The young adult novels of Alex Sanchez belong in every high school English classroom and media center. With compelling plots and significant themes, Sanchez's six novels create numerous rich learning opportunities for students. In this article, the author describes how Sanchez's novels on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender themes can be taught to meet a wide range of English language arts curriculum standards.

Compares business communication students' thinking styles with the processes and products of collaborative writing groups. Finds that (1) students with identical thinking styles do not naturally team up in forming groups, (2) thinking style is more important than academic major in influencing group success, and (3) thinking style variety within a group is beneficial. A culturally sensitive consultative process to facilitate adoption by tribal councils of more effective tobacco control policies was developed and evaluated. Thirty-nine Northwest Indian tribes were randomized to early intervention or late intervention conditions. Early intervention tribes received a policy workbook and consultation by means of meetings and telephone calls. Late intervention tribes were assessed but received no assistance or encouragement regarding tobacco use policies. The stringency of the policies was assessed via telephone at baseline and after intervention. At postintervention, there were consistent, and generally statistically significant, differences in adoption of more stringent and comprehensive smoking policies for early intervention tribes compared with late intervention tribes. The intervention could be used in other Indian settings. (Am J Public Health. 1995; 85:991-994), Programs designed to help Indian tribes institute tobacco control policies appear to work. Thirty-nine tribes in the northwestern U.S. were assigned to either have a workshop with follow-up visits and phone consultations on publicizing and implementing tribal policies on tobacco control or to act as the control group. Eighteen months after the workshop, the tribes were surveyed and tribal newsletters were reviewed. Before the workshop, one-fifth of both groups had a policy of no smoking in council meeting rooms and common and private work areas. At follow up, 58% of tribes having the workshop versus 30% of the control tribes had such policies. Of the six tribes with newsletters in the workshop group, one article in seven was devoted to tobacco policy versus one article in 36 in the four tribes with newsletters in the control group.

A six-year study of the throughflow-transport in the Indonesian region has intense annual and semiannual components. In August/September, the maximum net, relative transport between Australia and Indonesia is 12 Sv. There is a remarkable variation in the amplitude and phase of the annual signal within this region.
