Fluxgate magnetometers provide sensitive and stable measurements of the static and low frequency vector magnetic field. Fluxgates form a magnetic field measurement by periodically saturating a ferromagnetic core and the intrinsic magnetic noise of this material can determine the noise floor of the instrument. We present the results of an empirical experiment to understand the physical parameters that influence the intrinsic magnetic noise of fluxgate cores. We compare two permalloy alloys – the historical standard 6 % molybdenum alloy and a new 28 % copper alloy. We examine the influence of geometry using the historical standard 1” diameter spiral wound ring-core and a new stacked washer racetrack design. We evaluate the influence of material thickness by comparing 100 µm and 50 µm foils. Finally, we investigate heat treatments in terms of temperature and ramp rate and their role in both grain size and magnetic noise. The results of these experiments suggest that thinner foils, potentially comprising the copper alloy, manufactured into continuous racetrack geometry washers may provide excellent performance in fluxgate sensors.

IMPORTANCE: Pediatric sepsis definitions have evolved, and some have proposed using the measure used in adults to quantify organ dysfunction, a Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score of 2 or more in the setting of suspected infection. A pediatric adaptation of SOFA (pSOFA) showed excellent discrimination for mortality in critically ill children but has not been evaluated in an emergency department (ED) population. OBJECTIVE: To delineate test characteristics of the pSOFA score for predicting in-hospital mortality among (1) all patients and (2) patients with suspected infection treated in pediatric EDs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study took place from January 1, 2012, to January 31, 2020 in 9 US children’s hospitals included in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) Registry. The data was analyzed from February 1, 2020, to April 18, 2022. All ED visits for patients younger than 18 years were included. EXPOSURES: ED pSOFA score was assigned by summing maximum pSOFA organ dysfunction components during ED stay (each 0-4 points). In the subset with suspected infection, visit meeting criteria for sepsis (suspected infection with a pSOFA score of 2 or more) and septic shock (suspected infection with vasoactive infusion and serum lactate level >18.0 mg/dL) were identified. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Test characteristics of pSOFA scores of 2 or more during the ED stay for hospital mortality. RESULTS: A total of 3 999 528 (female, 47.3%) ED visits were included. pSOFA scores ranged from 0 to 16, with 126 250 visits (3.2%) having a pSOFA score of 2 or more. pSOFA scores of 2 or more had sensitivity of 0.65 (95% CI, 0.62-0.67) and specificity of 0.97 (95% CI, 0.97-0.97), with negative predictive value of 1.0 (95% CI, 1.00-1.00) in predicting hospital mortality. Of 642 868 patients with suspected infection (16.1%), 42 992 (6.7%) met criteria for sepsis, and 374 (0.1%) met criteria for septic shock. Hospital mortality rates for suspected infection (599 502), sepsis (42 992), and septic shock (374) were 0.0%, 0.9%, and 8.0%, respectively. The pSOFA score had similar discrimination for hospital mortality in all ED visits (area under receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.79-0.82) and the subset with suspected infection (area under receiver operating characteristic curve, 0.82; 95% CI, 0.80-0.84). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In a large, multicenter study of pediatric ED visits, a pSOFA score of 2 or more was uncommon and associated with increased hospital mortality yet had poor sensitivity as a screening tool for hospital mortality. Conversely, children with a pSOFA score of 2 or less were at very low risk of death, with high specificity and negative predictive value. Among patients with suspected infection, patients with pSOFA-defined septic shock demonstrated the highest mortality.

