This special issue illustrates that the securitisation of migration is not a linear process but a spiralling phenomenon, which involves different actors, and their policies, practices and narratives, in a spiralling progression that both self-fulfils and reinforces migration-security nexus’ dynamics. By proposing a cognitive ontology to understand the social construction of migration as a security threat, the introduction to this special issue proposes a categorisation of cognitions, mandates, constituencies and interests of state and non-state actors. Through a dichotomisation of these categories, it is possible to clarify how and why they either socially construct or deconstruct migration as a threat. In particular, the special issue identifies in prejudicial cognitions one of the main reasons for which a variety of actors enact practices and produce narratives that contribute to both securitising migration and reinforcing its nexus with crime, and the consequent social construction of ‘migration crises’. The different contributions to this special issue prove the arguments here exposed with a different analysis of how migration has been dealt with at either governmental or non-governmental levels.

This text looks at the fluid intersection in the emergence and development of Zionism and the later Zionist-promoted emigration of Moroccan Jews to Israel from what was the Spanish Protectorate zone in Morocco and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla in the north of Sherifian state. This process has received less attention from scholars than similar events in the French zone. However, it has some particularities that merit specific attention. From the early years of contact between North Moroccan Jews and European Zionism, the strong cultural identity of the Sephardim in the region and the mobilization of a Spanish approach informed by philo-Sephardism marked an important difference with regard to the French zone in the reception of Zionism and the organization of emigration to Israel. Paradoxically, in the Spanish protectorate, such process resulted in the disappearance of important historic Sephardic centers like Tetouan, Larache, and Ksar-el-Kebir.

Las sociedades italiana y española tienen muchos puntos en común, siendo uno de ellos la problemática derivada de la integración de las personas inmigrantes en los entornos sociales. Principalmente por la presión de los flujos migratorios en algunas localizaciones de ambos países. La respuesta del derecho, y en concreto del derecho constitucional, para integrar y facilitar el reconocimiento de derechos a estas personas también es notoria, pero pese a ello siguen produciéndose hechos que dificultan una integración real y efectiva. Paralelamente, ambos países han desarrollado reciente normativa para implementar políticas participativas a través de las nuevas tecnologías. Por ello, la combinación de ambas realidades es un punto de partida para fomentar una más y mejor integración de los inmigrantes en ambos países, promoviendo políticas de integración que posibiliten la participación de los inmigrantes en asuntos públicos, a través de los avances tecnológicos. Precisamente el uso de estos dispositivos puede suponer una mejora sustancial en la presencia de la población inmigrante en procesos participativos y, con ellos, una mejor inserción social en la política y cultura, tanto española como italiana

Tutor: Hernández, Fernando (Hernández Hernández), [spa] Esta memoria surge tras mi participación como estudiante de prácticas en el proyecto de investigación europeo MiCreate (Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe). En un contexto de investigación sobre la migración, doy cuenta de las tensiones y dilemas éticos que encontramos tanto en el marco del proyecto como durante el trabajo de campo. Para ello se realiza una aproximación etnográfica y se toma en cuenta mi experiencia desde una posición de observadora participante, las notas del cuaderno de campo, grabaciones de voz y la realización de cinco entrevistas a investigadores e investigadoras del proyecto. Se analiza desde una perspectiva de la ética relacional y del cuidado, y a partir de las nociones de reciprocidad y response-ability., [eng] This report follows my participation as a trainee in the European research project MiCreate (Migrant Children and Communities in a Transforming Europe). In a context of research on migration, I report on the ethical tensions and dilemmas that we encountered both within the framework of the project and during fieldwork. This is done through an ethnographic approach and takes into account my experience as a participant observer, the notes in the field notebook, voice recordings and five interviews with researchers from the project. It is analysed from the perspective of relational ethics and care, and from the notions of reciprocity and response-ability.

No es tarea fácil cuantificar las migraciones motivadas por cuestiones medioambientales derivadas de la crisis climática. La relación entre migración y cambio climático es compleja. Los condicionantes ambientales no actúan como únicos factores determinantes de la movilidad de las personas; se conjugan con procesos económicos, sociales o políticos.

Este artículo presenta la percepción de profesionales-expertos y de adolescentes del África Occidental sobre su proceso migratorio, y su paso por España cuando se dirigen hacia Europa. Tiene por objetivo 1) identificar estímulos para migrar, 2) analizar la influencia de la familia en la toma de decisión y 3) señalar condicionantes del proceso migratorio. Se utilizaron técnicas cualitativas como relato de vida, panel de profesionales-expertos, Delphi y DAFO. Los resultados profundizan en la escasez de recursos económicos familiares, el estatus de adulto que el adolescente recibe en origen, bajos ingresos y escasa cualificación como estímulos motivacionales para decidir migrar. Como conclusión, se identifica esta migración construida en idénticos parámetros que de adultos. Se hallaron percepciones diferentes entre adolescentes y profesionales en cuanto a las remesas y la influencia familiar para migrar. Como implicaciones para la práctica se detectó la necesidad de especializar a los profesionales del sistema de protección que atienden estos adolescentes.

