Short extract from the Introduction:Nomads, …being a nomad, …living as a nomad, … This word, these expressions, suggest a sense of freedom; they evoke limitless space and are a source of special inspiration, even fascination, for many artists, writers, travellers and for humanities researchers. Thanks to ethnologists, sociologists, geographers, historians and archaeologists, nomadic life, with its organisation, its constraints, its social implications, has become a fully-fledged research field. This way of life prevailed for the first million years of human societies before another lifestyle, the sedentary one, gradually took over several thousand years ago. And yet, nomads have not disappeared. Today, although they are a minority and often marginalised, they remain an integral component of our humankind. That is the point of view that we have adopted in Nomad Lives, to restore a face, a history to these nomads, instead of only seeing them as the subject of studies. For this human dimension, which is or should be central to the humanities, is too often dissolved in technical analyses or epistemological debates, with us prehistorians. So we invite our readers to discover women, men and children from all backgrounds – geographic, climatic, sociological and even chronological – but all united by a nomadic way of life. This work is divided into five thematic chapters:1.Nomads and nomadism.2.Practical life in the camp: material productions and dwellings.3.Practical life outside the camp: territories and economic organisation.4.Social life and relationships with the living: within and outside the group.5.Divine life and relationships with the dead: myths, rites and beliefs. The entire work comprises thirty contributions from ethnologists, sociologists, pre- and protohistory archaeologists, geographers and economists, which represent as many case studies of past and present nomadic peoples. They are approached from various perspectives (material culture, oral sources, historical archives, etc.), and relate to various geographical areas – Africa, North and South America, Eurasia and the Middle East –, on various time scales, from thousands of years of Prehistory, to the “short time-frame” of ethnographic or sociological surveys. These contributions document various types and spheres of activity of nomadic life, explore its plural aspect and do not delve deeper into the hypothesis of inherent anthropological “universals” . In fact, the aim was not to focus on issues raised by the definition of nomadism. Others have been working on that for a long time (among the most recent titles, cf. for instance Stepanoff et al. 2013). However, we deliberately drew attention to these questions, which are implicitly addressed in some articles and discussed in the conclusion, in turn by an ethnologist, an archaeologist and a sociologist., Court extrait de l'Introduction :"Nomade, ...être nomade, ...vivre en nomade, ... Grâce aux ethnologues, sociologues, géographes, historien.nes et archéologues, la vie nomade, avec son organisation, ses contraintes, ses implications sociétales, est devenue un champ de recherche à part entière. Cette vie a prévalu pendant les premiers millions d'années d'existence des sociétés humaines avant qu'un autre mode de vie, sédentaire, ne s’y substitue progressivement il y a quelques millénaires. Pour autant, les nomades n'ont pas disparu. Aujourd’hui minoritaires et fréquemment marginalisés, ils demeurent une composante à part entière de notre humanité. C'est ce point de vue que nous avons adopté dans Vies de Nomades, pour leur restituer un visage, une histoire, au lieu d’y voir seulement un sujet d'étude. Car cette dimension humaine, qui est ou devrait être centrale dans les sciences humaines, se dissout trop souvent dans des analyses techniques ou des débats épistémologiques, chez les préhistoriens et préhistoriennes que nous sommes. C'est donc à la découverte de femmes, d'hommes et d'enfants de tous les horizons – géographiques, climatiques, sociologiques et même chronologiques –, mais tous unis par leur mode de vie nomade, que nous invitons nos lecteurs. L’ouvrage est distribué en cinq chapitres thématiques :1. Des nomades et des nomadismes.2. La vie pratique au campement : productions matérielles et habitations.3. La vie pratique hors du campement : territoires et organisation économique.4. La vie sociale et la relation aux vivants : dans et hors du groupe. 5. La vie divinisée et la relation aux morts : mythes, rites et croyances. L’ensemble rassemble trente contributions d’ethnologues, de sociologues, d’archéologues des périodes pré- et protohistoriques, de géographes et d'économistes, qui sont autant d’études de cas de peuples nomades, passés et actuels. Traitées selon différents angles d’approche (culture matérielle, sources orales, archives historiques, etc.), elles concernent différentes aires géographiques– l'Afrique, l'Amérique du Nord et du Sud, l’Eurasie et le Moyen-Orient –, à différentes échelles de temps, de la chronologie plurimillénaire de la Préhistoire au « temps court » de l’enquête ethnographique ou sociologique. (.....)"Ces contributions documentent les modes variés de la vie nomade et ses diverses sphères d'activités, en explorant son caractère pluriel et sans creuser l’hypothèse d’« universaux » anthropologiques qui lui seraient inhérents. De fait, il n’était pas question d’axer l'ouvrage autour des questions que soulève la définition du nomadisme. D'autres s’y sont attelés de longue date (parmi les titres les plus récents, cf. par exemple Stepanoff et al. 2013). Pour autant, nous avons volontairement attiré l'attention sur ces questions, abordées en filigrane dans certains articles et discutées en conclusion tour à tour par un ethnologue (Serge Bahuchet), un archéologue (Jean-Paul Demoule) et une sociologue (Sylvie Mazzella). C'est donc sur un dialogue interdisciplinaire engagé par la question : « qu’est-ce qu’être nomade selon vous ? (selon votre discipline) » que se referme le tour d'horizon des Vies de Nomades. (.....)
