Abstract

After more than forty years since the 1980 Irpinia-Lucania earthquake, with this Special Issue "The 23 November 1980 Irpinia-Lucania, Southern Italy Earthquake: Insights and Reviews 40 Years Later" we revisit this milestone geological and seismological event, bringing together the latest views and news on this earthquake, with the aim of improving the dissemination of wide-ranging information on this remarkable case history. This earthquake struck Irpinia-Lucania region (Lucania is also called Basilicata; Southern Italy) on 23 November 1980 (Ms 6.9, Io X MCS) [1,2], and it is remembered in Italy not only for being the strongest earthquake recorded in the last 100 years causing devastation of entire regions and severe loss of human life, but also for the destruction of the cultural heritage in the epicentral area. It was felt throughout Italy, from Sicily in the South, to Emilia Romagna and Liguria in the North (Figure 1) causing damage in over 800 localities spread in the regions of Campania and Basilicata with a total of 75,000 houses destroyed and 275,000 seriously damaged. As supplementary material we propose a publication, in which there is the first preliminary attribution of macroseismic intensity for the 1980 earthquake: "Il terremoto del 23-11-1980. Rilievo Macrosismico Stato di Avanzamento al 27-1-1981" [29] and some topographic maps of the effects induced by the 1980 IrpiniaLucania earthquake, which were plotted in the field. Soon after the November 23, 1980 Irpinia - Lucania earthquake, several groups of geologists of the CNR-PFG projects, mapped the coseismic geological effects in a wide portion of the epicentral area. We include some of the original sketch of topographic maps (form 1:25.000 topographic maps of Istituto Geografico Militare, I.G.M., 1955) saved as a historical record of the time, that the Professor Paolo Scandone, as leader of PFG project, made available many years after the earthquake on which the coseismic effects of the 1980 earthquake were mapped. On the excerpts of the topographic maps mainly earthquake-induced fractures are shown, and in some cases it has been marked occurrence of landslides as well as portions of earthquake-induced faults. Although it must be pointed out that many researchers at the time did not believe that these faults were of tectonic origin but ascribed all of them either to pure gravitative sliding or to debris compactation [11]. Only a few Italian researchers interpreted as due tectonic origin the fractures occurred along the Piano di Pecore on Mt. Marzano (186 Colliano IISW), or Sele Valley and at Pantano di S. Gregorio Magno (198 Buccino, I, NE; 199 Vietri di Potenza, IV, NW) [9,10], as later documented by several researchers who reconstructed the end to end seismogenic fault segments [12-17]. Abstract

We provide a database of the coseismic geological surface effects following the Mw 6.5 Norcia earthquake that hit central Italy on 30 October 2016. This was one of the strongest seismic events to occur in Europe in the past thirty years, causing complex surface ruptures over an area of >400 km2. The database originated from the collaboration of several European teams (Open EMERGEO Working Group; about 130 researchers) coordinated by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. The observations were collected by performing detailed field surveys in the epicentral region in order to describe the geometry and kinematics of surface faulting, and subsequently of landslides and other secondary coseismic effects. The resulting database consists of homogeneous georeferenced records identifying 7323 observation points, each of which contains 18 numeric and string fields of relevant information. This database will impact future earthquake studies focused on modelling of the seismic processes in active extensional settings, updating probabilistic estimates of slip distribution, and assessing the hazard of surface faulting.

Abstract

The dreadful scenarios of effects caused by the recent catastrophic seismic events in very different parts of the world (from Eastern Asia to Chile and Haiti) are renewing the longlasting global debate among seismologists, geologists and engineers about the best practices and tools to achieve the most complete and reliable seismic hazard assessment. In this note we focus on three recent events that have clearly demonstrated once more that the vibratory ground motion, although a serious source of direct damage, it is by no means the only parametr that should be considered, being most damages caused by the coseismic geological effects, either directly linked to the earthquake source or provoked by the ground shaking ("Earthquake Environmental Effects", EEE). Surface faulting, regional uplift and subsidence, tsunamis, liquefaction, ground resonance, landslides, ground failure, are indeed controlled or induced by the local geological setting.

Abstract

In the last twenty years, the interest of scientific community towards Earthquake Environmental Effects (EEEs) has progressively increased especially in the frame of INQUA - International Union for Quaternary Research. In 2007 the ESI 2007 (Environmental Seismic Intensity scale) was published, a new intensity scale based only on EEEs resulting by a revision process taking about 8 years, and promoted by several geologists, seismologists and engineers coordinated by Servizio Geologico d'Italia (now ISPRA). The ESI 2007 scale integrates traditional intensity scales, and allow to define seismic intensity based on the entir e scenario of effects. In 2011 the EEE Catalogue was launched, a web infrastructure realized by ISPRA for data collection of EEEs induced by recent, historical and paleoearthquakes at global level. Cataloguing and classifying EEEs has allowed to compare past seismic events and to identify the most vulnerable areas in term of site effect. Some strong earthquakes occurred in the last years have unfortunately pointed out the primary role played by geological effects in the scenario of damages, confirming that seismic hazard cannot be evaluated only based on vibratory ground motion but also on the knowledge about EEEs. This volume provides the state of knowledge about these topics, with the aim to promote the use of the ESI 2007 intensity scale, that has been translated into ten languages, and the EEE Catalogue, as an helpful tool also for land planning, especially in high seismic hazard areas.

