26. Determination of the isotopic composition of copper in a certified reference material HICU-1 by MC-ICP-MS using gravimetric isotope mixture calibration.

Abstract

Isotopic analysis by mass spectrometry relies on certified reference materials (CRMs) in order to correct instrumental isotopic fractionation (aka mass bias). Currently, SRM976 copper isotopic standard from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) remains the sole internationally recognized reference material for copper isotope ratio. However, the SRM976 material is no longer available and new copper isotopic CRMs are needed to serve as reference points for decades to come. In this study, we report an independent and fully calibrated isotope ratio measurement of a high-purity copper certified reference material, HICU-1, at the National Research Council Canada (NRC). MC-ICP-MS was employed for the isotope ratio measurements which were calibrated using the gravimetric isotope mixture approach involving two near-pure enriched copper isotopes. Copper isotope ratio n(63Cu)/n(65Cu) = 2.2413 ± 0.0009 (95% CI, k = 2) was established in the NRC HICU-1 and its isotopic composition has been shown to be nearly identical to that of NIST SRM976. Abstract

In this communication, we reinterpreted the experimental findings offered by Wu et al. about the presence and distribution of organic chlorides in crude oil distillates (Wu, B.; Li, Y.; Li, X.; Zhu, J. Distribution and identification of chlorides in distillates from YS crude oil. Energy Fuels 2015, 29, 1391−1396, 10.1021/ef502450w and Wu, B.; Li, Y.; Li, X.; Zhu, J.; Ma, R.; Hu, S. Organochlorine compounds with a low boiling point in desalted crude oil: Identification and conversion. Energy Fuels 2018, 32, 6475–6481, 10.1021/acs.energyfuels.8b00205). The results proposed by Wu et al. were examined employing a mass balance approach. From our preliminary analysis, we concluded that crude oil distillation may induce (significant) conversions of inorganic chloride into organic chlorides. Such an alteration in chlorine speciation could be relevant for managing corrosion issues in oil refineries.

39. Preparation and certification of natural and ⁸²Se-labelled selenomethionine reference materials

Abstract

Challenges frequently faced during the analysis of selenomethionine in complex matrices such as food and environmental samples include the lack of SI-traceable primary standards as well as difficulties associated with complex sample preparation methods resulting in potentially biased measurement results. In an effort to overcome these challenges, the National Research Council Canada has prepared two selenomethionine reference materials: a high-purity powder of natural isotopic abundance (SENS-1), and a solution of selenium-82 labelled selenomethionine (SEES-1). The purity of SENS-1, 0.961 ± 0.007 g g⁻¹ (k = 2), was established through quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy combined with data from inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry for total selenium content and the HPLC analysis of selenium-containing impurities. With the chemical purity of SENS-1 established, it was then used as the primary standard for reverse isotope dilution analysis, where the concentration of selenomethionine in SEES-1 was determined to be 1556 ± 60 μg g⁻¹ (k = 2).
