Inco Ltd. has suspended the development of its nickel-cobalt project in New Caledonia. The company, which owns 85% of the project, is concerned about the project's economic feasibility.

Bureau de Recherches et de Participations Minieres (BRPM), according to a yearly report, conducted exploration projects at 27 sites for the 2001 year. BRPM conducted exploration activities at 13 base metals site, 12 precious minerals sites, and at two industrial mineral sites.

Navan Resources plc has begun ore production at its 100%-owned Aguas Tenidas polymetalic mine in Andalucia in southern Spain. Navan has been developing the mine since September 1997. The US$7.6 million first stage development has been completed and includes a 250 metre vertical ventilation raise from the surface an a 1,400 metre access decline. At least 20% of the costs are recoverable via Spanish regional and central governments cash grants. Navan intends to continue with underground development in the coming months in conjunction with trial stopping and drilling as a way to provide a representative bulk sample from a zone within the eastern part of the orebody.
