Abstract

The drug strontium ranelate may strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women, according to a study of 1,649 women. Over a three-year period, women who took the drug were almost half as likely to fracture a bone as women who did not. They also had greater bone density in the spine and hip after three years of treatment.

Abstract

Giving postmenopausal women an intravenous infusion of a drug called zoledronic acid appears to be as effective as other similar drugs used to treat osteoporosis that must be taken orally every day. This is important because these drugs, which are called bisphosphonates, have side effects that could be minimized if they are only taken once a year.

Abstract

The drug risedronate (Actonel) can lower the risk of hip fracture in elderly women with osteoporosis, according to a study of 5,445 elderly women with osteoporosis. The drug was less effective in reducing the risk of hip fracture in 3,886 elderly women who did not have osteoporosis but had at least one other risk factor for hip fracture.

Abstract

Paget's disease of bone is characterized by excessive destruction and re-formation of bone that often leads to enlarged bones. This can be detected on X-ray and also by radionuclide bone scans. Bone pain is the most common symptom and can be treated with aspirin, acetaminophen or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The disease can lead to fractures and osteoporosis and drugs have been developed to suppress abnormal bone formation. They include calcitonin and the bisphosphonate drugs, including pamidronate, alendronate and etidronate.

Abstract

Vitamin D3 and calcium may reduce the risk of hip fractures and nonvertebral fractures in elderly women. Nonvertebral fractures are those not involving the vertebrae. The risk of these kinds of fractures increases significantly with aging, due largely to a reduction in bone density. Increases in parathyroid hormone and decreases in calcium intake contribute to this loss of bone density. Of 1,765 women, ages 69 to 106 and able to walk, 877 took vitamin D3 and calcium and 888 took placebos. After 18 months, the women taking vitamin D3 and calcium had 43% fewer hip fractures and overall 32% fewer nonvertebral fractures than women who took placebos. Parathyroid hormone levels dropped 44% in the women taking vitamin D3 and calcium. Bone density increased an average of 2.7% in the treatment group and decreased 4.6% in the placebo group.
