We implemented the Community Aerosol and Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CARMA) in both the high and low-top model versions of the Community Earth System Model Version 2 (CESM2). CARMA is a sectional microphysical model, which we use for aerosol in both the troposphere and stratosphere. CARMA is fully coupled to chemistry, clouds, radiation, and transport routines in CESM2. This development enables the comparison of simulations with a sectional (CARMA) and a modal (MAM4) aerosol microphysical model in the same modeling framework. The new implementation of CARMA has been adopted from previous work with some additions that align with the current CESM2 MAM4 implementation. The main updates include an interactive secondary organic aerosol description in CARMA using the volatility basis set (VBS) approach, updated wet removal, and the use of transient emissions of aerosols and trace gases. In addition, we implemented an alternative aerosol nucleation scheme in CARMA, which is also used in MAM4. Detailed comparisons of stratospheric aerosol properties after the Mt Pinatubo eruption reveal the importance of prescribing sulfur injections in a larger region rather than in a single column to better represent the observed evolution of aerosols. Both CARMA and MAM4 in CESM2 are able to represent stratospheric and tropospheric aerosol properties reasonably well compared to observations. Several differences in the performance of the two aerosol models show, in general, an improved representation of aerosols using the sectional aerosol model in CESM2. These include a better representation of the aerosol size distribution after the Mt Pinatubo volcanic eruption in CARMA compared to MAM4. MAM4 produces on average smaller aerosols and less removal than CARMA, which results in a larger total mass. Both CARMA and MAM4 reproduce stratospheric Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) within the errorbar of the observations between 2001 and 2020, except for recent larger volcanic eruptions that are overestimated by both model configurations. The CARMA background surface area density and aerosol size distribution in the stratosphere and troposphere compare well to observations, with some underestimation of the Aitken-mode size range. MAM4 shows shortcomings in reproducing coarse-mode aerosol distributions in the stratosphere and troposphere. This work outlines additional development needs for CESM2 CARMA to improve the model compared to observations in both the troposphere and stratosphere.

We present here results from the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP) simulations for the experiments G6sulfur and G6solar for six Earth system models participating in the Climate Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) Phase 6. The aim of the experiments is to reduce the warming that results from a high-tier emission scenario (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways SSP5-8.5) to that resulting from a medium-tier emission scenario (SSP2-4.5). These simulations aim to analyze the response of climate models to a reduction in incoming surface radiation as a means to reduce global surface temperatures, and they do so either by simulating a stratospheric sulfate aerosol layer or, in a more idealized way, through a uniform reduction in the solar constant in the model. We find that over the final two decades of this century there are considerable inter-model spreads in the needed injection amounts of sulfate (29 ± 9 Tg-SO2/yr between 2081 and 2100), in the latitudinal distribution of the aerosol cloud and in the stratospheric temperature changes resulting from the added aerosol layer. Even in the simpler G6solar experiment, there is a spread in the needed solar dimming to achieve the same global temperature target (1.91 ± 0.44 %). The analyzed models already show significant differences in the response to the increasing CO2 concentrations for global mean temperatures and global mean precipitation (2.05 K ± 0.42 K and 2.28 ± 0.80 %, respectively, for SSP5-8.5 minus SSP2-4.5 averaged over 2081–2100). With aerosol injection, the differences in how the aerosols spread further change some of the underlying uncertainties, such as the global mean precipitation response (−3.79 ± 0.76 % for G6sulfur compared to −2.07 ± 0.40 % for G6solar against SSP2-4.5 between 2081 and 2100). These differences in the behavior of the aerosols also result in a larger uncertainty in the regional surface temperature response among models in the case of the G6sulfur simulations, suggesting the need to devise various, more specific experiments to single out and resolve particular sources of uncertainty. The spread in the modeled response suggests that a degree of caution is necessary when using these results for assessing specific impacts of geoengineering in various aspects of the Earth system. However, all models agree that compared to a scenario with unmitigated warming, stratospheric aerosol geoengineering has the potential to both globally and locally reduce the increase in surface temperatures.