Single-chain nanoparticles are intriguing materials inspired by proteins that consist of a single precursor polymer chain that has collapsed into a stable structure. In many prospective applications, such as catalysis, the utility of a single-chain nanoparticle will intricately depend on the formation of a mostly specific structure or morphology. However, it is not generally well understood how to reliably control the morphology of single-chain nanoparticles. To address this knowledge gap, we simulate the formation of 7,680 distinct single-chain nanoparticles from precursor chains that span a wide range of, in principle, tunable patterning characteristics of cross-linking moieties. Using a combination of molecular simulation and machine learning analyses, we show how the overall fraction of functionalization and blockiness of cross-linking moieties biases the formation of certain local and global morphological characteristics. Importantly, using the total volume of simulation data, we illustrate and quantify the dispersity of morphologies that arise due to both the stochastic nature of collapse from a well-defined sequence as well as from the ensemble of sequences that correspond to a given specification of precursor parameters. Moreover, we also examine the efficacy of precise sequence control in achieving morphological outcomes in different regimes of precursor parameters. Overall, this work critically assesses how precursor chains might be feasibly tailored to achieve given SCNP morphologies and provides a platform to pursue future sequence-based design.

It relies principally on becoming aware of the self and of the core essence of wholes, be they collections of objects or sentences or ideas. But meaning is the end point constituting, according to the author, a drive more powerful even than the will to live (WO, 137). It lies beyond any given perspective. The work is presented as a dialogue between student and master; its 244 pages actually make for a quick and relatively easy read, not burdening the reader with jargon. It intends to be a popular presentation but without skimping on issues of relevance to philosophy.

Divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) cotransports ferrous iron and protons and is the primary mechanism for uptake of non-heme iron by enterocytes. Inhibitors are potentially useful as therapeutic agents to treat iron overload disorders such as hereditary hemochromatosis or β-thalassemia intermedia, provided that inhibition can be restricted to the duodenum. We used a calcein quench assay to identify human DMT1 (hDMT1) inhibitors. Dimeric constructs were made to generate more potent compounds with low systemic exposure. Direct block of DMT1 was confirmed by voltage clamp measurements. The lead compound, XEN602, strongly inhibits dietary iron uptake in both rats and pigs, yet has negligible systemic exposure. Efficacy is maintained for >2 weeks in a rat subchronic dosing assay. Doses that lowered iron content in the spleen and liver by >50% had no effect on the tissue content of other divalent cations except for cobalt. XEN602 represents a powerful pharmacological tool for understanding the physiological function of DMT1.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENTThis report introduces methodology to develop potent, gut-restricted inhibitors of DMT1 and identifies XEN602 as a suitable compound for in vivo studies. We also report novel animal models to quantify the inhibition of dietary uptake of iron in both rodents and pigs. This research shows that inhibition of DMT1 is a promising means to treat iron overload disorders.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate perceived image quality, confidence in identifying key velopharyngeal landmarks, and reliability of making velopharyngeal measures between 3-dimensional (3-D) and 2-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods and between T1-, T2-, and proton density (PD)-weighted sequences. Methods: Twelve healthy participants completed an MRI study. Three raters assessed overall image quality and their ability to identify key anatomic features within the images. A single rater evaluated the reliability of making measures between imaging methods and sequence types to determine if image type (2-D and 3-D) or image sequence (T1, T2, PD weighted) resulted in different values for key velopharyngeal landmarks. Results: An analysis of variance test revealed image quality was rated significantly different based on the scan type ( P < .001) and the sequence used ( P = .015). Image quality was rated higher among 2-D MR images compared to 3-D, and higher among T2 sequences compared to T1- and PD-weighted imaging methods. In contrast, raters favored 3-D sequences over 2-D sequences for identifying velopharyngeal landmarks. Measures of reliability revealed scan type significantly impacted 2 of the 6 variables but to a minimal degree; however, sequence type had no impact on measures of reliability across all variables. Conclusion: Results of the study suggest the scan type and sequence used are factors that likely do not impact the reliability of measures. Based on image quality, the recommended technique for velopharyngeal imaging would be using a 2-D T2-weighted technique. However, based on the ability to identify key landmarks, a 3-D T1- or PD-weighted technique was favored.

