Nanoparticles impose multidimensional effects on living cells that significantly vary among different studies. Machine learning (ML) methods are recommended to elucidate more consistence and predictable relations among the affected parameters. In this study, nine ML algorithms [Support-Vector Regression (SVR), Linear, Bagging, Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), Gaussian Process, Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC), Partial Least Squares (PLS), Kernel Ridge, and Random Forest] were applied to evaluate their efficiency in predicting the effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs: 0.5, 1, 5, 25, and 125 µM) and microparticles (ZnO MPs: 1, 5, 25, and 125 µM) on Carum copticum. The plant root/shoot biomass; number of leaves, branches, umbellates, and flowers; protein content; reducing sugars; phenolic compounds; chlorophylls (a, b, Total); carotenoids; anthocyanins; H2O2; proline; malondialdehyde (MDA); tissue zinc content; superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity; and media ΔpH were measured and considered input variables. All levels of ZnO MPs treatments increased growth parameters compared to the control (ZnSO4). The highest shoot/root fresh and dry mass were recorded at 5 µM ZnO MPs compared with the control. The root fresh/dry mass under ZnO NPs treatments was more sensitive than shoot parameters. The number of flowers increased by 134 and 79% in MPs and NPs treatments compared to the control, respectively. ZnO NPs reduced protein content by up to 81% in 125 µM NPs compared to ZnSO4. Reducing sugar content increased to 25, 40 and 36% in 5, 25, 125 µM MPs and 67, 68, 26, 26 and 21% in 0.5, 1, 5, 25 and 125 µM NPs treatments, respectively. The pH alteration was more significant under NPs and affected zinc uptake. All levels of ZnO NPs treatments increased growth parameters compared to the control. All ML algorithms showed varied efficiencies in predicting the nonlinear relationships among parameters, with higher efficiency in predicting the behavior of root and shoot dry mass, root fresh weight and number of flowers according to R2 index. Abstract\nNOVELTY STATEMENTIn this study, a composite of silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (AgNPs-TiO2NPs) was examined for its synergistic effects on phytostabilization of lead (Pb) and mitigation of toxicity in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp). Seeds of V. unguiculata were wetted with water, 0.05 and 0.1 mgL−1 Pb and 25 mgmL−1 each of AgNPs, TiO2NPs, and AgNPs-TiO2NPs. Root lengths of V. unguiculata were reduced by 25% and 44% at 0.05 and 0.1 mgL−1 Pb, respectively, while shoot lengths were reduced by 2% and 7%. In V. unguiculata, AgNPs and TiO2NPs significantly improved physiological indicators and mitigated Pb effects, with TiO2NPs modulating physiological parameters more effectively than AgNPs. The composite (AgNPs-TiO2NPs) synergistically regulated V. unguiculata physiology better than individual nanoparticles. Compared to individual AgNPs and TiO2NPs, the composite (AgNPs-TiO2NPs) synergistically increased antioxidant activity by 12% and 9%, and carotenoid contents by 88%. Additionally, AgNPs-TiO2NPs effectively reduced malondialdehyde levels by 29%, thereby mitigating the effects of Pb on V. unguiculata better than individual nanoparticles. AgNPs-TiO2NPs enhanced Pb immobilization by 57%, reducing its translocation from soil to shoots compared to V. unguiculata wetted with water. The bioconcentration and translocation factors of Pb indicate that phytostabilization was most effective when the composite was used.A synergetic interaction between silver nanoparticles and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (AgNPs-TiO2NPs) was investigated in this study for their capability to promote phytostabilization of Pb pollution in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp). In fish, the gill plays a vital role in regulating the absorption of trace metals and is also highly susceptible to metal toxicity. Trace metals such as iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn) are involved in various catalytic activities and molecular binding within the gill, thereby supporting a range of physiological processes in this organ. While beneficial at normal levels, these metals can become toxic when present in excess. Conversely, nonessential metals like cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) can gain entry into gill cells through similar metal transport pathways, potentially interfering with various cellular processes. The transepithelial transport of these metals across the gill epithelium is governed by a variety of metal transport and metal binding proteins. These include the Cu transporter 1 (CTR1), divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), and members of the Zrt-/Irt-like protein (ZIP) and zinc transport (ZnT) families. Additionally, some of these metals can compete with major ions (e.g., calcium, sodium) for absorption sites in the gill. This complex crosstalk suggests an interdependent mechanism that balances metal uptake to meet physiological needs while preventing excessive accumulation. In this article, I review the roles of trace metals in proteins/enzymes that support the different functions in the gill of teleost fish. I also discuss current understanding of the pathways involved in regulating the branchial uptake of metals and their influence on ionic regulation, and the potential detoxification mechanisms in the gill. Fly ash (FA) deposition originating from power stations and unprotected dumpsites, have been found to affect plant communities, potentially causing environmental degradation and food chain contamination. An analysis of plant composition, heavy metal concentration in plants and soil within 40 kilometers of the Morupule dumpsite was conducted to evaluate the impact of FA disposal. In addition, risks to the ruminants grazing in this area, were assessed. The windward transect had significantly higher species diversity and richness than the leeward transect, especially in areas closer to the dumpsite. This could be attributed to the inability of some plants to tolerate higher concentrations of toxic metal and alkalinity in areas near the dumpsite. In this study, average concentrations in plants of Cr (546.11 mg kg−1), Mn (905.69 mg kg−1), and Cu (128 mg kg−1) were above toxicity levels of 75-100 mg kg−1 for Cr, 400 mg kg−1 for Mn, and 100 mg kg−1 for Cu. Although the quantities of these metals were above the maximum allowable daily consumption, calculations of the daily plant intake by grazing animals in this area revealed a potential danger of exposure to Cr and Cu. Particularly in areas that were nearest to the FA dumpsite, ruminants grazing on the leeward transect were more exposed to Cu than Cr toxicity. Overall, it was found that FA deposition damaged the plant community and put grazing ruminants at greater danger. However, more investigation is required to pinpoint the precise level of hazardous metals found in the grazing animals in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the latest years, the concentration levels of certain metals and metalloids in the sediments of the Galician Rías have shown an increasing trend (e.g., As, Zn, Cu, Pb, Hg). These areas are also characterized by their richness in nutrients and their great aquaculture or mariculture activity, with the presence of more than 3500 mussel rafts in the Rías Baixas. The inner areas of the Galician Rías are subjected to activities that resuspend the sediment such as high levels of maritime traffic and dredging or cleaning operations. It is likely that a transfer of these elements to the water column happens during the resuspension of sediments caused by natural events or anthropogenic activities. In this study, selected samples of surface sediments of the Ría de Pontevedra (NW Spain) were subjected to a procedure of aerobic oxidation to determine the concentration of some elements (Fe, Mn, Cu, Cr, Pb, Hg, and Zn) released from the sediment to the aqueous phase. The experiment was carried out within 5 days. Measurements of pH and total concentration were taken both in water and sediment samples. Furthermore, speciation of trace elements was carried out in the sediment samples. Trace element concentrations were lower in the sediments during aerobic oxidation, being