We comment on the recent paper published by the Obelix Collaboration on protonium annihilation into pi /sup 0/ pi /sup 0/ at rest in a liquid hydrogen target ÝPhys. Rev. D 65, 012001 (2002)¿, with particular reference to the discrepancy with the results obtained by the Crystal Barrel Collaboration.

Abstract

We report results of a high resolution search for the tensor glueball candidate ξ(2230) in a p̄p formation experiment. π0π0 and ηη decay channels were measured in a scan of the mass region 2220 MeV to 2240 MeV. No evidence for the existence of ξ(2230) was found. 95% confidence upper limits for the possible existence of ξ are presented.

Abstract

We have determined branching ratios for antiproton annihilations at rest on protons or neutrons in liquid deuterium which we compare to frequencies of isospin-related processes in antiproton-proton annihilations. Using the annihilation rates into pi /sup 0/ pi /sup 0 / and pi /sup -/ pi /sup 0/ where the annihilation took place on the proton or neutron, respectively, we discuss the fraction of S-wave and P-wave annihilation in liquid D/sub 2/. The frequencies for pi /sup -/ omega and rho /sup -/ pi /sup 0/, and pi /sup -/ eta and pi /sup -/ eta ' and the corresponding frequencies for pp annihilations are used to determine isoscalar and isovector contributions to the protonium wave function. We observe rho - omega interference in pp to pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ eta and pi /sup +/ pi /sup -/ pi /sup 0/ annihilation. The annihilation rate for pd to K/sup -/K/sup 0/p confirms the dominance of the isovector contribution to NN to KK annihilations. Furthermore, we searched for narrow quasinuclear bound states close to the NN threshold, but with negative outcome. (44 refs).

Abstract

Resonances with the exotic quantum numbers JPC = 1-+ are observed in ρπ at m = 1400 – 1480 MeV/c² and in b1 π at 1600 MeV/c². Comparison of the S- and P-wave &pmacr;n branchings leads to the conclusion that the present ρπ resonance is different from the exotic ηπ resonance found in previous annihilation studies. Excited α1 and π states are observed in the ρπ, ρ′π and ρω systems. Further evidence for the 2-component character of the E/i(1440) is found in its ση decay. A study of ωπ decay of excited ρ states supports the existence of a ρ′ about 250 MeV/c² below the ρ′(1450). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The preliminary results of the analysis of &pmacr;n → π[sup -]3π[sup °] annihilation at rest are presented. About 205.520 events were taken with the Crystal Barrel Detector with a liquid deuterium target. A full four-body-partial wave analysis with the maximum likelihood method was applied for a part of this sample. The dominant intermediate states in the data consist of a ρ-meson combined with the (ππ) S-wave or with the D-wave (f[sub 2](1270)). Beneath the well established resonances the partial wave analysis yields a broad resonant structure in the exotic (pπ) P-wave at about 1500MeV/c². In addition, the (pπ)-system is found in the a[sub 1](1260), a[sub 1] (1640), a[sub 2](1320), a[sub 2](1650), π(1300) and π(1800) states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Prominent KK¯ resonances observed in the in-flight annihilation of p¯p into K+K−π0 include f2(1270), f0(1500), f2′(1525), ϕ(1680)/ρ(1700) and a state at 1750 MeV/c2 consistent with f0(1710). The reaction cross sections σ(p¯p→X(K+K−)π0) are obtained by means of a partial wave analysis. When these are combined with known KK¯ partial widths, the resulting production rates of presumably non-nn¯ states, X=f0(1710) and f2′(1525), are found to be suppressed by an order of magnitude compared to f0(1500) and f2(1270), respectively.

Abstract

Crystal Barrel data are presented for p¯p→ωπ+π−π0 at rest, with ω→π+π−π0. A small but definite signal confirms a0(1450) decaying to ωρ. Its branching ratio to ωρ is a factor 10.7±2.3 larger than to ηπ, where it was first identified. When fitted with a Breit–Wigner amplitude which includes the s-dependence of the ωρ channel, the pole position is M=1440+40−15−i(55±7) MeV.The exotic π1(1600) is observed decaying to b1π with orbital angular momenta L=0 and 2. There is also a strong JPC=1++ signal consistent with a1(1640) decaying to ωρ and a much weaker signal for decays to [b1(1235)π]L=1. The strongest contribution to the data is a JPC=0−+ signal in ωρ suggesting a pole at M=1470±15−i(57±7) MeV. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
