Abstract

The elevational patterns of plant and animal diversity have been extensively described in ecological theory. However, how soil-temperature gradients and spatial heterogeneity of the forest and its associated root, soil and litter properties affect the diversity of soil microbial communities remains unclear. We studied the effects of a soil-temperature gradient and spatial heterogeneity of forests on taxonomic and phylogenetic patterns of bacterial and fungal communities in plant roots, rhizosphere and bulk soil. Soil samples were collected in closed (tree islands) and open (gaps) forest at three altitudes in the French Alps (1400, 1700 and 2000 m). Samples were separated into three fractions: plant roots (at the community level, as roots were not sorted by species), rhizosphere and bulk soil. Bacterial (16S) and fungal (ITS) diversity was determined, along with soil aggregate stability, litter and root traits. Phylogenetic clustering processes were observed for bacterial but not for fungal communities. Forest spatial heterogeneity significantly influenced taxonomic and phylogenetic diversities and divergence (phylogenetic relatedness) for bacterial communities. The soil temperature gradient and forest spatial heterogeneity affected fungal phylogenetic divergence, even though no over-dispersion or clustering processes were found. Soil aggregate stability was a significant factor explaining the bacterial and fungal communities’ structure and was correlated with bacterial taxonomic diversity and fungal divergence. Bacterial communities’ composition was better explained by root traits than in fungal communities, particularly for rhizosphere and root communities. Our findings highlight the importance of root traits describing the taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity of bacterial communities. Conversely, fungal communities did not show clustering processes and the variance of their structure was not significantly explained by the root or litter traits measured. Additionally, our results highlight the importance of spatial heterogeneity of forests to study the soil biodiversity of forests

Abstract

Community level physiological profiles (CLPP) performed by the MicroResp method are reliable ecological indicators to assess soil microbial functional diversity. Functional diversity provides a great insight to microbial roles in ecosystems, and it is regulated among others, by soil physicochemical properties. The application of biochar or wood ash to forest soils is often employed to improve soil structure and soil hydraulic properties, increase soil organic matter stocks, neutralise acidity and restore nutrients. We hypothesized that addition of new carbon sources (biochar and wood ashes) may induce a change in the microbial functional diversity. Two experimental sites were established on acidic soils: one on a loamy soil (SOC% 3.9; pH: 4.8) and another on a sandy loam soil (SOC% 10.8; pH: 3.8). CLPP were performed using MicroResp system in surface (0-5 cm) soil samples. The carbon sources used were selected on the basis of their ecological relevance to the soil microbial community. CLLP data of each experimental site was ordinated by principal component analysis. The first two ordination axes (explaining more than 70% of the variance) were selected and their relation with soil hydraulic and nutritional properties, soil structure and microbial biomass carbon was analysed. The major findings of this study may be summarised as follows: a) In the short term, a shift in the microbial substrate use profile for wood ash and biochar additions was not observed, b) the soil microbial community responded most strongly to the addition of carboxylic acids and carbohydrates in both experimental sites, and c) in the loamy soil the first axis of the PCA was related with pH and the second one to the mean weight diameter of soil aggregates, and in the sandy-loam site, the first axis was related to the available water content and the second one to the mean pore diameter

Abstract

The ecological restoration of degraded and constructed environments has usually aimed at reducing onsite (e.g. decline of soil quality) and off-site effects (e.g. contamination of water downstream) and to avoid irreversible situations were ecological succession is arrested. However, with the recent rise of ecosystem service theory and the attempts to quantify these services, there has been a change in the paradigm of restoration ecology in recent years. Restoration ecology can now benefit from the ecosystem services framework and aim to incorporate the maximization of these ecosystem services into projects. Here, we aimed to study the ecosystem services related to soil processes provided by 12 different species regularly used for restoration in the south of France. We studied the soil characteristics and root traits of these 12 species. Each species was grown from seed in a monoculture in 72 inclined steel boxes (0.7 x 0.7 x 0.3 m) and every monoculture was replicated six times with additional six control (bare soil) boxes. Three replicate boxes were used for soil and root sampling and three were equipped with rhizotrons (PVC windows to observe root growth). Every 4 months, root physical properties were assessed and aggregate stability tests were performed. Additionally, rainfall simulations were performed at two vegetation stages (seedling and mature) and before and after cutting the aerial biomass (to disentangle the effects of above- and belowground biomass and to relate results to root traits). Runoff and sediments were also collected after each natural rainfall event. Results showed that species from the Fabaceae family were more efficient at controlling erosion and increasing infiltration rates compared to members of the Poaceae family. However, no significant effect of species or family was found regarding soil aggregate stability during the study period. Our results suggest that erosion and infiltration processes are influenced by plant biomass and traits in the short term, whilst the development of soil aggregate stability is a longer-term process. Therefore, we suggest that herbaceous species of the Fabaceae family have a major potential for rapidlyimproving soil structure on road embankments compared to Poaceae family. A longer-term experiment is now being performed to study the effects of vegetation on soil aggregate stability

