The present study aimed to compare the effect of 24 sessions of stretching exercises performed before resistance exercises versus resistance exercise sessions on the hemodynamic responses of sedentary individuals. Thirty volunteers (26.76±6.29 years old, 81.56±10.66 kg body weight, 1.74±0.07 m height, and 26.74 ±.82 kg/m2 body mass index) participated in this study. After performing the test and retest of 10 maximum repetitions (10RM), the volunteers were divided into 3 groups: a) stretching exercise + resistance exercise (SE+RE); b) resistance exercise (RE) and c) control group (CG). The RE was composed of 3 sets of 10 repetitions at 80% of 10RM with a 2-minute interval between sets of RE preceded or not by 3 sets of 30 seconds of SE. Blood pressure (BP) was assessed using an automatic oscillometric device at session 0, session 12 and session 24 of training. Systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), mean BP (MAP), heart rate (HR), double product (DP) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were measured after 10 minutes of rest. Comparison between groups was performed by Kruskal Wallis test with Bonferroni correction and 5% significance (p < 0.05). DBP showed significant difference when comparing session 0 vs. session 24 (p = 0.006) for the RE protocol. MAP decreased significantly after session 24 for the RE protocol compared to the other protocols (p = 0.016) and difference between session 0 vs. session 24 (p = 0.022). Significant difference was found in SE + RE protocol (p = 0.029) compared to session 0 vs. session 24 GC. This study showed that RE improved the DBP and MAP response and that the combination of SE+RE improved the SpO2 response after 24 training sessions. This study aimed to determine the total contents of copper, iron, and zinc in camapu and protein fractions by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry. Firstly, lipid removal was performed using chloroform and methanol (2:1). Protein fractions were obtained after sequential extraction using four extractors (water, 0.5 mol L-1 sodium chloride, 50% acetic acid v v-1 and 0.05 mol L-1 sodium hydroxide). The camapu sample and protein fractions were digested in a cavity-microwave oven with diluted nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. The accuracy of the procedure was evaluated using the addition and recovery method in the digests and protein extracts. All the elements were determined in the protein fractions. Levels of Cu, Fe, and Zn ranged from 0.07 to 0.5 mg kg-1 were found in the lipid fraction. The residue presented higher iron content compared to other elements. Higher Cu and Zn contents were found associated with albumin. All elements studied were found in the protein fractions, and the total protein concentration determined in each protein fraction was 5.74 mg kg-1 (albumins), 0.28 mg kg-1 (globulins), 4.46 mg kg-1 (glutelins 1) and 0.46 mg kg-1 (glutelins 2).

O Instrumento Brasileiro para Avaliação da Cultura Organizacional (IBACO) é um dos mais utilizados no contexto brasileiro e, por esta razão, ele foi escolhido. O objetivo deste trabalho foi revalidar o IBACO, segundo a percepção dos funcionários de um hospital privado pernambucano. Sendo assim, desenvolveram-se os procedimentos centrais de adaptação dos itens do IBACO, que juntamente com questões sociais e demográficas compuseram o questionário usado neste estudo. Realizou-se uma pesquisa quantitativa e de natureza descritivo-exploratória. Foram coletados 305 questionários válidos e, para as análises dos dados, realizou-se as etapas necessárias a análise fatorial exploratória (AFE). A revalidação do instrumento apontou os seguintes resultados: a) os 2 construtos que compõem o instrumento da cultura organizacional (valores e práticas organizacionais) passaram a ter 6 dimensões cada; b) o construto valores organizacionais passou a ter 28 itens enquanto o construto práticas organizacionais ficou com 23 itens; e c) com essa reorganização dos itens e dimensões do instrumento, ele se mostrou mais claro e mais aderente às dimensões que formavam para a cultura do hospital privado investigado, podendo ser utilizado em outros contextos hospitalares similares.

