espanolEl maiz es un cultivo de importancia economica a nivel mundial. La expresividad de las caracteristicas genotipicas y fenotipicas, son afectadas por las condiciones ambientales a la que se expone la planta. Por ello el objetivo de la presente investigacion fue evaluar el desarrollo y rendimiento del cultivo de maiz, para aportar con la expansion de la frontera agricola, utilizando cuatro hibridos de maiz, durante el periodo noviembre – febrero 2016. El ensayo se desarrollo en la parroquia Luz de America, provincia Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas – Ecuador. El manejo se llevo acabo realizando fertilizacion y control de plagas del cultivo de forma identica en todos los tratamientos, los hibridos usados fueron; Trueno-NB-7443, Iniap-H-551, Pioneer-F30K73 y Gladiador-DOW-2B-688; se evaluaron las variables rendimiento por hectarea, longitud de la mazorca, diametro de la mazorca y peso de la mazorca, numero de hojas, altura de la planta, insercion a la mazorca, y mazorcas por planta. Donde el hibrido que mejor se desarrollo en la zona de Luz de America fue Pioneer-F., al expresar altos rendimientos en cuanto a produccion por hectarea; siendo Trueno-NB., e Iniap-H., los que ocupan rangos no significativos estadisticamente y durante la mayor parte de la evaluacion Gladiador DOW 2B-688; es el menos potencializado. Se concluye que el maiz tiende a adaptarse, favorablemente a distintos ambientes, sin embargo, dependiendo del medio agroecologico se puede expresar la tolerancia al estres que este genera, lo que se expresa mediante la produccion y el rendimiento. EnglishCorn is a crop of economic importance worldwide. The expression of genotypic and phenotypic characteristics are affected by the environmental conditions to which the plant is exposed. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the development and performance of the corn crop, to contribute with the expansion of the agricultural frontier, using four corn hybrids, during the period november – February 2016. The trial was developed in the parish of Luz de America, province of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas – Ecuador. The management was carried out by performing fertilization and pest control of the crop equally in all treatments, the hybrids used were; Thunder-NB-7443, Iniap-H-551, Pioneer-F30K73 and Gladiador-DOW-2B-688; The variables yield per hectare, length of the ear, diameter of the ear and weight of the ear, number of leaves, height of the plant, insertion to the ear, and ear per plant were evaluated. Where the hybrid that better developed in the zone of Luz de America was Pioneer-F., when expressing high yields in terms of production per hectare; being Trueno-NB., and Iniap-H., those that occupy statistically non-significant ranges and during most of the evaluation Gladiator DOW 2B-688; it is the least potentialized. It is concluded that corn tends to adapt, favorably to different environments, however, depending on the agroecological environment can be expressed the tolerance to stress that this generates, which is expressed through production and yield.

Las musáceas son muy importantes para fines de alimentación a nivel mundial, en el Ecuador estas ocupan el 20,57 % de la superficie plantada, siendo el cantón El Carmen, uno de los principales sitios dedicados a esta explotación. Por otra parte, Ralstonia solanacearum, es la causante de la enfermedad conocida como Moko de plátano, la cual puede desaparecer el 100 % de una plantación. El objetivo fue, realizar una caracterización morfológica y bioquímica de R. solanacearum Raza 2, bacteria patógena en cultivos de banano y plátano en El Carmen, Manabí, Ecuador. El análisis bioquímico y morfológico, se realizó en los laboratorios de la Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas-ESPE considerando los protocolos establecidos por diversos autores, las muestras se tomaron de plantaciones de plátano y banano (suelo y pseudotallo georeferenciadas), con síntomas de infección del Moko. Como resultado, se identificó virulencia en la mitad de las muestras, se confirmó que la bacteria es Gram negativa, en forma de bacilo, positiva a catalasa, indol negativa, con carácter oxidativo (energía en medios anaeróbicos); y fermentativos de lactosa y glucosa, sin presencia de ácido sulfhídrico, quien no fue capaz de hidrolizar almidón, in vitro; se confirmó que la temperatura de 4°C y pH de 4,5 inhiben el aumento de estas poblaciones bacterianas, sin embargo, los rangos de 25 y 37°C con pH de 6,5 a 8,5 no resultaron ser restrictivos para su propagación, por lo que se afirma, que El Carmen cumple con los estándares requeridos, para que el patógeno prolifere de manera óptima.

