Abstract

The isle of Gavdos, and its wider area, is one of the few places worldwide where the calibration and validation of altimetric satellites has been carried out during the last, more than, two decades using dedicated techniques at sea and on land. The sea-surface calibration employed for the determination of the bias in the satellite altimeter's sea-surface height relies on the use of a gravimetric geoid in collocation with data from tide gauges, permanent global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers, as well as meteorological and oceanographic sensors. Hence, a high-accuracy and high-resolution gravimetric geoid model in the vicinity of Gavdos and its surrounding area is of vital importance. The existence of such a geoid model resides in the availability of reliable, in terms of accuracy, and dense, in terms of spatial resolution, gravity data. The isle of Gavdos presents varying topographic characteristics with heights larger than 400 m within small spatial distances of ~7 km. The small size of the island and the significant bathymetric variations in its surrounding marine regions make the determination of the gravity field and the geoid a challenging task. Given the above, the objective of the present work was two-fold. First, to collect new land gravity data over the isle of Gavdos in order to complete the existing database and cover parts of the island where voids existed. Relative gravity campaigns have been designed to cover as homogenously as possible the entire island of Gavdos and especially areas where the topographic gradient is large. The second focus was on the determination of a high-resolution, 1 ′ × 1 ′ , and high-accuracy gravimetric geoid for the wider Gavdos area, which will support activities on the determination of the absolute altimetric bias. The relative gravity campaigns have been designed and carried out employing a CG5 relative gravity meter along with geodetic grade GNSS receivers to determine the geodetic position of the acquired observations. Geoid determination has been based on the newly acquired and historical gravity data, GNSS/Leveling observations, and topography and bathymetry databases for the region. The modeling was based on the well-known remove–compute–restore (RCR) method, employing least-squares collocation (LSC) and fast Fourier transform (FFT) methods for the evaluation of the Stokes' integral. Modeling of the long wavelength contribution has been based on EIGEN6c4 and XGM2019e global geopotential models (GGMs), while for the contribution of the topography, the residual terrain model correction has been employed using both the classical, space domain, and spectral approaches. From the results achieved, the final geoid model accuracy reached the ±1–3 cm level, while in terms of the absolute differences to the GNSS/Leveling data per baseline length, 28.4% of the differences were below the 1 c m S i j   [ k m ] level and 55.2% below the 2 c m S i j   [ k m ] . The latter improved drastically to 52.8% and 81.1%, respectively, after deterministic fit to GNSS/Leveling data, while in terms of the relative differences, the final geoid reaches relative uncertainties of 11.58 ppm (±1.2 cm) for baselines as short as 0–10 km, which improves to 10.63 ppm (±1.1 cm) after the fit. 28. A new isotropic covariance function on the sphere based on a self-convolving spherical cap

Abstract

Modeling the stochastic behavior of global-scale geophysical signals, such as the Earth’s external gravity field, requires the use of valid (i.e., positive-definite) covariance functions on the sphere. The construction of such functions is still a challenging task, especially when a compactly-supported (i.e., finite) covariance function is needed. A standard approach for deriving a positive definite function is by convolving any function with itself. Accounting for the convolution-multiplication duality, the spectrum of the resulting function is always positive, since it is equal to the multiplication of the spectrum of the self-convolving function with itself. The validity of the resulting function can therefore be easily established. In this study, we utilize this property and develop a new compactly-supported covariance function on the sphere based on the self-convolution of a spherical cap. The shape of this new covariance function resembles other models developed using the self-convolution property. Two representative examples are the spherical covariance function, which is based on the self-convolution of a two-dimensional ball, and the more generalized “Euclid’s hat” function, which is described by the self-convolution of an n-dimensional ball. Although the spatial representation of our newly-developed covariance function is given by a somewhat involved mathematical expression, its spectral representation is rather simple and only requires the calculation of spherical harmonic coefficients of a spherical cap. 29. Distribution, duration and size of slow-slip events in the eastern Mediterranean: Insights from the Hellenic subduction system