The present study investigated the sources of variability in the water quality of surface springs that supply the Metropolitan Region of Belém (Pará, Brazil), as well as the treated water produced by the main water treatment station in the region. Data provided by Companhia de Saneamento do Pará were used, referring to physical-chemical and bacteriological analyzes carried out in the period from 2010 to 2020. In addition, precipitation data were considered in this study, in units of mm of rain, obtained by consulting the database of the National Institute of Meteorology. The application of principal component analysis, as an exploratory data analysis tool, allowed the grouping of the most relevant parameters of the results and proved to be efficient in reducing the data set, explaining more than 65% of the total variance, in all objects of study. Thus, it was possible to observe a general profile of the quality of surface water investigated, and, in this way, demonstrate the impact of urban pressure on the environment, as well as the need for maintenance and conservation of surface water resources.

In 2018, an American biotechnology company developed a test that could identify if an embryo created through in-vitro fertilisation would become a person with a low intelligence quotient. As the same approach could be used to predict if an embryo will become a person with an above average intelligence quotient, such tests raise questions about reproductive choice and what sort of children prospective parents should have the freedom to create through assisted reproductive technology. Much of the literature on the ethics of selecting for non-disease characteristics was published prior to the development of any test for such characteristics. This article reviews and applies these arguments in the context of the Australian regulatory framework and the technology that is currently available: a test for intelligence quotient. It examines the concept of reproductive liberty and how this concept should be balanced against the welfare of the future child. The article also considers reasons extraneous to the future child’s welfare and asks if any such reasons are good enough to restrict the reproductive liberty of prospective parents.

The aim of the present study was to verify the acute effect of remote and local IPC application before isometric strength, lumbar and lower limbs manual grip, and upper limbs and trunk muscle endurance tests in recreationally trained individuals. The volunteers were 22 men (age: 26.2 ± 6.9 years, weight: 83.4 ± 11.6 kg, height: 175.4 ± 5.8 cm, BMI: 27.1 ± 3.5 kg.m-2) recreationally trained (4.6 ± 3.3 years) in resistance exercise (RE) that performed three visits on non-consecutive days (three to seven days apart). This was a crossover and randomized study. In the first visit, the Informed Consent Form (ICF) was signed, according to the Declaration of Helsinki, and the PAR-Q was completed. Immediately after, anthropometrics was assessed, followed by familiarization with the tests. At the second and third visits, the volunteers were randomly assigning to the following experimental protocols: a) IPC protocol with 220 mmHg + isometric strength and muscular endurance tests (IPC); or b) control protocol (CON) isometric strength and muscular endurance tests. Isometric handgrip strength was significantly higher in IPC compared to CON (61.59±10.18 vs. 58.95±10.84, 4.47Δ%, p=0.01). Lumbar isometric strength was significantly higher in IPC compared to CON (165.36±22.56 vs. 156.77±22.81, 5.48Δ%, p= 0.01) and lower limbs isometric strength was significantly higher in IPC compared to CON (163.09±22.92 vs. 154.86±21.55, 5.31Δ%, p=0.01). Push-up repetitions were significantly higher in IPC compared to CON (43±12.80 vs. 38.91±13.03,10.51Δ%, p=0.01). The trunk flexion repetitions were significantly higher in the IPC compared to the CON (46.05±13.28 vs. 40.23±11.18, 14.46Δ%, p=0.01). In conclusion, local IPC significantly increased upper limb isometric strength and muscle endurance compared to the control protocol. Remotely, IPC significantly increased lower limb isometric strength, lumbar and trunk flexion muscular endurance compared to the control protocol. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi analisar o comprometimento organizacional por meio do modelo multidimensional de Meyer e Allen (1991), segundo a percepção de mulheres recepcionistas de consultórios médicos em Belo Horizonte-MG. Caracterizou-se esta pesquisa como de método misto (COLLIS; HUSSEY, 2006) e do tipo descritivo-exploratório (VERGARA, 2009). Utilizou-se para análise dos dados quantitativos o software Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) e a análise de conteúdo (AC) (BARDIN, 2008) para apreciação das entrevistas. Na investigação quantitativa, constatou-se o predomínio da dimensão afetiva do comprometimento organizacional com média no nível moderado mais alto. Por outro lado, mesmo que nas análises qualitativas as dimensões afetiva e instrumental tenham sido predominantes nos relatos das mulheres entrevistadas, ao final, é por meio da dimensão afetiva que as recepcionistas permanecem na organização, significando que elas gostam e fazem seu trabalho por amor, valorizando o ambiente de trabalho e os relacionamentos interpessoais conquistados.