Subsoils are C-depleted compared to topsoils, and are now seen as a potential C sink, but C dynamics and processes in subsoils are still largely unexplored. During quarry excavation, or the construction of infrastructures (e.g. roads and railways), subsoils are often moved to the surface and then vegetated. This is the case, for example, of road embankments or quarries that undergo a process of land restoration via re-vegetation. Therefore, it is important to understand how the use of subsoil influences C cycling. Subsoils differ from topsoils with regard to key factors that can influence C cycling, such as fertility, soil weathering levels, microbiological diversity/activity and C saturation levels. These factors will influence how soils sequester C, as well as how it is consumed and released in the atmosphere through respired CO2. With regard to soil respiration, the use of subsoil could induce a strong priming effect, since the input of fresh organic matter will boost the microbiological activity of the soil and possibly increase the degradation and consumption of pre-existent C. This aspect of vegetating excavated subsoil and the comparison with topsoil has rarely been studied. Therefore, we have carried out an experiment at the Ecotron (http://www.ecotron.cnrs.fr/) microcosm facilities using isotope labeling techniques. Three continuously labeled chambers with 13C enriched CO2 were used to grow two plant species: Medicago sativa and Plantago lanceolata, both of which are routinely planted on road embankments. The two species were grown in pots with two soil horizons: i) organic topsoil and ii) mineral subsoil. Bare soil was used as a control. The soils originated from the same clay soil profile in Pisciotta (Italy), and were taken at different depths: 0-30 cm for topsoil and 120-150 cm for subsoil. Labeled air was continuously infused in the growth chambers for 6 months. Every two weeks, soil respiration was measured and analyses were run for CO2 concentration and 13C abundance. The results revealed lower respiration rates in vegetated subsoil compared to topsoil. The priming effect of vegetated subsoil was present, but it was surprisingly low compared to that observed in the topsoil. In addition, the 13C signal was lower for the subsoil, suggesting a higher share of previously stored C utilized by microorganisms. This effect might be due to differences in microbiological communities that can be found in the soil layers. Future work will be focused on analyzing the C stored in soil and the evolution of the microbiological community in the two soils.

Abstract

Demand for restoration of resilient, self-sustaining, and biodiverse natural ecosystems as a conservation measure is increasing globally; however, restoration efforts frequently fail to meet standards appropriate for this objective. Achieving these standards requires management underpinned by input from diverse scientific disciplines including ecology, biotechnology, engineering, soil science, ecophysiology, and genetics. Despite increasing restoration research activity, a gap between the immediate needs of restoration practitioners and the outputs of restoration science often limits the effectiveness of restoration programs. Regrettably, studies often fail to identify the practical issues most critical for restoration success. We propose that part of this oversight may result from the absence of a considered statement of the necessary practical restoration science questions. Here we develop a comprehensive framework of the research required to bridge this gap and guide effective restoration. We structure questions in five themes: (1) setting targets and planning for success, (2) sourcing biological material, (3) optimizing establishment, (4) facilitating growth and survival, and (5) restoring resilience, sustainability, and landscape integration. This framework will assist restoration practitioners and scientists to identify knowledge gaps and develop strategic research focused on applied outcomes. The breadth of questions highlights the importance of cross-discipline collaboration among restoration scientists, and while the program is broad, successful restoration projects have typically invested in many or most of these themes. Achieving restoration ecology's goal of averting biodiversity losses is a vast challenge: investment in appropriate science is urgently needed for ecological restoration to fulfill its potential and meet demand as a conservation tool.