released to the aqueous phase. From an environmental point of view, Cu was the only trace element released in quantities that may be toxic for the organisms in the area. This problem of sediment oxidation related to dredging activities or natural storm conditions should be considered in environmental impact studies and transferred to stakeholders. Background: The global market for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is growing exponentially, resulting in an increase in mining activities for the metals needed for manufacturing LIBs. Cobalt, lithium, manganese, and nickel are four of the metals most used in the construction of LIBs, and each has known toxicological risks associated with exposure. Mining for these metals poses potential human health risks via occupational and environmental exposures; however, there is a paucity of data surrounding the risks of increasing mining activity. The objective of this review was to characterize these risks. Methods: We conducted a review of the literature via a systematic search of the PubMed database on the health effects of mining for cobalt, lithium, manganese, and nickel. We included articles that (1) reported original research, (2) reported outcomes directly related to human health, (3) assessed exposure to mining for cobalt, lithium, manganese, or nickel, and (4) had an available English translation. We excluded all other articles. Our search identified 183 relevant articles. Results: Toxicological hazards were reported in 110 studies. Exposure to cobalt and nickel mining were most associated with respiratory toxicity, while exposure to manganese mining was most associated with neurologic toxicity. Notably, no articles were identified that assessed lithium toxicity associated with mining exposure. Traumatic hazards were reported in six studies. Three articles reported infectious disease hazards, while six studies reported effects on mental health. Several studies reported increased health risks in children compared to adults. Conclusions: The results of this review suggest that occupational and environmental exposure to mining metals used in LIBs presents significant risks to human health that result in both acute and chronic toxicities. Objective: To determine the frequency with which suspected pathogenic factors, including metals and metabolites that might contribute to Alzheimer's disease (AD), may be found in patients with cognitive impairment through commonly available blood tests. Methods: A variety of serum studies, including metals, ammonia, homocysteine, vitamin B12, folate, thyroid tests, metabolic products, and inflammatory markers, were measured in two cohorts: one meeting mild cognitive impairment (MCI) criteria and the other meeting mild-to-moderate dementia (DE) criteria. Medications these patients received were reviewed. Results: Metal abnormalities were detected in over half the subjects, including evidence of mercury, lead, and arsenic elevation as well as instances of excessive essential metals, iron (Fe), and copper. Some metal aberration was detected in 64% of the DE group and 66% of the MCI group. Females were more likely to have elevated copper, consistent with hormonal effects on copper excretion. Homocysteinemia was the most common abnormality, detected in 71% with DE and 67% with MCI, while methylmalonic acid was not elevated. Slight hyperammonemia was moderately common (38%) suggesting a hepatic factor in this subset. Findings of moderate insulin resistance were present in nearly half (44% DE, 52% MCI). Sixty of 65 (92%) had at least one abnormal biomarker and 60% had two or more. The most common drug taken by the total cohort was proton pump inhibitors at 22% DE and 38% MCI. Conclusions: This study suggests that both toxic metals and excessive vital metals such as copper and iron, as well as common metabolic and hepatic factors are detectable at both stages of MCI and DE. There appears to be a multiplicity of provocative factors leading to DE. Individualized interventions based on these parameters may be a means to reduce cognitive decline leading to DE. A more comprehensive prospective study of these environmental and metabolic factors with corrective early interventions appears warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biochar and nanoparticles (NPs) are potential strategies for increasing plant yield and minimizing the negative effects of toxic metals on sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum L). The current study aims to reduce the access of toxic elements to the oil extracted from basil plants growing in polluted soils by biochar and NPS of silicon (Si) and boron (B). Sweet basil plants were grown in contaminated soil that contained cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) at concentrations of 58 and 800 mg kg−1, respectively. The experiment included two doses of biochar (0 and 1%, w/w) and four foliar combinations of Si and B nanoparticles at the dose of 100 mg L−1 of Si and/or B. Cd and Pb availability were reduced by 44 and 48%, respectively, compared to the control. The soil pH raised significantly (p < 0.05) as a result of biochar addition. Furthermore, biochar addition at the dose of 1%, (w/w) caused a 14% increase in the soil organic matter. The highest growth parameters of basil plants were obtained from the biochar treatment with Si + B NPs foliar application. The treatment that was amended with biochar and sprayed with Si + B showed the greatest significant values of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and calcium (Ca) content in basil plants. The chlorophyll content of basil leaves rose along with the synthesis of proline and soluble carbohydrates after the addition of biochar to the polluted soil and Si + B spraying. Biochar minimized Cd in the leaf and oil by 48 and 49%, respectively, compared to the control, while Pb concentrations were reduced by 29 and 49%, respectively. The oil extracted from the basil plants grown in the soil amended with biochar contained 50–52 and 23–26 μg kg−1 of Cd and Pb, respectively. Adding biochar to the contaminated soil increases the oil yield of sweet basil and reduces its content of toxic elements, while spraying the basil plant with silicon and boron nanoparticles increases the plant's resistance to metal toxicity. Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) with polyneuropathy (formerly known as Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (FAP)) is an endemic amyloidosis involving the harmful aggregation of proteins, most commonly transthyretin (TTR) but sometimes also apolipoprotein A-1 or gelsolin. hATTR appears to be transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait. Over 100 point mutations have been identified, with the Val30Met substitution being the most common. Yet, the mechanism of pathogenesis and the overall origin of hATTR remain unclear. Here, we argue that hATTR could be related to harmful metal exposure. hATTR incidence is unevenly distributed globally, and the three largest defined clusters exist in Japan, Portugal, and Sweden. All three disease regions are also ancient mining districts with associated metal contamination of the local environment. There are two main mechanisms for how harmful metals, after uptake into tissues and body fluids, could induce hATTR. First, the metals could directly influence the expression, function, and/or aggregation of the proteins involved in hATTR pathology. Such metal–protein interactions might constitute molecular targets for anti-hATTR drug design. Second, metal exposure could induce hATTR -associated genetic mutations, which may have happened several generations ago. These two mechanisms can occur in parallel. In conclusion, the possibility that hATTR could be related to metal exposure in geochemically defined regions deserves further attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zinc is an essential micronutrient for all living organisms. When challenged by zinc‐limiting conditions, Arabidopsis thaliana plants use a strategy centered on two transcription factors, bZIP19 and bZIP23, to enhance the expression of several zinc transporters to improve their zinc uptake capacity. In the zinc and cadmium hyperaccumulator plant Arabidopsis halleri, highly efficient root‐to‐shoot zinc translocation results in constitutive local zinc deficiency in roots and in constitutive high