The treatment protocol for patients with chronic low back pain and radiculopathy consisted in the application of two complementary therapies: 1) Infiltration of paravertebral ozone to decompress the disc and reverse the levels of proinflammatory cytokines secreted by the affected disc cells and 2) Electronic Synaptic Activation (SEA) in the affected pelvic member, to regenerate the affected nerves. The lumbar paravertebral ozone therapy protocol consisted of 12 infiltrations applied as follows: placement of the patient in the prone position, palpation of the spinous process suggestive of the level L4-L5, localization and marking of the points 2 cm laterally of the lumbar spinous process, asepsis with Iodopovidona and infiltration with needle 23G x 60mm or 80 mm depending on the thickness of the adipose panniculus in a slow manner in each site 10 ml of the ozone-oxygen mixture, at a concentration of 27 mcg / ml. The Synaptic 4000 PRO system (The Synaptic Corporation., 3176 S. Peoria Ct. Ste 110 Aurora, CO, USA), device was used, which received on June 20, 1997 authorization from the FDA for the relief and treatment of intractable chronic pain and for the treatment of acute postoperative and post-traumatic pain. This high frequency system provides electronic and transcutaneous stimulation in the lumbar region and along the path of the sciatic nerve through a pulse generator with one or two conductors. The SEA system supplies 400 to 40,000 Hertz and direct current (up to 57 mAmp); each therapy is made up of a set of electronic signals that are constantly changing in relation to frequency, duration and intensity since it is considered that if the same impulses are applied, the nervous system becomes refractory to the stimulus. The SEA treatment protocol consisted of 12 therapies, one every third day, by placing electrodes on the cutaneous surface, one at the level of the lumbar spine and three along the affected pelvic member following the path of the sciatic nerve: posterior aspect back of the thigh, calf and sole; in the case of bilateral low back pain and radiculopathy, electrodes were applied to both limbs in the same way. Each of the 12 SEA therapies lasted 20 minutes.

In codon 72 of the p53 antioncogene there are two alleles, arginine and proline; the arg/arg genotype has recently been identified as a risk factor for developing of cervicouterine cancer (CuCa) associated to human papillomavirus (HVP) infection. The aim of this work was to determine in a sample of women the frequency of proline-arginine alleles and genotypes of p53 codon 72. The study was conducted in a sample of inpatient women at the hospital. p53 codon 72 alleles were determined in genomic ADN by amplification of specific sequences by chi 2 test. From 102 analyzed samples, p53-arginine allele corresponded to 67.64% and p53-proline allele corresponded to 32.36%; 47 women (46.10%) were arg/arg homocygotes, 11 women (10.77%) were pro/pro homocygotes, 44 women (43.13%) were arg/pro heterocigotes; the genotype distribution was within the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The detection of a high percentage of arginine homocygotes suggests that this genotype, considered as a risk factor for cancer associated to oncogenic HPV, has a high prevalence in the north of Mexico. The determination of this kind of polymorphisms is important as preventive action with regard to identification of risk factors for CaCu associated to HPV infection.
