Optical interconnection technology is the most promising solution for on-chip multi-core interconnection because of its advantages over electrical interconnection. To improve the performance of on-chip optical interconnection network architecture, a novel 5 × 5 full-duplex communication optical routing switch based on microring is proposed. A novel microring resonator switch formed by covering a layer of insulating layer HfO2 and a layer of activating material indium-tin oxide on the traditional microring resonator is used as the switch unit. The 15-microring topology enables non-blocking switching of 5 bidirectional ports, reducing power consumption and area. The results show that the maximum insertion loss of the optical router is 1.485 dB, the average insertion loss is 0.904 dB, and the average energy consumption is only 5.7211fJ, and the response time is less than 12 ns. The optical router has the advantages of simple structure, small size, and low-energy consumption, and can be widely used in signal processing systems, communication systems, and interconnection systems. Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) is a promising material platform for applications in integrated quantum photonics. A low optical loss is crucial for preserving fragile quantum states. Therefore, in this study, we have fabri-cated LNOI rib waveguides with a low optical propagation loss of 0.16 dB/cm by optimizing the etching conditions for various parameters. The symmetry and smoothness of the waveguides on x-cut LNOI are improved by employing a shallow etching process. The proposed method is expected to facilitate the development of on-chip quantum photonic devices based on LNOI.

The reliable generation of dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) enables applications in communications, metrology, optical clocks, and, more recently, artificial intelligence. We show how single DKS can be generated by Si3N4 dual-coupled microring resonators (DCMs). We modeled this coupled structure using the Lugiato–Lefever equation (LLE), including mode interactions in the dispersion profile. We also characterized the pump power and detuning parameter space for several mode interaction strengths and frequencies, and we found parameters for which a DKS could be deterministically obtained using a single, adiabatic frequency sweep with a constant pump power. We demonstrated deterministic single DKS generation for this path by simulating 200 times with different random noise inputs. This result paves the way for reliable, inexpensive, and deterministic single DKS generation in a simple setup. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Optical phase change materials (OPCMs) hold significant promise in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) due to their non‐volatile modulation capabilities through phase transition. Recently, integrating OPCMs with silicon devices has been leveraged to achieve multi‐level modulation in neural network computing. However, the conventional OPCM Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST), faces challenges in large‐scale PICs due to its large absorption. In this work, an optimized low‐loss GST superlattice is demonstrated, which significantly lowers crystalline attenuation coefficients from 2.69 to 0.539 dB µm−1, with negligible loss in amorphous state, while retaining excellent phase modulation capability. Additionally, 15 distinguishable extinction ratio states are achieved by manipulating irradiation energy for a hybrid Si microring resonator (MRR) embedded with GST superlattice. To further explore the potential application of GST superlattice in optical computing, an all‐optical tunable temporal differentiator is empirically demonstrated with a single hybrid MRR, achieving a broad dynamic differentiation order ranging from 0.7 to 1.3. The non‐volatile nature of OPCM facilitates low energy consumption and effectively optimizes chip density. The proposed structural design strategy to reduce the absorption loss is universal for any promising OPCMs feasible for large‐scale artificial intelligence‐driven PICs, including optical analog computing, optical switching and optical neural networks. In-memory computing has emerged in the field of electronics as a possible solution to the infamous bottleneck between memory and computing processors, which reduces the effective throughput of data. In photonics, novel schemes attempt to collocate the computing processor and memory in a single device. Photonics offers the flexibility of multiplexing streams of data not only spatially and in time, but also in frequency or, equivalently, in wavelength, which makes it highly suitable for parallel computing. Here, we numerically show the use of time and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) to solve four independent tasks at the same time in a single photonic chip, serving as a proof of concept for our proposal. The system is a time-delay reservoir computing (TDRC) based on a microring resonator (MRR). The addressed tasks cover different applications: Time-series prediction, waveform signal classification, wireless channel equalization, and radar signal prediction. The system is also tested for simultaneous computing of up to 10 instances of the same task, exhibiting excellent performance. The footprint of the system is reduced by using time-division multiplexing of the nodes