The sensitivity and response time of glutamate sensors based on glutamate oxidase immobilized on planar platinum microelectrodes have been improved to near the theoretical performance limits predicted by a detailed mathematical model. Microprobes with an array of electroenzymatic sensing sites have emerged as useful tools for the monitoring of glutamate and other neurotransmitters in vivo; and implemented as such, they can be used to study many complex neurological diseases and disorders including Parkinson's disease and drug addiction. However, less than optimal sensitivity and response time has limited the spatiotemporal resolution of these promising research tools. A mathematical model has guided systematic improvement of an electroenzymatic glutamate microsensor constructed with a 1-2 μm-thick crosslinked glutamate oxidase layer and underlying permselective coating of polyphenylenediamine and Nafion reduced to less than 200 nm thick. These design modifications led to a nearly 6-fold improvement in sensitivity to 320 ± 20 nA μM-1 cm-2 at 37 °C and a ∼10-fold reduction in response time to 80 ± 10 ms. Importantly, the sensitivity and response times were attained while maintaining a low detection limit and excellent selectivity. Direct measurement of the transport properties of the enzyme and polymer layers used to create the biosensors enabled improvement of the mathematical model as well. Subsequent model simulations indicated that the performance characteristics achieved with the optimized biosensors approach the theoretical limits predicted for devices of this construction. Such high-performance glutamate biosensors will be more effective in vivo at a size closer to cellular dimension and will enable better correlation of glutamate signaling events with electrical recordings.

In recent years, civil engineering has increasingly embraced communication tools for automation, with sensors playing a pivotal role, especially in structural health monitoring (SHM). These sensors enable precise data acquisition, measuring parameters like force, displacement, and temperature and transmit data for timely interventions to prevent failures. This approach reduces reliance on manual inspections, offering more accurate outcomes. This review explores various sensor technologies in SHM, such as piezoelectric, fibre optic, force, MEMS devices, GPS, LVDT, electromechanical impedance techniques, Doppler effect, and piezoceramic sensors, focusing on advancements from 2019 to 2024. A bibliometric analysis of 1468 research articles from WOS and Scopus databases shows a significant increase in publications, from 15 in 2019 to 359 in 2023 and 52 in 2024 (and still counting). This analysis identifies emerging trends and applications in smart sensor integration in civil and structural health monitoring, enhancing safety and efficiency in infrastructure management.

Sex hormones and white (and grey) matter in the limbic system, cortex and other brain regions undergo changes during adolescence. Some of these changes include ongoing white matter myelination and sexually dimorphic features in grey and white matter. Adolescence is also a period of vulnerability when many are first exposed to alcohol and cannabis, which appear to influence the developing brain. Neuropsychological studies have provided considerable understanding of the effects of alcohol and cannabis on the brain. Advances in neuroimaging have allowed examination of neuroanatomic changes, metabolic and neurotransmitter activity, and neuronal activation during adolescent brain development and substance use. In this review, we examine major differences in brain development between users and non-users, and recent findings on the influence of cannabis and alcohol on the adolescent brain. We also discuss associations that appear to resolve following short-term abstinence, and attentional deficits that appear to persist. These findings can be useful in guiding earlier educational interventions for adolescents, and clarifying the neural sequelae of early alcohol and cannabis use to the general public.

A wide range of carbon sources are available in nature, with a variety of micro-/nanostructure configurations. Here, a novel technique to fabricate long and hollow glassy carbon microfibers derived from human hairs is introduced. The long and hollow carbon structures were made by the pyrolysis of human hair at 900 °C in a N2 atmosphere. The morphology and chemical composition of natural and pyrolyzed human hairs were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), respectively, to estimate the physical and chemical changes due to pyrolysis. Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm the glassy nature of the carbon microstructures. Pyrolyzed hair carbon was introduced to modify screen-printed carbon electrodes ; the modified electrodes were then applied to the electrochemical sensing of dopamine and ascorbic acid. Sensing performance of the modified sensors was improved as compared to the unmodified sensors. To obtain the desired carbon structure design, carbon micro-/nanoelectromechanical system (C-MEMS/C-NEMS) technology was developed. The most common C-MEMS/C-NEMS fabrication process consists of two steps: (i) the patterning of a carbon-rich base material, such as a photosensitive polymer, using photolithography; and (ii) carbonization through the pyrolysis of the patterned polymer in an oxygen-free environment. The C-MEMS/NEMS process has been widely used to develop microelectronic devices for various applications, including in micro-batteries, supercapacitors, glucose sensors, gas sensors, fuel cells, and triboelectric nanogenerators. Here, recent developments of a high-aspect ratio solid and hollow carbon microstructures with SU8 photoresists are discussed. The structural shrinkage during pyrolysis was investigated using confocal microscopy and SEM. Raman spectroscopy was used to confirm the crystallinity of the structure, and the atomic percentage of the elements present in the material before and after pyrolysis was measured using EDX.

