To investigate the impact of arthroscopic shoulder labral repair without shoulder instability on career longevity, game use, and performance in National Hockey League (NHL) athletes.A retrospective review of all NHL players who underwent arthroscopic shoulder labral repair from 2004 to 2020 was performed. A 2:1 matched control group was used for comparison. Controls were matched by age, body mass index, position, and experience prior to the index year. Demographic characteristics, game use, and performance metrics were collected for all athletes. Statistical analysis examined game use and performance both at 1-year and 3-year follow-up compared with one season before injury.Twenty-nine players who underwent arthroscopic shoulder labral surgery returned to play (100%) and were matched with 55 control players. The operative cohort experienced shorter careers compared with controls (4.4 ± 3.1 vs 6.0 ± 3.6 seasons,Following return to play after arthroscopic shoulder labral repair, NHL players demonstrated reduced career longevity compared with healthy controls. Players exhibited significant reductions in game use and performance at one season after injury but returned closer to baseline after 3 seasons.Level III; retrospective case control.

The aim of this systematic review is to summarize the incidence of injuries occurring in professional baseball and compare player outcomes reported in the literature METHODS: We conducted a systematic review utilizing the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines across three databases (PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase). Inclusion criteria were studies of injury incidences and/or injury outcomes on active MLB athletes and studies published in the English language. Exclusion criteria was non-MLB players, case series and case report studies with a cohort of3 players, and/or review articles.A total of 477 articles were identified from the initial search of three databases with 105 studies meeting inclusion criteria. Amongst these articles, the most common injuries studied were elbow (38%), shoulder (14%), hip/groin (11%), hand/wrist (7%), head/face (7%), knee (7%), spine (5%), and foot/ankle (3%). Injuries with the highest incidence included hand/wrist (150.3 per year), hamstring (7.8-73.5 per year), ulnar collateral ligament tears (0.23-26.8 per year), gastrocnemius strains (24.2 per year), and concussions (3.6-20.5 per year). Lowest rates of return to play were seen following shoulder labral tears (40-72.5%), rotator cuff tears (33.3-87%), and UCL tears (51-87.9%). The injuries leading to most time away from sport included elbow UCL tears (average 90.3 days treated non-operatively to 622.8 days following revision reconstruction), shoulder labral tears (average 315-492 days) and ACL tears (average 156.2-417.5 days). Following ACL tears, rotator cuff tears, shoulder labral tears, and hip femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) requiring arthroscopy, athletes had a significantly lower workloads compared to prior to injury upon return to play.Most published investigations focus on elbow injuries of the UCL, with variable RTP and mixed performance following surgery. Ulnar collateral ligament tears, shoulder labral tears, and anterior cruciate ligament tears result in the most missed time. Upper extremity injury such as shoulder labral tears, rotator cuff tears, and UCL tears had the poorest RTP rates. Workload was most affected following ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, shoulder labral repair, and hip arthroscopy for FAI.