Aquest projecte sorgeix d'un voluntariat a l'associació Colors del Món amb l'objectiu d'ajudar a la comissió de comunicació i sensibilització. A partir d'un anàlisi de les necessitats de comunicació es planteja un pla per donar a conèixer l'associació i millorar la seva imatge. Este proyecto surge de un voluntariado en la asociación Colors del Món con el objetivo de ayudar a la comisión de comunicación y sensibilización. A partir de un análisis de las necesidades de comunicación se plantea un plan para dar a conocer la asociación y mejorar su imagen. This project arises from a voluntary work at the association Colors del Món with the aim to help their commission of communication and awareness. From an analysis of the communication needs, a plan is outlined to make the association known and improve its image.

Today’s management of migration is strongly dependent on the role of reception centres. Despite their crucial role, scholars of the securitisation of migration have overlooked at how they affect the process. In the light shed by this special issue, the present contribution analyses non-state actors’ cognitions and narratives in the management of reception centres, so as to explain their performative roles in securitising or de-securitising human mobility as a threat. Its findings prove that, when reception centres’ managers hold prejudicial cognitions, they develop negative practices that produce hostile and stereotyped narratives. A multi-method comparative case study, including covert ethnography, field observation and in-depth interviews, shows that, differently from speech-acts, narratives do not need to be accepted by the audience to exercise their effects. The audience is impressed from the narratives, which in a performative act, make people feel and perceive what the narration stages [Alexander, J. 2004. ‘Cultural Pragmatics: Social Performance between Ritual and Strategy.’ Sociological Theory 22 (4): 527–573; Lyotard, J. Treballs Finals del Màster d'Economia, Facultat d'Economia i Empresa, Universitat de Barcelona, Curs: 2019-2020, Tutor: Rosina Moreno, Many European countries have focused on redistributing wealth across their territory through the decentralization of public services. This so-called functional decentralization is often carried out through investments in various education infrastructures in order to attract migrants into peripheral regions. However, do education infrastructures actually influence gross migratory patterns? It is not clear whether universities or specialized schools only play a role in a student’s short-term migration or if they also have an effect on the residential migration of households. Nonetheless, it is a key determinant of the potential success of a functional decentralization policy. This study will aim at defending the hypothesis that universities and specialized schools do have an important and positive impact on the gross migration inflows into a particular area. Studying such flows in the French province of Bouches-Du-Rhône, some evidence was found that specialized schools in agriculture have a decisive role in attracting migrants. This implies that the current policies focusing on the decentralization of the university system may not be as effective as the one focusing on specialized education infrastructures.

[spa] Esta tesis presenta una etnografía multisituada, complementada por una aproximación a la etnografía virtual, que explora las conexiones que se establecen entre de la comunidad mbororo en Camerún y aquellos/as mbororo que, después de iniciar un trayecto migratorio transnacional, actualmente residen en Europa, siendo éste un fenómeno bastante reciente entre la sociedad mbororo. Para poder relacionar experiencias entre Camerún y Europa, se ha propuesto una lectura desde un marco interseccional, dando cuenta de variabilidad de categorías sociales que determinan la configuración de experiencias de la identidad, y ahondando en una perspectiva que rompa con retóricas esencialistas entorno a la etnicidad. Los pastores mbororo de Camerún han sido reconocidos como población indígena en base a los criterios establecidos por la Comisión Africana de los Derechos Humanos y de los Pueblos, órgano dependiente de la Unión Africana, siguiendo los principios de la Convención 169 de la OIT y la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas. Paralelamente, los mbororo forman parte del gran bloque etnolingüístico peul, presente en toda la zona sudano-saheliana, y desde Mauritania hasta República Centroafricana. De este modo la identificación como pueblo indígena en Camerún, en contraste con otros grupos peul presentes en el país, permiten reconocer ciertas dinámicas de fortalecimiento de fronteras culturales, canalizadas por un gran movimiento asociativo que ha redefinido un discurso de exclusividad étnica en términos de derechos humanos y de ciudadanía. A pesar de la fortaleza del discurso sociopolítico de la comunidad mbororo en Camerún, los resultados preliminares de la etnografía transnacional constatan una debilitación de los vínculos con la comunidad de origen. Todo ello, más que mostrar una desconexión, ha permitido observar la expresión de una etnicidad como proceso identitario en transformación, en el que los sujetos se adhieren a referentes culturales de manera contextual, visibilizando que la experiencia identitaria debe aprehendida desde la contingencia. La tesis contribuye a los estudios sobre identidad y etnicidad y resitúa a los/as mbororo lejos de la figura mítica y ancestral del peul nómada y pastor, para aprehenderlos como sujetos agentes en la representación de su experiencia étnica., [eng] Based on a multi-sited ethnography with a complementary virtual fieldwork, this thesis explores the connections among those Mbororo in Cameroon and those whom, after a transnational migration journey, dwell in Europe. Methodologically, in order to entangle the experiences in Cameroon and in Europe, the thesis suggests an intersectional approach while rendering the variability of social categories that surround the experiences of identity while deepening in a perspective that breaks with essencializing rhetorics of ethnicity. Mbororo pastoralists of Cameroon have been recognized as indigenous population according to the criteria established by African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights. This latter being part of the African Union and following the 169 Convention of the ILO and The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Mbororo are part of the Fulani ethnolinguistic blog of the great south-sahelian area from Mauritania to Central African Republic. The identification as indigenous people in Cameroon in contrast to other Peul groups in the country, allows Cameroonian Mbororo to strengthen their cultural frontiers, this latter promoted by a vibrant associational movement which has (re)defined their ethnic particularism into human rights and citizenship rhetoric. In spite of the strength of the sociopolitical discourse of the Mbororo community in Cameroon, the preliminary results of this multi-sited ethnography confirm a debilitation of the ties with the original community in the moment of migration. Instead of describing this debilitation as a form of disconnection, the thesis argues for a notion of ethnicity as an identity process in transformation. It understands the experience of identity from the contingency in which subjects adopt cultural benchmarks according to their contextual needs and anxieties. On the whole, the thesis contributes to identity and ethnicity studies by approaching the Mbororo as agentive representatives of their own ethnic experience.