Abstract

Slow-slip events (SSEs), although widely recorded in various convergent margins globally, only recently have been reported in the Eastern Mediterranean, with one of them triggering the 2018 ~M7 Zakynthos Earthquake along the western Hellenic Subduction System (HSS). Here, we explore the distribution, size and duration of SSEs along the HSS and assess their importance in subduction-related strain accumulation and release. To achieve this, we analyse geodetic timeseries from a dense network of permanent GNSS stations on Western Peloponnese, Crete and surrounding islands that collectively span a time-period of ~10 years. We use greedy linear regression techniques to estimate displacement trajectory models for each station and thus we identify transient displacement signals, associated with aseismic processes at depth. To further constrain the spatial extent and size of the SSEs we invert the GNSS transient displacements for variable distributed slip at depth and we, therefore, discuss likely scenarios of aseismic and seismic strain distribution (and partitioning) within the HSS’s complex plate-interface zone., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

30. Isotropic windows and filters on the sphere

Abstract

The study of geophysical data on global scale requires the modification of conventional spectral analysis and signal processing techniques from the real line to the sphere. These techniques often depend on the use of window functions (e.g., to improve the detection of periodic constituents and to suppress ripple effects in the impulse response of digital filters). Normalized window functions are also utilized as averaging filters. In this work, we present a comprehensive list of window functions for the analysis of signals defined on a spherical surface. We focus on classic tapering windows that are systematically used in signal processing applications, such as the Bartlett, Welch, generalized cosine, Bartlett-Hann and Tukey windows. The approach followed for their adaptation to the sphere results in isotropic (i.e., rotationally symmetric) window functions. We also examine their related filter kernels and provide expressions for their representation in the spatial and spectral domains. The spectral representation corresponds to a set of spherical harmonic coefficients, the calculation of which is entirely based on recurrence relations. We utilize these newly-developed relations to evaluate the spectrum of all filter kernels and compare their main characteristics, such as the main lobe width, first side lobe level and side lobe decay rate. Abstract

A microwave range transponder has been operating at the CDN1 Cal/Val site on the mountains of Crete for about 6 years to calibrate international satellite radar altimeters at the Ku-band. This CDN1 transponder is part of the European Space Agency Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration (PFAC), and has been producing continuously as of 2015 a time series of range biases for Sentinel-3A, Sentinel-3B, Sentinel-6A, Jason-2, Jason-3 and CryoSat-2. A second range and sigma-0 transponder at a crossover location of Sentinel-6 “Michael Freilich” on the island of Gavdos is also operational as of 11-Oct-2021. This work presents a thorough examination of the transponder Cal/Val responses in an effort to understand and determine which factors are responsible for the observed changes in the Cal/Val results. Fourteen uncontrolled and three controlled sources of variations have been investigated. The latest calibration results for the Jason-3, the Copernicus Sentinel-3A and -3B, Sentinel-6A and the HY-2B radar altimeters will be described based on four sea-surface and two transponder Cal/Val sites of the PFAC in west Crete, Greece. Absolute biases for Jason-3, Sentinel-6A, Sentinel-3A, Sentinel-3B and HY-2B will be given using various techniques, infrastructure and settings.

39. Absolute and relative calibration of HY-2B satellite altimeter using the permanent Cal/Val infrastructure in Crete

Abstract

The HaiYang-2B (HY-2B) altimeter satellite has been launched by the Chinese National Satellite Ocean Application Service (NSOAS) on 24 October 2018, to monitor the marine dynamic environment. In this work, HY-2B observations have been assessed by the Permanent Facility for Altimetry Calibration in Crete, Greece and in the context of the Dragon research initiative of ESA. This action supports Earth observation research activities between European and Chinese institutes. At first, a preliminary analysis of the HY-2B Geophysical Data Records revealed minor inconsistencies between the 1-Hz and 20-Hz products, as in the Net Instrument Correction and the Ku-band range. These have been reported to and immediately corrected by NSOAS, resulting in a consistent release of the HY-2B data. Two years of altimetric observations of HY-2B have been calibrated using two sea-surface Cal/Val sites in Crete. Results will be given for two Cal/Val sites: the CRS1 site in the south west tip of Crete, where the descending Pass No. 66 is calibrated, and the RDK1 site in the central south Crete used for the calibration of its ascending pass No. 161. In addition, relative calibration of HY-2B has also been carried out around Crete with reference to Jason-3, Sentinel-3A and Sentinel-3B. Finally, an assessment of the HY-2B’s microwave radiometer has been performed by comparing radiometric tropospheric delays with tropospheric delays derived by the ECMWF model and the permanent GNSS stations in Crete.