BACKGROUND Because of the complex nature and relatively rare prevalence of triplane fractures, ideal imaging and optimal treatment remain controversial. The purpose of this investigation was to systematically review and compare clinical outcomes in skeletally immature patients with triplane fractures on the basis of imaging modalities [radiography alone vs. radiography+computed tomography (CT)] and fracture management (operative vs. nonoperative). METHODS A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement using a PRISMA checklist. All the literature related to skeletally immature patients with triplane fractures published from January 1988 to March 2020 were identified. Inclusion criteria consisted of skeletally immature patients with triplane fractures with reported imaging modality performed during diagnosis, fracture management, and postoperative outcomes on the basis of functional scores and the incidence of any complications. RESULTS A total of 11 articles met inclusion criteria, comprising a total of 203 skeletally immature patients with 203 documented triplane fractures. Male individuals were significantly older at the time of injury (14.2±0.6 y) when compared with female individuals (12.6±0.9 y) (P=0.006). Fracture diagnosis and management were evaluated using radiography+CT in 63% (128/203) of patients, whereas 37% (75/203) underwent radiography only. No significant differences in good/excellent Modified Weber Protocol scores were reported in patients treated nonoperatively versus those undergoing operative treatment (P=0.78), whereas Modified Weber Protocol scores were significantly higher in patients using radiography alone (P=0.02). No significant difference in complication incidence was reported on the basis of management type (nonoperative, 16%; operative, 15%; P=0.47). CONCLUSIONS Patients undergoing operative management of triplane fractures achieved comparable functional outcomes scores without an increased incidence of complications when compared with patients undergoing nonoperative treatment. Further investigations analyzing outcomes at middle and long-term follow-up are necessary to determine the clinical utility of CT and various treatment modalities for the management of triplane fractures. Introduction Robotic-arm assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (RA-UKA) has demonstrated accurate component positioning and excellent outcomes for medial components. However, there is a paucity of literature on lateral compartment RA-UKA. The purpose of our study was to assess the midterm clinical outcomes and survivorship of lateral RA-UKA. Methods This study was a retrospective review of a single-center prospectively maintained cohort of 33 patients (36 knees) indicated for lateral UKA. Perioperative, and postoperative two- and five-year Knee injury Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Score (WOMAC), and Forgotten Joint Score (FJS) patient reported outcome measures were collected. Five-year follow-up was recorded in 29 patients (32 knees). Results Mean follow up was 5.1 ± 0.1 years. Mean age and BMI was 70.9 ± 7.2 years and 29.0 ± 4.2 kg/m2, respectively. At discharge, mean distance walked was 273.4 ± 70.4 feet, and mean pain score was 2.0 ± 2.5. At 2-year follow up, mean KOOS, WOMAC, and FJS were 75.1 ± 13.5, 15.0 ± 7.2, and 81.0 ± 23.3, respectively. At 5-year follow up, mean KOOS, WOMAC, and FJS were 75.3 ± 14.6, 14.9 ± 5.0, and 75.8 ± 27.4, respectively. Mean change in KOOS and WOMAC were 35.6 ± 27.1 and 11.7 ± 13.4 ( p< .001 and p< .001). 94% of patients were very satisfied/satisfied, 3% neutral, and 3% dissatisfied. 91% met activity expectations, and 59% were more active than before. Survivorship was 100% at 5 years. Discussion In this study, lateral RA-UKA demonstrated significantly improved clinical outcomes, high patient satisfaction, met expectations, and excellent functional recovery at midterm follow up. Comparative studies are needed to determine differences between robotic-assisted and conventional lateral UKA, as well as TKA.

BACKGROUND The purpose of our study was to investigate the mid-term clinical and functional outcomes of robotic-arm assisted Bicompartmental knee arthroplasty (BiKA). METHODS This study reviewed a single-centre prospectively maintained cohort of 50 patients (53 knees) who underwent BiKA (patellofemoral and medial compartment) at 5- and 7-year postoperative follow-up. RESULTS Mean follow-up was 7.1 ± 0.1 years (range, 7.0-7.3). Kaplan-Meier survivorship rates at 5 and 7 years were 96% and 93%, respectively. At 7-year follow-up, patient satisfaction was 76% satisfied, 13% neutral, and 11% not satisfied. Mean KSS-FS was 80.5 ± 15.8 (range, 30-100) with 82% of patients reporting walking more than 10 blocks, 89% reporting walking without support, and 100% able to go up and down stairs with 61% requiring use of a rail. Three patients (four knees) underwent revision surgery. CONCLUSIONS Our study reported excellent survivorship and functional outcomes, and good-excellent satisfaction at mid-term follow-up for robotic-arm assisted BiKA.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT Preoperative TNF-AI use has been associated with increased rate of postoperative infections and complications in a variety of orthopedic procedures. However, the association between TNF-AI use and complications following spine surgery has not yet been studied. PURPOSE The purpose of the present study was to assess the risk of reoperation in patients prescribed TNF-AI undergoing spinal fusion surgery. STUDY DESIGN This is a retrospective review. PATIENT SAMPLE A total of 427 patients who underwent spinal fusion surgery at a large healthcare system from 1/1/2009 to 12/31/2018. OUTCOME MEASURE Reoperation within 1 year. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who underwent spinal fusion surgery at a large healthcare system from 1/1/2009 to 12/31/2018. There were three distinct cohorts of spine surgery patients under study: patients with TNF-AI use in 90 days before surgery, patients with non-TNF-AI DMARD medications use in the 90 days before surgery, and patients taking neither TNF-AI nor other DMARD medications in 90 days before surgery. The primary outcome of interest was reoperation for any reason within 1 year following surgery. RESULTS Our study included 90 TNF-AI, 90 DMARD, and 123 control patients. Reoperation up to 1-year postsurgery occurred in 19% (n=17) of the TNF-AI group, 11% (n=10) of the DMARD group, and 6% (n=7) of the control group. The reasons for reoperation for TNF-AI group were 47% (n=8) infection and 53% (n=9) other causes which included failure to fuse and adjacent segment disease. Reasons for reoperation at 1 year were 40% (n=4) infection and 60% (n=6) other causes for DMARD patients and 14% (n=1) infection with 86% (n=6) other causes for control patients. The cox-proportional hazard model of reoperation within 1 year indicated that the odds of reoperation were 3.1 (95% CI:1.4–7.0) and 2.2 (95% CI 0.96–5.3) times higher in the TNF-AI and DMARD groups, respectively, compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS Patients taking TNF-AIs before surgery were found to have a significantly higher rate of reoperation in the 1 year following surgery compared to controls. The higher rate of reoperation associated with TNF-AI use before spinal fusion surgery represents the potential for higher morbidity and costs for patient which is important to consider for both surgeon and patient in preoperative decision making.

