Abstract Hospital mortality in sepsis varies between 30–45%. It has been shown that administration of inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) and intravenous corticosteroid in a porcine endotoxemia model attenuated the systemic inflammatory response. We explored the anti-inflammatory effect of a double-treatment strategy (iNO + low-dose steroid) on the lungs in a long-term porcine endotoxic shock model. As metalloproteinases (MMPs) are involved in the initiation of multiple organ dysfunction in septic shock, we evaluated the influence of this combination therapy on MMP2 and MMP9 activity and proIL-1β maturation. A shock-like condition was established in 23 animals by continuous infusion of E. coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS) for 10 h. Then the animals were observed for 10 h. Twelve pigs received iNO and hydrocortisone (iNO treatment started 3 h after the initial LPS infusion and continued until the end of the experiment). Eleven pigs were controls. Pigs treated with iNO and hydrocortisone displayed less inflammatory infiltrates in the lungs than the controls and a lower level of IL-1β. The proMMP2 was significantly decreased in the iNO and hydrocortisone group. The amount of an active MMP9 (~ 60 kDa) was decreased in the iNO and hydrocortisone group. Total gelatinolytic activity was lower in the iNO and hydrocortisone group. Reduced MMP activity was accompanied by a 2.5-fold decrease of the active IL-1β form (17 kDa) in the pulmonary tissue of iNO combined with hydrocortisone exposed pigs. We demonstrated that in a porcine endotoxemia model the NO inhalation combined with intravenous hydrocortisone led to the attenuation of the inflammatory cascade induced by bacterial LPS. The decrease in pulmonary MMPs activities was accompanied by reduced proIL-1β processing.

Maciej Woźniczka’s book is quite a radical reaction to the crisis of Polish education, one of the symptoms of which is the almost total marginalization of philosophical education – optionally possible, but virtually absent in real terms. The author makes an in-depth diagnosis of the Polish education system in the context of the tension between ideas and ideologies, observing its ideologizing deformations on three planes: worldview, ideology, and politics. As a remedy for this state of affairs, he proposes the introduction of universal and obligatory philosophical education, based on a previously culturally awakened need of philosophy, from school to academic education. In the author's intention, the issue is about the necessity to change the educational paradigm towards one that corresponds to worldview pluralism, in which real and universal philosophical education should play a key role. This presentation is an attempt to look at the philosophical and educational reflection of Woźniczka, to show its strengths and weaknesses, to assess the opportunities for conceptual and practical application, to indicate internal tensions and paradoxes that govern it, and to signal development prospects. It is complemented by source intuitions about the essence of education.

For some time now, there has been a definite revival of interest in apophatic theology within religious thinking as well as at its antipodes. It often takes the form of criticism of religion, including Christian Revelation, and thus the theology based on it. From a Christian perspective, this provides an invitation to reflect on the rich heritage of apophaticism and to show its specificity as a consequence of what constitutes the specificum christianorum, i.e. the Trinitatis mystery. Important clues in this regard can be found in the thought of Vladimir N. Lossky, a prominent 20th century Orthodox theologian, a radical defender of the specific apophatic nature of Christianity and a theologian faithful to Trinitarian orthodoxy. Looking at the most important issues related to the Trinitarian dogma, we will point out that in the Russian’s view, the Trinitarian antinomy is the source and foundation of Christian apophaticism and its hermeneutics. This conclusion will be based on revealing the Trinitarian antinomy as what is primordial, unconditioned by nothing, non-derivable from anything and therefore as a purely religious given and truth par excellence, accessible to man through Its free Revelation, which It also infinitely transcends.