Background: Sports-related concussion is a worldwide problem. There is a concern that an initial concussion can cause prolonged subclinical disturbances to sensorimotor function that increase the risk of subsequent injury. The primary aim of this study was to examine whether a history of sports-related concussion has effects on static and dynamic balance performance in adolescent rugby players. Hypothesis: Dynamic balance would be worse in players with a history of concussion compared with those with no history of concussion. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Male adolescent rugby players aged 14 to 18 years from 5 schools were recruited before the start of the 2018-2019 playing season. Participants completed questionnaires and physical tests, including dynamic Y balance and single-leg static balance (eyes closed) tests, while performing single and dual tasks. Dynamic balance was assessed using inertial sensor instrumentation. Dependent variables were normalized reach distance and the sample entropy (SEn) of the 3 axes ( x, y, and z). Results: Of the 195 participants, 100 reported a history of concussion. Those with a history of concussion demonstrated higher SEn in all directions, with highest values during anterior (standardized mean difference [SMD], 0.4; 95% CI, 0.0-0.7; P = .027) and posteromedial (SMD, 0.5; 95% CI, 0.2-0.9; P = .004) reach directions compared with those with no history. There was no difference between groups (concussion history vs control) in traditional Y balance reach distances in the anterior or posteromedial directions or single-leg static balance during both single- ( P = .47) and dual-task ( P = .67) conditions. Conclusion: Adolescent rugby union athletes with a history of concussion had poorer dynamic balance during performance tasks compared with healthy controls. Static single-leg balance tests, either single or dual task, may not be sensitive enough to detect sensorimotor deficits in those with a history of concussion.

Site-specific protein modification is a widely-used biochemical tool. However, there are many challenges associated with the development of protein modification techniques, in particular, achieving site-specificity, reaction efficiency and versatility. The engineering of peptide ligases and their substrates has been used to address these challenges. This review will focus on sortase, peptidyl asparaginyl ligases (PALs) and variants of subtilisin; detailing how their inherent specificity has been utilised for site-specific protein modification. The review will explore how the engineering of these enzymes and substrates has led to increased reaction efficiency mainly due to enhanced catalytic activity and reduction of reversibility. It will also describe how engineering peptide ligases to broaden their substrate scope is opening up new opportunities to expand the biochemical toolkit, particularly through the development of techniques to conjugate multiple substrates site-specifically onto a protein using orthogonal peptide ligases.

We examine the impacts of potential artificial intelligence (AI) regulations on managers’ perceptions on ethical issues related to AI and their intentions to adopt AI technologies. We conduct a randomized online survey experiment on more than a thousand managers in the United States. We randomly present managers with different proposed AI regulations, and ask about ethical issues related to AI and their intentions related to AI adoption. We find that information about AI regulation increases manager perception of the importance of safety, privacy, bias/discrimination, and transparency issues related to AI. However, there is a tradeoff; regulation information reduces manager intent to adopt AI technologies. Moreover, information about regulation increases manager intent to spend on developing AI strategy including ethical issues at the cost of investing in AI adoption, such as providing AI training to current employees or purchasing AI software packages. Polymer-protein hybrids are intriguing materials that can bolster protein stability in non-native environments, thereby enhancing their utility in diverse medicinal, commercial, and industrial applications. One stabilization strategy involves designing synthetic random copolymers with compositions attuned to the protein surface, but rational design is complicated by a vast chemical and composition space. Here, we report a strategy to design protein-stabilizing copolymers based on active machine learning, facilitated by automated material synthesis and characterization platforms. The versatility and robustness of the approach is demonstrated by the successful identification of copolymers that preserve, or even enhance, the activity of three chemically distinct enzymes following exposure to thermal denaturing conditions. Although systematic screening results in mixed success, active learning appropriately identifies unique chemistries for each enzyme. Overall, this work broadens our capabilities to design fit-for-purpose synthetic copolymers that promote or otherwise manipulate protein activity, with extensions towards the design of robust polymer-protein hybrid materials.

