Poria cocos (Schw.) wolf (P. cocos) is an important medicinal material with both therapeutic and edible properties. This study investigated volatile constituents, amino acids, proteins, polysaccharides, triterpenoid ingredients, and alcohol-soluble extracts on P. cocos during eight drying processes. A total of 47 volatile components were found and identified; the main volatile components of shade drying (SD) and hot-air drying at 50 °C (HD50) were esters and alcohols, while for drying in hot air at 60 °C~100 °C (△ = 10 °C) and infrared drying (ID), the main compounds were aldehydes and hydrocarbons. The amino acids in P. cocos remained the same when dried with various methods. Compared with SD samples, with the temperature increase, the content of amino acids showed a trend of first decreasing and then increasing, while the content trend of proteins was the opposite. The HD70 samples had the highest content of polysaccharide, triterpenoid ingredients, alcohol-soluble extracts, and antioxidant activity. Furthermore, volatile compounds showed a correlation between non-volatile constituents. This research provides evidence that the aroma, active components, and activity of P. cocos were affected by the drying method.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of different doses of the fibrous roots of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua on the growth performance, slaughter parameters, meat quality, immune function, cytokines, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal morphology of white-feathered broilers. Also, the mechanism to improve immune functions of broilers was explored through network pharmacology and molecular docking technology. A total of 360 AA-white-feathered broilers were randomly divided into six groups (not separated by sex), with six repetitions per group (n = 10). The groups were as follows: basal diet (CON group), basal diet supplemented with 300 mg/kg aureomycin (ANT group), basal diet supplemented with 2%, 3%, and 4% fibrous root raw powder (LD, MD, and HD group), or basal diet supplemented with 3% fibrous root processed powder (PR group), in a 42-day experiment. The dietary inclusion of P. cyrtonema fibrous roots increased slaughter performance (p < 0.05), reduced the fat rate (p < 0.05), improved intestinal morphology (p < 0.05), and improved the immune organ index to varying degrees. It also significantly improved pH reduction, drip loss, and pressure loss of breast muscle and leg muscle (p < 0.05). Furthermore, it significantly improved immune and antioxidant functions including decreased MDA content of serum (p < 0.01), increased GSH-Px content (p < 0.01), IgG, IgA, and C4 contents (p < 0.05), and increased expression of IL-2 and IFN-γ (p < 0.01). Additionally, the mechanism by which fibrous roots improve immune function in broilers was explored using network pharmacology and molecular docking technology. Network pharmacology and molecular docking revealed that flavonoids such as baicalein, 4′,5-Dihydroxyflavone, 5,7-dihydroxy-6,8-dimethyl-3-(4′-hydroxybenzyl)-chroman-4-one, and 5,7-dihydroxy-3-(2′-hydroxy-4′-methoxybenzyl)-6,8-dimethyl-chroman-4-one were key components that enhanced immune function through the MAPK1 and other key targets involved in regulating the MAPK signaling pathway. From the findings, it can be concluded that incorporating P. cyrtonema Hua fibrous root as a natural feed supplement and growth promoter in broiler diets had a positive impact on bird health and performance.

Contamination of agricultural products by cadmium (Cd) is a global health problem, causing chronic abnormalities. The consumption of rice, the most-consumed foods, is an important exposure route of Cd to human body. Chloride (Cl-) is reported to increase Cd uptake by rice; however, the effect on Cd uptake and accumulation by rice in the presence of lime is not clear. Therefore, a pot culture experiment was performed to explore the influence of Cl- on the absorption and accumulation of Cd in rice plants under lime remediation and its possible mechanisms. The results showed that Cl- promoted Cd accumulation in rice grains, mainly because of increased Cd bioavailability in the soil and by impeding the formation of iron plaques on rice roots, which reduced chelating and precipitation of Cd. Moreover, increased overexpression of the main transporters of Cd in rice roots, including OsNramp5, OsNramp1, OsIRTs and OsHMA2, favored the upward translocation of Cd from the root to shoot and increased the transfer factors (TFs) from soil to root, root-stem, leaf to grain, and soil to grain. Therefore, the application of Cl-rich materials to Cd-contaminated rice fields should be avoided during liming of the soil for Cd immobilization.

The effects of zeolite amendment on the Cd absorption and accumulation of two varieties of rice, ZY-18 (Zheyou 18, hybrid indica) and DL-5 (Donglian 5, conventional indica), planted in a slightly Cd-contaminated paddy soil, and the associated mechanisms were studied based on a pot experiment. The results showed that zeolite addition significantly reduced the Cd availability in the soil by the increasing of soil pH and the Cd sorption capacity of soil, as well as the reduction of Eh, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and the water-soluble Fe/Mn in the soil. The decrease in the amount of Fe and Cd in iron plaques on rice roots treated with zeolite resulted in the reduction of Cd uptake by rice roots. Zeolite application decreased the Cd contents in the roots, stems and leaves, and finally the brown rice through the inhibition of uptake and translocation of Cd by rice plant. The Cd concentration in rice grains of ZY-18 was more decreased than that of DL-5, which was attributed to its higher pH and lower Eh, DOC, and Cd availability in the soil, higher mounts of iron plaque and Cd in plaques on rice roots, and lower root-to-grain transfer factor (TFroot-grain) of ZY-18.

Bitter orange, Citrus aurantium L. var. amara (CAVA), is an important crop and its flowers and fruits are widely used in China as a food spice, as well as in traditional Chinese medicine, due to its health-promoting properties. The secondary metabolites that are present in plant-derived foods or medicines are, in part, responsible for the health benefits and desirable flavor profiles. Nevertheless, detailed information about the bioactive ingredients in CAVA is scarce. Therefore, this study was aimed at exploring the phytochemicals of CAVA by high performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-Q-TOF-MS). Here, a systematic screening method combined with HPLC-Q-TOF-MS was presented. This technique was used to systematically screen metabolites, primarily from the complex matrix of CAVA, and to identify these compounds by their exact masses, characteristic fragment ions, and fragmentation behaviors. A total of 295 metabolites were screened by the screening method and 89 phytochemicals were identified in the flowers, fruits, roots, leaves, and branches of CAVA. For the first time, 69 phytochemicals (flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, etc.) were reported from CAVA. The results highlight the importance of CAVA as a source of secondary metabolites in the food, medicine, and nutraceutical industries.
