Physiological solvent flows surround biological structures triggering therein collective motions. Notable examples are virus/host-cell interactions and solvent-mediated allosteric regulation. The present work describes a multiscale approach joining the Lattice Boltzmann fluid dynamics (for solvent flows) with the all-atom atomistic molecular dynamics (for proteins) to model functional interactions between flows and molecules. We present, as an applicative scenario, the study of the SARS-CoV-2 virus spike glycoprotein protein interacting with the surrounding solvent, modeled as a mesoscopic fluid. The equilibrium properties of the wild-type spike and of the Alpha variant in implicit solvent are described by suitable observables. Synthetic ferrimagnets based on Co and Gd bear promise for directly bridging the gap between volatile information in the photonic domain and non-volatile information in the magnetic domain, without the need for any intermediary electronic conversion. Specifically, these systems exhibit strong spin-orbit torque effects, fast domain wall motion and single-pulse all-optical switching of the magnetization. An important open challenge to bring these materials to the brink of applications is to achieve long-term stability of their magnetic properties. In this work, we address the time-evolution of the magnetic moment and compensation temperature of magnetron sputter grown Pt/Co/Gd trilayers with various capping layers. Over the course of three months, the net magnetic moment and compensation temperature change significantly, which we attribute to quenching of the Gd magnetization. We identify that intermixing of the capping layer and Gd is primarily responsible for this effect, which can be alleviated by choosing nitrides for capping as long as reduction of nitride to oxide is properly addressed. Superconducting circuits are among the most advanced quantum computing technologies, however their performance is currently limited by losses found in surface oxides and disordered materials. Here, we identify and spatially localize a near-field signature of loss centers on tantalum films using terahertz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). Making use of terahertz nanospectroscopy, we observe a localized excess vibrational mode around 0.5 THz and identify this resonance as the boson peak, a signature of amorphous materials. Grazing-incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering (GIWAXS) shows that oxides on freshly solvent-cleaned samples are amorphous, whereas crystalline phases emerge after aging in air. By localizing defect centers at the nanoscale, our characterization techniques and results will inform the optimization of fabrication procedures for new low-loss superconducting circuits., 15 pages including supplement. 13 figures (4 in main text, 9 in supplement)

Ferroelectricity (Valasek, J. Phys. Rev. 1921, 17, 475) - a spontaneous formation of electric polarisation - is a solid state phenomenon, usually, associated with ionic compounds or complex materials. Here we show that, atypically for elemental solids, few-layer graphenes can host an equilibrium out-of-plane electric polarisation, switchable by sliding the constituent graphene sheets. The systems hosting such effect include mixed-stacking tetralayers and thicker (5-9 layers) rhombohedral graphitic films with a twin boundary in the middle of a flake. The predicted electric polarisation would also appear in marginally (small-angle) twisted few-layer flakes, where lattice reconstruction would give rise to networks of mesoscale domains with alternating value and sign of out-of-plane polarisation., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

Particle-hole symmetry plays an important role for the characterization of topological phases in solid-state systems. It is found, for example, in free-fermion systems at half filling, and it is closely related to the notion of antiparticles in relativistic field theories. In the low energy limit, graphene is a prime example of a gapless particle-hole symmetric system described by an effective Dirac equation, where topological phases can be understood by studying ways to open a gap by preserving (or breaking) symmetries. An important example is the intrinsic Kane-Mele spin-orbit gap of graphene, which leads to a lifting of the spin-valley degeneracy and renders graphene a topological insulator in a quantum spin Hall phase, while preserving particle-hole symmetry. Here, we show that bilayer graphene allows realizing electron-hole double quantum-dots that exhibit nearly perfect particle-hole symmetry, where transport occurs via the creation and annihilation of single electron-hole pairs with opposite quantum numbers. Moreover, we show that this particle-hole symmetry results in a protected single-particle spin-valley blockade. The latter will allow robust spin-to-charge conversion and valley-to-charge conversion, which is essential for the operation of spin and valley qubits.

Closed cycle $He^{3}-He^{4}$ dilution cryostats became the platform of choice in quantum sciences in the era of helium shortage. However, in many experiments, the mechanical vibrations induced by the pulsed cryocoolers present a significant drawback reflected both in electronic and mechanical noises. Here, we present a hybrid dilution cryostat platform; we have automated a commercial closed-cycle system to operate on a cryocooler or on a liquid helium battery. We implemented a scanning SQUID microscope in the hybrid dilution refrigerator. In this work we show the design of the hybrid setup and how its operation eliminates vibration artefacts in magnetic imaging.

Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide are endowed with intrinsic valley-orbit coupling between their center-of-mass motion and valley pseudospin. When trapped in a confinement potential, e.g., generated by strain field, we find that intralayer excitons are valley and orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled. By tuning trap profile and external magnetic field, one can engineer the exciton states at ground state, and realize a series of valley-OAM entangled states. We further show that the OAM of excitons can be transferred to emitted photons, and these novel exciton states can naturally serve as polarization-OAM locked single photon emitters, which under certain circumstance become polarization-OAM entangled, highly tunable by strain trap and magnetic field. Our proposal demonstrates a novel scheme to generate polarization-OAM locked/entangled photons at nanoscale with high degree of integrability and tunability, pointing to exciting opportunities for quantum information applications., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Hole spin qubits based on germanium (Ge) have strong tunable spin orbit interaction (SOI) and ultrafast qubit operation speed. Here we report that the Rabi frequency (f_Rabi) of a hole spin qubit in a Ge hut wire (HW) double quantum dot (DQD) is electrically tuned through the detuning energy and middle gate voltage (V_M). f_Rabi gradually decreases with increasing detuning energy; on the contrary, f_Rabi is positively correlated with V_M. We attribute our results to the change of electric field on SOI and the contribution of the excited state in quantum dots to f_Rabi. We further demonstrate an ultrafast f_Rabi exceeding 1.2 GHz, which evidences the strong SOI in our device. The discovery of an ultrafast and electrically tunable f_Rabi in a hole spin qubit has potential applications in semiconductor quantum computing., 19 pages, 4 figures

