Six cases of venous angioma of the brain, a rare vascular malformation, were studied by means of computed tomography (CT), angiography, and other tests. In each case, angiography demonstrated the typical normal arterial phase and the network of abnormal veins that converge on a single large draining vein. In three cases, the CT scans showed rounded areas of high density not unlike neoplasms in appearance. In the other cases, the CT scan demonstrated the enlarged draining vein only. The CT scan findings, although not specific, may alert the radiologist to the possibility of this lesion and may lead to its demonstration through angiography.

Forty children with enlarged heads were studied by pneumoencephalography and/or computer assisted tomography (CAT). Ventricular dimensions from CAT scans of 70 normal children formed a control group. In the group of 40 children with neither hydrocephalus nor brain tumor, CAT more reliably showed ventricular enlargement in patients with neurologic impairment.

Seven patients with Hickman/Broviac catheters implanted via the percutaneous subclavian route are reported to have had catheter separation and embolization; one catheter implanted via cephalic vein cutdown also separated. The method of percutaneous subclavian catheter insertion is briefly described, and the mechanism of catheter separation is discussed. Percutaneous insertion routes the silicone catheter between the clavicle and first rib, producing compressive/shearing force which can cause the catheter to break--usually after several months. Embolized catheter fragments can be retrieved with a percutaneous transfemoral venous snare. The described complication represents a 1% incidence. Recommendations to minimize this problem include: placement of subclavian puncture at or lateral to midclavicular line; chest x-rays at 2- to 3-month intervals to identify catheter indentation at the thoracic inlet; early removal of catheters for patients with radiologic evidence of significant catheter compression.

Mammographic features of 22 pathologically proved cases reflecting disorders of the male breast are described. Two patterns of gynecomastia were observed: a dendritic pattern seen in association with breast enlargement for 6 months or more, and a more florid triangular pattern, seen in association with breast enlargement of recent onset. Male breast carcinoma may be distinguished from gynecomastia by its eccentric location, spiculation, and, in some cases, calcification or involvement of the skin and nipple. Benign conditions simulating carcinoma included a case of drug-induced gynecomastia and a case of inflamed inclusion cyst.