Melanesians were pejoratively labelled the dark-skinned islanders by European explorers in the 1830s, an act that has shaped understandings of the region and its peoples down to the present day. In this brief essay, we attempt to demonstrate that since the new millennium, aided by digital tools and the Internet, young Melanesians have localized Black Atlantic music forms in order to assert agency, no matter how limited, in relation to their experiences of rejection and marginalization within the global system. The musical creation of new identity spaces is briefly considered through three condensed case studies that exemplify core contemporary Melanesian social concerns: (1) Pacific climate change, (2) Melanesian cultural identity in relation to pressures of modernity and globalization and (3) independence for West Papua. Increasingly, we propose, such expressions are becoming a significant factor in the ongoing reshaping in Melanesia of what it means to belong in the world while remaining culturally distinct.

The absence of male supervision in a home might explain why adolescent males are more likely to commit sexual misconduct misdemeanor offenses, and felony sex offenses. For this study, the social control theory was the perspective that could explain why adolescent males may be prone to delinquent or criminal behavior. The study included a sample of 539 adolescent males. The study was a quantitative descriptive design utilizing data from Florida Department of Juvenile Justices’ male offenders’ Positive Achievement Change Tool (PACT) transcripts. Sexual misconduct misdemeanor offenses and felony sex offenses inferential statistics from PACT was used to compare differences between adolescent male offenders who had a mother and father present at home and adolescent male offenders who did not have a father at home. International Business Machines Corporation IBM® SPSS® software was used to provide inferential statistical data. A chi-square statistical method was used to analyze and interpret the quantitative data. The quantitative analysis was a descriptive analysis. The results suggested there was no statistical significance. However, the study illustrated that sexual offenses statistically were different from non-sexual offenses, and further research should be conducted to determine why there are differences.

Background The incidence of adolescent suicide is rising in the United States, yet we have limited information regarding short-term prediction of suicide attempts. Our aim was to identify predictors of suicide attempts within 3-months of an emergency department (ED) visit. Methods Adolescents, ages 12-17, seeking health care at 13 pediatric EDs (Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network) and one Indian Health Service Hospital in the United States were consecutively recruited. Among 10,664 approached patients, 6,448 (60%) were enrolled and completed a suicide risk survey. A subset of participants (n = 2,897) was assigned to a 3-month telephone follow-up, and 2,104 participants completed this follow-up (73% retention). Our primary outcome was a suicide attempt between the ED visit and 3-month follow-up. Results One hundred four adolescents (4.9%) made a suicide attempt between enrollment and 3-month follow-up. A large number of baseline predictors of suicide attempt were identified in bivariate analyses. The final multivariable model for the full sample included the presence of suicidal ideation during the past week, lifetime severity of suicidal ideation, lifetime history of suicidal behavior, and school connectedness. For the subgroup of adolescents who did not report recent suicidal ideation at baseline, the final model included only lifetime severity of suicidal ideation and social connectedness. Among males, the final model included only lifetime severity of suicidal ideation and past week suicidal ideation. For females, the final model included past week suicidal ideation, lifetime severity of suicidal ideation, number of past-year nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) incidents, and social connectedness. Conclusions Results indicate that the key risk factors for adolescent suicide attempts differ for subgroups of adolescents defined by sex and whether or not they report recent suicidal thoughts. Results also point to the importance of school and social connectedness as protective factors against suicide attempts.