We report the magnitude of the induced magnetic moment in CVD-grown epitaxial and rotated-domain graphene in proximity with a ferromagnetic Ni film, using polarized neutron reflectivity (PNR) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The XMCD spectra at the C K-edge confirms the presence of a magnetic signal in the graphene layer and the sum rules give a magnetic moment of up to $\sim\,0.47\,\mu$_B/C atom induced in the graphene layer. For a more precise estimation, we conducted PNR measurements. The PNR results indicate an induced magnetic moment of $\sim$ 0.53 $\mu$_B/C atom at 10 K for rotated graphene and $\sim$ 0.38 $\mu$_B/C atom at 10 K for epitaxial graphene. Additional PNR measurements on graphene grown on a non-magnetic Ni_9Mo_1 substrate, where no magnetic moment in graphene is measured, suggest that the origin of the induced magnetic moment is due to the opening of the graphene's Dirac cone as a result of the strong C pz-3d hybridization., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

The superposition principle is one of the most fundamental principles of quantum mechanics. According to the Schr\"odinger equation, a physical system can be in any linear combination of its possible states. While the validity of this principle is routinely validated for microscopic systems, it is still unclear why we do not observe macroscopic objects to be in superpositions of states that can be distinguished by some classical property. Here we demonstrate the preparation of a mechanical resonator with an effective mass of 16.2 micrograms in Schr\"odinger cat states of motion, where the constituent atoms are in a superposition of oscillating with two opposite phases. We show control over the size and phase of the superposition and investigate the decoherence dynamics of these states. Apart from shedding light at the boundary between the quantum and the classical world, our results are of interest for quantum technologies, as they pave the way towards continuous-variable quantum information processing and quantum metrology with mechanical resonators.

We showed in past work that nanopatterned monolayer graphene (NPG) enables spectrally selective thermal emission in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) from 3 to 12 $\mu$m. In that case the spectral selection is realized by means of the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonances inside graphene. Here we show that graphene decorated with metallic nanoparticles, such as Ag nanocubes or nanospheres, also realize spectrally selective thermal emission, but in this case by means of acoustic graphene plasmons (AGPs) localized between graphene and the Ag nanoparticle inside a dielectric material. Our finite-difference time domain (FDTD) calculations show that the spectrally selective thermal radiation emission can be tuned by means of a gate voltage into two different wavelength regimes, namely the atmospherically opaque regime between $\lambda=5$ $\mu$m and $\lambda=8$ $\mu$m or the atmospherically transparent regime between $\lambda=8$ $\mu$m and $\lambda=12$ $\mu$m. This allows for electric switching between radiative heat trapping mode for the fomer regime and radiative cooling mode for the latter regime. The most recognizable feature of graphene's electronic spectrum is its Dirac point around which interesting phenomena tend to cluster. At low temperatures, the intrinsic behavior in this regime is often obscured by charge inhomogeneity but thermal excitations can overcome the disorder at elevated temperatures and create electron-hole plasma of Dirac fermions. The Dirac plasma has been found to exhibit unusual properties including quantum critical scattering and hydrodynamic flow. However, little is known about the plasma's behavior in magnetic fields. Here we report magnetotransport in this quantum-critical regime. In low fields, the plasma exhibits giant parabolic magnetoresistivity reaching >100% in 0.1 T even at room temperature. This is orders of magnitude higher than magnetoresistivity found in any other system at such temperatures. We show that this behavior is unique to monolayer graphene, being underpinned by its massless spectrum and ultrahigh mobility, despite frequent (Planckian-limit) scattering. With the onset of Landau quantization in a few T, where the electron-hole plasma resides entirely on the zeroth Landau level, giant linear magnetoresistivity emerges. It is nearly independent of temperature and can be suppressed by proximity screening, indicating a many-body origin. Clear parallels with magnetotransport in strange metals and so-called quantum linear magnetoresistance predicted for Weyl metals offer an interesting playground to further explore relevant physics using this well-defined quantum-critical 2D system., 8 pages, 3 figures

The energetic positions of molecular electronic states at molecule/electrode interfaces are crucial factors for determining the transport and optoelectronic properties of molecular junctions. Strong light--matter coupling offers a potential for manipulating these factors, enabling to boost in the efficiency and versatility of these junctions. Here, we investigate electroluminescence from single-molecule junctions in which the molecule is strongly coupled with the vacuum electromagnetic field in a plasmonic nanocavity. We demonstrate an improvement in the electroluminescence efficiency by employing the strong light--matter coupling in conjunction with the characteristic feature of single-molecule junctions to selectively control the formation of the lowest-energy excited state. The mechanism of efficiency improvement is discussed based on the energetic position and composition of the formed polaritonic states. Our findings indicate the possibility to manipulate optoelectronic conversion in molecular junctions by strong light--matter coupling and contribute to providing design principles for developing efficient molecular optoelectronic devices.

Recent direct measurements of the growth kinetics of individual carbon nanotubes revealed abrupt changes in the growth rate of nanotubes maintaining the same crystal structure. These stochastic switches call into question the possibility of chirality selection based on growth kinetics. Here, we show that a similar average ratio between fast and slow rates of around 1.7 is observed largely independent of the catalyst and growth conditions. A simple model, supported by computer simulations, shows that these switches are caused by tilts of the growing nanotube edge between two main orientations, close-armchair or close-zigzag, inducing different growth mechanisms. The rate ratio of around 1.7 then simply results from an averaging of the number of growth sites and edge configurations in each orientation. Beyond providing new insights on nanotube growth based on classical crystal growth theory, these results point to ways to control the dynamics of nanotube edges, a key requirement for stabilizing growth kinetics and producing arrays of long structurally-selected nanotubes.