expression of zinc deficiency‐responsive ZIP genes, supposedly boosting zinc uptake and accumulation. Here, to disrupt this process and to analyze the functions of AhbZIP19, AhbZIP23 and their target genes in hyperaccumulation, the genes encoding both transcriptional factors were knocked down using artificial microRNAs (amiRNA). Although AhbZIP19, AhbZIP23, and their ZIP target genes were downregulated, amiRNA lines surprisingly accumulated more zinc and cadmium compared to control lines in both roots and shoot driving to shoot toxicity symptoms. These observations suggested the existence of a substitute metal uptake machinery in A. halleri to maintain hyperaccumulation. We propose that the iron uptake transporter AhIRT1 participates in this alternative pathway in A. halleri. Cesium (Cs) toxicity has deleterious effects on plant growth and development. However, the molecular mechanism of the toxic effect of Cs on plants has been poorly understood. To obtain insights into the molecular events occurring in plants under Cs stress, we performed a comparative transcriptomic analysis between control and Cs-treated plants via RNA-seq. We identified 183 differentially expressed genes (141 upregulated and 42 downregulated) under Cs stress (1.5 mM CsCl). Gene ontology (GO) analysis using differentially expressed genes in Cs stress indicated that Cs triggered plant stress signaling pathways like reactive oxygen species (i.e., hydrogen peroxide). Further KEGG and MapMan metabolic pathway analyses revealed that many abiotic/biotic stress signaling pathways were highly induced. In particular, heat shock protein family genes were substantially induced upon exposure to Cs stress. We investigated the root growth of several knockout mutants of heat shock protein family genes and found that heat stress response was compromised in these mutants compared to wild type plants. It suggested that heat shock protein genes including HSP17s, HSP23s, HSP101, and HSFA2 proteins are deployed upon exposure to Cs for plant stress tolerance. Metals are dispersed in natural environments, particularly in the aquatic environment, and accumulate, causing adverse effects on aquatic life. Moreover, chronic polymetallic water pollution is a common problem, and the biological effects of exposure to complex mixtures of metals are the most difficult to interpret. In this review, metal toxicity is examined with a focus on its impact on energy metabolism. Mechanisms regulating adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production and reactive oxygen species (ROS) emission are considered in their dual roles in the development of cytotoxicity and cytoprotection, and mitochondria may become target organelles of metal toxicity when the transmembrane potential is reduced below its phosphorylation level. One of the main consequences of metal toxicity is additional energy costs, and the metabolic load can lead to the disruption of oxidative metabolism and enhanced anaerobiosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ASTM International standard test method for freshwater mussels (E2455‐13) recommends 4‐week toxicity testing with juveniles to evaluate chronic effects on survival and growth. However, concerns remain that the method may not adequately address the sensitivity of mussels to longer term exposures (>4 weeks), particularly in relation to potential reproductive impairments. No standard method directly evaluates toxicant effects on mussel reproduction. The objectives of the present study were to (1) evaluate toxicity endpoints related to reproduction in fatmucket (Lampsilis siliquoidea) using two common reference toxicants, potassium chloride (KCl) and nickel (Ni); (2) evaluate the survival and growth of juvenile fatmucket in standard 4‐week and longer term (12‐week) KCl and Ni tests following a method refined from the standard method; and (3) compare the sensitivity of the reproductive endpoints with the endpoints obtained from the juvenile mussel tests. Reproductive toxicity tests were conducted by first exposing female fatmucket brooding mature larvae (glochidia) to five test concentrations of KCl and Ni for 6 weeks. Subsamples of the glochidia were then removed from the adults to determine three reproductive endpoints: (1) the viability of brooded glochidia; (2) the viability of free glochidia in a 24‐h exposure to the same toxicant concentrations as their mother; and (3) the success of glochidia parasitism on host fish. Mean viability of brooded glochidia was significantly reduced in the high KCl concentration (26 mg K/L) relative to the control, with a 20% effect concentration (EC20) of 14 mg K/L, but there were no significant differences between the control and any Ni treatment (EC20 > 95 µg Ni/L). The EC20s for viability of free glochidia after the additional 24‐h exposure and parasitism success were similar to the EC20s of brooded glochidia. The EC20s based on the most sensitive biomass endpoint in the 4‐week juvenile tests were 15 mg K/L and 91 µg Ni/L, similar to or greater than the EC20s from the reproductive KCl and Ni tests, respectively. When exposure duration in the juvenile tests was extended from 4 to 12 weeks, the EC20s decreased by more than 50% in the KCl test but by only 8% in the Ni test. Overall, these results indicate that a standard 4‐week test with juvenile mussels can prove effective for estimating effects in chronic exposures with different life stages although a longer term 12‐week exposure with juvenile mussels may reveal higher sensitivity of mussels to some toxicants, such as KCl. Faced with unpredictable changes in global weather patterns, release and redistribution of metals through land erosion and water movements add to the increasing use of metals in industrial activities causing high levels of environmental pollution and concern to the health of all living organisms. Cadmium is released into the environment by smelting and mining, entering the food chain via contaminated soils, water, and phosphate fertilizers. Bioaccumulation of cadmium in plants represents the first major step into the human food chain and contributes to toxicity of several organs, especially the kidneys, where biomagnification of cadmium occurs over decades of exposure. Even in small amounts, cadmium brings about alterations at the molecular and cellular levels in eukaryotes through mutagenicity, molecular mimicry at metal binding sites and oxidative stress. The epigenome dictates expression of a gene’s output through a number of regulatory steps involving chromatin remodeling, nucleosome unwinding, DNA accessibility, or nucleic acid modifications that ultimately impact the transcriptional and translational machinery. Several epigenetic enzymes exhibit zinc-dependence as zinc metalloenzymes and zinc finger proteins thus making them susceptible to deregulation through displacement by cadmium. In this review, we summarize the literature on cadmium-induced epigenetic mechanisms in mammalian kidneys and plants, compare similarities in the epigenetic defense between these bioaccumulators, and explore how future studies could advance our understanding of the cadmium-induced stress response and disruption to biological health.

This study aimed to investigate the applicability of phytoremediation in agricultural practices. Specifically, to evaluate the impact of five soil amendments (chicken manure, sewage sludge, leaf compost, cow manure, and vermicompost) on three cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) varieties (Capture, Primo vantage, and Tiara) yield, quality, and the accumulation of Cd, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn in cabbage heads. The bioaccumulation efficiency of cabbage was determined using an inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). Analysis revealed that soil enriched with chicken manure exhibited the highest cabbage yield. Each cabbage variety demonstrated very high bioaccumulation factor (BAF) indicating substantial heavy metal accumulation. These findings underscore the potential of utilizing crops for phytoremediation to mitigate heavy metal pollution. Additionally, the concentrations of metals below the permissible limits suggest that employing crops for phytoremediation can simultaneously ensure food productivity. This study emphasizes the necessity for further research into the use of crops for remediation strategies.