We revisit the meaning of stacking fault energy (SFE) and the assumptions of equilibrium dissociation of lattice dislocations in concentrated alloys. SFE is a unique value in pure metals. However, in alloys beyond the dilute limit, SFE has a distribution of values depending on the local atomic environment. Conventionally, the equilibrium distance between partial dislocations is determined by a balance between the repulsive elastic interaction between the partial dislocations and a unique value for SFE. This assumption is used to determine SFE from experimental measurements of dislocation splitting distances in metals and alloys, often contradicting computational predictions. We use atomistic simulations in a model NiCo alloy to study the dislocation dissociation process in a range of compositions with positive, zero, and negative average SFE and surprisingly observe a stable, finite splitting distance in all cases at low temperatures. We then compute the decorrelation stress and examine the balance of forces on the partial dislocations, considering the local effects on SFE, and observe that even the upper bound of SFE distribution alone cannot satisfy the force balance in some cases. Furthermore, we show that in concentrated solid solutions, the resisting force caused by interaction of dislocations with the local solute environment becomes a major force acting on partial dislocations. Here, we show that the presence of a high solute/dislocation interaction, which is not easy to measure and neglected in experimental measurements of SFE, renders the experimental values of SFE unreliable., The stacking fault energy is connected to the response of crystals to deformation. Here the authors report a computational study in a model NiCo system to demonstrate the key importance of the dislocation/solute interaction for the accurate assessment of stacking fault energy in alloys beyond dilute limit.

The precipitation of a recently introduced γ′-strengthened, Powder Metallurgy (PM) nickel superalloy is characterized and modeled. A range of experimental techniques are employed to capture aspects of the alloy microstructure necessary to calibrate a supersolvus, continuous cooling precipitation model. The proposed precipitation model framework incorporates a computationally efficient addition to the classical mean-field modeling approach that increases its ability to model dynamic, multi-modal γ′ burst events. The γ′ size predicted by the model shows good agreement with the experimental results spanning several orders of cooling rate magnitudes. The scalability of the modeling framework is then demonstrated in a quench trial on a diskette made from another PM nickel superalloy. The precipitation calculation is applied to the element integration points of a continuum Finite Element (FE) heat conduction simulation, where the latent heat generated from the precipitate evolution is accounted for. The results are compared to experimental findings using embedded thermocouple measurements and indicate that this approach is suitable for quantifying effects of γ′ precipitate evolution at the meso-scale and continuum length scales.

The γ and γ′ lattice parameter evolution of two commercial powder metallurgy (PM) nickel-base superalloys, ME3 and Rene’88DT, during cooling from above the γ′ prime solvus temperature is characterized using in-situ synchrotron X-ray Diffraction (XRD). The peak intensity deconvolution necessary for quantifying misfit between the two phases from XRD is accomplished by combining direct observation of several superlattice peak positions with thermodynamic modeling to quantify the intensity relationship between the overlapping phases. The misfit values obtained from the XRD measurements are compared to Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations of γ′ precipitate shapes for a subset of the experimental conditions where it can be observed that the exposures that result in cuboidal precipitate shapes are associated with the highest degrees of relative misfit. Time-resolved observations of the on-cooling lattice parameter evolution suggest a potential direct observation of the tertiary γ′ burst events in the two compositions within both the (100) superlattice peak and the (311) fundamental peak. The onset temperatures for the tertiary γ′ burst events for ME3 and Rene’88DT compositions for the cooling rates examined were found to be approximately 925 °C and 815 °C, respectively.