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are promising materials for classical and quantum light emission. To understand these outstanding properties, a thorough analysis of the band-edge exciton emission is needed which is not reachable in ensemble and room temperature studies because of broadening effects. Here, we report on a cryogenic-temperature study of the photoluminescence of single CsPbBr$_3$ NCs in the intermediate quantum confinement regime. We reveal the size-dependence of the spectral features observed: the bright-triplet exciton energy splittings, the trion and biexciton binding energies as well as the optical phonon replica spectrum. In addition, we show that bright triplet energy splittings are consistent with a pure exchange model and that the variety of polarisation properties and spectra recorded can be rationalised simply by considering the orientation of the emitting dipoles and the populations of the emitting states.

In a nanowire (NW) of a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), the quantum-confinement of topological surface states leads to a peculiar subband structure that is useful for generating Majorana bound states. Top-down fabrication of TINWs from a high-quality thin film would be a scalable technology with great design flexibility, but there has been no report on top-down-fabricated TINWs where the chemical potential can be tuned to the charge neutrality point (CNP). Here we present a top-down fabrication process for bulk-insulating TINWs etched from high-quality (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$)$_2$Te$_3$ thin films without degradation. We show that the chemical potential can be gate-tuned to the CNP and the resistance of the NW presents characteristic oscillations as functions of the gate voltage and the parallel magnetic field, manifesting the TI-subband physics. We further demonstrate the superconducting proximity effect in these TINWs, preparing the groundwork for future devices to investigate Majorana bound states., Comment: 32 pages. 22 main text, 10 SI

Broken symmetries lie at the heart of nontrivial physical phenomena. Breaking the in-plane geometrical symmetry of optical systems allows to access a set of electromagnetic states termed symmetry-protected quasi-bound states in the continuum (qBICs). Here we demonstrate, theoretically, numerically and experimentally, that such optical states can also be accessed in metasurfaces by breaking the in-plane symmetry in the permittivity of the comprising materials, showing a remarkable equivalence to their geometrically-asymmetric counterparts. However, while the physical size of atoms imposes a limit on the lowest achievable geometrical asymmetry, weak permittivity modulations due to carrier doping and electro-optical Pockels and Kerr effects, usually considered insignificant, open up the possibility of infinitesimal permittivity asymmetries for on-demand, and dynamically tuneable optical resonances of extremely high quality factors. We probe the excitation of permittivity-asymmetric qBICs (${\varepsilon}$-qBICs) using a prototype Si/TiO$_{2}$ metasurface, in which the asymmetry in the unit cell is provided by the refractive index contrast of the dissimilar materials, surpassing any unwanted asymmetries from nanofabrication defects or angular deviations of light from normal incidence. ${\varepsilon}$-qBICs can also be excited in 1D gratings, where quality-factor enhancement and tailored interference phenomena via the interplay of geometrical and permittivity asymmetries are numerically demonstrated. Size- and shape- dependent unique properties of the metal halide perovskite nanocrystals make them promising building blocks for constructing various electronic and optoelectronic devices. These unique properties together with their easy colloidal synthesis render them efficient nanoscale functional components for multiple applications ranging from light emission devices to energy conversion and storage devices. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) metal halide perovskites in the form of nanosheets (NSs) or nanoplatelets (NPls) are being intensively studied due to their promising 2D geometry which is more compatible with the conventional electronic and optoelectronic device structures where film-like components are employed. In particular, 2D perovskites exhibit unique thickness-dependent properties due to the strong quantum confinement effect, while enabling the bandgap tuning in a wide spectral range. In this review the synthesis procedures of 2D perovskite nanostructures will be summarized, while the application-related properties together with the corresponding applications will be extensively discussed. In addition, perovskite nanocrystals/2D material heterostructures will be reviewed in detail. Finally, the wide application range of the 2D perovskite-based structures developed to date, including pure perovskites and their heterostructures, will be presented while the improved synergetic properties of the multifunctional materials will be discussed in a comprehensive way., 83 pages, 38 Figures

In valence change memory (VCM) cells, the conductance of an insulating switching layer is reversibly modulated by creating and redistributing point defects under an external field. Accurately simulating the switching dynamics of these devices can be difficult due to their typically disordered atomic structures and inhomogeneous arrangements of defects. To address this, we introduce an atomistic framework for modeling VCM cells. It combines a stochastic kinetic Monte Carlo approach for atomic rearrangement with a quantum transport scheme, both parametrized at the ab initio level by using inputs from density functional theory. Each of these steps operates directly on the underly i n g atomic structure. The model thus directly relates the energy landscape and electronic structure of the device to its switching characteristics. We apply this model to simulate field-induced nonvolatile switching between high-and low-resistance states in a TiN/HfO2/Ti/TiN stack and analyze both the kinetics and stochasticity of the conductance transitions. We also resolve the atomic nature of current flow resulting from the valence change mechanism, finding that conductive paths are formed between the undercoordinated Hf atoms neighboring oxygen vacancies. The model developed here can be applied to different material systems to evaluate their resistive switching potential, both for use as conventional memory cells and as neuromorphic computing primitives. Two essential ingredients for the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, i.e. topological and magnetic orders, can be combined by doping magnetic ions into a topological insulator (TI) film. Through this approach, the QAH effect has been realized in chromium (Cr)- and/or vanadium (V)-doped TI (Bi,Sb)2Te3 thin films. In this work, we synthesize both V- and Cr-doped Bi2Te3 thin films with controlled dopant concentration using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). By performing magneto-transport measurements, we find that both systems show an unusual but yet similar ferromagnetic response with respect to magnetic dopant concentration, specifically the Curie temperature does not increase monotonically but shows a local maximum at a critical dopant concentration. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that the Cr/V doping introduces hole carriers into Bi2Te3, which consequently move the chemical potential toward the charge neutral point. In addition, the Cr/V doping also reduces the spin-orbit coupling of Bi2Te3 which drives it from a nontrivial TI to a trivial semiconductor. The unusual ferromagnetic response observed in Cr/V-doped Bi2Te3 thin films is attributed to the dopant-concentration-induced magnetic exchange interaction, which displays the evolution from the van Vleck-type ferromagnetism in a nontrivial magnetic TI to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY)-type ferromagnetism in a trivial diluted magnetic semiconductor. Our work provides insights into the ferromagnetic properties of magnetically doped TI thin films and facilitates the pursuit of high-temperature QAH effect., 17 pages, 4 figures. Intrinsic optoelectronic properties of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) remain largely unexplored because of luminescence quenching effects that are due to the metallic substrate on which the ribbons are grown. We probed excitonic emission from GNRs synthesized on a metal surface with atomic-scale spatial resolution. A scanning tunneling microscope (STM)–based method to transfer the GNRs to a partially insulating surface was used to prevent luminescence quenching of the ribbons. STM-induced fluorescence spectra reveal emission from localized dark excitons that are associated with the topological end states of the GNRs. A low-frequency vibronic emission comb is observed and attributed to longitudinal acoustic modes that are confined to a finite box. Our study provides a path to investigate the interplay between excitons, vibrons, and topology in graphene nanostructures.

