2. Reconstruction of Angstrom resolution exit-waves by the application of drift-corrected phase-shifting off-axis electron holography

Abstract

Phase-shifting electron holography is an excellent method to reveal electron wave phase information with very high phase sensitivity over a large range of spatial frequencies. It circumvents the limiting trade-off between fringe spacing and visibility of standard off-axis holography. Previous implementations have been limited by the independent drift of biprism and sample. We demonstrate here an advanced drift correction scheme for the hologram series that exploits the presence of an interface of the TEM specimen to the vacuum area in the hologram. It allows to obtain reliable phase information up to 2{\pi}/452 at the 1 {\AA} information limit of the Titan 80-300 kV environmental transmission electron microscope used, by applying a moderate voltage of 250 V to a single biprism for a fringe spacing of 1 {\AA}. The obtained phase and amplitude information is validated at a thin Pt sample by use of multislice image simulation with the frozen lattice approximation and shows excellent agreement. The presented method is applicable in any TEM equipped with at least one electron biprism and thus enables achieving high resolution off-axis holography in various instruments including those for in-situ applications. Abstract

The phase diagram of $Pr_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3$ is modified x $\le$ 0.3, which suggests a reevaluation of the phase diagram of other manganites in that doping region. Rather than an orbital ordered phase reaching up to high temperatures of approximately 800-1100 K, we propose a loss of spontaneous orbital order already near room temperature. Above this temperature, the phase is characterized by a finite orbital polarization and octahedral tilt pattern. The tilt pattern couples to the Jahn-Teller distortion and thus induces a remaining orbital order, which persists up to high temperatures, where the tilt order is lost as well. This explains the experimental observation of orbital order up to high temperatures. The reevaluation of the orbital order transition is based on observed anomalies of various physical properties at a temperatures of 220-260 K in epitaxial thin films of $Pr_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3$ x=0.1, i.e.in the photovoltaic effect, electric transport, magnetization, optical and ultrafast transient pump probe studies. Finite-temperature simulations based on a tight-binding model with carefully adjusted parameters from first-principles calculations exhibit an orbital order phase transition at $T_{OO} \approx$ 300 K for x=0.1. This is consistent with the experimental observation of a temperature dependent change in lattice parameter for bulk samples of the same doping at 300 K for x=0.1 and 350 K for x=0, typical for a second order phase transition. Since our reassignment of the orbital order phase transition towards lower temperatures challenges a well-established and long-accepted picture, we provide results of multiple complementary measurements as well as a detailed discussion., Comment: 32 pages (+10 pages), 12 figures (+8 figures)

Abstract

Spin waves are investigated in Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) waveguides with a thickness of 39 nm and widths ranging down to 50 nm, i.e., with aspect ratios thickness over width approaching unity, using Brillouin Light Scattering spectroscopy. The experimental results are verified by a semi-analytical theory and micromagnetic simulations. A critical width is found, below which the exchange interaction suppresses the dipolar pinning phenomenon. This changes the quantization criterion for the spin-wave eigenmodes and results in a pronounced modification of the spin-wave characteristics. The presented semi-analytical theory allows for the calculation of spin-wave mode profiles and dispersion relations in nano-structures.

Abstract

We have explored the thermodynamics of compressed magnetized plasmas in laboratory experiments and we call these studies "magnetothermodynamics". The experiments are carried out in the Swarthmore Spheromak eXperiment device. In this device, a magnetized plasma source is located at one end and at the other end, a closed conducting can is installed. We generate parcels of magnetized plasma and observe their compression against the end wall of the conducting cylinder. The plasma parameters such as plasma density, temperature, and magnetic field are measured during compression using HeNe laser interferometry, ion Doppler spectroscopy and a linear $\dot{B}$ probe array, respectively. To identify the instances of ion heating during compression, a PV diagram is constructed using measured density, temperature, and a proxy for the volume of the magnetized plasma. Different equations of state are analyzed to evaluate the adiabatic nature of the compressed plasma. A 3D resistive magnetohydrodynamic code (NIMROD) is employed to simulate the twisted Taylor states and show stagnation against the end wall of the closed conducting can. Abstract