Robotic-assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (RA-UKA) aims to improve accuracy of component placement. Studies have shown improvement in radiographic positioning/alignment with RA-UKA but have not addressed clinical outcome measures (COMs). The purpose of this study was to determine if RA-UKA is associated with improved early revision rates and functional outcome scores (FOS) compared with manual UKA. A systematic review of all English language articles from 1999 to 2019 on RA-UKA using Medline, EMBASE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases identified 277 studies. Seven (three randomized controlled trials) met inclusion criteria. Revision rates/FOS were aggregated for RA-UKA and manual UKA; a forest plot was constructed utilizing inverse variance/Mantel–Haenszel fixed-effects meta-analysis. The seven articles included a total of 363 RA-UKA patients and 425 manual UKA patients. Mean age was 66 ± 3.5 and 65 ± 4.0 years, and mean body mass index (BMI) was 26.8 ± 2.1 and 27.1 ± 1.5 kg/m2, respectively. Mean follow-up was 25.5 months (4.5–48) and 29.1 months (4.5–48) for RA-UKA and manual UKA, respectively. At latest follow-up, RA-UKA patients showed a 26% ± 12 improvement in COMs versus 24% ± 12 improvement for manual UKA patients (p = 0.6). The revision rate was 3% for both groups (p = 0.8); however, a meta-analysis of RCTs showed no difference. Robotic and manual UKAs offer comparable improvements in pain, FOS, and revision rates. The effects of follow-up duration, ceiling effects of COMs, and surgeon experience remain unknown. Future studies comparing robotic versus manual UKAs with longer term follow-up may inform further benefits of each, with respect to component durability, alignment, and functional improvement.

Background Bearing surface wear and osteolysis are major factors limiting the durability of total hip arthroplasty (THA). Second generation annealed highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) and ceramics were introduced to THA for their excellent wear rates. However, there is little data comparing the wear rates of metal and ceramic heads on second generation HXLPE. Methods Sixty patients who received a noncemented THA with a 32- or 36-mm delta ceramic head were matched with 60 THAs with a 32- or 36-mm metal head based on gender, head size, follow-up, and University of California, Los Angeles activity score. Linear and volumetric wear rates were measured. Results At mean 6-year follow-up, the mean linear wear rates were 0.012 mm/y (standard deviation [SD] 0.045; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.001-0.024) and 0.018 mm/y (SD 0.025; 95% CI 0.012-0.025) for the ceramic and metal groups, respectively (P = .724). The mean volumetric wear rates for the ceramic and metal head groups were 11.9 (SD 43.0; 95% CI 0.7-23.0) and 17.3 (SD 23.9; 95% CI 11.1-23.4), respectively. No significant differences were detectable in either the mean linear or volumetric wear rates (P = .380 and P = .398, respectively). Conclusion Second generation HXLPE had low wear rates and we were unable to detect a significant difference in wear rates with 32- or 36-mm metal and ceramic heads. We believe that this is due to the excellent tribological properties of second generation HXLPE. We continue to use ceramic as standard of care because of issues of trunnionosis with metal heads.