Excitons, Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs, play a fundamental role in both optical excitation and correlated phenomena in solids. When an exciton interacts with other quasi-particles, few- and many-body excited states, such as trions, exciton Fermi-polarons, Mahan excitons can appear. Here, we report a new interaction between exciton and charges enabled by unusual quantum confinement in 2D moir\'e superlattices, which results in novel exciton many-body ground states composed of moir\'e excitons and correlated electron lattices. Unique to H-stacked (or 60o-twisted) WS2/WSe2 heterobilayer, we found that the interlayer atomic registry and moir\'e structural reconstruction leads to an interlayer moir\'e exciton (IME) whose hole in one layer is surrounded by its partner electron's wavefunction spread among three adjacent moir\'e traps in the other layer. This 3D excitonic structure can enable large in-plane electrical quadrupole moments in addition to the vertical dipole. Upon doping, the electric quadrupole facilitates the binding of IME to the charges in neighboring moir\'e cells, forming an intercell charged exciton complex. The exciton complex is unveiled by the IME photoluminescence energy jumps when the electron lattices form at both fractional and integer-filled moir\'e minibands, with replica-like spectral features between successive integer moir\'e fillings. Our work provides the framework in understanding and engineering emergent exciton many-body states in correlated moir\'e charge orders.

Numerous attempts have been made so far to explore the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), but the ultralow observed temperature strongly hinders its practical applications. Hence, it is of great interest to go beyond the existing paradigm of QAHE. Here, we propose that Floquet engineering offers a strategy to realize the QAHE via hybridization of Floquet-Bloch bands. Based on first-principles calculations and Floquet theorem, we unveil that nonequilibrium valley-polarized QAHE (VP-QAHE), independent of magnetic orders, is widely present in ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic members of two-dimensional family materials $M$Si$_2$$Z_4$ ($M$ = Mo, W, V; $Z$ = N, P, As) by irradiating circularly polarized light (CPL). Remarkably, by tuning the frequency, intensity, and handedness of incident CPL, the Chern number of VP-QAHE is highly tunable and up to $\mathcal{C}=\pm 4$. We reveal that such Chern number tunable VP-QAHE attributes to light-induced trigonal warping and multiple band inversion at different valleys. The valley-resolved chiral edge states and quantized plateau of Hall conductance, which facilitates the experimental measurement, are visible inside the global band gap. Our work not only establishes Floquet Engineering of nonequilibrium VP-QAHE with tunable Chern number in realistic materials, but also provides a promising avenue to explore emergent topological phases under light irradiation., 6 pages, 4 figures

Flux transformers are the necessary component of all superconductor digital integrated circuits utilizing ac power for logic cell excitation and clocking, and flux biasing, e.g., Adiabatic Quantum Flux Parametron (AQFP), Reciprocal Quantum Logic, superconducting sensor arrays, qubits, etc. We consider limitations to the integration scale (device number density) imposed by the critical current of the ac power transmission lines and cross coupling between the adjacent transformers. The former sets the minimum line width and the mutual coupling length in the transformer, whereas the latter sets the minimum spacing between the transformers. Decreasing linewidth of superconducting (Nb) wires increases kinetic inductance of the transformer's secondary, decreasing its length and mutual coupling to the primary. This limits the minimum size of transformers. As a result, there is a minimum linewidth ~100 nm which determines the maximum achievable scale of integration. Using AQFP circuits as an example, we calculate dependence of the AQFP number density on linewidth for various types of transformers and inductors available in the SFQ5ee fabrication process developed at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and estimate the maximum circuit density as a few million AQFPs per cm^2. We propose an advanced fabrication process for a 10x increase in the density of AQFP and other ac-powered circuits. In this process, inductors are formed from a patterned bilayer of a geometrical inductance material (Nb) deposited over a layer of high kinetic inductance material (e.g., NbN). Noise spectroscopy elucidates the fundamental noise sources in spin systems, which is essential for developing spin qubits with long coherence times for quantum information processing, communication, and sensing. But noise spectroscopy typically relies on microwave coherent spin control to extract the noise spectrum, which becomes infeasible when there are high-frequency noise components stronger than the available microwave power. Here, we demonstrate an alternative all-optical approach to performing noise spectroscopy. Our approach utilises coherent Raman rotations of the spin state with controlled timing and phase to implement Carr-Purcell-Meiboom-Gill (CPMG) pulse sequences. Analysing the spin dynamics under these sequences enables us to extract the noise spectrum of a dense ensemble of nuclear spins interacting with a single spin in a quantum dot, which has thus far only been modelled theoretically. By providing large spectral bandwidths of over 100 MHz, our Raman-based approach could serve as an important tool to study spin dynamics and decoherence mechanisms for a broad range of solid-state spin qubits.