Treball fi de màster de: Master’s in International Relations. Curs 2017-2018 The aim of this paper is to understand the progressive feminization of migratory flows from Tunisia to Europe over the period 2010-2017. The observed increase in female migration took place in the context of economic crises in both sending and receiving countries. In Tunisia, it coincided with dramatic changes at the political, economic and social level that followed the 2011 revolution. In Europe, the issue of migration experienced another wave of politicization during the same period. In light of those developments, the paper studies the different behavior of male and female migrants. It applies a case-oriented approach, testing seven hypotheses derived from standard migration theories, as well as feminist approaches. The results of multivariate regression analyses confirm the importance of migratory networks and unemployment in receiving countries, while bivariate analysis suggests that the severe impact of the Tunisian economic crisis on women may have been an additional driver of female emigration rates. More importantly, a generation of increasingly well-educated women, with very restricted labor market access in Tunisia, are faced with European migration policies favoring the highly-skilled. Due to a growing demand in immigration countries for services traditionally performed by female workers, as well as the need for highly-skilled workers to support technological change, the trend towards a feminization of Tunisian emigration is likely to last.

En este trabajo analizamos los determinantes del logro educativo para la población inmigrante en España, así como su grado de movilidad intergeneracional educativa, comparando estos resultados con el resto de residentes en nuestro país. Como fuente de información, utilizamos la encuesta EU-SILC de 2011, que incluye un módulo de transmisión intergeneracional de pobreza. Gracias a este módulo, podemos conocer el nivel académico de los progenitores y compararlo con el alcanzado por sus hijos. Para analizar los determinantes del logro educativo, utilizamos una estimación de máxima verosimilitud, teniendo en cuenta variables del propio individuo, de su familia y de su entorno, mientras que el estudio de movilidad educativa está basado en las tres técnicas más utilizadas en este tipo de trabajos: correlación, regresión y matrices de transición. Respecto al logro educativo, la estimación efectuada indica que la condición de inmigrante tiene un efecto negativo sobre el nivel académico alcanzado. Además, el nivel académico de los inmigrantes está muy relacionado con el de sus madres y con la situación económica del hogar donde crecieron. En cuanto a la movilidad intergeneracional, se observa una clara mejoría en la situación de todos los individuos analizados respecto a sus madres. Sin embargo, el grado de movilidad es muy diferente en función del género. Los hombres presentan unos indicadores similares independientemente de su lugar de nacimiento, mientras que las mujeres inmigrantes tienen una movilidad inferior a las de origen español. This paper analyzes the determinants of educational attainment among immigrants in Spain and their degree of intergenerational educational mobility compared to Spanish individuals. The EU-SILC survey of 2011, which includes a module on intergenerational transmission of poverty, is used as a source of information. This module allows identifying the educational attainment of parents and comparing it with the educational attainment of their children. To analyze the determinants of educational attainment, a maximum likelihood estimation is used taking into account variables related to the individual, his/ her family and his/her environment. The study of intergenerational mobility is based on three widely used techniques in the literature: correlation, regression and transition matrices. With respect to educational attainment, the estimation indicates that immigrant status has a negative effect on educational attainment. In addition, the educational level of immigrants is closely related to the educational level of their mothers and the economic situation of the home where they grew up. Educational mobility is high in all the groups observed, but is very different according to gender. Men have similar indicators regardless of their place of birth, while immigrant women have less mobility than Spanish women. En aquest treball analitzem els determinants de l'èxit educatiu per a la població immigrant a Espanya, així com el seu grau de mobilitat intergeneracional educativa, comparant aquests resultats amb la resta de residents al nostre país. Com a font d'informació, utilitzem l'enquesta EU-SILC de 2011, que inclou un mòdul de transmissió intergeneracional de pobresa. Gràcies a aquest mòdul, podem conèixer el nivell acadèmic dels progenitors i comparar-lo amb l'assolit pels seus fills. Per analitzar els determinants de l'èxit educatiu, utilitzem una estimació de màxima versemblança, tenint en compte variables del mateix individu, de la seva família i del seu entorn, mentre que l'estudi de mobilitat educativa està basat en les tres tècniques més utilitzades en aquest tipus de treballs: correlació, regressió i matrius de transició. Respecte a l'èxit educatiu, l'estimació efectuada indica que la condició d'immigrant té un efecte negatiu sobre el nivell acadèmic aconseguit. A més, el nivell acadèmic dels immigrants està molt relacionat amb el de les seves mares i amb la situació econòmica de la llar on van créixer. Quant a la mobilitat intergeneracional, s'observa una clara millora en la situació de tots els individus analitzats respecte de les seves mares. No obstant això, el grau de mobilitat és molt diferent en funció del gènere. Els homes presenten uns indicadors similars independentment del seu lloc de naixement, mentre que les dones immigrants tenen una mobilitat inferior a les d'origen espanyol.

