Close to a magical angle, twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) systems exhibit isolated flat electronic bands and, accordingly, strong electron localization. TBLGs have hence been ideal platforms to explore superconductivity, correlated insulating states, magnetism, and quantized anomalous Hall states in reduced dimension. Below a threshold twist angle ($\sim$ $1.1^\circ$), the TBLG superlattice undergoes lattice reconstruction, leading to a periodic moir\'e structure which presents a marked atomic corrugation. Using a tight-binding framework, this research demonstrates that superlattice reconstruction affects significantly the electronic structure of small-angle TBLGs. The first magic angle at $\sim$ $1.1^\circ$ is found to be a critical case presenting globally maximized electron localization, thus separating reconstructed TBLGs into two classes with clearly distinct electronic properties. While low-energy Dirac fermions are still preserved at large twist angles $> 1.1 ^\circ$, small-angle ($\lesssim 1.1^\circ$) TBLG systems present common features such as large spatial variation and strong electron localization observed in unfavorable AA stacking regions. However, for small twist angles below $1.1 ^\circ$, the relative contribution of the local AA regions is progressively reduced, thus precluding the emergence of further magic angles, in very good agreement with existing experimental evidence., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 SI document, revised for publication

An investigation of the structural, magnetic, thermodynamic, and charge transport properties of non-centrosymmetric hexagonal ScFeGe reveals it to be an anisotropic metal with a transition to a weak itinerant incommensurate helimagnetic state below $T_N = 36$ K. Neutron diffraction measurements discovered a temperature and field independent helical wavevector \textbf{\textit{k}} = (0 0 0.193) with magnetic moments of 0.53 $\mu_{B}$ per formula unit confined to the {\it ab}-plane. Density functional theory calculations are consistent with these measurements and find several bands that cross the Fermi level along the {\it c}-axis with a nearly degenerate set of flat bands just above the Fermi energy. The anisotropy found in the electrical transport is reflected in the calculated Fermi surface, which consists of several warped flat sheets along the $c$-axis with two regions of significant nesting, one of which has a wavevector that closely matches that found in the neutron diffraction. The electronic structure calculations, along with a strong anomaly in the {\it c}-axis conductivity at $T_N$, signal a Fermi surface driven magnetic transition, similar to that found in spin density wave materials. Magnetic fields applied in the {\it ab}-plane result in a metamagnetic transition with a threshold field of $\approx$ 6.7 T along with a sharp, strongly temperature dependent, discontinuity and a change in sign of the magnetoresistance for in-plane currents. Thus, ScFeGe is an ideal system to investigate the effect of in-plane magnetic fields on an easy-plane magnetic system, where the relative strength of the magnetic interactions and anisotropies determine the topology and magnetic structure., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

A three-dimensional elemental carbon Kagome lattice (CKL), made of only fourfold coordinated carbon atoms, is proposed based on first-principles calculations. Despite the existence of 60{\deg} bond angles in the triangle rings, widely perceived to be energetically unfavorable, the CKL is found to display exceptional stability comparable to that of C60. The system allows us to study the effects of triangular frustration on the electronic properties of realistic solids, and it demonstrates a metal-insulator transition from that of graphene to a direct gap semiconductor in the visible blue region. By minimizing s-p orbital hybridization, which is an intrinsic property of carbon, not only the band edge states become nearly purely frustrated p states, but also the band structure is qualitatively different from any known bulk elemental semiconductors. For example, the optical properties are similar to those of direct-gap semiconductors GaN and ZnO, whereas the effective masses are comparable or smaller than those of Si.

We study the electronic structure of an ordered array of poly(para-phenylene) chains produced by surface-catalyzed dehalogenative polymerization of 1,4-dibromobenzene on copper (110). The quantization of unoccupied molecular states is measured as a function of oligomer length by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, with Fermi level crossings observed for chains longer than ten phenyl rings. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy reveals a graphene-like quasi one-dimensional valence band as well as a direct gap of 1.15 eV, as the conduction band is partially filled through adsorption on the surface. Tight-binding modelling and ab initio density functional theory calculations lead to a full description of the organic band-structure, including the k dispersion, the gap size and electron charge transfer mechanisms which drive the system into metallic behaviour. Therefore the entire band structure of a carbon-based conducting wire has been fully determined. Ripples in pristine freestanding graphene naturally orient themselves in an array that is alternately curved-up and curved-down; maintaining an average height of zero. Using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to apply a local force, the graphene sheet will reversibly rise and fall in height until the height reaches 60-70 percent of its maximum at which point a sudden, permanent jump occurs. We successfully model the ripples as a spin-half Ising magnetic system, where the height of the graphene is the spin. The permanent jump in height, controlled by the tunneling current, is found to be equivalent to an antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition. The thermal load underneath the STM tip alters the local tension and is identified as the responsible mechanism for the phase transition. Four universal critical exponents are measured from our STM data, and the model provides insight into the statistical role of graphenes unusual negative thermal expansion coefficient., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Ab initio calculations of the spontaneous polarization and piezoelectric properties of boron nitride nanotubes show that they are excellent piezoelectric systems with response values larger than those of piezoelectric polymers. The intrinsic chiral symmetry of the nanotubes induces an exact cancellation of the total spontaneous polarization in ideal, isolated nanotubes of arbitrary indices. Breaking of this symmetry by inter-tube interaction or elastic deformations induces spontaneous polarization comparable to those of wurtzite semiconductors., Comment: 5 pages in PRB double column format, 3 figures

Most of the works devoted so far to the electronic band structure of multiwall nanotubes have been restricted to the case where the individual layers have the same helicity. By comparison, much less is known on the electronic properties of multiwall nanotubes that mix different helicities. These are interesting systems, however, since they can be composed of both metallic and semiconducting layers. For the present work, tight-binding calculations were undertaken for polychiral two-layer nanotubes such as (9,6)@(15,10), (6,6)@(18,2), and others. The recursion technique was used to investigate how the densities of states of the individual layers are affected by the intertube coupling. Constant-current STM images were also calculated for these systems. The result obtained is that the image of a two-wall nanotube is pretty much the same as the one of the isolated external layer. It is only in the case of monochiral, commensurate structures like (5,5)@(10,10) that interlayer effects can be seen on the STM topography., Comment: 12 pages plus 6 figures included in the postscript file