that act as the neurons of the studied neural network scheme. WDM is used for the parallelization of wavelength channels, each addressing a single task. By adjusting the input power and frequency of each optical channel, we can achieve levels of performance for each of the tasks that are comparable to those quoted in state-of-the-art reports focusing on single-task operation. We also quantify the memory capacity and nonlinearity of each parallelized RC and relate these properties to the performance of each task. We demonstrate high-extraction-rate Ta2O5-core/SiO2-clad photonic waveguides on silicon fabricated by the photolithography-assisted chemo-mechanical etching technique. Low-confinement waveguides of larger than 70% coupling efficiency with optical fibers and medium propagation loss around 1 dB/cm are investigated in the experiment. Monolithic microring resonators based on Ta2O5 waveguides have shown the quality factors to be above 105 near 1550 nm. Silicon‐on‐insulator (SOI) based photonic sensors, particularly those utilizing Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) technology, have emerged as promising candidates for miniaturized bioanalytical devices. These sensors offer real‐time responses, occupy minimal space, possess high sensitivity, and facilitate label‐free detection. However, like many biosensors, they face challenges when detecting analytes at exceedingly low concentrations due to limitations in mass transport. An intriguing method to enhance mass transfer in microfluidic biosensors is AC electrokinetics. Proof‐of‐concept experiments have demonstrated significant enhancements in limit of detection (LOD) and response times. AC electrokinetics, compatible with silicon photonic sensors, offers techniques such as electroosmosis, electrothermal effects, and dielectrophoresis to modify fluid flow and manipulate particle trajections. A U-shape cavity including the microring resonator with a radius of 3 µm has been modeled and studied for the throughput and drop output power enhancement of the microring resonator. We have obtained the maximum output power of the silicon microring resonator by varying the bandgap between the microring and the coupled bus waveguides. The outputs can be further affected by using the different semiconductor materials such as GaAs and InAs as core waveguides, which show significant power enhancement at the throughput and drop, respectively. High‐quality‐factor microring resonators are highly desirable in many applications. Fabricating a microring resonator typically requires delicate instruments to ensure a smooth side wall of waveguides and 100‐nm critical feature size in the coupling region. In this work, a new method "damascene soft nanoimprinting lithography" is demonstrated that can create high‐fidelity waveguide by simply backfilling an imprinted cladding template with a high refractive index polymer core. This method can easily realize high Q‐factor polymer microring resonators (e.g., ≈5 × 105 around 770 nm wavelength) without the use of any expensive instruments and can be conducted in a normal lab environment. The high Q‐factors can be attributed to the residual layer‐free feature and controllable meniscus cross‐section profile of the filled polymer core. Furthermore, the new method is compatible with different polymers, yields low fabrication defects, enables new functionalities, and allows flexible substrate. This study highlights the benefits of soliton microcombs (SMCs) in FSO communication systems. By employing a microring resonator coupled with an add/drop filter, we achieved soliton microcombs with a precise Free Spectral Range (FSR) of 1870 pm and a Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM) of 60 pm, tailored for Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) channels. The system utilized 100 lines for the WDM channel with an inter-channel spacing of 0.5 nm and PolSK modulation to encode the data. This combination achieved a bit error rate (BER) of $ 10^{-9} $ 10 − 9 , significantly lower than the $ 10^{-7} $ 10 − 7 observed with traditional systems. For performance simulation, the channel was characterized using the gamma-gamma model, which assessed the impact of atmospheric turbulence on data transmission. The results show a high channel capacity ( $ 10^3 $ 10 3 Gbit/s) and a low loss probability ( $ 10^{-8} $ 10 − 8 ), ensuring reliable data transmission even in the presence of atmospheric disturbances. This article proposes an on-chip optical temperature sensor based on a cascaded microring resonator, which is composed of a reference ring and a sensing ring cascaded with different temperature sensitivities and free spectral ranges. By changing the temperature of the sensing window environment, the thermal optical effect of the waveguide causes a change in the refractive index of the waveguide, which affects the temperature sensitivity and free spectrum changes of the sensor. The output spectral response of the sensor shifts, achieving temperature sensing detection. The experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of this microring cascaded temperature sensor is 303.6 pm/°C, which is 3.65 times the limit of a single microring temperature sensitivity of 83 pm/°C. The temperature-sensing range of the sensor is 100°C, which can well meet the temperature-monitoring requirements of ultra-large-scale integrated circuits.

