on cognitive abnormalities, but motivational factors. Conclusions: advances in medicine today can extend the active life of most mentally retarded people, increasing the number of those who need to acquire domestic and even professional skills.