Infant formula milk (IFM) is increasingly utilized as a substitute for natural breastfeeding despite the fact that breast milk has been always recognized as the optimal nourishment method. While IFMs are fortified with essential nutrients that are crucial for proper growth, they can also harbor non-essential toxic metal contaminants from various sources during the production process. Given the heightened vulnerability of newborns to such contaminants, it is imperative to thoroughly analyze, evaluate, and minimize the toxicity associated with the consumption of such IFMs. However, classical approaches to date, have been always adopted for assessing such risks by finding first the analytical concentration of metals in the IFMs followed by multiplying it by the average daily powder intake (ADI) then dividing by the average infant weight. The outcome is then compared to an established standard such a PTWI to assess the extent of toxicity. The drawback with such studies is the use of a fixed ADI for all samples as if all samples have the same and exact preparation directions while using somewhat different infant masses.Accordingly, this study aims at assessing the toxic risk amongst newborns from IFM consumption through the identification and application of various highly important and toxicity-contributing parameters from each IFM and its directions of preparation label separately which are discussed here for the first time while providing comparisons between the classical approach versus our new approach to highlight its importance.Seventy-three IFMs (0–6 months) were analyzed for lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and aluminum (Al) levels and unlike previous studies, this work incorporated various feeding parameters from each IFM for calculating the intakes thus, revealing potential toxicity risks even in IFMs that are considered safe by the classical approach. Metal contamination was significant, with 97.3 % of samples containing detectable Pb, 41.1 % Cd, 16.4 % As, and 93.2 % Al while highlighting Pb in exceeding its maximum allowable level (MAL). This novel approach, which considers new diverse feeding schedules/parameters that are ironically suggested by manufacturers that have been previously overlooked elsewhere, emphasized IFMs' potential as sources of heightened metal toxicity in comparison to classical approaches. Results highlighted Pb and Al as major concerns, with As and Cd of lesser concern. Findings also emphasized the importance of such new parameters for safeguarding newborn health and should be payed attention to by caregivers. The study strongly and highly recommends adherence to minimum feeding schedules (MFS) and proper scooping techniques to reduce newborn exposure to toxic metals. It also suggests continuous monitoring and stricter regulations by health authorities at the production level of such products so as to provide a safer commodity in the first degree and to also provide better and somewhat uniform and specific feeding labels and precautions on such products.

Objectives: the controlled release of silver as a biocide from Ag-coated medical implants is desirable. However, the biocompatibility of Ag leachates is poorly understood. This study investigated the toxicity of silver released from the silver plated titanium implants to human primary osteoblast cells; and the effect of cell culture medium on the silver speciation and bioavailability. Methods: Ti6Al4V discs were coated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs), silver plus hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles (Ag+nHA), or Ag NPs plus microparticles (Ag+mHA). Primary human osteoblast cells were exposed to the leachates from the various discs for up to 7 days. Results: the total Ag concentrations released as leachate from the silver-plated titanium discs were 0.7–1.6 mg L−1, regardless of treatment. Cumulative silver release over 7 days was approximately 3 mg L−1 in all treatments. The concentration of total Ag in the cell homogenates from all the Ag-containing treatments was modest, ∼ 0.1 µg mg protein−1 or less at day 7. Cells showed normal healthy morphology with no appreciable leak of LDH or ALP activity into the external media compared to the reference control. Similarly, there was no significant differences (Kruskal Wallis, p > 0.05) in the LDH or ALP activity in the cell homogenate between treatments. Conclusions: overall, there was a controlled release of Ag into the external media, but this remained biocompatible with no deleterious effects on the osteoblast cells, which means that the released silver to the peri-implant environment is not toxic making the coating potential for clinical use

This study represents a crucial first step in developing a profound understanding of the existence and nature of ambient air quality in auto-repair garages (ARGs). In this study, comprehensive monitoring of PM10, PM2.5, NOX, and SO2 levels was performed in ARG. To gain comprehensive insights into their elemental composition, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy was performed on PM10 and PM2.5 filters and 20 elements were identified (transition metals: Ag, Cd, Cr, Cr-VI, Cu, Fe, Mo, Mn, Ni; post-transition metals: Al, Hg, Pb, Sn, Zn; metalloids: As, B, Sb; alkaline earth metals: Ba and Na; reactive non-metal: Se) in ARG. The maximum measured concentration for PM10 was 235.42 µg m−3, while for PM2.5, it peaked at 80.42 µg m−3, underscoring the severity of PM exposure from ARG workers. Elemental analysis revealed that elements bound to PM10 and PM2.5 contain significant proportions of Al (15–17%), B (24–28%), Ba (32%), Fe (2–4%), and Zn (23%). However, the transition metals exhibited higher concentration compared to post-transition metals, alkaline earth metals, reactive non-metals and metalloids. An integrated risk assessment was carried out to assess the potential risks of exposure to these pollutants. The combined carcinogenic risks (ECRs) for As, Cd, Cr (VI), Ni, and Pb in PM10 and PM2.5-bound heavy metals were 2.99 × 10–4 and 6.94 × 10–4, respectively, suggesting potential cancer incidence of 3–7 cases per 10,000 people due to exposure to toxic heavy metals in ARG's PM-bound elements indicating significant concerns to ARG workers. Heavy metal pollution represents a global health issue. Different methods and technologies are adopted to mitigate the problem of heavy metal pollution. Phytoremediation has been gaining attention as an environmentally friendly method to remediate this problem. The purpose of this research is to explore the effectiveness of phytoremediation in agricultural settings to assess the effect of five soil management practices (chicken manure, sewage sludge, leaf compost, cow manure, and vermicompost) on Cd, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, and Zn accumulation in the mustard (leaves and pods) of three mustard Brassica juncea varieties (black mustard, yellow mustard, and mighty mustard). The accumulation in mustard was quantified using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results showed that the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) of the three mustard varieties exceeded one (BAF > 1) for Cd and Mo. It indicates that mustard is a good accumulator of Cd and Mo, whereas BAF values for Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn were less than one (BAF < 1). The accumulated Cu, Mo, Ni, and Zn levels were below the allowable limit, whereas the Cd and Pb levels were beyond the limit. This result indicates that the investigated mustard varieties can be grown on heavy metal polluted sites for Cd and Mo phytoremediation purposes, but care is needed with regard to Cd and Mo toxicity. Accurate