In this study, a biosensor based on a central microring comprising miniature gold rings is reported for the detection of influenza avian viruses. The label-free microring resonator's design performance attributes as a function of the host analytes (viral samples) enable great sensitivity for detecting various viruses, such as H1N1 and H9N2. The microring resonator's optimised characteristics make the suggested biosensor sensitive to these viruses. The simulations show a sensitivity of 880 nm/RIU for H1N1 and around 2025 nm/RIU for H9N2. The use of two-dimensional black phosphorus materials with higher field enhancement, biocompatibility, and a greater surface-to-volume ratio resulted in a significant increase in sensitivity of 1425 nm/RIU for detecting H9N2. The sensor is proven to be more sensitive to H9N2 than H1N1. Furthermore, the biosensor based on 2D material has a compact footprint and a larger wavelength shift for H9N2, which can accelerate the development of nano optic biosensors for rapid, sensitive, and early detection of viruses.

The engineering of thermo-optic effects has found broad applications in integrated photonic devices, facilitating efficient light manipulation to achieve various functionalities. Here, we perform both an experimental characterization and a theoretical analysis of these effects in integrated microring resonators made from high-index doped silica, which have had many applications in integrated photonics and nonlinear optics. By fitting the experimental results with theory, we obtain fundamental parameters that characterize their thermo-optic performance, including the thermo-optic coefficient, the efficiency of the optically induced thermo-optic process, and the thermal conductivity. The characteristics of these parameters are compared to those of other materials commonly used for integrated photonic platforms, such as silicon, silicon nitride, and silica. These results offer a comprehensive insight into the thermo-optic properties of doped silica-based devices. The rising demand for bandwidth in optical communication networks has led to the need for more efficient solutions for spectrum allocation. This article presents a solution to enhance the capacity and efficiency of passive optical networks (PON) using optical microring resonators and dynamic spectrum allocation. The solution relies on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). It proposes using a support vector machine (SVM) and a Routing, Modulation Level, and Spectrum Assignment (RMLSA) method to manage spectrum allocation based on the bandwidth and distance of multiple requests. The network employs a pulse shaper to physically allocate the spectrum, allowing for the separation of the spectrum generated by the microring resonators into different wavelengths or wavelength ranges (super-channel). Additionally, the SVM and RMLSA algorithms regulate the pulse shaper to execute the allocation. This photonic network achieves improved spectrum utilization and reduces the network blocking probability. Our proposal shows that we successfully addressed 1090 requests with a zero blocking probability, accounting for 81% of the total requests. These request scenarios can simultaneously accommodate up to 200 requests, with a maximum bandwidth of 31 THz. We demonstrate a fourth-order Vernier serious-coupled microring resonator (MRR) filter based on the InGaAs/InAlAs five-layer asymmetric coupled quantum-well (FACQW) waveguide. As the tuning of the main resonance wavelength is driven by the electrorefractive index change in the FACQW layer caused by the quantum-confined Stark effect (QCSE), the MRR filter has lower tuning power consumption and high-speed operation. The free spectral range (FSR) of the MRR filter is extended to 9.4 nm. The main resonant peak is discretely tuned within one FSR, leading to an increase in the wavelength channel. All-optical processor capable of processing optical bits has been a long-standing goal of photonics. In this paper, we report the results obtained by numerical simulations regarding the designing of an all-optical combinational circuit of an adder and subtractor circuits based on Si3N4 microring resonators. The designs of combinational circuit like adders and subtractor based on the use of all-optical basic logic gates are discussed while presenting the numerically simulated results. Extinction ratios of 5.2 dB, 3.5 dB and 2.7 dB are obtained for the half adder, full adder and half subtractor, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As photonic linear computations are diverse and easy to realize while photonic nonlinear computations are relatively limited and difficult, we propose a novel way to perform photonic nonlinear computations by linear operations in a high-dimensional space, which can achieve many nonlinear functions different from existing optical methods. As a practical application, the arbitrary binary nonlinear computations between two Boolean signals are demonstrated to implement a programmable logic array. In the experiment, by programming the high-dimensional photonic matrix multiplier, we execute fourteen different logic operations with only one fixed nonlinear operation. Then the combined logic functions of half-adder and comparator are demonstrated at 10 Gbit/s. Compared with current methods, the proposed scheme simplifies the devices and the nonlinear operations for programmable logic computing. More importantly, nonlinear realization assisted by space transformation offers a new solution for optical digital computing and enriches the diversity of photonic nonlinear computing.