O comprometimento organizacional pode ser considerado fator importante para indivíduos e organizações, influenciando as vivências no trabalho e na produtividade. No mesmo sentido, as percepções temporais interferem na maneira pela qual os indivíduos lidam com o trabalho e conduzem suas rotinas. Considerando as idiossincrasias que permeiam os jovens trabalhadores, este estudo teve como objetivo analisar como se encontram configuradas as dimensões do comprometimento organizacional em relação às percepções temporais de jovens trabalhadores assistidos pelo ESPRO - Ensino Social Profissionalizante - na cidade de Recife (PE). Para tanto, foi realizada uma pesquisa com caráter descritivo, exploratório e abordagem quantitativa com amostra de 229 respondentes, selecionados pelo critério de acessibilidade. O instrumento de pesquisa compreende perguntas acerca de informações demográficas e pessoais, escala de comprometimento organizacional (Meyer & Allen, 1991) e escala de percepções temporais (Bluedorn & Jaussi, 2007). A análise dos dados foi realizada por meio de estatística descritiva e bivariada. Evidenciou-se que, apesar da presença de correlações significativas no que tange ao comprometimento organizacional e às percepções temporais, essas são consideradas baixas e agrupadas principalmente na dimensão do comprometimento afetivo. Esse tipo de comprometimento foi predominante entre os jovens trabalhadores (média=3,62). Sobre as percepções temporais, estas apresentaram maiores correlações com características pessoais e os jovens revelaram preferências por comportamentos monocrônicos, rápidos e pontuais, com ênfase no passado, sendo predominantes as vivências de arrastamento relacionadas à liderança, o que pode estar ligado à situação de vulnerabilidade social e ao momento de transição desta fase da vida.

The intensity damages caused by nutritional deficiency in growing plants can vary with nutrients. The effects caused by nutrient omission in the plant nutritional efficiency in relation to the absorption and use of the missing nutrient, and the reasons why these damages reflect in other nutrients have not yet been reported in the culture of scarlet eggplant. A better understanding of the nutritional mechanisms involved may clarify why certain nutrients cause greater limitations than other during plants growth. Thus, this study was designed with the aim of evaluating the damages caused by macronutrients deficiency in the culture of scarlet eggplant in the accumulation of these nutrients, nutritional deficiency, plants growth and in visual symptoms. The experiment was carried out in a controlled environment where plants were cultivated in a hydroponic system. Treatments consisted of supplying a complete Hoagland and Arnon solution (CS), and other nutrient solutions with individual omissions of nitrogen (-N), phosphorus (-P), potassium (-K), calcium (-Ca), magnesium (-Mg) and sulphur (-S). When a nutrient deficiency arose, nutritional analyses, growth and visual symptoms were analyzed. The omissions of N, S and K in the nutrient solution resulted in lower accumulation of all macronutrients in both the above and below ground biomass. Individual omissions resulted in nutritional imbalances with reflexes in the absorption efficiencies and use of the missing nutrient, as well as of other nutrients, revealing that the metabolism involves multiple nutritional interactions. Losses of nutritional efficiencies of macronutrients caused detrimental effects on plants growth, with reduced height, stem diameter, number of leaves, leaf area, and biomass production in above ground and below ground. From the losses in production in above ground biomass, the order of macronutrients limitation was N, S, K, Ca, Mg, and P, with reductions of 99, 96, 94, 76, 51 and 46%, respectively, in comparison to plants cultivated in CS. The most limiting nutrients were N, S, and K, seen that its deficiencies affected the metabolism of all other nutrients. This study demonstrates the importance of an adequate nutritional management of N, S, and K in the cultivation of scarlet eggplant.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the quality of life of hospitalized pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE), and compare with a group of healthy pregnant women (HP). METHODS: This was an observational cross-sectional study conducted among 58 pregnant women; 28 of them had preeclampsia and 30 were healthy. The WHOQOL-Bref questionnaire, which was divided into four aspects: physical, psychological, social, and environmental, was applied to each subject. Resumo Estudo sobre as chances de sucesso eleitoral do Poder Executivo local com base na evolução do perfil de candidatos e eleitos. Foram analisados os resultados das eleições municipais ocorridas em 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012 e 2016 segundo sexo, idade, escolaridade e ocupação, que revelassem fatores de influência para o perfil dos prefeitos vitoriosos. A metodologia envolveu pesquisa documental e bibliográfica. Tendo como base teoria de campo e capital político de Bourdieu (2011), foram analisados dados disponibilizados pelo Tribunal Superior Eleitoral mediante teste do qui-quadrado e de regressão logística. Os resultados indicaram o sexo e a ocupação declarada como fatores de influência determinantes no perfil dos eleitos. Observou-se diminuição das chances de sucesso eleitoral de candidatos do sexo masculino ou oriundos de carreira política nas eleições ocorridas em 2012 e em 2016.