The Bijupira and Salema oil fields in the Campos Basin, Brazil, are tied-back to the FPSO Fluminense. The design life of FPSO Fluminense was 15 years, first oil was in 2003. In 2017, Shell as operator and partner Petrobras decided to execute a 5 year life extension project to extend production until 2023. Although the life extension project encompassed many vessel, moorings, and production facility renovation projects, this paper will focus on the repairs of cracks in the wetted surfaces of the hull. Crack repairs were executed during production operations using a novel methodology designed to eliminate the risks of diving operations, while significantly reducing the costs of the offshore hull repairs. Earlier attempts using traditional methods with divers to deploy cofferdams were unsuccessful due to the high safety risk of diving in the persistent 2-plus knot Brazil current. In early 2019, the operator and a team of engineering consultants concluded that a novel repair approach that eliminates diving operations was feasible. The concept methodology was developed, one element of which included positioning and securing a cofferdam over a cracked area of the FPSO side shell. The cofferdam was lowered from the FPSO deck while being guided into position and secured in place by guide wires passed through holes in the side shell. Water ingress into the void spaces was eliminated via a hot tap and winching system that penetrates the side shell from inside the tank. Following the concept development, a step-by-step procedure was written, vetted with the classification society and subsequently used in the tendering process to select an execution contractor. The selected execution contractor constructed a test tank that replicated the actual hull structure. The prototype was used to test the method at full scale, including procedures, communication protocols, and equipment. The learnings were incorporated into both the procedures and equipment. This process was repeated as a training exercise for the offshore personnel and HSSE leaders prior to offshore execution. The execution contractor was mobilized offshore in the first quarter of 2020 and successfully performed the hull repairs. The job was completed as planned, including removal and replacement of several independent sections of stiffened hull plating, which included both flat and curved surfaces. Based upon successful execution, this method has been proven to be a technology that can be used to eliminate the risks of diving and to significantly reduce the costs of future offshore hull repairs. This paper will address the methodical approach taken to develop and integrate the various elements of this novel technology developed jointly by the operator and consultants, as well as the phases testing, pre-mobilization surveys, project execution, and other activities that drive success.

Background Sport-related head and neck injuries, including concussion, are a growing global public health concern with a need to explore injury risk reduction strategies such as neck exercises.Objectives To systematically review the literature to investigate: (1) the relationship between neck strength and sport-related head and neck injuries (including sport-related concussion (SRC); and (2) whether neck exercise programs can reduce the incidence of (a) sport-related head and neck injuries; and (b) SRC.Methods Five databases (Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science) and research lists of included studies were searched using a combination of medical subject headings and keywords to locate original studies which reported the association between incidence of head and/or neck injury and neck strength data, or included a neck exercise intervention either in isolation or as part of a more comprehensive exercise program.Results From an initial search of 593 studies, six were included in this review. A narrative synthesis was performed due to the heterogeneity of the included studies. The results of two observational studies reported that higher neck strength, but not deep neck flexor endurance, is associated with a lower risk of sustaining a SRC. Four intervention studies demonstrated that injury reduction programs that included neck exercises can reduce the incidence of sport-related head and neck injuries including SRC.Conclusion Consideration should be given towards incorporating neck exercises into injury reduction exercise programs to reduce the incidence of sport-related head and neck injuries, including SRC.SystematicReviewRegistration PROSPERO(registrationnumber:194217).

Participation in collision sports such as rugby union has inherent risk of injury. The aim of this study was to examine injury patterns and risk factors in adolescent rugby players (U15 years). A prospective injury surveillance study was undertaken involving 26 schools (599 male rugby players, mean age 14.7years). Data were collected over the 2016/17 playing season, with injuries classified by body part and diagnosis. We explored the association between risk factors (demographic/biometric; injury history, protective equipment, training profile, level of play) using cox proportional hazard models with time to injury as the dependent variable. Nearly, 30% of players (178/599) suffered at least one injury. Injury incidence is estimated at 14.7 injuries/1000 match hours. Most injuries occurred in the tackle situation (64.6%, 135/209). Common injury sites were head/face (n = 95, 45.5%), ankle (n = 21, 10.0%), or wrist/hand (n = 15, 7.2%). Concussion (n = 79, 37.8%), wrist/ hand fractures (n = 19, 9.1%), or ankle sprains (n = 16, 7.6%) were the most common diagnoses. Seven concussions (8.9%) resulted in more than 28 days absence from play. A higher risk of injury was associated with: previous concussion (AHR 1.45; 95% CI 1.02 to 2.06), and any previous injury (AHR 1.85; 95% CI 1.23 to 2.78). One in three U15 rugby players sustained an injury over a single playing season. Concussion remains a concern in this age group and should be prioritized in future research.