A bandwidth-tunable multiband microwave photonic filter (MPF) using a strongly coupled microring resonator (MRR) with optical phase modulation is demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. Two notches of the MRR adjacent to the optical carrier break the intrinsic balance of the phase-modulated signal and then two sub-MPFs are formed thanks to the conversion from phase modulation to intensity modulation (PM-IM). The frequency responses of the two sub-MPFs are superimposed to form a passband with a fixed center frequency. Due to the periodicity of the MRR transmission spectrum, multiple passbands separated by a certain spacing appear in the frequency domain and combine to form a multiband MPF, whose bandwidth can be adjusted by tuning the wavelength of the carrier. The tunable bandwidth and shape factors ranging from 0.73 GHz to 2.73 GHz and 5.06 to 1.38 are experimentally performed. The number of passbands can be reconfigured. The proposed multiband MPF has the potential to be employed in modern multi-standard wireless communication systems.

Non-Hermitian systems with their spectral degeneracies known as exceptional points (EPs) have been explored for lasing, controlling light transport, and enhancing a sensor's response. A ring resonator can be brought to an EP by controlling the coupling between its frequency degenerate clockwise and counterclockwise traveling modes. This has been typically achieved by introducing two or more nanotips into the resonator's mode volume. While this method provides a route to study EP physics, the basic understanding of how the nanotips' shape and size symmetry impact the system's non-Hermicity is missing, along with additional loss from both in-plane and out-of-plane scattering. The limited resonance stability poses a challenge for leveraging EP effects for switches or modulators, which requires stable cavity resonance and fixed laser-cavity detuning. Here we use lithographically defined asymmetric and symmetric Mie scatterers, which enable subwavelength control of wave transmission and reflections without deflecting to additional radiation channels. We show that those pre-defined Mie scatterers can bring the system to an EP without post tuning, as well as enable chiral light transport within the resonator. Counterintuitively, the Mie scatterer results in enhanced quality factor measured on the transmission port, through coherently suppressing the backscattering from the waveguide surface roughness. The proposed device platform enables pre-defined chiral light propagation and backscattering-free resonances, needed for various applications such as frequency combs, solitons, sensing, and other nonlinear optical processes such as photon blockade, and regenerative oscillators. Introduction. Optical backscatter reflectometry is one of the most promising methods used to examine characteristic parameters relevant to the design of microring resonators. This method paves the way for experimental determination of the coupling coefficient and propagation loss. However, experimental verification of this technique by comparing the transmission characteristics obtained by reflectometry and those directly measured by an optical vector analyzer has not been carried out.Aim. To determine the parameters of microring resonators by optical reflectometry and to calculate on their basis the transmission characteristics of microring resonators. To compare the calculated transmission characteristics with those obtained experimentally using a high-resolution vector analyzer.Materials and methods. The characteristic parameters of silicon-on-insulator microring resonators were investigated using an ultra-high resolution reflectometer. An original algorithm was employed to derive the characteristic parameters of microring resonators from reflectograms. An optical vector analyzer was used to study the transmission characteristics of microring resonators. Numerical modeling of transmission characteristics considering the obtained parameters was carried out according an analytical approach based on partial wave analysis.Results. The obtained values of the power coupling coefficient κ = 0.167 and propagation losses α = 3.25 dB/cm were used for numerical simulation of the transmission characteristics of a microring resonator. These characteristics were found to agree well with those obtained experimentally. The free spectral range of 88.8 GHz and Q-factor of 45 000 were determined.Conclusion. An experimental study of the characteristic parameters of silicon-on-insulator microring resonators was conducted using an optical backscatter reflectometer. The performed comparison of the experimental and theoretical transmission characteristics showed good agreement, which indicates the high accuracy of the determined resonator parameters and, as a result, the relevance of the described method.