Cemented femoral fixation should be used for total hip arthroplasty (THA) for certain indications and is highly durable and reproducible. Our clinic in over 20 years has 90% survivorship. Proper technique is crucial for success and this article focuses on the details of the surgical technique for total hip arthroplasty by the senior author (C.S.R.). Key steps are achieving a dry field, good cement mantle, neutral stem position, and reproduction of anatomic geometry in terms of center of rotation, leg length, and offset. In addition to superior technique, wear resistant polyethylene and proper patient selection are other reasons for our excellent results.

Subchondral insufficiency fractures of the femoral head (SIFFH) are a cause of femoral head collapse leading to degenerative hip disease. SIFFH is often mistaken for osteonecrosis given similar clinical and radiographic features. These similarities often lead to missed or delayed diagnosis which can often delay or change management. The purpose of this article is to systematically review the spectrum of demographics, diagnostic and treatment options, including hip preservation in young patient populations. A systematic review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. All related peer-reviewed publications from January 1999 to January 2019 were reviewed using the following databases: Medline, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Science. The systematic review identified 54 articles, encompassing 482 patients (504 hips) diagnosed with SIFFH. One hundred and seventy-six (35%) males and 306 (63%) females were included, with a mean age of 53.6 ± 17.5 years and mean body mass index of 23.4 ± 4.0 kg/m2. Mean follow-up was 23.4 ± 15.9 months. Treatment decisions were 256 (55%) non-operative, 157 (34%) total hip arthroplasty (THA), 24 (5%) transtrochanteric anterior rotational osteotomy, 9 (2%) hip arthroscopy, 7 (2%) hip resurfacing, 3 (1%) bone grafting, 3 (1%) hemiarthroplasty and 1 (1%) tantalum rod insertion. Overall, 35% of SIFFH hips were converted to THA at latest follow-up. A majority of SIFFH patients had symptom resolution with non-operative management. Failure most often resulted in THA. In younger patients, hip preservation techniques have shown promising early results and should be considered as an alternative.

Background: Cultural differences between continents may also affect the outcome on interventions. This study compared an Asian and North American cohort of total knee replacement (TKR) patients. Questions/purposes: This study aims to compare the patient-reported outcome measures as well as a functional outcome after TKR between these two different patient populations with a different cultural societal background in two different countries. Patients and Methods: A retrospective study on two cohorts of 76 Asian TKR patients and 64 North American TKR patients were compared. Demographics, patient-reported outcome measures (Knee Society Score (KSS), Patient-Administered Questionnaire (PAQ), and Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC)), knee range of motion (RoM), and radiographic component position were compared. Results: The Asian cohort had more females compared to the North American and significantly worse preoperative RoM, and worse KSS function score and PAQ pain scores. The preoperative KSS knee score and WOMAC scores were comparable between the two groups. Postoperatively, the differences in WOMAC and KSS knee scores were significant, while KSS function and PAQ were comparable between groups. Conclusions: Even though Asian TKR patients had significantly worse preoperative scores, their postoperative outcomes were comparable to North Americans. The higher preoperative functional deficit and the higher pain levels in the Asian population might be due to cultural differences and/or socioeconomic reasons, which made Asian patients present with more severe conditions in the preoperative consultation for a possible surgical treatment compared to North Americans. More research is needed to investigate the difference between these cultural impacts on TKR outcomes. Level of Evidence: Level III/Retrospective cohort study.

Cam-type deformity of the proximal femur is a relative increase in the discrepancy of the femoral head-neck offset. The etiology is unknown; several conditions have been implicated in the development of abnormal proximal femoral anatomy. Recent evidence suggests that high-impact sports place stress on the immature physis during growth and may play an important role. Imaging is essential in the initial diagnostic workup, characterization of pathology, preoperative planning, and intraoperative decision making. Short-term and mid-term outcomes for arthroscopic osteoplasty of cam lesions for both isolated cam-type deformity and mixed cam-pincer femoroacetabular impingement have been well-described and are favorable.