Objective: To assess the feasibility and safety of a physiotherapy protocol applied to pregnant women with preeclampsia. Methods: Randomized, controlled, single-blind feasibility study, with 24 hospitalized pregnant women with preeclampsia. The intervention group received one session of the physiotherapy. The control group remained under the routine care of the hospital. The primary outcomes were Doppler velocimetry, cardiotocography, and maternal–fetal hemodynamics. Secondary outcomes were pain and anxiety assessed before and after the interventions. A mixed effects linear regression model was used, and the data were compared with the level of significance at 5%. Results: The baseline characteristics of the participants were homogeneous between groups. Resistance index of the Middle Cerebral Artery (MAC) and Umbilical Artery (UA) and cardiotocography did not change significantly. The systolic blood pressure (SBP) increased 4.90 mmHg in the control group and 0.22 mmHg in the intervention group. The diastolic blood pressure (DBP) increased 1.34 mmHg in the control group and decreased 0.40 mmHg in the intervention group. The middle bood pressure (MBP) increased 4.66 mmHg in the control group while there was a decrease of 0.09 mmHg in the intervention group, without statistical difference. Heart rate (HR) decreased 0.94 bpm in the control group; whereas, in the intervention group, there was an increase of 6.30 bpm. The pain reduced clinically 2 points after the intervention. The anxiety reduced clinically in both the groups (−1.26 in the intervention group and −2.17 in the control group). Conclusion: The protocol applied in the intervention group is feasible and safe for both mother and fetus. Both groups showed clinical reduction in the levels of anxiety; whereas, pain was clinically reduced in the intervention group.

Analisou-se como se encontra o estresse ocupacional de modo geral e, em específico, nas categorias sexo, faixa etária de idade, tempo de trabalho e vínculo de trabalho, em funcionários de um hospital universitário de Belo Horizonte-MG. Trata-se de um estudo de caso de abordagem quantitativa e a utilização da análise bivariada dos dados. Já na avaliação comparativa entre níveis de estresse ocupacional e categorias demonstrou que o sexo feminino possui maior propensão ao estresse.

