1. Neutrino masses and mixing from hierarchy and symmetry

Abstract

We construct a model that allows us to determine the three neutrino masses and the mass matrix directly from the experimental mass squared differences delta atm and delta sol, using the assumptions of rational hierarchy (m1/m2 = m2/m3) and of S3-S2 symmetry for the mixing matrix. We find that both the mass ratios and mixing angles are dominated by the same parameter. For the mixing angles, this parameter=sq rt (1/6)=0.41, is a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient. For the masses, the mass ratios depend on the experimental mass squared differences and with most recent data, remarkably, we obtain sq rt (m1/m2)=sq rt (m2/m3)=0.41. This possibly coincidental equality gives a simple mass matrix. We obtain the masses m1,m2 and m3. 2. A Model of Neutrino Masses and Mixing from Hierarchy and Symmetry

Abstract

We construct a model that allows us to determine the three neutrino masses directly from the experimental mass squared differences, $\Delta_{\rm atm}$ and $\Delta_{\rm sol}$, together with the assumption that $\Lambda = \surd (1/6) = \surd (m_2/m_3)$. The parameter, $\Lambda$, basically a Clebsch-Gordan coefficient with the value of about 0.4 stems from the group $S_3$, and is NOT an expansion parameter, in contrast with the Wolfenstein parameter, $0.22 <\lambda < 0.25$ needed to explain quark masses. For a variety of initial values of $\Delta_{\rm atm}$, we find that the lowest mass, $m_1$, varies from $1.4 - 3.6 10^{-3} eV$, the next lowest mass, $m_2$ varies only slightly from $8.4 - 9.0 10^{-3} eV$, and the heaviest mass, $m_3$, ranges from $5.0 - 5.4 10^{-2} eV$. The elements of the mixing matrix, $U$, and of the mass matrix, $M$, are examined with particular emphasis on the role of small angle $\theta_{13}$. The phase, $\delta$, of the mixing matrix $U$ has a serious effect in the mass matrix only for the matrix elements $M_{e\mu}$ and $M_{e\tau}$, because these are the only ones for which the real part vanishes in the allowed range for $\theta_{13}$. Their dependence on $s_{13}$ for various values of $\delta$ is given explicitly. We study the elements of the mass matrix, $M$, for our solution 1, that of the perfect rational hierarchy, for the case $\delta = 0$, and find that all of them are smaller than $0.03 eV$. Abstract

We build a model to describe neutrinos based on strict hierarchy, incorporating as much as possible, the latest known data, for $\Delta_{sol}$ and $\Delta_{atm}$, and for the mixing angles determined from neutrino oscillation experiments, including that from KamLAND. Since the hierarchy assumption is a statement about mass ratios, it lets us obtain all three neutrino masses. We obtain a mass matrix, $M_\nu$ and a mixing matrix, $U$, where both $M_\nu$ and $U$ are given in terms of powers of $\Lambda$, the analog of the Cabibbo angle $\lambda$ in the Wolfenstein representation, and two parameters, $\rho$ and $\kappa$, each of order one. The expansion parameter, $\Lambda$, is defined by $\Lambda^2 = m_2/m_3 = \surd (\Delta_{sol}/\Delta_{atm}) \approx$ 0.16, and $\rho$ expresses our ignorance of the lightest neutrino mass $m_1, (m_1 = \rho \Lambda^4 m_3$), while $\kappa$ scales $s_{13}$ to the experimental upper limit, $s_{13} = \kappa \Lambda^2 \approx 0.16 \kappa$. These matrices are similar in structure to those for the quark and lepton families, but with $\Lambda$ about 1.6 times larger than the $\lambda$ for the quarks and charged leptons. The upper limit for the effective neutrino mass in double $\beta$-decay experiments is $4 \times 10^{-3} eV$ if $s_{13} = 0$ and $6 \times 10^{-3} eV$ if $s_{13}$ is maximal. Abstract

