Recreational fisheries represent a socially, ecologically, and economically significant component of global fisheries. The U.S. Inland Creel and Angler Survey Catalog (CreelCat) database includes inland recreational fisheries survey data across the United States to facilitate large‐scale analyses. However, because survey methods differ, a statistical method capable of integrating these surveys is necessary to assess patterns and relationships across regions. Here, we developed a hierarchical generalized linear mixed modeling approach to estimate the relationship between daily recreational fisheries catch and effort based on waterbody, socio‐economic, and ecological covariates. We applied this approach to CreelCat data on lentic waterbodies and found that recreational fisheries catch and effort were non‐linearly related (i.e., catch per unit of effort declined as effort increased), where effort varied regionally and by waterbody area, median county age, and distance to nearest primary road. This modeling approach could be used to inform data‐poor regions or waterbodies, make comparisons across spatial scales, and, with the inclusion of socio‐economic and ecological factors, inform management techniques in an era of shifting demographics and landscapes. Carbon dioxide (C[O.sub.2]) in water has been explored for use as an invasive species deterrent system. To date, studies have not determined C[O.sub.2] avoidance by fish in flowing water, and this is a necessary step before an operational deterrent system can be implemented. The objective of the study was to define how flowing water influences the response of bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) to continuous plugs of C[O.sub.2]. A choice experiment by which C[O.sub.2] was injected into channels of an annular flowing water flume was completed. In trials when C[O.sub.2] was injected into the inner vein, fish spent less time in the vein when compared with control conditions. An increased amount of lateral movements and reduced performance were also observed when fish were exposed to elevated C[O.sub.2]. The study demonstrates that bighead carp in flowing water enriched with C[O.sub.2] move away, a finding consistent with static water experiments. Lakes respond heterogeneously to climate, with implications for fisheries management. We analyzed walleye (Sander vitreus) recruitment to age-0 in 359 lakes in Wisconsin, USA, to (i) quantify the relationship between annual water temperature degree days (DD) and walleye recruitment success and (ii) identify the influence of lake characteristics--area, conductivity, largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) catch rates, and mean DD--on this relationship. The relationship between walleye recruitment and annual DD varied among lakes and was not distinguishable from zero overall (posterior mean = -0.11, 90% CI = -0.34,0.15). DD effects on recruitment were negative in 198 lakes (55%) and positive in 161(45%). The effect of annual DD was most negative in lakes with high largemouth bass densities, and, on average, the probability of recruitment was highest in large lakes with low largemouth bass densities. Conductivity and mean DD influenced neither recruitment nor the effect of annual DD. Walleye recruitment was most resilient to warming in lakes with few largemouth bass, suggesting that the effects of climate change depend on lake-specific food-web and habitat contexts. Humans are visual beings, and everything we look at initiates a cascade of cognitive reactions that hopefully ends in information transfer and understanding. In summary, although there are many potential cognitive biases that may influence figure interpretation ( I see i Dimara et al. [6] for a review), the most common biases can be alleviated by choosing figure designs that match the underlying data, representing data along meaningful and consistent axis ranges, and ensuring that figure element differences are easily discernable. Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have been linked to effects in a wide range of ecosystems and organisms, with negative effects of elevated CO2 documented for marine organisms. Less is known about the dynamics of CO2 in freshwaters, but the potential exists for freshwater organisms to be challenged by elevated CO2. In flowing freshwaters CO2 exhibits more variability than in lakes or the ocean, yet spatiotemporally extensive direct measures of CO2 in freshwater are rare. However, CO2 can be estimated from pH, temperature, and alkalinity—commonly collected water quality metrics. We used data from the National Water Quality Monitoring Council along with the program PHREEQC to estimate CO2 in flowing freshwaters across 35,000 sites spanning the lower 48 US states from 1990 through 2020. Site data for water chemistry measurements were spatially joined with the National Hydrology Dataset. Our resulting dataset, CDFLOW, presents an opportunity for researchers to add CO2 to their datasets for further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