Communication between different sub regions of the hippocampus is fundamental to learning and memory. However accurate knowledge about information transfer between sub regions from access to the activity in individual axons is lacking. MEMS devices with microtunnels connecting two sub networks have begun to approach this problem but the commonly used 10 μm wide tunnels frequently measure signals from multiple axons. To reduce this complexity, we compared polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microtunnel devices each with a separate tunnel width of 2.5, 5 or 10 μm bridging two wells aligned over a multi electrode array (MEA). Primary rat neurons were grown in the chambers with neurons from the dentate gyrus on one side and hippocampal CA3 on the other. After 2-3 weeks of culture, spontaneous activity in the axons inside the tunnels was recorded. We report electrophysiological, exploratory data analysis for feature clustering and visual evidence to support the expectation that 2.5 μm wide tunnels have fewer axons per tunnel and therefore more clearly delineated signals than 10 or 5 μm wide tunnels. Several measures indicated that fewer axons per electrode enabled more accurate detection of spikes. A clustering analysis comparing the variations of spike height and width for different tunnel widths revealed tighter clusters representing unique spikes with less height and width variation when measured in narrow tunnels. Wider tunnels tended toward more diffuse clusters from a continuum of spike heights and widths. Standard deviations for multiple cluster measures, such as Average Dissimilarity, Silhouette Value (S) and Separation Factor (average dissimilarity/S value), support a conclusion that 2.5 μm wide tunnels containing fewer axons enable more precise determination of individual action potential peaks, their propagation direction, timing, and information transfer between sub networks.

The article presents accelerations occurring in the human body when falling onto a safety net. An attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) consists of sensors on three axes that provide attitude information for objects, including pitch, roll, and yaw. These sensors are made of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gyroscopes, accelerometers, and magnetometers. Usually, they are used in aircraft flight instruments due to their high precision. In the present article, these sensors were used to test safety nets, protecting people or objects falling from heights. The measurement was made for two heights: 6 m and 3.5 m. During the research, a type of mannequin that is a representative model of the human body for the largest segment of the adult population was used. The measurement was carried out using two independent measurement systems. One recorded the accelerations at the chest of the tested object, while the sensors of the second system were placed at the head, arms, and legs. The compiled measurement results were related to the permissible acceleration values that do not threaten human health and life.

Micro-opto-electro-mechanical systems (MOEMS) biosensors are employed in various applications such as disease monitoring, drug investigation, detection of pollutants, and biological fluid studies. In this paper, a novel MOEMS biosensor based on a differential folded-flexure structure is introduced. The designed device is employed to detect prostate-specific antigen (PSA) protein and Hepatitis DNA. The target molecules cause a mechanical deflection in the folded-flexure; subsequently, the transmitted optical power across the finger, attached to the flexure, is modulated in proportion to the input concentration. Then, a photodiode power sensor measures the modulated optical power, where the output of the sensor is simply a current related to the target molecules' concentrations. The employed readout circuit operates at a wavelength of λ = 1550 nm with a laser power of 1 µW. The dimensions of the proposed biosensor are considered to be 365 × 340 × 2 μm³, making this sensor small enough and suitable for integration. The designed biosensor provides notable features of mechanical deflection sensitivities of 0.2053 nm/(ng/ml) and 7.2486 nm/nM, optical transmittance sensitivities of 0.535504 × 10 -3 1/(ng/ml) and 18.91 × 10 -3 1/nM, total output sensitivities of 0.5398 (mA/W)/(ng/ml) and 19.059 (mA/W)/nM, and measurement ranges of 0-1000 ng/ml and 0-28.33 nM for PSA and Hepatitis DNA, respectively. Intraoperative surgical video enables better surgical training, continued performance enhancement for surgeons and system-level quality improvement initiatives, however the capture of high-quality intraoperative video of open surgical procedures is difficult. Wearable cameras, typically in the form of a head-mounted action camera are frequently used for this purpose, although the video from these devices often contains significant motion artifact due to movement of the surgeon’s head. When trying to compare the performance of various wearable cameras in the surgical setting, we could not find a motion sensor appropriate for this purpose. We therefore describe in this article the design, assembly and validation of a small sensor that can be attached to wearable cameras in the operating room to objectively quantify camera motion. The sensor incorporates an inertial measurement unit coupled to a microcontroller. Concurrent validity is established by comparing the positional sensing of the device to a geared tripod head that allows for fine, measured manipulations of the sensor in three orthogonal axes. The methodology of capturing, processing and reporting camera movement for a surgical procedure is also detailed.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are playing a prominent role in the development of many new and innovative biomedical devices, but they remain a relatively underused technology in nephrology. The future landscape of clinical medicine and research will only see further expansion of MEMS-based technologies in device designs and applications. This enthusiasm stems from the ability to create small-scale device features with high precision in a cost-effective manner. MEMS also offers the possibility to integrate multiple components into a single device. The adoption of MEMS has the potential to revolutionize how nephrologists manage kidney disease by improving the delivery of renal replacement therapies and enhancing the monitoring of physiologic parameters. To introduce nephrologists to MEMS, this review will first define relevant terms and describe the basic processes used to fabricate devices. Next, a survey of MEMS devices being developed for various biomedical applications will be illustrated with current examples. Finally, MEMS technology specific to nephrology will be highlighted and future applications will be examined. The adoption of MEMS offers novel avenues to improve the care of kidney disease patients and assist nephrologists in clinical practice. This review will serve as an introduction for nephrologists to the exciting world of MEMS.