Recently, polymer nanocomposites have attracted great interest due to their remarkable characteristics of high performance and enabling production of low-cost devices. This article explores the reflective index sensing application of the polymer nanocomposite IOC-133, which is a TiOx/polymer nanocomposite with a reflective index between 1.8 and 1.9. Considering the material properties of high reflective index, low absorption loss, and compatibility with nanoimprint lithography, a microring-based reflective index sensor with a suspended slot waveguide structure is proposed. We combined the sensing mechanism of slot waveguides with high reflective index polymer nanocomposites and designed the suspended structure to address the problem of decreasing sensitivity caused by residual layers. The sensing device was adopted as a microring resonator, which is conducive to large-scale integration. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was employed to analyze the effects of several key parameters. The results showed that the racetrack microring sensor we propose can achieve a high sensitivity of 436 nm/RIU (Refractive Index Units), about six times higher than the microring sensor with a ridge waveguide. The Q factor of the microring reaches 1.42 × 104, and the detection limit is 1.38 × 10−4 RIU. An embedded microring resonator model using PtS2 as the core layer was designed and optimized for sensing. The inner layer is made of PtS2, and SiO2 and Si3N4 are used as cladding. The overall structure is Si3N4-SiO2-PtS2-SiO2-Si3N4. Field strength distribution of longitudinal section of single straight waveguide and the longitudinal section of coupling part of straight and annular waveguides are simulated according to the coupled-mode theory. The transfer matrix method is used to analyze characteristics between the length of the U-shaped feedback waveguide and the circumference of microring and the change of attenuation factor and coupling coefficient on the output spectrum. The simulation results showed that the embedded microring resonator with PtS2 as the core presents excellent optical properties. The resonance depth is more than –50 dB, and the sensitivity can reach 1806.61 dB/RIU. When the resonance wavelength is 1550.86 nm and the self -coupling coefficient is 0.9849. The corresponding detection limit is about 1.66056×10–7 dB/RIU, and the quality factor is 2.8848×10–5 under the measurement system with a signal-to-noise ratio of 30 dB. Compared with the traditional single microring structure, the proposed microring presents a higher free spectral range and more suitable for the fabrication of high-sensitivity, low-detection limit, and large-measurement range sensors. In the present work, polarization conversion and rotation (PCR) based on a ternary logic for an optical switch has been proposed and described. The proposed design utilizes GaAs material-based racetrack microring resonator. The ternary states of logic are defined by specific polarization states of light. Proposed all-optical ternary circuit is numerically established and simulated using INTERCONNECT simulation software. The acquired results are confirmed by well-known Jones matrix and Stokes parameter methods. The high-speed optical communication exploits the advantages of such multi-valued ternary logic systems. With the advancement of modulation technology and the requirement for device miniaturization and integration, lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) can be a versatile platform for this pursuit, as it can confine the transmitted light at the nanoscale, leading to a strong light–matter interaction, which can sensitively capture external variations, such as electric fields and temperature. This paper presents a compact microring modulator with versatile tuning based on X-cut LNOI. The LNOI modulator equipped with electrodes with a coverage angle of 120 ∘ achieved a maximum electro-optic (EO) tuning efficiency of 13 pm/V and a maximum extinction ratio of 11 dB. The asymmetry in the static or quasi-static electro-optic tuning of the microring modulator was also analyzed. Furthermore, we measured the thermal-optic effect of the device with a sensitivity of 26.33 pm/ ∘ C, which can potentially monitor the environment temperature or compensate for devices' functional behavior. The demonstrated efficient and versatile compact microring modulator will be an important platform for on-chip active or passive photonic components, microring-based sensor arrays and integrated optics. An embedded microring resonator model using PtS2 as the core layer was designed and optimized for sensing. The inner layer is made of PtS2, and SiO2 and Si3N4 are used as cladding. The overall structure is Si3N4-SiO2-PtS2-SiO2-Si3N4. Field strength distribution of longitudinal section of single straight waveguide and the longitudinal section of coupling part of straight and annular waveguides are simulated according to the coupled-mode theory. The transfer matrix method is used to analyze characteristics between the length of the U-shaped feedback waveguide and the circumference of microring and the change of attenuation factor and coupling coefficient on the output spectrum. The simulation results showed that the embedded microring resonator with PtS2 as the core presents excellent optical properties. The resonance depth is more than –50 dB, and the sensitivity can reach 1806.61 dB/RIU. When the resonance wavelength is 1550.86 nm and the self -coupling coefficient is 0.9849. The corresponding detection limit is about 1.66056×10–7 dB/RIU, and the quality factor is 2.8848×10–5 under the measurement system with a signal-to-noise ratio of 30 dB. Compared with the traditional single microring structure, the proposed microring presents a higher free spectral range and more suitable for the fabrication of high-sensitivity, low-detection limit, and large-measurement range sensors. Spiking neurons and neural networks constitute a fundamental building block for brain-inspired computing, which is poised to benefit significantly from photonic hardware implementations. In this work, we experimentally investigate an interconnected optical neuromorphic system based on an ultrafast spiking vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) neuron and a silicon photonics (SiPh) integrated micro-ring resonator (MRR). We experimentally demonstrate two different functional arrangements of these devices: first, we show that MRR weight banks can be used in conjunction with the spiking VCSEL-neurons to perform amplitude weighting of sub-ns optical spiking signals. Second, we show that a continuously firing VCSEL-neuron can be directly modulated using a locking signal propagated through a single weighting MRR, and we utilise this functionality to perform optical spike firing rate-coding via thermal tuning of the MRR. Given the significant track record of both integrated weight banks and photonic VCSEL-neurons, we believe these results demonstrate the viability of combining these two classes of devices for use in functional neuromorphic photonic systems.