The invention of scanning probe microscopy has revolutionized the way electronic phenomena are visualized. While present-day probes can access a variety of electronic properties at a single location in space, a scanning microscope that can directly probe the quantum mechanical existence of an electron at multiple locations would provide direct access to key quantum properties of electronic systems, so far unreachable. Here, we demonstrate a conceptually new type of scanning probe microscope - the Quantum Twisting Microscope (QTM) - capable of performing local interference experiments at its tip. The QTM is based on a unique van-der-Waals tip, allowing the creation of pristine 2D junctions, which provide a multitude of coherently-interfering paths for an electron to tunnel into a sample. With the addition of a continuously scanned twist angle between the tip and sample, this microscope probes electrons in momentum space similar to the way a scanning tunneling microscope probes electrons in real space. Through a series of experiments, we demonstrate room temperature quantum coherence at the tip, study the twist angle evolution of twisted bilayer graphene, directly image the energy bands of monolayer and twisted bilayer graphene, and finally, apply large local pressures while visualizing the evolution of the flat energy bands of the latter. The QTM opens the way for novel classes of experiments on quantum materials.

The flow of charge carriers in materials can, under some circumstances, mimic the flow of viscous fluids. In order to visualize the consequences of such effects, new methodologies must be developed that can probe the quasiparticle flow profile with nm-scale resolution as the geometric parameters of the system are continuously evolved. In this work, scanning tunneling potentiometry (STP) is used to image quasiparticle flow around engineered electrostatic barriers in graphene/hBN heterostructures. Measurements are performed as electrostatic dams - defined by lateral pn-junction barriers - are broken within the graphene sheet, and carriers move through conduction channels with physical widths that vary continuously from pinch-off to um-scale. Local, STP measurements of the electrochemical potential allow for direct characterization of the evolving flow profile, which we compare to finite-element simulations of a Stokesian fluid with varying parameters. Our results reveal distinctly non-Ohmic flow profiles, with charge dipoles forming across barriers due to carrier scattering and accumulation on the upstream side, and depletion downstream. Conductance measurements of individual channels, meanwhile, reveal that at low temperatures the quasiparticle flow is ballistic, but as the temperature is raised there is a Knudsen-to-Gurzhi regime crossover where the fluid becomes viscous and the channel conductance exceeds the ballistic limit set by Sharvin conductance. These results provide a clear illustration of how carrier flow in a Fermi fluid evolves as a function of carrier density, channel width, and temperature. They also demonstrate how STP can be used to extract key parameters of quasiparticle transport, with a spatial resolution that exceeds that of other methods by orders of magnitude.

Majorana bound states constitute one of the simplest examples of emergent non-Abelian excitations in condensed matter physics. A toy model proposed by Kitaev shows that such states can arise on the ends of a spinless $p$-wave superconducting chain. Practical proposals for its realization require coupling neighboring quantum dots in a chain via both electron tunneling and crossed Andreev reflection. While both processes have been observed in semiconducting nanowires and carbon nanotubes, crossed-Andreev interaction was neither easily tunable nor strong enough to induce coherent hybridization of dot states. Here we demonstrate the simultaneous presence of all necessary ingredients for an artificial Kitaev chain: two spin-polarized quantum dots in an InSb nanowire strongly coupled by both elastic co-tunneling and crossed Andreev reflection. We fine-tune this system to a sweet spot where a pair of Majorana bound states is predicted to appear. At this sweet spot, the transport characteristics satisfy the theoretical predictions for such a system, including pairwise correlation, zero charge, and stability against local perturbations of the Majorana state. While the simple system presented here can be scaled to simulate a full Kitaev chain with an emergent topological order, it can also be used imminently to explore relevant physics related to non-Abelian anyons., 35 pages, 11 figures