prediction of cadmium (Cd) ecotoxicity to and accumulation in soil biota is important in soil health. However, very limited information on Cd ecotoxicity on naturally contaminated soils. Herein, we investigated soil Cd ecotoxicity using Folsomia candida, a standard single-species test animal, in 28 naturally Cd-contaminated soils, and the back-propagation neural network (BPNN) model was used to predict Cd ecotoxicity to and accumulation in F. candida. Soil total Cd and pH were the primary soil properties affecting Cd toxicity. However, soil pH was the main factor when the total Cd concentration was < 3 mg kg−1. Interestingly, correlation analysis and the K-spiked test confirmed nutrient potassium (K) was essential for Cd accumulation, highlighting the significance of studying K in Cd accumulation. The BPNN model showed greater prediction accuracy of collembolan survival rate (R2 = 0.797), reproduction inhibitory rate (R2 = 0.827), body Cd concentration (R2 = 0.961), and Cd bioaccumulation factor (R2 = 0.964) than multiple linear regression models. Then the developed BPNN model was used to predict Cd ecological risks in 57 soils in southern China. Compared to multiple linear regression models, the BPNN models can better identify high-risk regions. After tattoo application, inks remain in the skin, mostly in the dermal layer, and manufacturers use inks that have not been adequately evaluated for safety in tattoo production. In this study, the metal contents (Cd, Hg, Pb, and Cr) of tattoo inks available in the Turkish market were determined and the relationship between cell viability and inflammatory response of the detected metal levels was investigated. Nine tattoo inks (3 colors) from 3 different brands abbreviated as E, I, and W were examined. ICP-MS was used for element analysis. The viability of human keratinocyte cells was determined by the WST-1 assay following ink exposures at various dilutions. IL-18 levels were measured in cell culture supernatant by ELISA method following ink or metal (Cd, Cr, Hg, and Pb) exposures. The concentrations of trace elements were found in inks as follows: Cd, 0.0641–1.3857; Hg, 0.0204–0.2675; Pb, 0.8527–6.5981; Cr, 0.1731–45.3962 µg mL−1. It was observed that the levels of Pb and especially Cr in the samples exceeded the limit values. Tattoo inks reduced the cell viability in a dose- and color-dependent manner. IL-18 release was significantly increased in all groups except Cr and black ink of brand I treated cells (p < 0.05). Our results show that the metal contents of tattoo inks exceed Council of Europe Resolution values in some samples and some inks induce immune system activation (IL-18 secretion) and cytotoxic effects. Metal bioavailability in solution is mostly driven by two factors: complexation and competition. The first factor, complexation, contributes to decrease the overall reactivity of the metal by reducing the activity of the free metal ion, which is known as the common denominator of metal reactions involving either dissolved ligands or surface functional groups (abiotic or biotic). Ubiquitous in natural ecosystems, natural organic matter is, for several metals, the most important metal complexing ligand. The second factor, competition, contributes to decrease the availability of biotic ligands involved in the membrane transport of metals from the bulk solution to the intracellular medium. In freshwater systems, proton and hardness cation concentrations are the main parameters potentially modulating metal bioavailability. The above reflects the current accepted paradigm. In this paper, two knowledge gaps are identified: i) the role of natural organic matter other than metal complexation that may lead to an increase in metal bioavailability; and ii) the effects of multiple metals other than competition that may trigger biological feedback mechanisms which may, in turn, alter biotic ligand binding properties. The escalating challenges posed by metal(loid) toxicity in agricultural ecosystems, exacerbated by rapid climate change and anthropogenic pressures, demand urgent attention. Soil contamination is a critical issue because it significantly impacts crop productivity. The widespread threat of metal(loid) toxicity can jeopardize global food security due to contaminated food supplies and pose environmental risks, contributing to soil and water pollution and thus impacting the whole ecosystem. In this context, plants have evolved complex mechanisms to combat metal(loid) stress. Amid the array of innovative approaches, omics, notably transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, have emerged as transformative tools, shedding light on the genes, proteins, and key metabolites involved in metal(loid) stress responses and tolerance mechanisms. These identified candidates hold promise for developing high-yielding crops with desirable agronomic traits. Computational biology tools like bioinformatics, biological databases, and analytical pipelines support these omics approaches by harnessing diverse information and facilitating the mapping of genotype-to-phenotype relationships under stress conditions. This review explores: (1) the multifaceted strategies that plants use to adapt to metal(loid) toxicity in their environment; (2) the latest findings in metal(loid)-mediated transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics studies across various plant species; (3) the integration of omics data with artificial intelligence and high-throughput phenotyping; (4) the latest bioinformatics databases, tools and pipelines for single and/or multi-omics data integration; (5) the latest insights into stress adaptations and tolerance mechanisms for future outlooks; and (6) the capacity of omics advances for creating sustainable and resilient crop plants that can thrive in metal(loid)-contaminated environments. Non-industrial wood ash may be an effective forest soil nutrient supplement but its use in Canada is largely restricted because of unknown concentrations of trace metal contaminants. Sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marshall) is particularly sensitive to low soil calcium (Ca) levels, and though maple syrup is of great economic importance in Canada, it is unknown how wood ash could affect sap chemistry. Non-industrial wood ash (NIWA; 6 Mg·ha−1) applied to experimental plots in Muskoka, Ontario was rich in Ca (27%), while metal concentrations were well below provincial regulatory limits. One-year post-application, significant increases were observed in the treated plots in the soil pH and base cations (Ca, K, and Mg) in the surface soil horizons, and metal concentrations in the litter. Sap yield in the control plots was significantly lower in the first-year post-application than in the second year, but no other differences were found. In both tapping years, sap sweetness remained similar and differences in nutrient and metal concentrations between treatments were generally small and inconsistent. Foliar chemistry remained largely unchanged 1 year following application, except for K that was twice as high in the treated plots. Ultimately, NIWA is unlikely to significantly alter sugar maple sap chemistry, indicating that it is a viable nutrient supplement that can enhance soil fertility in sugar bushes with no impact on sap sweetness. Despite being a non-essential metal in the body, we acquire aluminium via various sources such as aluminium cookware, foil, medicines, cosmetics, food, water, and aluminium-industries. Though it can be eliminated from our body, the excess and cumulative effect can't be ignored. Aluminium load above the threshold causes several diseases like Alzheimer's, osteomalacia, anaemia, and cancer. Hence, the current study