We present a time-resolved study of the magnetization dynamics in a microstructured Cr$|$Heusler$|$Pt waveguide driven by the Spin-Hall-Effect and the Spin-Transfer-Torque effect via short current pulses. In particular, we focus on the determination of the threshold current at which the spin-wave damping is compensated. We have developed a novel method based on the temporal evolution of the magnon density at the beginning of an applied current pulse at which the magnon density deviates from the thermal level. Secondary outcomes included demographic distribution, polyp detection rate (PDR), distribution of Leighton–Rex grade, and adverse events.Patients and Methods: In a nested cohort within the CareForColon2015 trial, a subgroup of 406 individuals underwent CCE in 2021. The first half (control) received the standard bowel preparation and the second half (prucalopride) was supplemented with 2 mg of prucalopride. Transit times and bowel preparations were analyzed and completion rates calculated as those having timely transit and acceptable bowel cleanliness. Major adverse events were recorded continuously and minor adverse events were quantified from questionnaires.Results: The group demographics were homogenous. The prevalence ratio for complete CCE was 1.32 (CI 95% 1.15; 1.53) in the prucalopride group compared to the control group. Completion rate was 74.9% in the prucalopride group and 56.7% in the control group. The proportions of acceptable bowel preparation and complete transits were higher in the prucalopride group. The mean CCE transit time was 2 hours and 8 minutes faster in the prucalopride group. The PDR was higher in the intervention group with 55.7% compared to 36.0% in the control group for polyps greater than 9 mm, whereas the groups’ PDRs were similar for small and diminutive polyps. In all, 589 polyps (mean 2.9) were found in the prucalopride group compared to 522 polyps (mean 2.6) in the control group.Conclusion: Prucalopride led to an increase in CCE completion rates. The proportions of complete transits and acceptable bowel preparations were higher in the prucalopride group. The PDR was higher in the prucalopride group compared to the control group. No major adverse events were identified. 19. CoFeAlB alloy with low damping and low magnetization for spin transfer torque switching

Abstract

We investigate the effect of Al doping on the magnetic properties of the alloy CoFeB. Comparative measurements of the saturation magnetization, the Gilbert damping parameter $\alpha$ and the exchange constant as a function of the annealing temperature for CoFeB and CoFeAlB thin films are presented. Our results reveal a strong reduction of the magnetization for CoFeAlB in comparison to CoFeB. If the prepared CoFeAlB films are amorphous, the damping parameter $\alpha$ is unaffected by the Al doping in comparison to the CoFeB alloy. In contrast, in the case of a crystalline CoFeAlB film, $\alpha$ is found to be reduced. Furthermore, the x-ray characterization and the evolution of the exchange constant with the annealing temperature indicate a similar crystallization process in both alloys. The data proves the suitability of CoFeAlB for spin torque switching properties where a reduction of the switching current in comparison with CoFeB is expected., Comment: 5 Pages, 5 Figures

Abstract

We present a time-resolved study of the DC-current driven magnetization dynamics in a microstructured Cr/Heusler/Pt waveguide by means of Brillouin light scattering. A reduction of the effective spin-wave damping via the spin-transfer-torque effect leads to a strong increase in the magnon density. This is accompanied by a decrease of the spin-wave frequencies. By evaluating the time scales of these effects, the origin of this frequency shift can be identified. However, recently, we found that the experimental setup partially influences the decay of the spin-wave intensity after the current pulse is switched off. Abstract

We report on the excitation and detection of short-waved spin waves with wave vectors up to about $40\,\mathrm{rad}\,\mu\mathrm{m}^{-1}$ in spin-wave waveguides made from ultrathin, in-plane magnetized Co$_{8}$Fe$_{72}$B$_{20}$ (CoFeB). The CoFeB is incorporated in a layer stack of Ta/CoFeB/Mgo, a layer system featuring large spin orbit torques and a large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant. The short-waved spin waves are excited by nanometric coplanar waveguides and are detected via spin rectification and microfocussed Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. We show that the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy benefits the spin-wave lifetime greatly, resulting in a lifetime comparable to bulk systems without interfacial damping. The presented results pave the way for the successful extension of magnonics to ultrathin asymmetric layer stacks featuring large spin orbit torques.