We present a new architecture for generation of multilevel pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signal generation based on cascaded 4x4 multimode interference (MMI) structure used for optical interconnects and data centre network. The proposed device can generate two ring resonator structures with capability of critical coupling control. The push-pull configuration then is used at two ring resonators for PAM-4 level generation, so a zero chirp can be achieved. In this structure an M-shape transmission can be created for the first time. We use this property for an extreme reduction of power consumption with a lower level than 4-28 times compared with the PAM-4 generation based on the Mach Zehnder Modulator (MZM), respectively. Based on this structure, an extreme high bandwidth and compact footprint are also achieved. The whole device is designed and analyzed using the existing VLSI silicon photonics.

This study describes the basic principles of optical waveguide refractive index sensing and the various design structures of refractive index sensors. These waveguides generate different optical resonances, which cause changes in the sensing refractive index and temperature and are subsequently used to detect the concentration in the analyses. First, the structural characteristics and performance indices of the microring sensor and interferometer are studied based on the refractive index of the optical waveguide. Second, the principle and sensing detection mechanism of the two types of refractive index sensing employed in these sensors are analyzed. Then, the two sensors are classified and discussed from the perspective of the waveguide materials and structures, as well as the substances to be measured. Simultaneously, performance indicators such as sensitivity and detection range are compared and summarized. The comparison results show that there is a compromise between the sensitivity and quality factor of the optical waveguide refractive index sensor. Finally, applications of refractive index sensing in the biochemical field for material detection are discussed, showing that the optical waveguide refractive index sensor has significant advantages over other types of biochemical optical sensors. We demonstrate a narrow linewidth 980 nm laser by self-injection locking of an electrically pumped distributed-feedback (DFB) laser diode to a high quality (Q) factor (>105) lithium niobate (LN) microring resonator. The lithium niobate microring resonator is fabricated by photolithography-assisted chemo-mechanical etching (PLACE) technique, and the Q factor of lithium niobate microring is measured as high as 6.91 × 105. The linewidth of the multimode 980 nm laser diode, which is ~2 nm measured from its output end, is narrowed down to 35 pm with a single-mode characteristic after coupling with the high-Q LN microring resonator. The output power of the narrow-linewidth microlaser is about 4.27 mW, and the wavelength tuning range reaches 2.57 nm. This work explores a hybrid integrated narrow linewidth 980 nm laser that has potential applications in high-efficient pump laser, optical tweezers, quantum information, as well as chip-based precision spectroscopy and metrology. Representation of triple unsymmetrical micro ring resonators (TUMRR) with single input and single output waveguide has been executed in this paper. Statistical demonstration of the presented arrangement is realized in the z-domain by a delay line signal processing method. The transfer function of the triple unsymmetrical micro ring resonator is calculated by Mason's Gain rule. The offered arrangement is performed on SOI (Silicon in Insulator) platform to achieve the filtering and biochemical sensing intentions. To acquire field response of the arrangement, Finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique is used. Characteristics of optical filters are studied from the frequency response plot and the achieved free spectral range is 243.5 GHz. The shift in wavelength for biosensing application is accomplished through the OptiFDTD software. The sensitivity of the proposed TUMRR based biosensor is around 200–280 nm/RIU for different blood cells where as the Q-factor attained is 1938. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

All-optical modulators play a key role in building all-optical networks for efficient optical signal processing and have attracted intensive attention. In this paper, all-optical modulators with in situ grown molybdenum telluride (MoTe2) nanosheets on silicon are proposed and demonstrated for the first time with a self-developed complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)-compatible fabrication processes. For the silicon-based all-optical modulators with a MoTe2-integrated microring resonator and microdisk resonator, the modulation is as efficient as 17.76 and 158.48 pm/mW while the rise/fall time is 3.7/3.6 and 1.5/3.3 μs, respectively. This is the highest tuning efficiency and the fastest response speed among all-optical silicon modulators based on the