was designed to explore the frequency of aluminium usage in various forms in the Indian population of northwest rural and urban regions of Maharashtra and investigate any preferential difference in aluminium usage with occupation, education, income, and family structure. It is a correlational study designed to check the extent of aluminium involvement in their lives and their perception of awareness. A non-random sampling method using social media was utilized for data collection, and data were analyzed using a statistical tool, Jamovi. A survey-based analysis of the responses to a pre-designed questionnaire was done. The prominent factor contributing to the aluminium load was found to be the aluminium vessel used in our kitchen. Boiling, storing, and baking edible items facilitate its leaching into food to toxic levels. Further analysis revealed a significant correlation of financial and educational status with aluminium usage. Reducing aluminium vessel usage for cooking can significantly reduce aluminium load in our bodies. However, we still need to be vigilant about the aluminium load which the other products are imparting upon us. Toxic exposures to heavy metals, such as iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn), can result in long-range neurological diseases and are therefore of significant environmental and medical concerns. We have previously reported that damage to neuroblastoma-derived dopaminergic cells (SH-SY5Y) by both Fe and Mn could be prevented by pre-treatment with nicotine. Moreover, butyrate, a short chain fatty acid (SCFA) provided protection against salsolinol, a selective dopaminergic toxin, in the same cell line. Here, we broadened the investigation to determine whether butyrate might also protect against Fe and/or Mn, and whether, if combined with nicotine, an additive or synergistic effect might be observed. Both butyrate and nicotine concentration-dependently blocked Fe and Mn toxicities. Ineffective concentrations of nicotine and butyrate, when combined, provided full protection against both Fe and Mn. Moreover, the effects of nicotine but not butyrate could be blocked by mecamylamine, a non-selective nicotinic antagonist. On the other hand, the effects of butyrate, but not nicotine, could be blocked by beta-hydroxy butyrate, a fatty acid-3 receptor antagonist. These results not only provide further support for neuroprotective effects of both nicotine and butyrate but also indicate distinct mechanisms of action for each one. Fish is an affordable protein source in developing countries such as Nigeria, however, human activities like mining, agriculture, and industrial discharges negatively impact these aquatic resources and their environment. Heavy metals leach into the ocean and accumulate in fish, potentially causing health issues for those who consume them. The present study evaluated the heavy metal concentrations in five commercially important and highly consumed fish species (Clupea pallasii, Merluccius productus, Gadus chalcogrammus, Scomber scombrus, Trachurus murphyi) in Nigeria. The study was conducted between August 2021 to January 2022, and Mn, Fe, Zn, Pb, Cd levels were sampled in a total of 50 fish using the AA 240 Fanst Sequential Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer and expressed as mg/kg wet weight. Among the heavy metals estimated in all fish samples, Mn was the most prevalent, while Zn was relatively the lowest. Pb (6.39 mg/kg), Cd (1.39 mg/kg), and Fe (5.59 mg/kg) concentrations exceeded the FAO and WHO regulatory limits and may be deleterious to human health. Therefore, while essential as a protein source, the presence of heavy metals exceeding recommended limits in these commonly consumed imported fish species raises public health concerns. Plants adjust their developmental processes for their survival against changing environments. Plant development is adversely affected by arsenic (As) contamination. In order to mitigate As toxicity, the effect of silicon (Si) (as silicic acid) and nitric oxide (NO) (as sodium nitroprusside; SNP) was observed on 7 days old radish (Raphanus sativus L.) seedlings under 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 mM As concentrations. Plant growth traits, oxidative stress, carbohydrates, protein, antioxidants and osmolytes were measured. Arsenic stress inhibited the growth parameters and caused oxidative damage by elevating the level of oxidative stress markers and by causing membrane and nuclear damage, as shown by histochemical studies. Activities of antioxidative enzymes, content of non-enzymatic antioxidants, and levels of osmolytes were also decreased by As stress. However, Si and NO supplementation enhanced the As tolerance by improving the plant growth parameters. Moreover, Si and NO application improved carbohydrates and protein contents and stimulated plant antioxidant defense systems by decreasing the level of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide and by diminishing the membrane and nuclear damage caused by As. An increase in the osmolytes levels were observed by the application of Si and NO. Fourier transform infrared analysis showed that Si and NO exerted various peaks in different lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and cell wall component regions. This study suggests that Si and NO can help mitigating As-induced toxicity in R. sativus seedlings and augment growth.

French bean is (Phaseolus vulgaris) widely grown legume worldwide and is the most important pulse crop in the Indian subcontinent. The productivity is adversely affected by a large number of biotic and abiotic stresses. Micro RNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated in the regulation of plant responses to several biotic and abiotic stresses. Boron (B) toxicity is a significant limitation to cereal crop production worldwide. In this study, RT-qPCR confirmed seven miRNAs were responsive to boron toxicity. The known predicted targets and their functional analysis revealed that most of the targets represent transcription factors. GO results supported our hypothesis that miRNAs were found to be involved in diverse cellular processes, including plant circadian cycle, vegetative development, transcription, and cross adaptation. The results obtained would provide new insights to the complex regulatory mechanism employing small non-coding regulatory RNAs toward stress adaptation.

Background: Wheat as one of the agricultural products cultivated in many parts of the world is an essential component of our diet in the world. This study aimed to evaluate heavy metals in wheat farms in the north of Ahvaz.Methods: This research was conducted in two areas of Weiss and Arab Assad located in the north of Ahvaz City. Twelve samples of wheat plants in each area were randomly selected from all the farms during harvesting. Chemical digestion was performed by a wet method, and heavy metals were measured by ICP model Varian 710-ES.Results: The highest volume of heavy metals in Weiss and Arab Assad regions were 58.17 and 58.42 mg/Kg, respectively. Among the heavy metals, the lowest concentration was related to chromium which was equal to 1.07 and 1.14 mg/Kg in Weiss and Arab Assad farms, respectively. The highest hazard quotient (HQ) of heavy metals in children was related to manganese metal (13.51). The lowest value of heavy metal’s HQ in the people was obtained in cobalt (0.21).Conclusion: According to the results, because of the manganese metal, it seems that wheat consumption is dangerous for health in different age groups. In general, the results of health risk assessment of heavy metal in wheat showed that the consumption of this product can have an acute adverse impact on human health.