To address the tradeoff between mechanical strength and Li+ conductivity in Poly(Ethylene Oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes, a rigid nonconductive polymer is frequently added to the electrolyte via blending or copolymerization. The ionic conductivity of mixed PEO electrolytes is generally lower than that of unmixed PEO electrolytes. The suppressed ionic conductivity is attributed to the reduced segmental mobility and connectivity of the conductive PEO cites. Most experimental systems make it difficult to decouple the two mechanisms and accurately examine their impact on conductivity. We compare two symmetric polymer mixtures (50:50 wt%): a miscible polymer blend PEO/PMMA and a disordered block copolymer (BCP) PEO-b-PMMA, both with the same amount of Li salt. Because their chemical and physical properties are the same, changes in ionic conductivity can be attributed solely to local changes in PEO network connectivity. We discover that the mixtures' immediate Li+ solvation sites (+ transport within and across PEO clusters at the appropriate length scales. This new understanding of network connectivity in polymer electrolyte mixtures is critical for the design of future multiphase polymer electrolyte systems.

This chapter argues for the full, respectful curricular inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music in order to promote a more balanced and equitable social and cultural vision of the nation-state in Australian schools. It challenges views that claim Indigenous cultures have been irretrievably lost or are doomed to extinction, as well as the fixation on musical authenticity. We propose that the gradual broadening of Indigenous musical expressions over time and the musical renaissance of the new millennium have created an unprecedented opportunity for current music educators to experience the educative power of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music. This means that culturally nonexposed music teachers can employ familiar musical-technical approaches to the music even as they begin to more fully investigate the music’s cultural-contextual meanings. The chapter considers issues that impinge on the music’s educative power, especially those relating to its definition, its intended audiences, and pedagogies. It aims to help clear the way for the classroom to become an environment in which students can sense the depth and vitality of contemporary Australian Indigenous music.

We use a rich data set of Spanish manufacturing firms from 1990 to 2016 to shed new light on how automation in a high-income country affects trade and multinational activity involving lower-income countries. By exploiting supply side improvements in the capabilities of robots over time, as described in patents, we show that contrary to the speculation that automation will cause 're-shoring', the use of robots in Spanish firms actually had a positive impact on their imports from, and number of affiliates in, lower-income countries. Robot use causes firms to expand production, increase productivity and increases the probability that they start importing from, or opening affiliates in, lower-income countries. The sequencing of automation and offshoring has important consequences for the impact of automation, however. For firms that were offshoring to lower-income countries before they starting to use robots, robot adoption had no effect on the value of imports from lower-income countries, but decreased the share of imports sourced from lower-income countries. By contrast, for firms that had not already off-shored to lower-income countries, robot adoption made them more likely to start doing so. We show that these findings can be explained in a framework that incorporates firm heterogeneity, the choice between automation, offshoring and performing tasks at home and where automation and offshoring both involve upfront fixed costs, such that their sequencing matters.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with ageing, but the detailed causal relationship between the two is still unclear. We review the major phenomenological manifestations of mitochondrial age-related dysfunction including biochemical, regulatory and energetic features. We conclude that the complexity of these processes and their inter-relationships are still not fully understood and at this point it seems unlikely that a single linear cause and effect relationship between any specific aspect of mitochondrial biology and ageing can be established in either direction.

A series of mechanism-based heteroaryl urea fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitors with fused bicyclic diamine cores is described. In contrast to compounds built around a piperazine core, most of the fused bicyclic diamine bearing analogs prepared exhibited greater potency against rFAAH than the human enzyme. Several compounds equipotent against both species were identified and profiled in vivo.