Noise in existing quantum processors only enables an approximation to ideal quantum computation. However, these approximations can be vastly improved by error mitigation, for the computation of expectation values, as shown by small-scale experimental demonstrations. However, the practical scaling of these methods to larger system sizes remains unknown. Here, we demonstrate the utility of zero-noise extrapolation for relevant quantum circuits using up to 26 qubits, circuit depths of 60, and 1080 CNOT gates. We study the scaling of the method for canonical examples of product states and entangling Clifford circuits of increasing size, and extend it to the quench dynamics of 2-D Ising spin lattices with varying couplings. We show that the efficacy of the error mitigation is greatly enhanced by additional error suppression techniques and native gate decomposition that reduce the circuit time. By combining these methods, we demonstrate an accuracy in the approximate quantum simulation of the quench dynamics that surpasses the classical approximations obtained from a state-of-the-art 2-D tensor network method. We report recent progress towards the realization of a sub-mK, low-vibration environment at the bottom stage of a dry dilution refrigerator for use in mechanical tests of quantum mechanics. Using adiabatic nuclear demagnetization, we have cooled a silicon cantilever force sensor to $T\approx 1$ mK. The temperature of the tip-holder of the cantilever chip was determined via a primary magnetic flux noise thermometer. The quality factor of the cantilever continues to increase with decreasing temperature, reaching $Q\approx 4\cdot 10^4$ at $2$ mK. To demonstrate that the vibration isolation is not compromised, we report the detection of the thermal motion of the cantilever down to $T \approx 20$ mK, only limited by the coupling to the SQUID readout circuit. We perform a theoretical analysis of the fate of local magnetic moment of a quantum dot coupled to a normal metallic lead and a topological superconducting wire hosting Majorana modes at the ends. By means of simple analytical tools and numerical renormalization group calculations we show that the proximity of Majorana mode reduces the magnetic moment from $1/4$, characteristic of a free spin $1/2$, to $1/16$. The coupling to the normal lead then causes the Kondo effect, such that the magnetic moment is fully screened below the Kondo temperature. The dynamics of magnetic moments consist of a precession around the magnetic field direction and a relaxation towards the field to minimize the energy. While the magnetic moment and the angular momentum are conventionally assumed to be parallel to each other, at ultrafast time scales their directions become separated due to inertial effects. The inertial dynamics give rise to additional high-frequency modes in the excitation spectrum of magnetic materials. Tuning a material to the cusp between two distinct ground states can produce exotic physical properties, unlike those in either of the neighboring phases. The prospect of designing a model experimental system to capture such behavior is tantalizing. An array of tunnel-coupled quantum dots, each hosting a local spin, should have an appropriately complex phase diagram, but scaling up from individual dots to uniform clusters or lattices has proven difficult: though each site can be tuned to the same occupancy, each has a different set of localized wavefunctions whose couplings to neighboring sites cannot be made fully uniform. An array of metal nanostructures has complementary strengths and weaknesses: simple electrostatic tuning can make each element behave essentially identically, but intersite coupling is not tunable. In this work, we study a tunable nanoelectronic circuit comprising two coupled hybrid metallic-semiconductor islands, combining the strengths of the two types of materials, and demonstrating the potential for scalability. With two charge states of an island acting as an effective spin-1/2, the new architecture also offers a rich range of coupling interactions, and we exploit this to demonstrate a novel quantum critical point. The fractional quantum Hall states have long been predicted to be a testing ground of fractional (anyonic) exchange statistics. These topological states harbor quasiparticles with fractional charges of both abelian and non-abelian characters. The quasiparticles' charge is commonly determined by shot noise measurements (1, 2), and states' statistics can be revealed by appropriately interfering the quasiparticles. While the multipath Fabry-Perot electronic interferometer (FPI) is easier to fabricate, it is often plagued by Coulomb interactions (3), its area breathes with the magnetic field (4), and its bulk's charges tend to fluctuate (5). Recent FPI experiments employing adequate screening allowed an observation of Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interference at bulk filling $\nu$=1/3 (6). In the current work, we chose to employ an interaction-free, two-path, Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI), tuned to bulk filling $\nu$=2/5. Interfering the outer $\nu$=1/3 mode (with the inner $\nu$=1/15 mode screening out the bulk), we observed a 'dressed AB' periodicity, with a combined 'bare AB' flux periodicity of three flux-quanta (3$\phi_0$) and the 'braiding phase' 2$\pi$/3. This unique interference resulted with an AB periodicity of a single flux-quantum. Moreover, the visibility of the interference, $v_{e/3}$, deviated markedly from that of the electronic one $\it{v}_{e}$, agreeing with the theoretically expected visibility, $\it{v}_{e/3} \sim {\it{v}_e}^3$. With the two non-equivalent drains of the MZI, the fractional visibility peaked away from the ubiquitous transmission-half of the MZI. We provide simple theoretical arguments that support our results. The MZI proves to be a powerful tool that can be used to probe further the statistics of more complex anyonic quasiparticles.

Once called a "classically non-describable two-valuedness" by Pauli , the electron spin is a natural resource for long-lived quantum information since it is mostly impervious to electric fluctuations and can be replicated in large arrays using silicon quantum dots, which offer high-fidelity control. Paradoxically, one of the most convenient control strategies is the integration of nanoscale magnets to artificially enhance the coupling between spins and electric field, which in turn hampers the spin's noise immunity and adds architectural complexity. Here we demonstrate a technique that enables a \emph{switchable} interaction between spins and orbital motion of electrons in silicon quantum dots, without the presence of a micromagnet. The naturally weak effects of the relativistic spin-orbit interaction in silicon are enhanced by more than three orders of magnitude by controlling the energy quantisation of electrons in the nanostructure, enhancing the orbital motion. Fast electrical control is demonstrated in multiple devices and electronic configurations, highlighting the utility of the technique. Using the electrical drive we achieve coherence time $T_{2,{\rm Hahn}}\approx50 \mu$s, fast single-qubit gates with ${T_{\pi/2}=3}$ ns and gate fidelities of 99.93 % probed by randomised benchmarking. The higher gate speeds and better compatibility with CMOS manufacturing enabled by on-demand electric control improve the prospects for realising scalable silicon quantum processors.

Since the emergence of graphene, we have seen several proposals for the realization of Landau lasers tunable over the terahertz frequency range. The hope was that the non-equidistance of the Landau levels from Dirac fermions would suppress the harmful non-radiative Auger recombination. Unfortunately, even with this non-equidistance an unfavorable non-radiative process persists in Landau-quantized graphene, and so far no cyclotron emission from Dirac fermions has been reported. One way to eliminate this last non-radiative process is to sufficiently modify the dispersion of the Landau levels by opening a small gap in the linear band structure. A proven example of such gapped graphene-like materials are HgTe quantum wells close to the topological phase transition. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate Landau emission from Dirac fermions in such HgTe quantum wells, where the emission is tunable by both the magnetic field and the carrier concentration. Quantum oscillations in resistivity and magnetization at high magnetic fields are a macroscopic fingerprint of the energy quantization due to the cyclotron motion of quasiparticles. In a thin Weyl semimetal, a unique thickness dependent Weyl-orbit quantum oscillation was proposed to exist, originating from a nonlocal cyclotron orbit via the electron tunneling between the top and bottom Fermi-arc surface states. Here, untwinned and high crystalline Weyl metal SrRuO$_3$ thin films with different thicknesses were grown on miscut SrTiO$_3$ (001) substrates. Magneto-transport measurements were carried out in magnetic fields up to 35 T, and quantum oscillations with different frequencies were observed and compared to the calculated band structure. In particular, we discovered a frequency $F \approx$ 30 T at low temperatures and above 3 T that corresponds to a small Fermi pocket with a light effective mass. Its oscillation amplitude appears to be at maximum for film thicknesses in a range of 10 to 20 nm, and the phase of the oscillation exhibits a systematic change with the film thickness. After isolating the well separated frequencies, the constructed Landau fan diagram shows an unusual concave downward curvature in the 1/$\mu_0H_n$-$n$ curve, where $n$ is the Landau level index. Based on the rigorous analysis of the thickness and field-orientation dependence of the quantum oscillations, the oscillation with $F \approx$ 30 T is attributed to be of surface origin, which is related to the Fermi-arc surface state originating from non-overlapping Weyl nodes projected on the film's surface plane. We report a study on the relationship between structure and electron transport properties of nanoscale graphene/pentacene interfaces. We fabricated graphene/pentacene interfaces from 10-30 nm thick needle-like pentacene nanostructures down to two-three layers (2L-3L) dendritic pentacene islands, and we measured their electron transport properties by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). The energy barrier at the interfaces, i.e. the energy position of the pentacene highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) with respect to the Fermi energy of the graphene and the C-AFM metal tip, are determined and discussed with the appropriate electron transport model (double Schottky diode model and Landauer-Buttiker model, respectively) taking into account the voltage-dependent charge doping of graphene. In both types of samples, the energy barrier at the graphene/pentacene interface is slightly larger than that at the pentacene/metal tip interface, resulting in 0.47-0.55 eV and 0.21-0.34 eV, respectively, for the 10-30 nm thick needle-like pentacene islands, and in 0.92-1.44 eV and 0.67-1.05 eV, respectively, for the 2L-3L thick dendritic pentacene nanostructures. We attribute this difference to the molecular organization details of the pentacene/graphene heterostructures, with pentacene molecules lying flat on the graphene in the needle-like pentacene nansotructures, while standing upright in 2L-3L dendritic islands, as observed from Raman spectroscopy., Comment: Paper and its supplementary information