photothermal effect of two-dimensional materials under the out-of-plane pumping configuration. Furthermore, the manufacturing processes of the present devices are developed from in situ grown MoTe2 nanosheets on a silicon-on-insulator platform, which is CMOS-compatible, stable, and suitable for large-scale photonic integration. In this paper, high-order microring resonator filters coupled serially up to the 7th order are proposed for on-chip optical interconnects. This work mainly focuses on achieving a flat-top, higher out-of-band rejection ratio, and enhanced group delay value than previously demonstrated microring filters. Further, the effect of varying inter-resonator coupling coefficients on the filtering operation of wavelength 1552 nm is investigated, using the continued fraction method, and optimum conditions for coupling coefficients between ring-ring waveguides are realized to obtain steep edge response. The realization of optical nonlinear activation functions (NAFs) is essential for integrated optical neural networks (ONNs). Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic method to implement reconfigurable and low-threshold all-optical NAFs based on a compact and high-Q add-drop microring resonator (MRR) on silicon. In the experiment, four different NAFs including softplus, radial basis, clamped ReLU, and sigmoid functions are realized by exploiting the thermo-optical (TO) effect of the MRR. The threshold to implement NAFs is as low as 0.08 mW. As a demonstration, a handwritten digit classification benchmark task is simulated based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) using the obtained activation functions, where an accuracy of 98% is realized. Thanks to the unique advantages of ultra-compact footprint and ultralow threshold, the proposed nonlinear unit is promising to be widely used in large-scale integrated ONNs.

We proposed and demonstrated an athermal microring resonator in high index-contrast chalcogenide glass film GeSbSe with SU-8 cladding. Due to the negative thermo-optic coefficient of SU-8, we experimentally achieved near athermal behavior with a minimum thermally induced resonance shift of 2 pm/°C at around 1550 nm, over twenty times less than that of a regular chalcogenide waveguide. Silicon photonics has been studied in various areas by providing small-footprint, high-performance, and mass-producible optoelectronic components integrated on a chip. For the photonic packaging, ultraviolet (UV) curing techniques have been widely utilized. Meanwhile, silica cladding absorption to UV light could alter its refractive index (RI), affecting the optical testing of silicon devices during or after the device packaging. Therefore, it is significant to characterize the dynamics of RI changes induced by UV-light irradiation. However, the in-situ characterization of such devices is seldom explored. Here, we studied the influence of UV-light irradiation on silicon photonic devices by probing resonant wavelength shifts of a racetrack microring resonator. Specifically, we studied the temporary variation of the resonant wavelength and its recovery time under different UV-light exposure durations. Experimental results show that with a UV energy of 21 J/cm2, the resonator had a maximum resonant wavelength shift of 0.31 nm, corresponding to an effective RI change of 0.0009 and recovering time of 95 minutes. Based on the experimental results, we compressively analyzed and compared RI changes induced by plasmon dispersion effect, thermal optical effect and photon-induced silica densification effect. Our study is expected to provide useful guidelines for in-situ silicon photonic testing and packaging.

The rising demand for bandwidth in optical communication networks has led to the need for more efficient solutions for spectrum allocation. This article presents a solution to enhance the capacity and efficiency of passive optical networks (PON) using optical microring resonators and dynamic spectrum allocation. The solution relies on wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). It proposes using a support vector machine (SVM) and a Routing, Modulation Level, and Spectrum Assignment (RMLSA) method to manage spectrum allocation based on the bandwidth and distance of multiple requests. The network employs a pulse shaper to physically allocate the spectrum, allowing for the separation of the spectrum generated by the microring resonators into different wavelengths or wavelength ranges (super-channel). Additionally, the SVM and RMLSA algorithms regulate the pulse shaper to execute the allocation. This photonic network achieves improved spectrum utilization and reduces the network blocking probability. Our proposal shows that we successfully addressed 1090 requests with a zero blocking probability, accounting for 81% of the total requests. These request scenarios can simultaneously accommodate up to 200 requests, with a maximum bandwidth of 31 THz. This highlights the efficacy of our approach in efficiently managing requests with substantial processing capacity.