Purpose:The goal of this study was to: (1) investigate the association between labral hypertrophy and radiographic and computed tomography (CT) imaging measurements of dysplasia in a femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) cohort; (2) evaluate the association between physical examination parameters suggestive of microinstability and labral hypertrophy.Methods:A retrospective case-control study was performed. Labral hypertrophy was defined as intraoperative labral width measuring greater >4 mm. A control cohort (NL) was matched to the cases. Physical examination parameters and preoperative radiographic and CT imaging studies were reviewed.Results:231 hip arthroscopies for FAI were reviewed from which 42 cases of labral hypertrophy were identified (LH). In the LH group there was significantly increased hip internal rotation at 90° hip flexion compared to normal controls (13.6° ± 1 0.7° LH vs. 9.3° ± 6.2° NL; p = 0.04). On plain radiographs, the mean lateral centre-edge angle was smaller in the LH group compared to the NL group (27.6° ± 6.00° LH vs. 31.6° ± 6.59° NL; p < 0.001) and the acetabular index was larger in the LH group compared to the NL group (6.61 ± 4.18 LH vs. 4.14 ± 6.13 NL; p = 0.04). On CT imaging coronal sagittal CEA was significantly lower in LH cases compared to NL control (31.8° ± 5.30° LH vs. 35.1° ± 7.67° NL; p = 0.01).Conclusions:We found that patients with labral hypertrophy have radiographic and CT measurements consistent with subtle but not absolute dysplasia and physical examination findings suggestive of microinstability. We propose that labral hypertrophy can be a useful clinical tool for identifying FAI patients on the dysplasia spectrum.

Background Concerns persist regarding the oxidative stability of annealed highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) and hence its wear performance especially long term in young and active patients. The purpose of this study is to assess the wear rates and clinical outcomes of a first-generation annealed HXLPE. Methods Forty-six patients (57 hips) with noncemented fixation, a mean age of 53 years, and a mean University of California Los Angeles activity score of 8 underwent primary total hip arthroplasty. A 28-mm femoral head against HXLPE liner was used in all cases. Linear wear rates were measured by 2 independent observers. Radiological and clinical assessments were recorded. Results At a mean of 14 years (range 10-17), the wear rate was 0.03 mm/y (SD ±0.02). There were no revisions for wear-related complications. Using revision for wear-related complications as an endpoint, the survivorship was 100% and we observed no osteolysis. Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index, patient administered questionnaire, and Hospital for Special Surgery hip scores were 91/100, 5/100, and 37/40 respectively. Conclusion This study confirms that a first-generation annealed HXLPE shows excellent wear and clinical results at 10-17 years in young and active patients. Oxidative degradation of an annealed HXLPE does not adversely affect wear and shows no other wear-related complications.

One of the anatomic goals of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is optimizing in the coronal and sagittal plane. Accurate alignments of both planes have been correlated to functional outcome and range of motion. There is a paucity of evidence on the accuracy of unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) in balancing biplanar knee alignment - specifically sagittal plane alignment. Because robotic assisted UKA has an advantage of more accurately manipulating sagittal plane for optimal alignment and kinematics based on pre-operative and intraoperative CT planning we assessed the accuracy.We reviewed the clinical and radiographic information of 94 robotic assisted UKA surgeries for balancing of sagittal and coronal knee anatomy using radiographic parameters, such as posterior condylar offset ratio (PCOR), posterior tibial slope (PTS), femoral-tibial angle, and joint line.In the sagittal plane, we found no significant difference between pre and postoperative PCOR values. As planned, PTS was significantly lower after UKA compared to the native knee (4.91° vs 2.28°; p0.0001). In the coronal plane, there was no significant difference in the joint line however pre and post-operative mechanical axis were significantly different (5.43°±2.58 of varus vs. 2.76°±2.14 of varus; p0.0001).This study attempts to quantify sagittal and coronal plane alignment after robotic assisted UKA. More attention should be paid to the role of sagittal plane alignment after UKA. We believe modifying posterior tibial slope, while maintaining PCOR is fundamental in achieving native kinematics and optimizing range of motion in the sagittal plane. This may be best-accomplished using robotic techniques for UKA.