We report direct imaging of boundary magnetization associated with antiferromagnetic domains in magnetoelectric epitaxial Cr2O3 thin films using diamond nitrogen vacancy microscopy. We found a correlation between magnetic domain size and structural grain size which we associate with the domain formation process. We performed field cooling, i.e., cooling from above to below the N\'eel temperature in the presence of magnetic field, which resulted in the selection of one of the two otherwise degenerate 180 degree domains. Lifting of such a degeneracy is achievable with a magnetic field alone due to the Zeeman energy of a weak parasitic magnetic moment in Cr2O3 films that originates from defects and the imbalance of the boundary magnetization of opposing interfaces. This boundary magnetization couples to the antiferromagnetic order parameter enabling selection of its orientation. Nanostructuring the Cr2O3 film with mesa structures revealed reversible edge magnetic states with the direction of magnetic field during field cooling.

The electrostatics of two-dimensional (2D) lateral pn homojunctions considering the impact of electrostatic doping by means of two split bottom-gates are studied here. Analytical expressions are obtained from the solution of the 2D Poisson equation considering a depletion approximation. Straightforward analytical models for the electrostatic potential and the depletion width within both the dielectric and the 2D semiconductor are obtained for both the symmetrical and asymmetrical cases. In contrast to the case of devices with chemical doping, the obtained depletion width model of devices with electrostatic doping do not depend on the dielectric constant but only on the electrostatic potential and oxide thickness. The models describe the electrostatics of gate-tunable 2D pn junctions at arbitrary bias. A benchmark against numerical device simulations of MoS2-based pn junctions validate the analytical models.

We detail the effects of Cl and S functionalization on the superconducting properties of layered (bulk) and monolayer niobium carbide (Nb2C) MXene crystals, based on first-principles calculations combined with Eliashberg theory. For bulk layered Nb2CCl2, the calculated superconducting transition temperature (T-c) is in very good agreement with the recently measured value of 6 K. We show that T-c is enhanced to 10 K for monolayer Nb2CCl2, due to an increase in the density of states at the Fermi level, and the corresponding electron-phonon coupling. We further demonstrate feasible gate- and strain-induced enhancements of T-c for both bulk-layered and monolayer Nb2CCl2 crystals, resulting in T-c values of around 38 K. In the S-functionalized Nb2CCl2 crystals, our calculations reveal the importance of phonon softening in understanding their superconducting properties. Finally, we predict that Nb3C2S2 in bulk-layered and monolayer forms is also superconducting, with a T-c of around 28 K. Considering that Nb2C is not superconducting in pristine form, our findings promote functionalization as a pathway towards robust superconductivity in MXenes.

The on-surface synthesis of nano-graphenes has led the charge in prototyping structures with perspectives beyond silicon-based technology. Following reports of open-shell systems in graphene-nanoribbons (GNR), a flurry of research activities is directed at investigating their magnetic properties with a keen eye for spintronic applications. Although the synthesis of nano-graphenes is usually straightforward on gold, it is difficult to use it for electronic decoupling and spin-polarized measurements. Using a binary alloy Cu3Au(111), we show how to combine the efficient gold-like nano-graphene formation with spin polarization and electronic decoupling known from copper. We prepare copper oxide layers, demonstrate thermally and tip-assisted synthesis of GNR and grow thermally stable magnetic Co islands. We functionalize the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope with carbon-monoxide, nickelocene, or attach Co clusters for high-resolution imaging, magnetic sensing, or spin-polarized measurements. This versatile platform will be a valuable tool in the advanced study of magnetic nano-graphenes.

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) has emerged as an exciting new material with tunable electronic properties ranging from superconductivity to correlated insulating phases. But current methods of fabrication and identification of TBLG are painstaking and laborious. In this work, we combine Raman spectroscopy with the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) data clustering algorithm to identify areas with particular twist angles, from a TBLG sample with a mixture of orientations. We present two approaches to this cluster analysis: training the GMM on Raman parameters returned by peak fits, and on full Raman spectra with dimensionality reduced by principal component analysis. In both cases we demonstrate that GMM can identify regions of distinct twist angle from within Raman datacubes. We also show that once a model has been trained, and the identified clusters labelled, the model can be reapplied to new Raman scans to assess the similarity between the materials in the new region and the testing region. This could enable high-throughput fabrication of TBLG, by allowing computerised detection of particular twist angles from automated large-area scans.