[cat] A l’Antic Egipte l’or va representar des dels inicis el metall amb el qual els Faraons eren venerats. Va ser per aquesta qüestió que es varen necessitar grans quantitats d’aquest element per satisfer la ostentació i el poder d’aquests Reis. Coneixem per les fonts textuals, papirològiques i arqueològiques que l’or es va explotar des del període Predinàstic. Ens interessa en aquest estudi aprofundir en els Períodes del Regne Nou (1539 -1077 a C), i també el Ptolemaic (332-30 a C). El primer per ser el període en què es va explotar més quantitat d’or per a la producció de joies, escultures i materials d’indole sacra. El segon perquè representa una aproximació a la nostra era, i sobretot perquè ens aproxima, en certa forma a les fonts de l’Àfrica occidental. En aquest estudi partim d’un decalatge de les dades de consum d’or que diferents investigadors ens han donat a partir de les seves investigacions. Aquests autors, d’escoles ben diferenciades en el temps, ens donen unes dades sobre l’extracció de l’or que difereixen de molt segons es tracti de l’escola alemanya de Quiring (1948) o de Klemm (2001,2012). Quasi bé set dècades de temps separen les apreciacions de les dues escoles sobre les dades del consum de l’or a l’Antic Egipte. Donat aquest decalatge tant gran amb les dades nosaltres proposem una hipòtesi: l’or hauria hagut de provenir de rutes comercials de llocs lluny del món egipci. Proposem les rutes transsaharianes com una possibilitat per a refermar la hipòtesi del comerç de l’or entre l’Àfrica occidental i l’Antic Egipte. Durant el període del Regne Nou els intercanvis comercials entre Egipte i els països veïns es varen produir en tres direccions ben definides: la via del NNE o els països del Pròxim Orient, la via del Sud, és a dir el Sudan i el mateix País de Punt del qual avui en dia encara es desconeix la seva ubicació exacte i la via transsahariana, és a dir la via occidental justament la que connecta amb l’Àfrica Occidental. Per a realitzar aquest estudi partim de registres arqueològics, papirològics i també etnogràfics. Egipte ens ha donat la major part de la documentació de la època basada en aquests registres papirològics, textuals i també arqueològics. A l’Àfrica Occidental en canvi, la majoria d’aquests registres són inexistents. En aquesta part de l’Àfrica els registres a partir dels quals podrem obtenir informacions son la transmissió oral ( com el cas del poble Peül amb el conte de Kaidara, per exemple) i també els registres etnogràfics, és a dir els que ens porten les persones. A partir d’aquest darrers estudis es tracta de poder posar en evidència les possibles relacions existents entre l’Egipte Antic i l’àrea de l’Àfrica Occidental. És per aquesta raó que a partir d’estudis etnogràfics actuals traurem conclusions sobre les evidències actuals que ens connecten amb el passat i on la comparació dels mètodes d’explotació que es realitzaren a l’antiguitat evidencien similituds amb els que actualment es desenvolupen en aquesta part de l’Àfrica. Els orpailleurs actuals de l’Àfrica Occidental fan la recol·lecció, el rentat i la selecció de les petites pelletes d’or d’una forma molt semblant a la que ho feien a l’antiguitat els miners al desert Oriental i a Núbia, llocs on s’hauria explotat les quantitats més grans d’or en aquests períodes. Aquesta es suposadament una tècnica que a partir de l’extrapolació ens dona una sèrie d’indicis que ens porten a construir aquestes hipòtesis. Les rutes de l’or haurien començat molt probablement a la província autònoma del Bambouk i haurien arribat a Egipte. Si les rutes de connexió haurien estat fetes a peu entravessant el desert és encara una tessitura prematura, però plantejable. Aquest estudi inclou un apartat sobre les migracions actuals. Aquestes seguirien patrons forjats en aquestes rutes antigues. Les rutes de l’or en son una d’elles que obliguen als migrants de l’Àfrica Occidental a arribar fins al Líban actual per a creuar el Mediterrani i arribar fins a Europa., [eng] In Ancient Egypt, gold represented, from the beginning, the metal with which the Pharaohs were venerated. Because of this great quantity of this element would be required to satisfy the ostentation and power of these Kings. We know by textual, papirologic and archeologic sources that gold was exploited starting at the Predynsatic period. In this study, we are interested in delving deeper in the Periods of New Kingdom (1539-1077 B.C.), and, in the Ptolemaic (332-30 B.C.). The first one for being the period during which the largest quantity of gold was exploited for jewelry production, sculpting and the production of “sacred materials”. The second one because it represents an approximation to our own era, and most of all because it somehow gets us closer to the sources of West Africa. Authors from different schools provide us with data about gold extraction, which differ from one anoteher according to the German schools of Quiring (1948) or Klemm (2001). Given such a big offset with the data we propose a hypothesis: gold should have been brought by commercial routes from places far away from the Egyptian world. We propose the Trans-Saharan routes as a possibility to reform the hypothesis of gold commerce between West Africa and Ancient Egypt. The modern West African orpailleurs (gold panners) gather, clean and select gold with pallets in a similar way to how it was done in ancient times by miners from Eastern Desert and Nubia, places where the largest quantities of gold have been extracted during these periods. This is supposedly a technique that gives us a series of signs from extrapolation that led us to construct this hypothesis. The gold routes would have probably started in the autonomous province of Bambouk and would have arrived in Egypt. The possibility of connecting routes being travelled on foot, traversing the desert, is doubtful but may still be considered. This study includes a section on modern migrations. These would have followed patterns forged in these ancient routes. The gold routes are some that force West African migrants to travel toward modern Lebanon to cross the Mediterranean Sea so as to arrive in Europe.