The paradigm of using metal biomaterials could be viewed from two sides — treatment of wide spectrum of degenerative diseases, and debris release from materials. After implant insertion, metal nanoparticles (NPs) and ions are released not only upon the first contact with cells/tissues, but in continual manner, which is immediately recognized by immune cells. In this work, the effects of metal nanoparticles (TiO2, Ni) and ions (Ni2+, Co2+, Cr3+, Mo6+) on primary human M0 macrophages from the blood samples of osteoarthritic patients undergoing total arthroplasty were studied in order to monitor immunomodulatory effects on the cells in a real-time format. The highest NiNPs concentration of 10 µg/ml had no effect on any of macrophage parameters, while the Ni2+ ions cytotoxicity limit for the cells is 0.5 mM. The cytotoxic effects of higher Ni2+ concentration revealed mitochondrial network fragmentation leading to mitochondrial dysfunction, accompanied by increased lysosomal activity and changes in pro-apoptotic markers. The suppression of M2 cell formation ability was connected to presence of Ni2+ ions (0.5 mM) and TiO2NPs (10 µg/ml). The immunomodulatory effect of Mo6+ ions, controversially, inhibit the formation of the cells with M1 phenotype and potentiate the thread-like shape M2s with increased chaotic cell movement. To summarize, metal toxicity depends on the debris form. Both, metal ions and nanoparticles affect macrophage size, morphological and functional parameters, but the effect of ions is more complex and likely more harmful, which has potential impact on healing and determines post-implantation reactions. The mechanisms of acute (96‐hour) and subchronic (28‐day) toxicity of the waterborne trace metal thallium (Tl) to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. Specifically, effects on branchial and renal ionoregulatory enzymes (sodium/potassium adenosine triphosphatase [ATPase; NKA] and proton ATPase) and hepatic oxidative stress endpoints (protein carbonylation, glutathione content, and activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase) were examined. Fish (19–55 g) were acutely exposed to 0 (control), 0.9 (regulatory limit), 2004 (half the acute median lethal concentration), or 4200 (acute median lethal concentration) µg Tl L–1 or subchronically exposed to 0, 0.9, or 141 (an elevated environmental concentration) µg Tl L–1. The only effect following acute exposure was a stimulation of renal H+‐ATPase activity at the highest Tl exposure concentration. Similarly, the only significant effect of subchronic Tl exposure was an inhibition of branchial NKA activity at 141 µg Tl L–1, an effect that may reflect the interaction of Tl with potassium ion handling. Despite significant literature evidence for effects of Tl on oxidative stress, there were no effects of Tl on any such endpoint in rainbow trout, regardless of exposure duration or exposure concentration. Elevated basal levels of antioxidant defenses may explain this finding. These data suggest that ionoregulatory perturbance is a more likely mechanism of Tl toxicity than oxidative stress in rainbow trout but is an endpoint of relevance only at elevated environmental Tl concentrations. Five metal mixture dose–response models were used to predict the toxicity of porewater to young sturgeon at areas of interest in the Upper Columbia River (WA, USA/BC, Canada) and to evaluate these models as tools for risk assessments. Dose components of metal mixture models included exposure to free metal ion activities or metal accumulation by biotic ligands or humic acid, and links of dose to response used logistic equations, independent joint action equations, or additive toxicity functions. Laboratory bioassay studies of single metal exposures to juvenile sturgeon, porewater collected in situ in the fast‐flowing Upper Columbia River, and metal mixture models were used to evaluate toxicity. The five metal mixture models were very similar in their predictions of adverse response of juvenile sturgeon and in identifying copper (Cu) as the metal responsible for the most toxic conditions. Although the modes of toxic action and the 20% effective concentration values were different among the dose models, predictions of adverse response were consistent among models because all doses were tied to the same biological responses. All models indicated that 56% ± 5% of 122 porewater samples were predicted to have <20% adverse response, 25% ± 5% of samples were predicted to have 20% to 80% adverse response, and 20% ± 4% were predicted to have >80% adverse response in juvenile sturgeon. The approach of combining bioassay toxicity data, compositions of field porewater, and metal mixture models to predict lack of growth and survival of aquatic organisms due to metal toxicity is an important tool that can be integrated with other information (e.g., survey studies of organism populations, life cycle and behavior characteristics, sediment geochemistry, and food sources) to assess risks to aquatic organisms in metal‐enriched ecosystems. Cell growth inhibition is generally handled as a measure of toxicity. Shortly, more toxicity implies more growth inhibition. Then, the question arises; How to calculate & evaluate cell growth inhibition in a universal manner? Actually, the method for calculating growth inhibition is not considered to be a central issue, in general. There are various approaches (subtractive, divisionary, and logarithmic) for calculating cell growth. Among these approaches, two of them are highly easy and popular, subtraction-based and division-based calculations. However, these two methods for the calculation of cell growth do not strongly reflect the nature of cell growth. Alternatively, the use of a doubling number-based formulation can provide a better approach and performance in the evaluation of cell growth and cell growth inhibition unless the culture attains the confluent status. In the realm of Alzheimer’s disease, the most prevalent form of dementia, the impact of environmental factors has ignited intense curiosity due to its substantial burden on global health. Recent investigations have unveiled these environmental factors as key contributors, shedding new light on their profound influence. Notably, emerging evidence highlights the detrimental role of various environmental contaminants in the incidence and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. These contaminants encompass a broad spectrum, including air pollutants laden with ozone, neurotoxic metals like lead, aluminum, manganese, and cadmium, pesticides with their insidious effects, and the ubiquitous presence of plastics and microplastics. By meticulously delving into the intricate web connecting environmental pollutants and this devastating neurological disorder, this comprehensive chapter takes a deep dive into their involvement as significant risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, it explores the underlying molecular mechanisms through which these contaminants exert their influence, aiming to unravel the complex interactions that drive the pathogenesis of the disease. Multiple linear regression (MLR) models were developed for predicting chronic zinc toxicity to a freshwater microalga, Chlorella sp., using three toxicity‐modifying factors (TMFs): pH, hardness, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The interactive effects between pH and hardness and between pH and DOC were also included. Models were developed at three different effect concentration (EC) levels: EC10, EC20, and EC50. Models were independently validated using six different zinc‐spiked Australian natural waters with a range of water chemistries. Stepwise regression found hardness to be an influential TMF in model scenarios and was retained in all final models, while pH, DOC, and interactive terms had variable influence and were only retained in some models. Autovalidation and residual analysis of all models indicated that models generally predicted toxicity and that there was little bias based on individual TMFs. The MLR models, at all effect levels, performed poorly when predicting toxicity in the zinc‐spiked natural waters during independent validation, with models consistently overpredicting toxicity. This overprediction may be from another unaccounted for TMF that may be present across all natural waters. Alternatively, this consistent overprediction questions the underlying assumption that models developed from synthetic laboratory test waters can be directly applied to natural water samples. Efforts to incorporate bioavailability adjustments into regulatory water quality criteria in the United States have included four major procedures: hardness‐based single‐linear regression equations, water‐effect ratios (WERs), biotic ligand models (BLMs), and multiple‐linear regression models (MLRs) that use dissolved organic carbon, hardness, and pH. The performance of each