Vascular structures in natural systems are able to provide high mass transport through high surface areas and optimized structure. Few synthetic material fabrication techniques are able to mimic the complexity of these structures while maintaining scalability. The Vaporization of a Sacrificial Component (VaSC) process is able to do so. This process uses sacrificial fibers as a template to form hollow, cylindrical microchannels embedded within a matrix. Tin (II) oxalate (SnOx) is embedded within poly(lactic) acid (PLA) fibers which facilitates the use of this process. The SnOx catalyzes the depolymerization of the PLA fibers at lower temperatures. The lactic acid monomers are gaseous at these temperatures and can be removed from the embedded matrix at temperatures that do not damage the matrix. Here we show a method for aligning these fibers using micromachined plates and a tensioning device to create complex patterns of three-dimensionally arrayed microchannels. The process allows the exploration of virtually any arrangement of fiber topologies and structures.

Electromechanical reshaping (EMR) provides a means of producing shape change in cartilage by initiating oxidation-reduction reactions in mechanically deformed specimens. This study evaluates the effect of voltage and application time on specimen shape change using needle electrodes. Rabbit septal cartilage specimens (20 x 8 x 1 mm, n = 200) were bent 90 degrees in a precision-machined plastic jig. Optimal electrode placement and the range of applied voltages were estimated using numerical modeling of the initial electric field within the cartilage sample. A geometric configuration of three platinum needle electrodes 2 mm apart from each other and inserted 6 mm from the bend axis on opposite ends was selected. One row of electrodes served as the anode and the other as the cathode. Constant voltage was applied at 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 V for 1, 2, and 4 minutes, followed by rehydration in phosphate buffered saline. Samples were then removed from the jig and bend angle was measured. In accordance with previous studies, bend angle increased with increasing voltage and application time. Below a voltage threshold of 4 V, 4 minutes, no clinically significant reshaping was observed. The maximum bend angle obtained was 35.7 ± 1.7 º at 8 V, 4 minutes.