Este número temático de la revista Scripta Nova. Revista Electrónica de Geografía y Ciencias Sociales recoge una selección de seis textos presentados en X Congreso de la Asociación de Demografía Histórica (ADEH), celebrado en Albacete en junio de 2013. Se presentaron concretamente en tres sesiones que tenían como nexo en común el tema de los cambios migratorios recientes en España y el impacto que la fuerte crisis económica iniciada en 2008 ha tenido en los flujos migratorios, tanto internos como exteriores, protagonizados por españoles y extranjeros

Menores aymara han experimentado un proceso migratorio importante durante las últimas décadas, sin embargo, se han desarrollado escasos estudios en población infantil perteneciente a esta etnia. El objetivo de esta investigación es evaluar y comparar las estrategias de afrontamiento utilizado por niños y niñas Aymara y no Aymara. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 685 niños/as entre 9 y 15 años de escuelas municipales y colegios particular subvencionados de la ciudad de Arica. Los resultados muestran la inexistencia de diferencias poblacionales entre niños/as aymara y no aymara en relación a los problemas experimentados (pχ2> .05), el uso de estrategias de afrontamiento utilizadas (pt> .05) y la eficacia de estas últimas (pt> .05). Se concluye que los niños/as pertenecientes a la etnia estarían logrando adecuados mecanismos de afrontamiento en contextos urbanos.