Abstract

The fundamental phenomenon of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) has been observed in different systems of real and quasi-particles. The condensation of real particles is achieved through a major reduction in temperature while for quasi-particles a mechanism of external injection of bosons by irradiation is required. Here, we present a novel and universal approach to enable BEC of quasi-particles and to corroborate it experimentally by using magnons as the Bose-particle model system. The critical point to this approach is the introduction of a disequilibrium of magnons with the phonon bath. After heating to an elevated temperature, a sudden decrease in the temperature of the phonons, which is approximately instant on the time scales of the magnon system, results in a large excess of incoherent magnons. The consequent spectral redistribution of these magnons triggers the Bose-Einstein condensation., Comment: In contrast to the previous version additional information has been added. Abstract

The prevention of infections is essential to athletes health and performance. Even mild infections can severely affect athletic performance and the eligibility to train and compete. One of the most effective means of avoiding severe infections are vaccinations. However, like the general population, athletes frequently do not receive the recommended vaccinations. This shortcoming is largely based on fear of adverse vaccine reactions, concerns about the efficacy, misinterpretations, negligence, and poor communication. As sports medicine physicians are involved in the regular screening of adolescent, adult, and senior athletes, they are in a unique position to advise on an individual basis about the risks and benefits of an athlete-specific vaccination schedule. Thus, every preparticipation physical examination should be used to check the vaccination status and, if needed, optimize and update the athletes vaccination profile. In this clinical review, recommendations for standard, travel, and specific-indication vaccinations in athletes will be given and their efficacy, timing, and administration in the sports context will be discussed. Abstract

An emerging branch of electronics, the optospintronics, would be highly boosted if the control of magnetic order by light is implemented in magnetic semiconductors nanostructures being compatible with the actual technology. Here we show that the ferromagnetic magnetization of low Fe-doped ZnO nanowires prepared by carbothermal process is enhanced under illumination up to temperatures slightly below room temperature. This enhancement is related to the existence of an oxygen vacancy V$_{\rm O}$ in the neighbouring of an antiferromagnetic superexchange Fe$^{3+}$-Fe$^{3+}$ pair. Under illumination the V$_{\rm O}$ is ionized to V$_{\rm O}^+$ giving an electron to a close Fe$^{3+}$ ion from the antiferromagnetic pair. This light excited electron transition allows the transition of Fe$^{3+}$ to Fe$^{2+}$ forming stable ferromagnetic double exchange pairs, increasing the total magnetization. Abstract

Introduction: An infection with SARS-CoV-2 is relevant especially in high-performance sport due to possible organ damage and reduced performance which occurs in individual cases. Various recommendations are found in the literature concerning when safe return to sports is possible and what examinations are suitable to support this decision. The dominance of other virus variants than those at the start of the pandemic makes revision of earlier recommendations necessary. Methods and Analysis: The recommended actions are based on the currently-available scientific knowledge of the pathogenicity of the virus and on clinical experiences in general and elite athletes. Twenty-one recommended actions were proposed by the Scientific Council of the DGSP, discussed and agreed on in consensus with experts from German-language sports-medical facilities and evaluated by an independent co-author. The resultant position paper was subsequently released by mutual agreement. Results: The recommendations are oriented to the severity of the course and the symptoms. The required medical diagnostic is deduced therefrom. During persistent symptoms, sports should be paused and training only begun again at low intensity after a three-day symptom-free period. If COVID-19-associated complaints recur, physical exertion should be stopped and a doctor consulted. After moderate and serious course, medical diagnostics are required prior to the start of training. Summary: To prevent a health risk due to sports and thereby resultant organ damage after a SARS-CoV-2 infection, a procedure adapted to the symptoms and course before return to training and finally to competitive sports is recommended.

Abstract

Ferromagnetic resonance driven spin pumping of pure spin currents from a ferromagnet into a nonmagnetic material promises new spin-functional devices with low energy consumption. The mechanism of spin pumping is under intense investigation and it is widely believed that exchange interaction between the ferromagnet and nonmagnetic material is responsible for this phenomenon. We observe a thousand-fold exponential decay of the spin pumping from 20-nm thick Y3Fe5O12 films to platinum across insulating barriers, from which the exponential decay lengths of 0.16 and 0.23 nm are extracted for oxide barriers with band gaps of 4.93 eV and 2.36 eV, respectively. This prototypical signature of quantum tunneling through a barrier underscores the importance of exchange coupling for spin pumping and reveals its dependence on the characteristics of the barrier material., Comment: 19 papges, 5 figures