The proper execution of the sprint start is crucial in determining the performance during a sprint race. In this respect, when moving from the crouch to the upright position, trunk kinematics is a key element. The purpose of this study was to validate the use of a trunk-mounted inertial measurement unit (IMU) in estimating the trunk inclination and angular velocity in the sagittal plane during the sprint start. In-laboratory sprint starts were performed by five sprinters. The local acceleration and angular velocity components provided by the IMU were processed using an adaptive Kalman filter. The accuracy of the IMU inclination estimate and its consistency with trunk inclination were assessed using reference stereophotogrammetric measurements. A Bland-Altman analysis, carried out using parameters (minimum, maximum, and mean values) extracted from the time histories of the estimated variables, and curve similarity analysis (correlation coefficient > 0.99, root mean square difference < 7 deg) indicated the agreement between reference and IMU estimates, opening a promising scenario for an accurate in-field use of IMUs for sprint start performance assessment. We present in-vivo 3D human vocal fold images with polarization sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT). Characterizing the extent and location of vocal fold lesions provides useful information in guiding surgeons during phonomicrosurgery. Previous studies showed that PS-OCT imaging can distinguish vocal fold lesions from normal tissue, but these studies were limited to 2D cross-sectional imaging and were susceptible to sampling error. In-vivo 3D endoscopic imaging was performed by using a recently developed 2-axis MEMS scanning catheter and a spectral domain OCT (SD-OCT), running at 18.5 frames/s. Imaging was performed in the operating room with patients under general anesthesia and 3D images were acquired either by 2D scanning of the scanner on the sites of interest or by combining 1D scanning and manual sliding to capture whole length of the vocal fold. Vocal fold scar, polyps, nodules, papilloma and malignant lesions were imaged and characteristics of individual lesions were analyzed in terms of spatial distribution and variation of tissue structure and birefringence. The 3D large sectional PS-OCT imaging showed that the spatial extent of vocal fold lesions can be found non-invasively with good contrast from normal tissue.

Polyvinilidene fluoride (PVDF) single-element transducers for high-frequency (>30 MHz) ultrasound imaging applications have been developed using MEMS (Micro-electro-Mechanical Systems) compatible techniques. Performance of these transducers has been investigated by analyzing the sources and effects of on-chip parasitic capacitances on the insertion-loss of the transducers. Modeling and experimental studies showed that on-chip parasitic capacitances degraded the performance of the transducers and an improved method of fabrication was suggested and new devices were built. New devices developed with minimal parasitic effects were shown to improve the performance significantly. A 1-mm aperture PVDF device developed with minimal parasitic effects has resulted in a reduction of insertion loss of 21 dB compared with devices fabricated using a previous method.

We present multiphoton microendoscopy with a rotational probe and a 1 microm fiber-based femtosecond laser. The rotational probe is based on a double-clad photonic crystal fiber, a gradient index lens, a microprism, and a rotational microelectronicmechanical system (MEMS) motor. The MEMS motor has a diameter of 2.2 mm and can provide 360 degrees full-view rotation. The fiber laser provides ultrashort pulses with a central wavelength at 1.034 microm and a repetition rate of 50 MHz. Second-harmonic-generation images of rat-tail tendon and fish scale are demonstrated with the rotational probe-based multiphoton system.

A multiphoton endoscopy system has been developed using a two-axis microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) mirror and double-cladding photonic crystal fiber (DCPCF). The MEMS mirror has a 2-mm-diam, 20-deg optical scanning angle, and 1.26-kHz and 780-Hz resonance frequencies on the x and y axes. The maximum number of resolvable focal spots of the MEMS scanner is 720 x 720 on the x and y axes, which indicates that the MEMS scanner can potentially support high-resolution multiphoton imaging. The DCPCF is compared with standard single-mode fiber and hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber on the basis of dispersion, attenuation, and coupling efficiency properties. The DCPCF has high collection efficiency, and its dispersion can be compensated by grating pairs. Three configurations of probe design are investigated, and their imaging quality and field of view are compared. A two-lens configuration with a collimation and a focusing lens provides the optimum imaging performance and packaging flexibility. The endoscope is applied to image fluorescent microspheres and bovine knee joint cartilage.

Objective: To develop a cuffless method for estimating blood pressure (BP) from fingertip strain plethysmography (SPG) recordings., Methods: A custom-built micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) strain sensor is employed to record heartbeat-induced vibrations at the fingertip. An XGboost regressor is then trained to relate SPG recordings to beat-to-beat systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP) values. For this purpose, each SPG segment in this setup is represented by a feature vector consisting of cardiac time interval, amplitude features, statistical properties, and demographic information of the subjects. In addition, a novel concept, coined geometric features, are introduced and incorporated into the feature space to further encode the dynamics in SPG recordings. The performance of the regressor is assessed on 32 healthy subjects through 5-fold cross-validation (5-CV) and leave-subject-out cross validation (LSOCV)., Results: Mean absolute errors (MAEs) of 3.88 mmHg and 5.45 mmHg were achieved for DBP and SBP estimations, respectively, in the 5-CV setting. LSOCV yielded MAEs of 8.16 mmHg for DBP and 16.81 mmHg for SBP. Through feature importance analysis, 3 geometric and 26 integral-related features introduced in this work were identified as primary contributors to BP estimation. The method exhibited robustness against variations in blood pressure level (normal to critical) and body mass index (underweight to obese), with MAE ranges of [1.28, 4.28] mmHg and [2.64, 7.52] mmHg, respectively., Conclusion: The findings suggest high potential for SPG-based BP estimation at the fingertip., Significance: This study presents a fundamental step towards the augmentation of optical sensors that are susceptible to dark skin tones.