Graphene is of great scientific interest due to a variety of unique properties such as ballistic transport, spin selectivity, the quantum hall effect, and other quantum properties. Nanopatterning and atomic scale modifications of graphene are expected to enable further control over its intrinsic properties, providing ways to tune the electronic properties through geometric and strain effects, introduce edge states and other local or extended topological defects, and sculpt circuit paths. The focused beam of a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) can be used to remove atoms, enabling milling, doping, and deposition. Utilization of a STEM as an atomic scale fabrication platform is increasing; however, a detailed understanding of beam-induced processes and the subsequent cascade of aftereffects is lacking. Here, we examine the electron beam effects on atomically clean graphene at a variety of temperatures ranging from 400 to 1000 C. We find that temperature plays a significant role in the milling rate and moderates competing processes of carbon adatom coalescence, graphene healing, and the diffusion (and recombination) of defects. The results of this work can be applied to a wider range of 2D materials and introduce better understanding of defect evolution in graphite and other bulk layered materials.

1/f noise is a critical figure of merit for the performance of transistors and circuits. For two-dimensional devices (2D-FETs), and especially for applications in the GHz range where short-channel FETs are required, velocity saturation (VS) effect can result in the reduction of 1/f noise at high longitudinal electric fields. A new physics-based compact model is for the first time introduced for single- to few- layer 2D-FETs in this study, precisely validating 1/f noise experiments for various types of devices. The proposed model mainly accounts for the measured 1/f noise bias dependence as the latter is defined by different physical mechanisms. Thus, analytical expressions are derived, valid in all regions of operation in contrast to conventional approaches available in literature so far, accounting for carrier number fluctuation (DN), mobility fluctuation (Dmu}) and contact resistance (DR) effects based on the underlying physics that rules these devices. DN mechanism due to trapping/detrapping together with an intense Coulomb scattering effect, dominates 1/f noise from medium to strong accumulation region while Dmu, is also demonstrated to modestly contribute in subthreshold region. DR can also be significant in very high carrier density. The VS induced reduction of 1/f noise measurements at high electric fields, is also remarkably captured by the model. We have developed an ab initio-based, fully quantum, numerically accurate methodology for the simulation of the exciton dynamics and time- and frequency-resolved fluorescence spectra of the cavity-controlled two-dimensional materials at finite temperatures and applied this methodology to the single-layer WSe2 system. Specifically, the multiple Davydov D2 Ansatz has been employed in combination with the method of thermofield dynamics for the finite-temperature extension of accurate time-dependent variation. This allowed us to establish dynamical and spectroscopic signatures of the polaronic and polaritonic effects as well as uncover their characteristic time scales in the relevant range of temperatures. Our study reveals the pivotal role of multidimensional conical intersections in controlling the many-body dynamics of highly intertwined excitonic, phononic, and photonic modes. Artificially twisted heterostructures of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer unprecedented control over their electronic and optical properties via the spatial modulation of interlayer interactions and structural reconstruction. Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a popular candidate for electronic and optical switching applications due to its well-known semiconductor-metal transition. Its study is notoriously challenging due to the interplay of long and short range elastic distortions, as well as the symmetry change, and the electronic structure changes. The inherent coupling of lattice and electronic degrees of freedom opens the avenue towards mechanical actuation of single domains. In this work, we show that we can manipulate and monitor the reversible semiconductor-to-metal transition of VO2 while applying a controlled amount of mechanical pressure by a nanosized metallic probe using an atomic force microscope. At a critical pressure, we can reversibly actuate the phase transition with a large modulation of the conductivity. Direct tunneling through the VO2-metal contact is observed as the main charge carrier injection mechanism before and after the phase transition of VO2. The tunneling barrier is formed by a very thin but persistently insulating surfacelayer of the VO2. The necessary pressure to induce the transition decreases with temperature. In addition, we measured the phase coexistence line in a hitherto unexplored regime. Quantitative analysis methods based on the usage of a scanning electron microscope (SEM), such as energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, often require specimens to have a flat surface oriented normal to the electron beam. In-situ procedures for putting microscopic flat surfaces into this orientation generally rely on stereoscopic methods that measure the change in surface vector projections when the surface is tilted by some known angle. Although these methods have been used in the past, there is no detailed statistical analysis of the uncertainties involved in such methods, which leaves an uncertainty in how precisely a specimen can be oriented. Here, we present a first principles derivation of a specimen orientation method and apply our method to a flat sample to demonstrate it. Unlike previous works, we develop a computer vision program using the Scale Invariant Feature Transform to automate and expedite the process of making measurements on our SEM images, thus enabling a detailed statistical analysis of the method with a large sample size. We find that our specimen orientation method is able to orient flat surfaces with high precision and can further provide insight into errors involved in the standard SEM rotation and tilt operations., 8 pages, 5 figures

Nonlinearity of electroosmotic flows (EOFs) is ubiquitous and plays a crucial role in the mass and energy transfer in ion transport, specimen mixing, electrochemistry reaction, and electric energy storage and utilizing. When and how the transition from a linear regime to a nonlinear one is essential for understanding, prohibiting or utilizing nonlinear EOF. However, suffers the lacking of reliable experimental instruments with high spatial and temporal resolutions, the investigation of the onset of nonlinear EOF still stays in theory. Herein, we experimentally studied the velocity fluctuations of EOFs driven by AC electric field via ultra-sensitive fluorescent blinking tricks. The linear and nonlinear AC EOFs are successfully identified from both the time trace and energy spectra of velocity fluctuations. The critical electric field ($E_{A,C}$) separating the two statuses is determined and is discovered by defining a generalized scaling law with respect to the convection velocity ($U$) and AC frequency ($f_f$) as $E_{A,C}$~${f_f}^{0.48-0.027U}$. The universal control parameters are determined with surprising accuracy for governing the status of AC EOFs. We hope the current investigation could be essential in the development of both theory and applications of nonlinear EOF.