Barbieri and Hall have argued that threshold effects at the scale of grand-unification wipe out predictions on the SUSY scale, M_S. Using triviality arguments we give upper bounds on ultraheavy particles, while proton stability gives lower bounds on the mass of the higgs color-triplet. We find no useful lower bound on the $\Sigma$ supermultiplet, but if the strong coupling constant is as large as recent experiments suggest, unification in the minimal SUSY SU(5) model requires that the $Sigma$ masses be $\sim 10^{-7}M_V$ and that the color octet and weak triplet be split in mass by a factor of $\sim$100., Comment: 6 pages (revised)

Abstract

Recent experiments at SPEAR indicate an unexpectedly large number of 1 - states in the energy range 3.9-4.4 GeV. We show how the existence of exotic cq̄c̄q mesons can account for these states as well as the rise in R and the missing ψ(3.7) decays. The width of these states does not require that they lie above the, as yet unobserved, DD̄ threshold. Predictions of the model are readily testable. © 1976 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Recent gravitational-wave observations from the LIGO and Virgo observatories have brought a sense of great excitement to scientists and citizens the world over. Since September 2015,10 binary black hole coalescences and one binary neutron star coalescence have been observed. They have provided remarkable, revolutionary insight into the "gravitational Universe" and have greatly extended the field of multi-messenger astronomy. At present, Advanced LIGO can see binary black hole coalescences out to redshift 0.6 and binary neutron star coalescences to redshift 0.05. This probes only a very small fraction of the volume of the observable Universe. However, current technologies can be extended to construct "3rd Generation" (3G) gravitational-wave observatories that would extend our reach to the very edge of the observable Universe. The event rates over such a large volume would be in the hundreds of thousands per year (i.e. tens per hour). Such 3G detectors would have a 10-fold improvement in strain sensitivity over the current generation of instruments, yielding signal-to-noise ratios of 1000 for events like those already seen. Several concepts are being studied for which engineering studies and reliable cost estimates will be developed in the next 5 years.

Abstract

For each optical topology of an interferometric gravitational wave detector, quantum mechanics dictates a minimum optical power (the "energetic quantum limit") to achieve a given sensitivity. For standard topologies, when one seeks to beat the standard quantum limit by a substantial factor, the energetic quantum limit becomes impossibly large. Intracavity readout schemes may do so with manageable optical powers.

18. Gravitational waves from inspiral into massive black holes

Abstract

Space-based gravitational-wave interferometers such as LISA will be sensitive to the inspiral of stellar mass compact objects into black holes with masses in the range of roughly 10^5 solar masses to (a few) 10^7 solar masses. During the last year of inspiral, the compact body spends several hundred thousand orbits spiraling from several Schwarzschild radii to the last stable orbit. The gravitational waves emitted from these orbits probe the strong-field region of the black hole spacetime and can make possible high precision tests and measurements of the black hole's properties. Measuring such waves will require a good theoretical understanding of the waves' properties, which in turn requires a good understanding of strong-field radiation reaction and of properties of the black hole's astrophysical environment which could complicate wave-form generation. In these proceedings, I review estimates of the rate at which such inspirals occur in the universe, and discuss what is being done and what must be done further in order to calculate the inspiral waveform.

19. Signal extraction and length sensing for LIGO II RSE

Abstract

In anticipation of an upgrade of the LIGO detector to an advanced configuration in 2004, a tabletop prototype of resonant sideband extraction is being designed and constructed at Caltech. We present here two frontally modulated length sensing and control schemes, one in which the signal extraction/recycling mirror is a simple mirror, and one in which it is a Fabry-Perot cavity. Issues regarding the controllability, RF sideband transmission, shot noise, and noise couplings are discussed.

Abstract

We present concepts and features of a new horizontal accelerometer whose mechanical design and machining process aim to improve the sensitivity in the frequency region between 10 mHz and 1 Hz. The expected sensitivity, less than 10^(–11) m/s^2/√Hz around 100 mHz, is a couple of orders of magnitude below the state of art limits. This accelerometer could be integrated in the active control of the LIGO II mirror seismic isolators.