Specific inhibition of NADPH oxidases (NOX) and NO-synthases (NOS), two enzymes associated with redox stress in tumor cells, has aroused great pharmacological interest. Here, we show how these enzymes distinguish between isomeric 2′- and 3′-phosphate derivatives, a difference used to improve the specificity of inhibition by isolated 2′- and 3′-phosphate isomers of our NADPH analogue NS1. Both isomers become fluorescent upon binding to their target proteins as observed by in vitro assay and in vivo imaging. The 2′-phosphate isomer of NS1 exerted more pronounced effects on NOS and NOX-dependent physiological responses than the 3′-phosphate isomer did. Docking and molecular dynamics simulations explain this specificity at the level of the NADPH site of NOX and NOS, where conserved arginine residues distinguished between the 2′-phosphate over the 3′-phosphate group, in favor of the 2′-phosphate.

Brazil is the largest passion fruit producer in the world. However, the yield is still considered low, and the cultivation of unsuitable varieties is one of the factors directly influencing this trait. As a consequence, breeding studies have been developed with the purpose of obtaining genetic materials with high yield, high fruit quality, and disease resistance. The objective of this study was to characterize and quantify the genetic variability in 18 genotypes of yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims) with different levels of yield and disease resistance, using RAPD markers. The RAPD markers were obtained from 10 decamer primers and converted into a matrix of binary data. Estimations of the genetic dissimilarities between different genotypes and cluster analysis were performed. A total of 58 markers were generated, 63.80% of which were polymorphic. The genetic distances among genotypes varied from 0.040 to 0.354 and genotypes were subdivided into at least 5 groups of similarity. The dispersion graphs showed a low clustering tendency for yield and resistance to different diseases (septoriosis, anthracnose, scab, bacterial spot, and passion fruit woodiness disease). These results demonstrate a high genetic variability among the evaluated genotypes, which is valuable information when selecting promising materials to be used per se or as parents in genetic breeding programs.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of depression and correlate clinical and demographic characteristics in pregnant women assisted by the public health system in the city of Pelotas, RS, Brazil. METHOD: We performed a cross-sectional study focused on pregnant women assisted by the public health service. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to screen for depression. RESULTS: In a sample of 1,264 pregnant women aged 12-46 years, 21.1% (n = 255) presented a depressive episode during pregnancy. The presence of depression was associated with older age, lower education, lack of a cohabiting partner, not being primiparous, planned pregnancy, abortion thoughts, psychological or psychiatric treatment, smoking and alcohol consumption during pregnancy, and stressful events. CONCLUSION: Pregnant women assisted by the Brazilian public health system presented a high prevalence of depression. Psychiatric history, lack of support, and stressful events increase the probability of antenatal depression.OBJETIVO: Estimar a prevalência de depressão, bem como fatores clínicos e características demográficas associados em grávidas assistidas por meio do sistema público de saúde da cidade de Pelotas, RS, Brasil. MÉTODO: Foi realizado um estudo transversal tendo como população-alvo as grávidas assistidas pelo sistema público de saúde. Para o rastreio da depressão foi utilizada a Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. RESULTADOS: Em uma amostra de 1.264 mulheres grávidas com idade de 12 a 46 anos, 21,1% (n = 255) apresentaram episodio depressivo durante a gravidez. A presença de depressão foi associada com ter mais idade, menor grau educacional, não morar com companheiro, não ser primigesta, ter planejado a gestação, idealizar o aborto, ter feito tratamento psicológico ou psiquiátrico, consumir tabaco e/ou álcool durante a gravidez e ter sofrido algum evento estressor. CONCLUSÃO: As mulheres grávidas acompanhadas pelo sistema público de saúde apresentaram alta prevalência de depressão. História psiquiátrica, baixo suporte e eventos estressores aumentam a probabilidade de depressão no período pré-parto.

