The roll out of 5G has been mainly characterized by its distinct support for vertical industries, especially manufacturing. Leveraging synergies among these two worlds, namely production facilities and network systems, is a fundamental aspect to enable flexibility and economic viability in future factories. This work highlights the potential for intelligent networking and advanced machine learning-based solutions in 5G-and-beyond systems in the context of Industry 4.0 and flexible manufacturing. The intersection thereof allows to create versatile machines and dynamic communication networks that can adapt to changes in the manufacturing process, factory layout and communication environment, supporting real-time interaction between humans, machines, and systems. We present a vision and corresponding framework by introducing the network-aware and production-aware principles, outlining results achieved in this context and summarizing them into three key use cases. Finally, we discuss a selection of remaining open challenges in private networks as well as give an outlook on future 6G research directions.

This paper introduces a physics-informed machine learning approach for pathloss prediction. This is achieved by including in the training phase simultaneously (i) physical dependencies between spatial loss field and (ii) measured pathloss values in the field. It is shown that the solution to a proposed learning problem improves generalization and prediction quality with a small number of neural network layers and parameters. The latter leads to fast inference times which are favorable for downstream tasks such as localization. For many wireless communication applications, traffic pattern modeling of radio signals combined with channel effects is much needed. While analytical models are used to capture these phenomena, real world non-linear effects (e.g. device responses, interferences, distortions, noise) and especially the combination of such effects can be difficult to capture by these models. This is simply due to their complexity and degrees of freedom which can be hard to explicitize in compact expressions. In this paper, we propose a more model-free approach to jointly approximate an end-to-end black-boxed wireless communication scenario using software-defined radio platforms and optimize for an efficient synthesis of subsequently similar 'pseudo-radio-signals'. More precisely, we implement a generative adversarial network based solution that automatically learns radio properties from recorded prototypes in specific scenarios. This allows for a high degree of expressive freedom. Numerical results show that the prototypes' traffic patterns jointly with channel effects are learned without the introduction of assumptions about the scenario or the simplification to a parametric model.

Two main trends characterize today's communication landscape and are finding their way into industrial facilities: the rollout of 5G with its distinct support for vertical industries and the increasing success of machine learning (ML). The combination of those two technologies open the doors to many exciting industrial applications and its impact is expected to rapidly increase in the coming years, given the abundant data growth and the availability of powerful edge computers in production facilities. Unlike most previous work that has considered the application of 5G and ML in industrial environment separately, this paper highlights the potential and synergies that result from combining them. The overall vision presented here generates from the KICK project, a collaboration of several partners from the manufacturing and communication industry as well as research institutes. This unprecedented blend of 5G and ML expertise creates a unique perspective on ML-supported industrial communications and their role in facilitating industrial automation. The paper identifies key open industrial challenges that are grouped into four use cases: wireless connectivity and edge-cloud integration, flexibility in network reconfiguration, dynamicity of heterogeneous network services, and mobility of robots and vehicles. Moreover, the paper provides insights into the advantages of ML-based industrial communications and discusses current challenges of data acquisition in real systems.

The next generation of wireless networks will face different challenges from new scenarios. The main contribution of this paper is to show that Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM), as a baseline of flexible circular filtered multicarrier systems, can be used as a framework to virtualize the PHY service for the upper layers of 5G networks. This framework opens the possibility to apply software-defined network principles to produce software-defined waveforms capable of addressing the requirements of future mobile networks. Hence, a block oriented concept will be used to provide the modulation service, emulating different flavors of waveforms designed to go beyond the well-established Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) principles, in scenarios where they perform best. The virtual physical layer (PHY) service opens the opportunity to have a fast and dynamic evolution of the infrastructure, as applications change over time. The presented unified modulation concept contributes with future research directions to address burst and continuous transmissions, referencing basic approaches for synchronization and advanced receiver design that can be exploited in future for the whole frame structure design and channel estimation strategies.

Future wireless communication systems are demanding a more flexible physical layer. GFDM is a block filtered multicarrier modulation scheme proposed to add multiple degrees of freedom and cover other waveforms in a single framework. In this paper, GFDM modulation and demodulation will be presented as a frequency-domain circular convolution, allowing for a reduction of the implementation complexity when MF, ZF and MMSE filters are employed in the inner and outer receiver operation. LTE and LTE-Advanced have been optimized to deliver high bandwidth pipes to wireless users. The transport mechanisms have been tailored to maximize single cell performance by enforcing strict synchronism and orthogonality within a single cell and within a single contiguous frequency band. Various emerging trends reveal major shortcomings of those design criteria: 1) The fraction of machine-type-communications (MTC) is growing fast. Transmissions of this kind are suffering from the bulky procedures necessary to ensure strict synchronism. 2) Collaborative schemes have been introduced to boost capacity and coverage (CoMP), and wireless networks are becoming more and more heterogeneous following the non-uniform distribution of users. Tremendous efforts must be spent to collect the gains and to manage such systems under the premise of strict synchronism and orthogonality. 3) The advent of the Digital Agenda and the introduction of carrier aggregation are forcing the transmission systems to deal with fragmented spectrum. 5GNOW is an European research project supported by the European Commission within FP7 ICT Call 8. It will question the design targets of LTE and LTE-Advanced having these shortcomings in mind and the obedience to strict synchronism and orthogonality will be challenged. It will develop new PHY and MAC layer concepts being better suited to meet the upcoming needs with respect to service variety and heterogeneous transmission setups. Wireless transmission networks following the outcomes of 5GNOW will be better suited to meet the manifoldness of services, device classes and transmission setups present in envisioned future scenarios like smart cities. The integration of systems relying heavily on MTC into the communication network will be eased. The per-user experience will be more uniform and satisfying.