Purpose The purpose of this investigation was to apply an arthroscopic shoulder and knee checklist in the evaluation of orthopedic resident arthroscopic skill efficiency and to demonstrate the use of a surgical checklist for assessing resident surgical efficiency over the course of a surgical rotation. Methods Orthopedic surgery residents rotating on the sports medicine service at our institution between 2011 and 2015 were enrolled in this study. Residents were administered a shoulder and knee arthroscopy assessment tool at the beginning and end of their 6-week rotation. The assessment tools consisted of checklist items for knee and shoulder arthroscopy skills. Residents were timed while performing these checklist tasks. The primary outcome measure was resident improvement as a function of time to completion for the checklist items, and the intervention was participation in a 6-week resident rotation with weekly arthroscopy didactics, cadaver simulator work, and operating room experience. A paired t test was used to compare means. Results Mean time to checklist completion during week 1 among study participants for the knee checklist was 787.4 seconds for the knee checklist and 484.4 seconds at the end of the rotation. Mean time to checklist completion during week 1 among study participants for the shoulder checklist was 1655.3 seconds and 832.7 seconds for the shoulder checklist at the end of the rotation. Mean improvement in time to completion was 303 seconds (p = 0.0006, SD = 209 s) and 822.6 seconds (p = 0.00008, SD = 525.2 s) for the arthroscopic knee and shoulder assessments, respectively. Conclusions An arthroscopic checklist is 1 method to evaluate and assess resident efficiency and improvement during surgical training. Among residents participating in this study, we found statistically significant improvements in time for arthroscopic task completion. Level of Evidence II

Background: Determining an accurate clinical diagnosis for nonarthritic hip pain may be challenging, as symptoms related to femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) or hip instability can be difficult to elucidate with current testing methods. In addition, commonly utilized physical examination maneuvers are static and do not include a dynamic or weightbearing assessment to reproduce activity-related symptoms. Therefore, implementing a dynamic assessment for FAI and hip instability could help to improve diagnostic accuracy for routine clinical examinations of patients with nonarthritic hip pain. Purpose: To assess the efficacy of a novel diagnostic foot progression angle walking (FPAW) test for identifying hip pathology related to FAI or hip instability. Study Design: Prospective cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: This prospective study included 199 consecutive patients who were evaluated for unilateral hip pain and who underwent FPAW testing along with standard physical examination testing. Demographic data, including age, sex and hip laterality, were collected from each patient. FPAW testing was performed with directed internal and external foot progression angles from their baseline measurements, with a positive test reproducing pain and/or discomfort. Comparisons were then made with flexion adduction internal rotation (FADIR) and flexion abduction external rotation (FABER) tests as the designated diagnostic standard examinations for FAI and hip instability, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity, along with the McNemar chi-square test for group comparison, were used to generate summary statistics. In addition, areas under the combined receiver operating characteristic curves (AUC) of test performance were calculated for both FPAW and the designated standard examination tests (FADIR, FABER). Radiographic imaging was used subsequently to confirm the diagnosis. Results: The average age of the study cohort was 35.4 ± 11.8 years, with 114 patients being female (57%). Positive internal FPAW testing demonstrated 61% sensitivity and 56% specificity for an FAI diagnosis, compared with the 96% sensitivity and 11% specificity seen with FADIR testing. Internal FPAW was less sensitive, yet more specific compared with FADIR ( P < .001). Combined testing had improved accuracy (AUC = 0.58; P < .05) compared with FADIR (AUC = 0.52; P = .21) or FPAW (AUC = 0.57; P = .057) alone. Positive external FPAW revealed 67% sensitivity and 70% specificity for hip instability, while FABER testing was 54% sensitive and 90% specific. External FPAW was significantly more specific but had similar sensitivity to FABER. Combined testing had greater accuracy (AUC = 0.77) compared with FABER (AUC = 0.70) or FPAW (AUC = 0.67) alone ( P < .001). Conclusion: The FPAW examination can be used as an adjunct examination to assist and improve the accuracy of the clinical diagnosis for FAI and hip instability.