Abstract

Soil aggregate stability (i.e. the ability of soil aggregates to resist breakdown under disruptive forces) is crucial for the functioning of several ecosystem processes such as infiltration, carbon storage, nutrient cycling, resistance to erosion and ecosystem services related to these processes. In recent years, many studies have highlighted the importance of roots and soil microbial communities on soil aggregate formation and stabilization. Here we present the results of two complementary studies to understand linkages between soil biodiversity and soil aggregate stability: 1) a field study to understand how soil microbial diversity patterns are related to soil aggregate stability and 2) a mesocosm inoculation experiment to understand if soil microbial composition mediates the effects of roots and land use on soil aggregate stability. Study sites are natural forest, agroforest, arable and pasture fields in subalpine, temperate and Mediterranean regions in the UK and France. Aggregate stability was studied using the standard method ISO/CD 10930 and microbial diversity was assessed using Next Generation Sequencing. In the mesocosm inoculation experiment reciprocal inoculations of microbial communities crossed with root systems were compared to identify their influence on the aggregation properties. Results showed the existence of correlation between soil diversity patters and soil aggregate stability at different field sites. More interestingly, the mesocosm study showed that there is a direct effect of microbial inoculations on the stability of soil aggregates. This study provides valuable insights in the current emerging challenge of linking detected communities and their associated changes to relevant soil services, thereby providing new information to land managers on more sustainable forms of land management to optimise ecosystem services delivery, in this particular case, to services related to soil aggregate stability

Abstract

Vegetation has been widely used on geotechnical engineering structures (e.g., embankments) associated with infrastructures and industrial sites (e.g., terrestrial transport, quarries, mines and urban spaces), as an effective tool against soil erosion and shallow landslides hazards. Besides such a protective role, sustainable vegetation management on these engineering structures is increasingly desired for favoring multiple ecosystem services, such as enhancing aesthetic value, promoting public safety, biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation via carbon sequestration. In this context, Valorhiz (URL: http://valorhiz.com/fr) developed an innovative solution (TalVeg®) that comprises a Decision Support System (DSS). This DSS allows designing and optimizing multi-functional ecosystems considering managers and customers’ requirements (considering e.g., maintenance costs, biodiversity and/or ecosystem services enhancement). The DSS acts at the bio-technosol scale and aids towards the selection of plant species and associated microorganisms. For these purposes, TalVeg® innovation is composed of three technological components: - Databases of plant, soil and symbiotic micro-organisms - Mathematical models that simulate plant and water dynamics within soil according to climate scenari - Computation of biodiversity and ecosystem functions Methods VALORHIZ started to implement, in 2015, several pilot sites in railways, highways, quarries and ski slope contexts. Several experimental modalities (with contrasted seed mixes and microorganism inocula) were set up on these sites to test the effect of TalVeg® components on vegetation success (rapid and perennial development of a dense plant cover) and soil functions (soil structural stability, soil shrinkage and water retention curves). Results & Discussion The dynamics of plant communities, soil function and biodiversity and their interactions, will be monitored at all sites for over 3 years. The preliminary results (after 6 months) will be presented with an overview of how doing best to manage novel ecosystems with regard to soil erosion mitigation and slope stability maintenance. Potential pathways of incorporating multi-functionality to the dominant function of natural hazard mitigation will also be discussed. This study enables us to gain a better understanding of soil-vegetation interactions in a context of ecological engineering, open new perspectives with regard to the management of degraded ecosystems, and enhance multiple ecosystem services

Abstract

Plant production and vegetation dynamics in drylands are shaped by landform patterns, and largely depends on favorable surface redistribution of runoff and sediments. Similarly, the organization of vegetation in these systems controls runoff generation and erosion, and strongly influences the spatial redistribution of water and soil resources. Landform-water-vegetation feedbacks may have, therefore, a key role determining the stability and restoration potential of arid and semiarid ecosystems. We present a synthesis of field, remotely-sensed and modelling studies on landform-soil-vegetation patterns in semiarid rangelands of Australia and reclaimed coal-mining slopes of Mediterranean-dry Spain. Our results indicate that the organization and stability of vegetation patterns strongly depends on feedbacks with coevolving landforms. Exploration of banded woodlands in central Australia reveals that disturbances (e.g. grazing, wildfires) can impact landform-water-vegetation feedbacks, altering the way water is spatially redistributed and used by vegetation, which results in non-linear reductions of ecosystem function. Successful experiences on the restoration of these systems suggest that the spatial management of runoff and sediments is decisive to rehabilitate vegetation patchiness and landscape function. The study of vegetation-water-landform feedbacks in Mediterranean-dry reclaimed mining slopes of Spain offers additional indications on the restoration of drylands, particularly on the effects of rill and gully erosion on the stability of restored vegetation. The development of rill and gully networks provides very efficient drainage networks for the routing of runoff and sediments that drastically reduce the availability of water and soil resources for plant production, ultimately causing degradation of vegetation and restoration failure.