The growing interest in microfluidic biosensors has led to improvements in the analytical performance of various sensing mechanisms. Although various sensors can be integrated with microfluidics, electrochemical ones have been most commonly employed due to their ease of miniaturization, integration ability, and low cost, making them an established point-of-care diagnostic method. This concept can be easily adapted to the detection of biomarkers specific to certain cancer types. Pathological profiling of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is heterogeneous and rather complex, and biopsy samples contain limited information regarding the tumor and do not reflect its heterogeneity. Circulating tumor DNAs (ctDNAs), which can contain information regarding cancer characteristics, have been studied tremendously since liquid biopsy emerged as a new diagnostic method. Recent improvements in the accuracy and sensitivity of ctDNA determination also paved the way for genotyping of somatic genomic alterations. In this study, three-electrode (Au-Pt-Ag) glass chips were fabricated and combined with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchannels to establish an electrochemical microfluidic sensor for detecting c.747G > T hotspot mutations in the TP53 gene of ctDNAs from HCC. The preparation and analysis times of the constructed sensor were as short as 2 h in total, and a relatively high flow rate of 30 µl/min was used during immobilization and hybridization steps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a PDMS-based microfluidic electrochemical sensor has been developed to target HCC ctDNAs. The system exhibited a limit of detection (LOD) of 24.1 fM within the tested range of 2-200 fM. The sensor demonstrated high specificity in tests conducted with fully noncomplementary and one-base mismatched target sequences. The leadless pacemaker is the most recent pacemaker concept, developed to overcome conventional pacemakers' limitations. This technology offers better comfort to the patients, lower risk from implantation, and higher reliability. However, these devices suffer from limited battery lifetime due to the extreme miniaturization required for implantation inside the heart cavities. This work proposes extending the battery lifetime by converting biomechanical heartbeat energy into electricity using an innovative electrostatic MEMS energy harvesting device. Based on theoretical models and experiments, we propose a general approach to choosing the optimal interface circuit which considers the parasitic capacitance of the circuit, as it is an imperfection that significantly affects the power performance. According to the energy consumed by the last generation commercial leadless pacemakers, the proposed MEMS solution with optimal interface circuit experimentally showed the possibility of extending the pacemaker battery lifetime by up to 44%.

Cell bionic culture requires the construction of cell growth microenvironments. In this paper, mechanical force and electrical stimulations are applied to the cells cultured on the surface of the piezoelectric laminated micro-beam driven by an excitation voltage. Based on the extended dielectric theory, the electromechanical microenvironment regulating model of the current piezoelectric laminated micro-beam is established. The variational principle is used to obtain the governing equations and boundary conditions. The differential quadrature method and the iterative method are used to solve two boundary value problems for cantilever beams and simply supported beams. In two cases, the mechanical force and electrical stimulations applied to the cells are analyzed in detail and the microscale effect is investigated. Introduction: Electrophysiological differences between typical and dense (beach ball) benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) tissues were investigated using a needle device with a micro-electrical impedance spectroscopy (µEIS) sensor. Materials and methods: Ten pieces of typical BPH tissues and beach balls were collected from ten patients during the morcellation procedure of Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate. Their impedance was measured at a frequency range from 100 to 1 MHz using the µEIS-on-a-needle (µEoN). The impedance data (magnitude) were compared between the two tissue types and their correlation with the pathologic features was investigated. Results: The mean magnitude of the beach balls tended to be larger than that of the typical BPH tissues at all investigated frequencies. Notably, significantly larger magnitudes were observed in the beach balls at the frequencies higher than 15.9 kHz (p ≤ 0.02). The variation of mean log-transformed magnitudes by frequency was significantly different between both tissue types (p < 0.001). The pathologic features of the beach balls presented pure stromal nodules of nodular hyperplasia, while the typical BPH tissues presented mixed epithelial-stromal nodules. Conclusions: The impedance difference between typical BPH tissues and beach balls is assumed to be attributed to the amount of their stromal content. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We propose a new methodology for long-term biopotential recording based on an MEMS multisensor integrated platform featuring a commercial electrostatic charge-transfer sensor. This family of sensors was originally intended for presence tracking in the automotive industry, so the existing setup was engineered for the acquisition of electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, electrooculograms, and electromyography, designing a dedicated front-end and writing proper firmware for the specific application. Systematic tests on controls and nocturnal acquisitions from patients in a domestic environment will be discussed in detail. The excellent results indicate that this technology can provide a low-power, unexplored solution to biopotential acquisition. The technological breakthrough is in that it enables adding this type of functionality to existing MEMS boards at near-zero additional power consumption. For these reasons, it opens up additional possibilities for wearable sensors and strengthens the role of MEMS technology in medical wearables for the long-term synchronous acquisition of a wide range of signals.