with copper (Cu) is evaluated, emphasizing the relative performance of hardness‐based versus MLR‐based criteria equations. The WER approach was shown to be inherently highly biased. The hardness‐based model is in widest use, and the MLR approach is the US Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA's) present recommended approach for developing aquatic life criteria for metals. The performance of criteria versions was evaluated with numerous toxicity datasets that were independent of those used to develop the MLR models, including olfactory and behavioral toxicity, and field and ecosystem studies. Within the range of water conditions used to develop the Cu MLR criteria equations, the MLR performed well in terms of predicting toxicity and protecting sensitive species and ecosystems. In soft waters, the MLR outperformed both the BLM and hardness models. In atypical waters with pH <5.5 or >9, neither the MLR nor BLM predictions were reliable, suggesting that site‐specific testing would be needed to determine reliable Cu criteria for such settings. The hardness‐based criteria performed poorly with all toxicity datasets, showing no or weak ability to predict observed toxicity. In natural waters, MLR and BLM criteria versions were strongly correlated. In contrast, the hardness‐criteria version was often out of phase with the MLR and, depending on waterbody and season, could be either strongly overprotective or underprotective. In order to improve the understanding of the environmental impacts of polymetallic nodule mining, ecotoxicological studies were conducted on the growth of model phytoplankton species Skeletonema costatum and Prorocentrum donghaiense using cobalt and nickel. This study evaluated various physiological and ecological indicators, such as cell proliferation, chlorophyll a, pigments, total protein, and antioxidant enzyme markers. The results show that the introduction of low amounts of cobalt or nickel increased the growth rate of phytoplankton. The phytoplankton benefited from low concentrations of cobalt and nickel stress. The increased protein levels and decreased activity of antioxidant enzymes considerably impacted physiological responses during the promotion of cell abundance. High concentrations of cobalt or nickel resulted in decreased light-absorbing pigments, increased photoprotective pigments, an inactive chlorophyll content, decreased total proteins, and maximal antioxidant enzyme activity in phytoplankton. Throughout the experiment, both the phytoplankton protein and enzyme activity declined with prolonged stress, and the cells underwent age-induced damage. Thus, seabed mining's repercussions on phytoplankton could result in both short-term growth promotion and long-term damage. Many industries are known to use heavy metals like chromium (Cr) to fix dyes in the fabrication processes and malachite green (MG) as colorant. Alkalinity, elevated temperature, or salinity of the industrial effluents makes conventional physicochemical removal of MG and hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] more difficult to apply and demands to perceive potential cost-effective and environment-friendly treatment methods to eliminate or convert them into less toxic compounds. Here, we report simultaneous removal and bioconversion of MG and Cr(VI) by a halophilic biofilm-forming bacterium Halomonas xianhensis SUR308. It can efficiently produce exopolysaccharides as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and form biofilm under oxygen limiting condition. The reduction of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] to trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] is about 100%, and 95% after 84 h of growth in shaken and stagnant culture, respectively. The strain completely decolorizes MG after 48 h of growth in shaken culture. Furthermore, we found that strain SUR308 can efficiently detoxify chromium by reduction and degrades MG via producing various intermediate products simultaneously. Most interestingly, such conversions can also take place in alkaline environment and in environment where substantial amount of salt is present. These unique features of strain SUR308 make it suitable for the simultaneous remediation of toxic heavy metals and hazardous dye even from the environment having higher pH and salinity. In recent years, there has been a growing concern about the negative impact of unforeseen contaminants such as metals in commonly consumed food items, which pose a threat to human well-being. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to evaluate the levels of these contaminants to guarantee the safe consumption of these food items. The goal of the current research is to determine the levels of essential (EMs: Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn) and potentially toxic metals (PTMs: Al, Cr, Ni, As, Cd, and Pb) in various brands of wheat-based sweets. One hundred samples were collected and analysed via flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Also, the current study was to investigate the distribution, correlation, and multivariate analysis of 13 metals (Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Al, Cr, Ni, As, Cd, and Pb). Hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to interpret the metals' association. The concentration (mg/kg) ranges of EMs were, in order, Mg (12.70–65.67), Ca (24.02–209.12), Mn (1.32–9.61), Fe (4.55–111.23), Co (0.32–8.94), Cu (2.12–8.61), and Zn (2.60–19.36), while the concentration (mg/kg) ranges of PTMs were, in order, Al (0.32–0.87), Cr (0.17–5.74), Ni (0.36–1.54), Cd (0.16–0.56), and Pb (0.14–0.92), and As was not detected in any sample under investigation. The HCA data revealed that Co, Al, and Ni form clusters with other metals. Sweets are prepared at high temperatures, and the elevated temperatures can increase the likelihood of Ni and Al leaching from stainless steel. Tolerable dietary intake (TDI) values for Ni were higher than the values established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The CR value found for the Ni and Cr was at the threshold level of cancer risk, if an amount of 25 g were to be used over a lifetime. In a nutshell, this study highlights the monitoring of EM and PTM levels in wheat-based sweets, and from a food safety perspective, the study is important for consumers of wheat-based sweets. Rice straw (RS), biochar (BC) and lime (LM) have proved to be effective immobilizing agents in acidic contaminated soil. Up-to-date scientific data is lacking regarding residual effects of these amendments in acidic soils and wheat/rice cropping system. The objective was to analyze the efficacy of amendments to improve grain yields, nutritional quality, and reduce Ni bioavailability of wheat/rice rotation system. A pot experiment was conducted to examine the efficacy of RS, BC 10 and 20 g kg−1 and LM 10 g kg−1 application rates on plant growth, nutritional quality and Ni contents in wheat and rice tissues and grain. Amendments enhanced Ni immobilization, declined their uptake by plants and accumulation in the grains of both crops. Rice straw biochar reduced several factors like health risk assessment, Ni uptake and bioconcentration factor. BC 20 g kg−1 increased shoot, root and grain yields, while enhanced essential nutrients in the wheat/rice cropping system compared to untreated soil. Soil amendments significantly decreased toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) extractable Ni by 42.25% and 42.62% and simple bioaccessibility extraction test (SBET) by 42.1% and 45.25% in post- wheat/rice crops. Increases in congenital anomalies were reported from Iraq post-2003. We investigated associations of residential proximity to two US military bases – Camp Victory and Base Falcon – and metal levels in hair samples of children with congenital anomalies (22 cases and 9 controls). We developed mixed effects logistic regression models with village as the random effect, congenital anomalies as the outcome and distance to the closest US base and hair metal levels (one at a time) as the exposure, controlling for child's age, sex, and paternal education. We explored the mediation of the association between proximity to the base and congenital anomalies by hair metal levels. Children with higher tungsten (W) in hair had marginally higher odds of congenital anomalies (OR=1.32, 95 %CI = (1.01,2.02), P=.10). One µg/kg increase in W was associated with 41 % higher odds of a congenital abnormality (95 %CI=(1.08,2.33), P=.04). But proximity to military bases didn't have any effect on congenital anomalies. Higher hair chromium (Cr) marginally increased the odds of congenital anomalies (OR=1.02, 95 %CI=(1.00,.05), P=.09). Children with one µg/kg higher concentration of Cr in hair had 3 % higher odds of having congenital anomalies (95 %CI=(1.01,1.07), P=.04). Analyses were conducted by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry.
