Graphene is one of the most extensively studied 2D materials, exhibiting extraordinary mechanical and electronic properties. Although many years have passed since its discovery, manipulating single graphene layers is still challenging using standard resist-based lithography techniques. Recently, it has been shown that it is possible to etch graphene directly in water-assisted processes using the so-called focused electron-beam-induced etching (FEBIE), with a spatial resolution of ten nanometers. Nanopatterning graphene with such a method in one single step and without using a physical mask or resist is a very appealing approach. During the process, on top of graphene nanopatterning, we have found significant morphological changes induced in the SiO 2 substrate even at low electron dose values (<8 nC/μm 2 ). Fe-Co alloys are the most important soft magnetic materials, which are successfully used for a wide range of applications. In this work, the magnetic properties of lanthanide-substituted (Fe 0.65 Co 0.35 ) 0.95 ( RE 2 O 3 ) 0.05 ( RE = La, Nd, and Sm) nanoparticles, prepared by mechanical alloying, are reported. Our comprehensive studies (X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry, SQUID magnetometry and differential scanning calorimetry) have revealed different properties, depending on the dopant type. The RE 2 O 3 addition led to a decrease in the crystallite size and to an increase in the internal microstrain. Moreover, because of the high grain fragmentation tendency of RE 2 O 3 , the cold welding between Fe-Co ductile particles was minimized, indicating a significant decrease in the average particle size. The parent Fe 0.65 Co 0.35 alloy is known for its soft ferromagnetism. For the La-substituted sample, the magnetic energy product was significantly lower (0.450 MG·Oe) than for the parent alloy (0.608 MG·Oe), and much higher for the Sm-substituted compound (0.710 MG·Oe). A study of Ti 3 Al 1- x Si x C 2 ( x = 0 to x = 1) MAX-phase alloys is reported. The materials were obtained from mixtures of Ti 3 AlC 2 and Ti 3 SiC 2 powders with hot pressing sintering technique. They were characterised with X-ray diffraction, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, and magnetoresistance measurements. The results show a good quality crystal structure and metallic properties with high residual resistivity. The resistivity weakly varies with Si doping and shows a small, positive magnetoresistance effect. The magnetoresistance exhibits a quadratic dependence on the magnetic field, which indicates a dominant contribution from open electronic orbits. The Debye temperatures and Sommerfeld coefficient values derived from specific heat data show slight variations with Si content, with decreasing tendency for the former and an increase for the latter. Experimental results were supported by band structure calculations whose results are consistent with the experiment concerning specific heat, resistivity, and magnetoresistance measurements. In particular, they reveal that of the s-electrons at the Fermi level, those of Al and Si have prevailing density of states and, thus predominantly contribute to the metallic conductivity. This also shows that the high residual resistivity of the materials studied is an intrinsic effect, not due to defects of the crystal structure.

Temperature dependent 55 Mn NMR study of Sm 0.55 Sr 0.45 MnO 3 is reported. Previous bulk magnetization measurements have shown that below T C ~ 125 K the sample is ferromagnetic metallic (FMM) and above T C it is charge ordered and insulating. In present report, we show that from zero-field NMR a single line double-exchange (DE) signal is observed at temperatures up to 139 K, which is due to a presence of FMM clusters also above T C . The intensity of the DE line follows the temperature dependence of the magnetization measured at 0.01 T. When a magnetic field up to 2 T is applied at 139 K (i.e. 14 K above T C ), a strong increase in NMR intensity of the DE line is observed indicating that content of FMM regions increases. This reveals that metallicity is induced in the material by the applied magnetic field and explains the observed colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect at the microscopic level. The observation agrees with previous results, which confirm that the percolation of the FMM clusters is responsible for the CMR effect. The shift of the resonant frequency in the applied field is three times smaller compared to decrease expected from gyromagnetic ratio, which indicates an antiferromagnetic coupling between the FMM clusters.

Bismuth nanostructures of initial lateral size of about 150 nm were successfully electromigrated at room temperature under high vacuum conditions through the application of voltage ramps and accurate control of their conductance. The imaging of the nanogap formation was followed by scanning electron microscopy. An appropriate design of the initial Bi nanostructures has made the electromigration process of semimetallic Bi feasible. Beyond the intrinsic interest in the generation of Bi structures with size tailored at the nanoscale, remarkable features have been observed in the time-dependent conductance curves of the Bi nanoconstrictions. In particular, sub-quantum conductance plateaus can be detected before the rupture of the constriction. An alternative procedure to study the transport through Bi nanoconstrictions has been explored using a focused-Ga-ion etching process with simultaneous control of the conductance. This second approach confirms the transport behavior observed in electromigrated Bi nanoconstrictions.

In this work, we use anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates to build NiFe magnetic nanohole arrays. We perform a thorough study of their magnetic, electrical and magneto-transport properties (including the resistance R(T), and magnetoresistance MR(T)), enabling us to infer the nanohole film morphology, and the evolution from granular to continuous film with increasing thickness. In fact, different physical behaviors were observed to occur in the thickness range of the study (2 nm < t < 100 nm). For t < 10 nm, an insulator-to-metallic crossover was visible in R(T), pointing to a granular film morphology, and thus being consistent with the presence of electron tunneling mechanisms in the magnetoresistance. Then, for 10 nm < t < 50 nm a metallic R(T) allied with a larger anisotropic magnetoresistance suggests the onset of morphological percolation of the granular film. Finally, for t > 50 nm, a metallic R(T) and only anisotropic magnetoresistance behavior were obtained, characteristic of a continuous thin film. Therefore, by combining simple low-cost bottom-up (templates) and top-down (sputtering deposition) techniques, we are able to obtain customized magnetic nanostructures with well-controlled physical properties, showing nanohole diameters smaller than 35 nm.

Control of the motion of domain walls in magnetic nanowires is at the heart of various recently proposed three-dimensional (3D) memory devices. However, fabricating 3D nanostructures is extremely complicated using standard lithography techniques. Here we show that highly pure 3D magnetic nanowires with aspect-ratios of ~100 can be grown using focused electron-beam-induced-deposition. By combining micromanipulation, Kerr magnetometry and magnetic force microscopy, we determine that the magnetisation reversal of the wires occurs via the nucleation and propagation of domain walls. In addition, we demonstrate that the magnetic switching of individual 3D nanostructures can be directly probed by magneto-optical Kerr effect.

The present paper demonstrates the feasibility of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) under high magnetic fields up to 26 T and low temperatures down to 5 K on the ID24 energy-dispersive XAS beamline of the ESRF. The pulsed magnetic field set-up, entirely developed at the ESRF, is described as well as the beamline set-up, the synchronization and the measurement procedure. It allows field strengths up to 30 T. Finally, as an example, we report a recent XMCD study at the Re L2 and L3 absorption edges of the double perovskite Sr2CrReO(6).