Attitude determination involves the integration of methodologies and systems for estimating the time varying attitude of moving objects. Strapdown Inertial Attitude Measurement System (SIAMS) is among the most widely used navigation systems. The development of cost effective Micro Electro Mechanic System (MEMS) based inertial sensors has made attitude measurement system more affordable. However, MEMS sensors suffer from various errors that have to be calibrated and compensated to get acceptable attitude results. Given the auto-compensation of inertial sensor bias in rotation error modulation, the objective of this paper is to develop a MEMS-based rotary SIAMS, in which the significant sensor bias is automatically compensated by rotating the IMU, to offer comparable performance with respect to a tactical-grade Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). With the analysis of the relationship between the MEMS error and misalignment, a MEMS calibration model is derived, and a combined calibration method of multi position rotation is applied to estimate the deterministic sensor errors such as bias, scale factor, and misalignment. Rapid and label-free detection of very low concentrations of biomarkers in disease diagnosis or therapeutic drug monitoring is essential to prevent disease progression in Point of Care Testing. For this purpose, we propose a multi-purpose optical Bio-Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System (BioMEMS) sensing platform which can precisely measure very small changes of biomolecules concentrations in plasma-like buffer samples. This is realized by the development of an interferometric detection method on highly sensitive MEMS transducers (cantilevers). This approach facilitates the precise analysis of the obtained results to determine the analyte type and its concentrations. Furthermore, the proposed multi-purpose platform can be used for a wide range of biological assessments in various concentration levels by the use of an appropriate bioreceptor and the control of its coating density on the cantilever surface. In this study, the present system is prepared for the identification of digoxin medication in its therapeutic window for therapeutic drug monitoring as a case study. The experimental results represent the repeatability and stability of the proposed device as well as its capability to detect the analytes in less than eight minutes for all samples. In addition, according to the experiments carried out for very low concentrations of digoxin in plasma-like buffer, the detection limit of LOD = 300 fM and the maximum sensitivity of S = 5.5 × 10 12  AU/M are achieved for the implemented biosensor. The present ultrasensitive multi-purpose BioMEMS sensor can be a fully-integrated, cost-effective device to precisely analyze various biomarker concentrations for various biomedical applications., (© 2024. This study aims to represent fine texture differences in pencil hardness using intensity segment modulation (ISM), a sensory equivalent conversion method of vibration from high to low frequencies. This method enables the presentation of delicate tactile sensations even with small transducers. We integrated this approach in the world's thinnest ultra-thin PZT-MEMS vibrator with a stylus-type device. The vibration waveforms of four types of pencil hardness were captured under the same conditions, and the differences in the frequency components were confirmed. We compared the fine texture feelings under raw signal, ISM, and ISM below 1 kHz conditions by conducting discrimination tests and subjective similarity evaluations. The results showed that ISM could reproduce similar feelings of the pencil hardness.

Natural-orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) using flexible endoscopy has attracted attention as a minimally invasive surgical method that does not cause an operative wound on the body surface. However, minimizing the number of devices involved in endoscopic, compared to laparoscopic, surgeries has remained a challenge, causing endoscopic surgeries to gradually be phased out of use. If a flexible endoscopic full-thickness suturing device and a counter-traction device were developed to expand the surgical field for gastrointestinal-tract collapse, then endoscopic full-thickness resection using NOTES, which is seen as an extension of endoscopic submucosal dissection for full-thickness excision of tumors involving the gastrointestinal-tract wall, might become an extremely minimally invasive surgical method that could be used to resect only full-thickness lesions approached by the shortest distance via the mouth. It is expected that gastroenterological endoscopists will use this surgery if device development is advanced. This extremely minimally invasive surgery would have an immeasurable impact with regard to mitigating the burden on patients and reducing healthcare costs. Development of a new surgical method using a multipurpose flexible endoscope is therefore considered a socially urgent issue.