[cat] La diversitat observada en els grups humans ha estat àmpliament documentada per antropòlegs segons els coneixements i tècniques disponibles en cada moment. Actualment, un dels aspectes en els quals s’està invertint molt d’esforç és en la modelització dels fenotips anomenats complexos, fruit de la interacció d’un elevat nombre de components genètics i ambientals, on hi trobem moltes malalties. Alguns d’aquests fenotips presenten grans diferències entre les poblacions humanes, i per tant, també els seus factors causants. Per tal d’entendre la distribució observada d’aquests fenotips i els seus factors determinants, és necessari fer una ullada a la història demogràfica de les poblacions. En aquest context, aquesta tesi és un estudi antropogenètic de diferents gens, el gen del factor de coagulació XIII (F13A1) i els gens de les sintases d’òxid nítric (NOS), implicats en un fenotip complex amb variació poblacional com són les malalties cardiovasculars. Les nostres poblacions d’estudi es situen al voltant de la Mediterrània i al continent europeu, on, tot i tractar-se d’una àrea geogràfica no molt extensa, la variació en la presència de les malalties cardiovasculars és considerable. En un primer article, polimorfismes del gen F13A1 són analitzats en una mostra de 101 famílies de l’àrea de Barcelona. L’anàlisi de transmissió al•lèlica entre pares/mares i fills afectats d’infart de miocardi va mostrar una interacció intra-gènica degut a la sobretransmissió de la variant al•lèlica Pro564 de rs5982 en el subgrup de mostra on els fills afectats presentaven el genotip Val34-Val34 per rs5985, donant un paper pro-trombòtic del FXIII. Alhora, es va observar que l’al•lel més curt (3.2 repeticions) de F13A1-STR es trobava infratransmès, mentre que l’al•lel més llarg, d’entre els de més freqüència poblacional (7 repeticions), s’observava sobretransmès, apuntant cap a un paper regulador de F13A1-STR en l’expressió del gen F13A1 i, per tant, en la disponibilitat en sang del FXIII. En un segon article, un conjunt de 61 SNPs presents als tres gens NOS (NOS3, NOS1 i NOS2A) van ser analitzats per associació amb l’infart de miocardi en 2165 casos i 2153 controls D’aquests, 4 SNPs independents van presentar indicis d’associació amb la malaltia. El score de risc genètic a partir d’aquests 4 SNPs va explicar una contribució a l’infart de miocardi inferior al 1%. Per contra, en un conjunt de 34 mostres poblacionals, la mitjana poblacional del score es correlaciona positivament amb la incidència coronària registrada en 10 poblacions del projecte MONICA i n’explica fins a un 67% en dones i un 86% en homes, fruit de la colinearitat del score amb molts altres factors de risc amb la mateixa distribució poblacional. Aquest fet ens indica que l’estudi de la distribució genètica de risc ens pot ser molt útil per elaborar estratègies de prevenció en salut pública. Finalment, en un tercer article, mitjançant l’anàlisi de 114 SNPs i 17 STRs, es va determinar que les principals estructures de variació genètica en les poblacions eren gradients de continuïtat genètica distribuïts seguint eixos similars a nord-sud i est-oest. L’estimació de components genètics “ancestrals” va indicar l’existència de 3 components interpretats com d’origen Paleolític europeu, Paleolític nord africà i Neolític europeu. Aquests resultats s’ajusten a simulacions computacionals on aquesta distribució s’explicaria per un doble procés de Neolització: una expansió neolítica al continent europeu lligada a la cultura ceràmica Linearbandkeramik i una expansió neolítica a la Mediterrània lligada a la cultura ceràmica Cardial. Alhora, aquestes estimacions genètiques van explicar altes contribucions a la incidència coronària en 11 poblacions del projecte MONICA (36-98%), fet que indica que la predisposició poblacional a la malaltia és fruit de la demografia històrica de les poblacions i no a efectes d’adaptació al medi., [eng] Human diversity has been widely documented by anthropologists. Nowadays, modelling complex phenotypes is one of the top research areas. Complex phenotypes show different distribution among populations, as well as the factors that cause them. In this context, this thesis assessed the role of some polymorphisms of coagulation factor XIII gene (F13A1) and Nitric Oxide Synthase genes (NOS) in coronary artery diseases (CAD), and their distribution among European and Mediterranean populations in relation with coronary incidence. In the first article, F13A1 gene polymorphisms were tested in a sample of 101 families from the area of Barcelona. The analysis of allele transmission from parents to affected children showed an allele-allele interaction between Pro564 and Val34 allele variants of rs5982 and rs5985 polymorphisms. At the same time, an under-transmission of the shorter allele in size (3.2 repeats) and an over-transmission of the largest allele in size among common alleles (7 repeats) of F13A1-STR pointed to a regulatory role in F13A1 gene expression and, therefore , bloodstream FXIII availability. In the second study, for the first time, we proposed to estimate the genetic CAD predisposition at population level using genetic risk scores (GRS). A GRS, composed by 4 risk markers from NOS genes, explained less than 1% of CAD phenotype, but the mean value of GRS per population clearly correlated with CAD incidence explaining a 86% of coronary event rates in men and 67% in women. This phenomenon was explained by the colineal effect of several risk variants showing the same geographic distribution. Population GRS is a promising approach in public health interventions. Finally, in the third article, the analyses 114 SNPs and 17 microsatellites from NOS gene regions revealed a genetic structure among populations in genetic gradients distributed resembling north-south and east-west axes. Three ancestral components were estimated and interpreted as Palaeolithic European, Palaeolithic North African and Neolithic European genetic components. These results fitted a process of dual Neolithisation: one expansion in the European continent leaded by the Linearbandkeramk culture and another in the Mediterranean Basin linked to the Cardial ceramic culture. At the same time, the population structure estimates explained a large proportion of coronary events rates (36-98%), indicating that population predisposition to coronary disease is the result of demography instead of an adaptation to the environment.