Abstract

We captured post-seismic deformation close to the surface rupture of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake (M6.3, central Italy) using repeat terrestrial laser scan (TLS) methods. From 8 to 126 d after the earthquake, we repeatedly laser scanned four road surfaces that intersected the earthquake surface rupture. We modelled vertical near-field deformation, at millimetre-level precision, by comparing subsequent laser scan data sets to the first acquired at each site. The horizontal post-seismic deformation at each site was measured between reflectors paired across the rupture. The TLS data were supplemented by total station data from a fifth site which measured the vertical and horizontal components of post-seismic deformation between two points spanning the rupture. We find post-seismic deformation increased between 44 and 126 d at the southeastern end of the rupture, beneath which a significant gradient in coseismic slip exists within the fault zone. The location, rate of decay and spatially-localized nature of the post-seismic deformation, within tens of metres of the surface rupture suggests it is due to afterslip in the fault zone, driven by increased shear stresses at the edges of regions which slipped coseismically. We note that the magnitude of post-seismic deformation in the far field obtained from InSAR and GPS is not significantly greater than the deformations we have measured close to the rupture. We suggest that shallow, localized afterslip within the fault zone is responsible for the majority of the regional post-seismic deformation field.

Abstract

It is commonly believed that the Po Plain is an area of low seismic hazard. This conclusion is essentially a combination of two factors: (1) the historical record of earthquakes, which shows a relatively small number of events of moderate magnitude, and only two significant earthquakes, which occurred in the Middle Ages; and (2) the lack of ad-hoc research on the geology of earthquakes in this area, as although many studies have highlighted the local Quaternary tectonics, only a very few of them have discussed the observed evidence in terms of seismic hazard. In contrast, the data presented in the present study strongly suggest that the level of earthquake hazard in the Po Plain is comparable to that of the well-known seismic areas of the Apennine range, at least in terms of maximum magnitudes. Indeed, the high population density and the concentration of industrial facilities make the Po Plain today one of the more high-risk areas of the Italian territory. The Po Plain represents the foredeep of two growing mountain belts, the southern Alps and the northern Apennines. Recently, modern active tectonics studies have been conducted along its margins to the south, along the northern Apennine Piedmont belt, and to the northeast, along the eastern southern Alpine Piedmont belt. However, in the central and western sectors of the Po Plain, where the south-verging western southern Alpine front links up with the north-verging Monferrato, Emilia and Ferrara arcs, the Quaternary history of tectonic deformation and faulting are still relatively poorly understood. These lie beneath the relatively flat alluvial surface of the Po River, and provide the evidence for paleoseismicity and the resulting seismic hazard. In this review, we compile the data from the literature to reassess the style and magnitude of the ongoing crustal deformation and the associated earthquake faulting. This includes detailed information on historical and instrumental seismicity, extensive subsurface information from the ENI industrial exploration, structural interpretation of three regional seismic reflection profiles, analysis of novel global positioning system data, field mapping at selected key areas, and new paleoseismological investigations. We show that along the western southern Alpine belt between Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, the active tectonic setting is characterized by a segmented belt of fault-propagation folds. These are 50 km wide, and are controlled by the growth of out-of-sequence, 10-to-20-km-long, north and south verging thrusts. Regional global positioning system data show ongoing shortening rates of the order of 1 mm/yr. Quaternary fault slip rates typically range between 0.2 mm/yr and 0.4 mm/yr. Pleistocene shortening is obvious not only along the western southern Alpine outer fronts that are buried beneath the Po Plain, but also along the south Alpine foothills between Brescia and Varese. Similar styles and rates of active folding and thrusting have also been documented along the frontal sector of the northern Apennine arcs, from Torino to Ferrara, and along the base of the Apennine mountain front between Piacenza and Bologna. We selected the Brescia and Como sectors in the western southern Alps and the Monferrato and Mirandola structures in the northern Apennines as examples to illustrate the seismic landscape of the study area, in terms of typical active structural, geomorphic and paleoseismic features. We argue that the level of earthquake hazard in the Po Plain is comparable to that of the Apennine range.

Abstract

The Environmental Seismic Intensity scale (ESI2007) is a new earthquake intensity scale only based on the effects triggered by the earthquake in the natural environment. The coseismic effects considered more diagnostic for intensity evaluation are surface faulting and tectonic uplift/subsidence (primary effects), landslides, ground cracks, liquefactions, displaced boulders, tsunamis and hydrological anomalies (secondary effects). The ESI 2007 scale follows the same basic structure as any other XII degree scale, such as the MCS, MM, MSK and EMS scales.

Abstract

The 28th December 1908 Messina earthquake (Mw 7.1), Italy, caused >80,000 deaths and transformed earthquake science by triggering the study of earthquake environmental effects worldwide, yet its source is still a matter of debate. To constrain the geometry and kinematics of the earthquake we use elastic half-space modelling on non-planar faults, constrained by the geology and geomorphology of the Messina Strait, to replicate levelling data from 1907–1909. The novelty of our approach is that we (a) recognise the similarity between the pattern of vertical motions and that of other normal faulting earthquakes, and (b) for the first time model the levelling data using the location and geometry of a well-known offshore capable fault. Our results indicate slip on the capable fault with a dip to the east of 70° and 5 m dip-slip at depth, with slip propagating to the surface on the sea bed. Our work emphasises that geological and geomorphological observations supporting maps of capable non-planar faults should not be ignored when attempting to identify the sources of major earthquakes.