Celem artykułu jest próba przedstawienia rozumienia teologii przez Włodzimierza N. Łosskiego, jednego z najwybitniejszych myślicieli prawosławnych XX wieku. Wydaje się, że prezentowane przez niego podejście jest istotne nie tylko ze względów systematyczno-historycznych, ale może być inspirujące także w kontekście wyzwań ekumenicznych oraz pytań o znaczenie, miejsce i rolę teologii we współczesnym Kościele i świecie. Duchowa świeżość uprawiania teologii przez Rosjanina jest w stanie uwypuklić duchowy wymiar niejednokrotnie zbyt akademickiej myśli teologicznej. Jednak tym, co szczególnie zachęca do poświęcenia jej uwagi, jest postulowany związek teologii z komunią z żywym Bogiem, przeżywaną i poznawaną z jej wnętrza, a nie w formie niezaangażowanego i niejako przedmiotowego oglądu. Teologia, tak jak rozumie ją Łosski, a zarazem jak ją uprawia, jest mistyczna i tym samym teopoietyczno-apofatyczna. Rozjaśnieniu tych kwestii poświęcone jest niniejsze studium.

Popkultura, jako zjawisko co najmniej aporetyczne, w swej współczesnej, dotąd w dziejach ludzkości niespotykanej odsłonie, stanowi potężny kryzys, a zarazem wyzwanie dla tradycyjnie rozumianej edukacji, silnie obecnej w instytucjach i systemach edukacyjnych, która okazuje się być nieadekwatna wobec konieczności odpowiadania wymaganiom współczesności. Aldona Pobojew-ska remedium na ów stan rzeczy upatruje w humanistyce, a dokładniej w filozofii. Idzie wszak o filozofowanie rozumiane jako swoisty paradygmat powszechnoedukacyjny, którego wzorcowy model stanowią warsztaty z dociekań filozoficznych. Niniejszy tekst poświęcony jest próbie krytycznego przyjrzenia się tejże propozycji w odniesieniu do współczesnej, popkulturowej sy-tuacji edukacyjnej, względem której stanowi ona jednocześnie lekarstwo i diagnozę.

Trójjedyność Boga jest treścią najważniejszego chrześcijańskiego dogmatu, będąc kluczem hermeneutycznym doświadczenia Objawienia i historii zbawienia. Stanowi ona jedną i w gruncie rzeczy jedyną Prawdę wielu prawd wiary. Doświadczeniem, które konstytuuje chrześcijaństwo, jest bowiem radykalne i definitywne samoudzielenie się trójjedynego Boga – Pater per Filium in Spiritu Sancto. Dlatego zrozumienie, kim jest trójjedyny Bóg, stanowi niezbywalny chrześcijańsko-prawdziwościowy warunek wszelkiej możliwej hermeneutyki. Nie chodzi tu jedynie o fascynującą spekulację, ale o być albo nie być chrześcijaństwa, a tym samym o być albo nie być ludzkości w jej całej stworzonej realności jako właściwego adresata samoudzielenia się Boga. Tajemnica każdego człowieka, zarówno w jego wymiarze indywidualnym jak i społecznym, jest bowiem z chrześcijańskiej perspektywy dana do rozumienia jedynie jako wydarzająca się pomiędzy Ojcem, Synem i Duchem Świętym.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na ślepy zaułek, w jakim znalazły się współcześnie zarówno filozofia, jak i pedagogika, ze względu na utratę wzajemnych odniesień źródłowych, a ostatecznie „więcej” niż wspólnego odniesienia do Bez-Źródła, z którego, w którym i ku któremu się wydarzają, a bez czego jawią się jako zawieszone w próżni. Ale jako że diagnoza choroby ma sens jedynie w kontekście wskazania potrzeby i kierunku leczenia, przedstawiona została propozycja i apel o powrót do źródłowości jako pilne zadanie uniwersalnego dialogu, którego przestrzenią, a zarazem miejscem i „przedmiotem” będzie integralnie, źródłowo rozumiana filozofia wychowania.

Pedagogy, both as an academically theoretical activity and humanistically social practice has been under a serious crisis for a long time. Obviously, this crisis has been caused by numerous rea- sons, both external and internal. Yet, it seems to be a perfect opportunity to re-discover the source of pedagogy in the philosophy of upbringing and – through the conversion in the centre of peda- gogical thinking – to restore the tension between philosophy (in its wise ontological-metaphysical hesitation) and pedagogy. It seems clear that this lack of tension and limiting pedagogy to a de- tailed social science, is damaging and appears to be the fundamental problem and the main reason of the critical condition of contemporary pedagogy.