Gràcies als descobriments de l'arqueologia dels últims 20 anys noves llums han aparegut al voltant de la magnitud de la migració escandinava a les illes, així com de la importància que van tenir en aquesta les dones, fins ara menyspreades. Per il·lustrar l'assentament víking he mostrat el cas de la ciutat de York, seu d'una important comunitat víkinga i amb prou restes materials per evidenciar l'impacte nòrdic a sòl anglès i la revifada de la vida del món urbà, després de dècades de decadència. He posat l'èmfasi en el paper de la dona, doncs és el camp que ha patit més canvis i controvèrsies, i en l'aplicació dels nous avenços científics, que han aportat una munió de dades que ha permès replantejar algunes idees i hipotetitzar-ne de noves. En referència a això i a la convivència entre víkings i anglosaxons, he parlat de dues foses comunes descobertes el 2008 i 2009, amb les restes de quasi un centenar d'individus que han estat identificats com a escandinaus, però entorn els quals s'ha obert un gran debat sobre si eren pirates, mercenaris o grangers, el que es consideraria un genocidi.

Els armenis i les armènies de Barcelona, arribats des dels anys 90 després de la caiguda del règim de la URSS, formen part del que tant els mateixos armenis com aquells que n'estudien la història anomenen la segona diàspora armènia. Aquest article tracta el paper de la religió armènia en la vivència de la diàspora, a partir de la història del país i de l'església Apostòlica Armènia, així com del treball de camp consistent en entrevistes a armenis i l'observació de diferents misses celebrades a Barcelona. Les entrevistes ens parlen no tan sols de la història del país sinó de l'experiència de vida del fet religiós de l'armeni en la diàspora, i com aquesta experiència connecta amb la identitat cultural armènia.

Des dels inicis de l'ocupació francesa d'Algèria, a les acaballes de la primera meitat del segle XIX, un gran nombre de valencians, menorquins, andalusos i murcians, fugint de la misèria i de la fam o com a conseqüència de la inestabilitat política i social d'Espanya, es dirigiren al país magrebí a la cerca d'una vida millor. Aquesta migració es perllongà al llarg de més d'un segle, i es va caracteritzar pel seu dinamisme: un flux continu d'entrades i eixides i una gran heterogeneïtat de procedències. L'amalgama creada a l'Algèria colonial amb la coexistència i interacció de diferents realitats culturals, donà lloc a un nou sentiment d'identitat dins la comunitat d'origen europeu, impulsat per una solidaritat espontània dirigida a assolir una estabilitat econòmica i de subsistència, però també per un esforç polític premeditat de l'administració colonial francesa adreçat a cohesionar, mitjançant la francització, els europeus i jueus del país nord-africà Since the beginning of the French occupation of Algeria, at the end of the first half of the nineteenth century, a large number of people from Valencia, Menorca, Murcia and Andalusia, fleeing from poverty and hunger as a result of Spain’s political and social instability, headed for the North African country in search of a better life. This migration lasted for over a century, and was characterized by its dynamism: a continuous flow of arrivals and exits and a great variety of origins. The melting-pot created in French Algeria due to the coexistence and interaction of different cultural realities gave rise to a new sense of identity within the community of European origin, driven by a spontaneous solidarity aimed at achieving subsistence and economic stability, but also by a deliberate political effort of the French colonial administration focused on building group cohesion, through gallicisation, of Europeans and Jews in the north African country

There is great scientific and popular interest in understanding the genetic history of populations in the Americas. We wish to understand when different regions of the continent were inhabited, where settlers came from, and how current inhabitants relate genetically to earlier populations. Recent studies unraveled parts of the genetic history of the continent using genotyping arrays and uniparental markers. The 1000 Genomes Project provides a unique opportunity for improving our understanding of population genetic history by providing over a hundred sequenced low coverage genomes and exomes from Colombian (CLM), Mexican-American (MXL), and Puerto Rican (PUR) populations. Here, we explore the genomic contributions of African, European, and especially Native American ancestry to these populations. Estimated Native American ancestry is 48% in MXL, 25% in CLM, and 13% in PUR. Native American ancestry in PUR is most closely related to populations surrounding the Orinoco River basin, confirming the Southern America ancestry of the Taíno people of the Caribbean. We present new methods to estimate the allele frequencies in the Native American fraction of the populations, and model their distribution using a demographic model for three ancestral Native American populations. These ancestral populations likely split in close succession: the most likely scenario, based on a peopling of the Americas 16 thousand years ago (kya), supports that the MXL Ancestors split 12.2kya, with a subsequent split of the ancestors to CLM and PUR 11.7kya. The model also features effective populations of 62,000 in Mexico, 8,700 in Colombia, and 1,900 in Puerto Rico. Modeling Identity-by-descent (IBD) and ancestry tract length, we show that post-contact populations also differ markedly in their effective sizes and migration patterns, with Puerto Rico showing the smallest effective size and the earlier migration from Europe. Les migracions han estat i són una constant en la història. Són fenòmens complexos, multidimensionals i multicausals, en constant evolució i que, en nombroses ocasions, han estat un factor determinant en les transformacions polítiques, socials, econòmiques i culturals de les regions d’origen, de destí i de trànsit. La immigració pot satisfer les necessitats del país d’origen i del país d’acollida. Però en les societats democràtiques planteja un altre repte: com integrar als immigrants com a ciutadans de ple dret? Aquest treball pretén endinsar-nos en la realitat de les migracions actuals a casa nostra, analitzant-la des d’una vessant teòrica i apropant-nos també a aquest fenomen a través d’un estudi de casos amb el qual ens endinsarem en la història de vida dels veritables protagonistes d’aquest episodi de la nostra història