O estudo tem como objetivo mensurar a auto-estima e fatores associados em gestantes atendidas pelo Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) na cidade de Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. É do tipo transversal, tendo-se entrevistado 560 gestantes nos meses de maio a novembro de 2006, nos ambulatórios e enfermarias dos hospitais universitários e do centro de atendimento da Prefeitura Municipal. Dentre as gestantes atendidas, 62,9% receberam o diagnóstico de alto-risco. Para avaliação da auto-estima foi utilizada a escala de Rosenberg. Na amostra total a média de pontos na escala foi de 9,2 e o desvio-padrão de 4,6. As variáveis associadas positiva e significativamente com auto-estima foram idade, nível de escolaridade e nível econômico. Já as variáveis percepção de risco à saúde do bebê e número de gestações mostraram-se associadas negativamente à auto-estima. Além disso, as gestantes com condição gestacional de alto-risco têm uma auto-estima mais elevada quando comparadas com as de baixo-risco.This study analyzes self-esteem and associated factors in pregnant women treated by the Unified National Health System (SUS) in the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Using a cross-sectional design, 560 pregnant women were interviewed from May to November 2006. The interviews were held in specific locations like University outpatient clinics and hospital wards and a center run by the city government. A full 62.9% were diagnosed as high-risk pregnancies. Mean self-esteem according to the Rosenberg scale was 9.2 (SD = 4.6). Variables showing a positive, significant association with self-esteem were age, schooling, and income. Perception of risk to the unborn infant's health and parity were both negatively associated with maternal self-esteem. These high-risk pregnant women also showed higher self-esteem than low-risk pregnant women.

Adherence is crucial for public health program effectiveness, though the benefits of increasing adherence must ultimately be weighed against the associated costs. We sought to determine the relationship between investment in community health worker (CHW) home visits and increased attendance at cervical cancer screening appointments in Cape Town, South Africa.We conducted an observational study of 5,258 CHW home visits made in 2003-4 as part of a community-based screening program. We estimated the functional relationship between spending on these visits and increased appointment attendance (adherence). Increased adherence was noted after each subsequent CHW visit. The costs of making the CHW visits was based on resource use including both personnel time and vehicle-related expenses valued in 2004 Rand. The CHW program cost R194,018, with 1,576 additional appointments attended. Adherence increased from 74% to 90%; 55% to 87%; 48% to 77%; and 56% to 80% for 6-, 12-, 24-, and 36-month appointments. Average per-woman costs increased by R14-R47. The majority of this increase occurred with the first 2 CHW visits (90%, 83%, 74%, and 77%; additional cost: R12-R26).We found that study data can be used for program planning, identifying spending levels that achieve adherence targets given budgetary constraints. The results, derived from a single disease program, are retrospective, and should be prospectively replicated.

Background and Objective: Reduced functional capacity, dyspnea, fatigue, and changes in body composition are common in patients with post‐COVID‐19 syndrome (PCS), and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation may improve these parameters. Thus, the present study verified the effects of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation (respiratory, aerobic, and resistance muscle training) on submaximal exercise tolerance, dyspnea, fatigue, and body composition. Methods: This controlled and randomized clinical trial applied a six‐week outpatient intervention protocol in individuals over 18 years old (n = 33) with a diagnosis of COVID‐19 confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. These individuals were allocated to cardiopulmonary rehabilitation (n = 17) or control groups (i.e., educational lectures; n = 16). The cardiopulmonary rehabilitation group performed respiratory, aerobic, and resistance muscle training. Submaximal exercise tolerance, dyspnea, fatigue, and body composition were assessed before and after the protocol. Results: After 6 weeks, the cardiopulmonary rehabilitation group increased the tolerance to submaximal exercise, with a difference of 100.46 m (95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.40–193 m) in the distance walked on the six‐minute walk test, reduced dyspnea (−1.45, 95% CI: −1.98–−0.92) in the modified Medical Research Council, and increased 0.63 kg (95% CI: 0.09–1.18 kg) of muscle mass in the upper limbs compared with the control group. Conclusion: The six‐week cardiopulmonary rehabilitation protocol improved functional capacity, reduced dyspnea, and increased muscle mass in the upper limbs in individuals with PCS. Thus, these results supported the protocol use in this population and encourage further studies to assess its effectiveness in a large sample. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