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypotheses that minority children with long-bone fractures are less likely to (1) receive analgesics, (2) receive opioid analgesics, and (3) achieve pain reduction. METHODS: We performed a 3-year retrospective cross-sectional study of children RESULTS: In 21 069 visits with moderate-to-severe pain, 86.1% received an analgesic and 45.4% received opioids. Of 8533 patients with reassessment of pain, 89.2% experienced ≥2-point reduction in pain score and 62.2% experienced optimal pain reduction. In multivariable analyses, minority children, compared with non-Hispanic (NH) white children, were more likely to receive any analgesics (NH African American: adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.72 [95% confidence interval 1.51–1.95]; Hispanic: 1.32 [1.16–1.51]) and achieve ≥2-point reduction in pain (NH African American: 1.42 [1.14–1.76]; Hispanic: 1.38 [1.04–1.83]) but were less likely to receive opioids (NH African American: aOR 0.86 [0.77–0.95]; Hispanic: aOR 0.86 [0.76–0.96]) or achieve optimal pain reduction (NH African American: aOR 0.78 [0.67–0.90]; Hispanic: aOR 0.80 [0.67–0.95]). CONCLUSIONS: There are differences in process and outcome measures by race and ethnicity in the emergency department management of pain among children with long-bone fractures. Although minority children are more likely to receive analgesics and achieve ≥2-point reduction in pain, they are less likely to receive opioids and achieve optimal pain reduction.

In many growth models, economic growth arises from people creating ideas, and the long-run growth rate is the product of two terms: the effective number of researchers and their research productivity. We present a wide range of evidence from various industries, products, and firms showing that research effort is rising substantially while research productivity is declining sharply. A good example is Moore’s Law. The number of researchers required today to achieve the famous doubling every two years of the density of computer chips is more than 18 times larger than the number required in the early 1970s. Across a broad range of case studies at various levels of (dis)aggregation, we find that ideas—and in particular the exponential growth they imply — are getting harder and harder to find. Objectives To establish patterns of subsequent injury in U18 rugby, to quantify the burden of within season injury recurrence. Design Secondary analysis of prospective data. Setting 28 Schools in Ireland. Participants 825 male rugby players (aged 15–18 years). Main outcome measures Subsequent injuries were classified as: new, local or recurrent (same site and type as index injury). All recurrent injuries were sub-grouped by body part and diagnosis. Burden was based on frequency, days lost and injury proportion ratios. Results A total of 426 injuries were eligible for analysis, of which, 121 were subsequent injuries. The majority of subsequent injuries involved a different body part than their index injury. There were n = 23 cases of within season recurrence. 78% of recurrences occurred within 2 months of return to play. Recurrent injuries comprised 5% of all injuries and their cumulative time loss was 1073 days. Recurrent injury to the ankle ligaments, lumbar muscles and concussions carried the greatest burden. Conclusion The burden of recurrent injury in U18 rugby is lower than in the professional game. However, this population could benefit from targeted secondary prevention efforts including reconsideration of return-to-play protocols for ankle sprain, lumbar muscles and potentially concussion.

In the 19th century Melanesians were pejoratively labelled black by European maritime explorers (mela = black; nesia = islands). Emerging scholarship on the Black Pacific focuses on historical and contemporary identifications and articulations between Oceanian and African diasporic peoples, cultures and politics based upon shared Otherness to colonial occupiers. This essay contributes to such scholarship by presenting a perspective from Melanesia with a focus on music, a popular form of countercolonial expression. It examines in two broad phases person-to-person and person-to-text encounters with Atlantic-based notions of Black Power and negritude. The Pacific War serves as a dividing line and turning point, during and following which such encounters began to intensify. The discussion links these African diasporic intellectual traditions/discourses/epistemologies with that of indigenitude, that is, performed global expressions of Indigenousness, through allusions to Black transnationalism and the ways both movements address the “inferiority confusion” that arose from experiences of colonisation. It demonstrates how in the last 35 years in particular, Melanesians have worked to invert the demeaning intention of their colonial racial construction and, in the process, have helped to create what may now be thought of as the Black Pacific.

We provide stylized facts on the existence and dynamics over time of the large firm wage premium for four countries. We examine matched employer-employee micro-data from Brazil, Germany, Sweden, and the UK, and find that the large firm premium exists in all these countries. However, we uncover substantial differences among them in the evolution of the wage premium over the past several decades. Moreover, we find no clear evidence of common cross-country industry trends. We conclude by discussing potential explanations for this heterogeneity, and proposing some questions for future work in the area.