The population of Argentina is the result of the intermixing between several groups, including Indigenous American, European and African populations. Despite the commonly held idea that the population of Argentina is of mostly European origin, multiple studies have shown that this process of admixture had an impact in the entire Argentine population. In the present study we characterized the distribution of Indigenous American, European and African ancestry among individuals from different regions of Argentina and evaluated the level of discrepancy between self-reported grandparental origin and genetic ancestry estimates. A set of 99 autosomal ancestry informative markers (AIMs) was genotyped in a sample of 441 Argentine individuals to estimate genetic ancestry. We used non-parametric tests to evaluate statistical significance. The average ancestry for the Argentine sample overall was 65% European (95%CI: 63-68%), 31% Indigenous American (28-33%) and 4% African (3-4%). Most individuals throughout the Americas are admixed descendants of Native American, European, and African ancestors. Complex historical factors have resulted in varying proportions of ancestral contributions between individuals within and among ethnic groups. We developed a panel of 446 ancestry informative markers (AIMs) optimized to estimate ancestral proportions in individuals and populations throughout Latin America. We used genome-wide data from 953 individuals from diverse African, European, and Native American populations to select AIMs optimized for each of the three main continental populations that form the basis of modern Latin American populations. We selected markers on the basis of locus-specific branch length to be informative, well distributed throughout the genome, capable of being genotyped on widely available commercial platforms, and applicable throughout the Americas by minimizing within-continent heterogeneity. We then validated the panel in samples from four admixed populations by comparing ancestry estimates based on the AIMs panel to estimates based on genome-wide association study (GWAS) data. The panel provided balanced discriminatory power among the three ancestral populations and accurate estimates of individual ancestry proportions (R2>0.9 for ancestral components with significant between-subject variance). Finally, we genotyped samples from 18 populations from Latin America using the AIMs panel and estimated variability in ancestry within and between these populations. This panel and its reference genotype information will be useful resources to explore population history of admixture in Latin America and to correct for the potential effects of population stratification in admixed samples in the region., Author Summary Individuals from Latin America are descendants of multiple ancestral populations, primarily Native American, European, and African ancestors. The relative proportions of these ancestries can be estimated using genetic markers, known as ancestry informative markers (AIMs), whose allele frequency varies between the ancestral groups. Once determined, these ancestral proportions can be correlated with normal phenotypes, can be associated with disease, can be used to control for confounding due to population stratification, or can inform on the history of admixture in a population. In this study, we identified a panel of AIMs relevant to Latin American populations, validated the panel by comparing estimates of ancestry using the panel to ancestry determined from genome-wide data, and tested the panel in a diverse set of populations from the Americas. The panel of AIMs produces ancestry estimates that are highly accurate and appropriately controlled for population stratification, and it was used to genotype 18 populations from throughout Latin America. We have made the panel of AIMs available to any researcher interested in estimating ancestral proportions for populations from the Americas.

This paper reads Bharati Mukherjee’s short story “The Management of Grief” as an uncompromised critique of Canadian Multiculturalism at its early stage in the 1980s. Without neglecting the crucially humanist component of Mukherjee’s investment in writing this story, the article demonstrates how, through subtle strategies of representation, “The Management of Grief” presents Canada as a country where whiteness-as-power is pervasive, and where ethnic minorities are perceived by mainstream society as exogenous, and made to feel as such. Together with this, the story as an archetypical representation of the predicament of diasporas, understood, pace Vijay Mishra and others, in the sense of the diasporic condition perceived as dominated by melancholia. The story evokes the diaspora experience in several other ways, most notably with its emphasis on the in-between status of such communities in an identitarian, affective and political sense. The analysis eventually focuses on how the story underscores and subtly illuminates the process of a political empowerment, an awareness-raising process which, accompanied by a coming-into-political-agency, marks a turning point in the increasingly relevant political role played by diasporas within the multicultural nation state.