The northern high-latitude permafrost contains almost twice the carbon content of the atmosphere, and it is widely considered as a non-linear and tipping element in the Earth's climate system under global warming. Solar geoengineering is a means of mitigating temperature rise and reduce some of the associated climate impacts by increasing the planetary albedo, including permafrost thaw. We analyze the permafrost response as simulated by five earth system models (ESMs) under four future scenarios; two solar geoengineering scenarios (G6solar and G6sulfur) restore the global temperature from the high emission scenario (ssp585) levels to the moderate mitigation scenario (ssp245) levels via solar dimming and stratospheric aerosol injection. G6solar and G6sulfur nearly restore the northern high-latitude permafrost area from ssp585 levels to those under ssp245. But deeper active layer thickness and more exposed unfrozen soil organic carbon are produced due to robust residual high-latitude warming, especially over Eurasia. However, G6solar and G6sulfur accumulate more soil carbon over the northern high-latitude permafrost region due to enhanced CO2 fertilization effects relative to ssp245 and weakened heterotrophic respiration relative to ssp585. The asynchronous changes in soil carbon inputs and soil carbon decomposition directly result from decoupling of temperature and atmospheric CO2 concentration under solar geoengineering. The permafrost ecosystem remains a carbon sink throughout this century under all four scenarios, and solar geoengineering can delay the transition of northern high-latitude permafrost ecosystem from carbon sink to carbon source.

Recent experiments suggest that Suzuki segregation may play an important role during deformation in Ni-base superalloys at intermediate temperatures. In this study, a segregation isotherm model incorporating segregation enthalpy from ab initio calculations is proposed to predict quantitatively solute enrichment at superlattice intrinsic stacking faults (SISF) within the γ’ precipitates in Ni-base superalloys. A sublattice model is employed to describe the γ’ phase. A strong correlation between segregation enthalpy and solute enrichment is found. Even though the segregation enthalpy is relatively small, the predicted solute enrichment is consistent with experimental observations. The simulation predictions also suggest a strong cross-correlation among different alloying elements. For example, it is found that segregation of Co on the Ni sublattice at the fault draws segregation of Cr that has a positive segregation enthalpy at the fault without the presence of Co. Such quantitative predictions of equilibrium segregation of solutes at stacking faults in γ’ precipitates and its effect on the stacking fault energy could aid the investigation of deformation mechanisms and help the design of superalloys.

The prior studies have investigated the influence of internal hydrogen on dwell-fatigue behavior of near-α titanium alloys primarily in the lamellar microstructural condition. In the current study, the effects of internal hydrogen, in the range 10–230 ppm (by weight), on the dwell-fatigue behavior of Ti-6242Si alloy were investigated. The examined alloy had a bimodal microstructure comprising approximately 70 vol% primary α grains and 30 vol% transformed β regions. The dwell-fatigue life generally increased with increasing hydrogen content. The dwell-fatigue lives were longer by a factor of as high as 6 for high (≥150 ppm) hydrogen contents than for the low ( 150 ppm) hydrogen contents. Specifically, these facets were inclined at ∼8 – 17° from the basal plane. Therefore, the longer dwell-fatigue lives observed for the alloys with hydrogen contents ≥150 ppm could not be explained on the basis of any differences in crystallography of the facets at crack-initiation sites. The longer dwell-fatigue lives for higher hydrogen contents can be explained within the framework of time-dependent load shedding from the soft microtextured regions (MTRs) to the hard MTRs if the local stress redistribution at the soft MTR/hard MTR boundary due to the hold at maximum load is reduced with increasing hydrogen content.

γ-M23C6 carbide often forms at grain boundaries in creep-resistant steels and plays a crucial role in creep resistance by blocking microstructural changes at elevated temperatures. Given that the dislocations and stacking faults (SFs) in carbides may affect their stability, the observation of SF formation in γ-M23C6 using atomic-scale microscopy has implications for Cr-rich creep-resistant steels. Our analysis of SF energies (SFEs) derived from density functional theory calculations reveals that the SFEs are high, which suggests that the SF is not induced by external shear stress deformation but by lattice misfit between conjoined subgrains nucleated from the same austenite grain.

The Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 6 (WACCM6) is a major update of the whole atmosphere modeling capability in the Community Earth System Model (CESM), featuring enhanced physical, chemical and aerosol parameterizations. This work describes WACCM6 and some of the important features of the model. WACCM6 can reproduce many modes of variability and trends in the middle atmosphere, including the Quasi‐Biennial Oscillation, Stratospheric Sudden Warmings and the evolution of Southern Hemisphere springtime ozone depletion over the 20th century. WACCM6 can also reproduce the climate and temperature trends of the 20th century throughout the atmospheric column. The representation of the climate has improved in WACCM6, relative to WACCM4. In addition, there are improvements in high latitude climate variability at the surface and sea ice extent in WACCM6 over the lower top version of the model (CAM6) that come from the extended vertical domain and expanded aerosol chemistry in WACCM6, highlighting the importance of the stratosphere and tropospheric chemistry for high latitude climate variability.

The Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2) includes three main atmospheric configurations: the Community Atmosphere Model version 6 (CAM6) with simplified chemistry and a simplified organic aerosol (OA) scheme, CAM6 with comprehensive tropospheric and stratospheric chemistry representation (CAM6‐chem), and the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 6 (WACCM6). Both, CAM6‐chem and WACCM6 include a more comprehensive secondary organic aerosols (SOA) approach using the Volatility Basis Set (VBS) scheme and prognostic stratospheric aerosols. This paper describes the different OA schemes available in the different atmospheric configurations of CESM2 and discusses differences in aerosol burden and resulting climate forcings. Derived OA burden and trends differ due to differences in OA formation using the different approaches. Regional differences in Aerosol Optical Depth with larger values using the comprehensive approach occur over SOA source regions. Stronger increasing SOA trends between 1960 and 2015 in WACCM6 compared to CAM6 are due to increasing biogenic emissions aligned with increasing surface temperatures. Using the comprehensive SOA approach further leads to improved comparisons to aircraft observations and SOA formation of ≈143 Tg/yr. We further use WACCM6 to identify source contributions of OA from biogenic, fossil fuel, and biomass burning emissions, to quantify SOA amounts and trends from these sources. Increasing SOA trends between 1960 and 2015 are the result of increasing biogenic emissions aligned with increasing surface temperatures. Biogenic emissions are at least two thirds of the total SOA burden. In addition, SOA source contributions from fossil fuel emissions become more important, with largest values over Southeast Asia. The estimated total anthropogenic forcing of OA in WACCM6 for 1995–2010 conditions is −0.43 W/m2, mostly from the aerosol direct effect.

Using advanced aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with high-resolution energy-dispersive spectroscopy techniques, transitions to microstructure and composition occurring at a grain boundary (GB) crack-tip in Waspaloy after dwell-fatigue at 704 °C are characterized at the nano to atomic scale. The simple microstructure of this γ/γ′ superalloy, which enables elucidation of oxygen effect ahead of the oxide intrusion—dissolution of the precipitates fostering selective segregation of Al to the GB to form oxides—has been experimentally observed.

Decreases in stratospheric NOx associated with enhanced aerosol have been observed after large volcanic eruptions, for example, after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. While the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption was the last large explosive eruption, recent studies have shed light on the impacts of moderate-sized eruptions since the year 2000 on the global stratospheric aerosol budget. We use an ensemble of simulations from a coupled climate-chemistry model to quantify and analyze changes in NO and NO2 (NOx), N2O5, HNO3, ClO, and ClONO2 during periods of increased stratospheric volcanic aerosol concentrations since 2000. By using an ensemble approach, we are able to distinguish forced responses from internal variability. We also compare the model ensemble results to satellite measurements of these changes in atmospheric composition, including measurements from the Optical Spectrograph and Infrared Imaging Spectrometer on the Odin satellite and the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder. We find decreases in stratospheric NOx concentrations up to 20 hPa, consistent with increases in stratospheric HNO3 concentrations. The HNO3 perturbations also extend higher, up to 5 hPa, associated with periods of increased volcanic aerosol concentrations in both model simulations and observations, though correlations with volcanic aerosol are considerably higher in the model simulations. The model simulates increases in ClO at altitudes and magnitudes similar to the NOx reductions, but this response is below the detectable limit in the available observations (100 pptv). We also demonstrate the value of accounting for transport-related anomalies of atmospheric trace gases by regression onto N2O anomalies.