El cultivo de plátano, es importante por el aporte que genera en la socio-economía y seguridad alimentaria de Ecuador, suministrar alimentos ricos en energía a la mayor parte de la población. Además, se hace necesario realizar manejos de la fertilización que permitan una mejor utilización de este recurso e incrementar los rendimientos. Por ello, se evaluó la fertilización con magnesio en plátano ‘Barraganete’ (Musa AAB), en El Carmen, Manabí, Ecuador. La investigación se condujo en la Granja Experimental ¨Rio Suma¨, Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí, Extensión en El Carmen, ubicada a 260 msnm, temperatura promedio de 24 ºC, precipitación anual de 2.600 mm. Se aplicaron seis niveles de MgO (0, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125 kg·ha-1) para conocer su efecto sobre la morfo-fisiología y el rendimiento de las plantas. Se utilizó un diseño de bloques completamente al azar con seis tratamientos y tres repeticiones; la siembra se realizó con un distanciamiento de 2,50 m x 1,80 m (2.222 plantas·ha-1), evaluadas como medidas repetidas en el tiempo las variables de crecimiento vegetativo. Los resultados demostraron diferencias en todas las variables morfo-fisiológicas lo que demostró que la fertilización con 30% de MgO afectó el crecimiento de las plantas; no obstante, las variables reproductivas no fueron afectadas por las dosis aplicadas; la dosis de 25 kg·ha-1 generaron los mejores rendimientos, eficiencia agronómica y factor parcial de productividad.

In order to increase survival rates of greenhouse seedlings destined for restoration and conservation programs, successful mycorrhization of the seedlings is necessary. To reforest forest ecosystems, host trees must be inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi and, in order to guarantee a sufficient supply of ectomycorrhizal inoculum, it is necessary to develop technologies for the mass production of ectomycorrhizal fungi mycelia. We selected the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria trichodermophora, due to its ecological traits and feasible mycelia production in asymbiotic conditions. Here, we report the field sampling of genetic resources, as well as the highly productive nutritional media and cultivation parameters in solid cultures. Furthermore, in order to achieve high mycelial production, we used strain screening and evaluated pH, carbon source concentration, and culture conditions of submerged cultures in normal and baffled shake flasks. The higher productivity culture conditions in shake flasks were selected for evaluation in a pneumatic bioreactor, using modified BAF media with a 10 g/L glucose, pH 5.5, 25 °C, and a volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (KLa) of 36 h−1. Under those conditions less biomass (12–37 %) was produced in the pneumatic bioreactor compared with the baffled shake flasks. This approach shows that L. trichodermophora can generate a large biomass concentration and constitute the biotechnological foundation of its mycelia mass production.

En el Ecuador, la tendencia de la producción de frutas no tradicionales se incrementa anualmente en un 4%. La fruta milagrosa (Synsepalum dulcificum) se ha convertido en una excelente opción al momento de incursionar en la explotación de frutas no tradicionales para edulcorantes naturales. Sin embargo, esta planta es susceptible a enfermedades como la roya (Hemileia vastatrix) y pestalotiopsis (Pestalotia sp), afectando el área foliar y los frutos, los procesos metabólicos y el desarrollo fotosintético. Por otra parte, el silicio en las plantas evita la infección de patógenos, y en este caso podría utilizarse para el control de la roya. En este estudio se evaluó el manejo de roya y pestalotiopsis en el cultivo de la fruta milagrosa. Se evaluaron los siguientes tratamientos: 1) aplicaciones de silicio al suelo, 2) aplicaciones foliares de silicio, 3) control químico, 4) control biológico, y 5) testigo sin aplicación. Las variables evaluadas fueron: a) incidencia de roya y pestalotiopsis en hojas; b) incidencia de roya y pestalotiopsis en frutos; c) calidad del fruto (porcentaje de frutos sanos y de buena calidad); y d) rendimiento del cultivo. La incidencia de roya y pestalotiopsis en hojas y frutos fue menor en el control químico, y fue el mejor tratamiento para el control de estas enfermedades, con una incidencia menor a 2%. Adicionalmente, hubo una relación directa y positiva entre el control químico y la calidad de la fruta, ya que no existieron frutos dañados en dicho tratamiento, y el rendimiento llego a 202 kg ha-1 año-1 de fruta milagrosa.

Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN. The optimum plant density in Barraganete plantain (Musa paradisiaca (L.) AAB cv. Curare enano) was determined in Los Angeles-Provincia de Los Ríos, Ecuador. Treatments (sowing distance: T1 = 3m x 4m, T2 = 3m x 3m, T3 = 3m x 2m, T4 = 3m x 1.5m and T5 = 3m x 1m), were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with five treatments and three replicates per treatment. The number of hands per cluster, hand weight, weeks to flowering, weeks to harvest, production for export and weed incidence in plantain crop, were evaluated. Variance analysis was performed and means were submitted to the Tukey test at 5% probability (p = 0.05). The optimum sowing distance was 2m between plants and 3m between rows. The best density was 1666 plants. ha-1 and obtained the best average hand weight (14.5 kg), the best average number of hands (4.9), the best average in weeks to harvest after flowering (12.1 Weeks) and the best production (kg.ha-1) of export bunches (close to 22 t.ha-1). Analysis with logistic models show the higher densities, which present advantages in their use, fact related to the increase of the annual plantain production. For this reason, values between 2150 and 2500 plants.ha-1 are postulated as optimal densities. Cuéllar Serrano Gómez (CSG) is a Colombian architectural, engineering, and construction firm, which was founded in 1933 in Bogotá by the engineer José Gómez Pinzón, the engineer-architect Gabriel Serrano Camargo, and the architect Camilo Cuéllar Tamayo. Pinzon trained at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, and Cuéllar at the London Architectural Association. In the 1940s the architect Gabriel Largacha Manrique (who had also trained at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia) joined the staff. CSG played a leading role in the modernization of Bogotá—the Colombian capital—and of the country in general. The firm’s extensive work includes projects carried out all over the country, which are as much architectural as engineering in scope. It led the way in introducing technological developments in local construction, either by importing modern technology, or by implementing new technologies tinged with local design, so that by the mid-20th century CSG was known as one of the most cutting-edge firms in Latin America.

Two chromate-resistant filamentous fungi, strains H13 and Ed8, were selected from seven independent fungal isolates indigenous to Cr(VI)-contaminated soil because of their ability to decrease hexavalent chromium levels in the growth medium. Morphophysiological studies identified strain H13 as a Penicillium sp. isolate and Ed8 as an Aspergillus sp. isolate. When incubated in minimal medium with glucose as a carbon source and in the presence of 50 µg/mL Cr(VI), these strains caused complete disappearance of Cr(VI) in the growth medium after about 72 h of incubation. Total chromium concentration in growth medium was constant during culture growth, and no accumulation of chromium in fungal biomass was observed. Quantitative determinations of oxidized and reduced chromium species during the reduction process revealed stoichiometric conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). A decrease in Cr(VI) levels from industrial wastes was also induced by Ed8 or H13 biomass. These results indicate that chromate-resistant filamentous fungi with Cr(VI)-reducing capability could be useful for the removal of Cr(VI) contamination.Key words: Cr(VI) reduction, Cr(VI) resistance, filamentous fungi, Aspergillus sp., Penicillium sp., industrial wastes.

For sustainable forest management, it is important to know the response of timber species to the change in environment caused by logging. We performed a 2-year study on germination, survival and growth of four timber species, Cedrela odorata, Swietenia macrophylla, Hymenaea courbaril, and Cariniana micrantha, and one non-commercial species Tachigali vasquezii. We sowed seeds of these species in five microenvironments: log landing, gap-crown and gap-trunk, skidder trail and understory, in a tropical lowland moist rain forest in northern Bolivia. We related seed and seedling performance to light availability, soil compaction, and plant competition. Germination did not differ significantly between microenvironments but survival of germinated seeds for most species was significantly higher (P

Poroleprieuria gen. nov. is described and illustrated to accommodate P. rogersii in the Xylariaceae, Xylariales. This ascomycete, known only from the type collection, is characterized by reniform, light brown, smooth ascospores with a germ pore; cylindrical, persistent asci lacking an apical apparatus, septate persistent paraphyses, and erumpent, erect, dark brown, fragile, subcylindrical stromata. The characteristics of this xylariaceous fungus were compared with those of some other ascomycetes having superficially similar cylindrical stromata or ascospores with germ pores.

Reinvestigation of the fermentation broth and mycelium of the coprophilous fungus Guanomyces polythrix, grown in static conditions, led to the isolation of several phytotoxic compounds, including two new naphthopyranone derivatives, namely (2S, 3R)-5-hydroxy-6,8-dimethoxy-2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-naphtho[2,3-b]-pyran-4-one and (2S, 3R)-5-hydroxy-6,8,10-trimethoxy-2,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-4H-naphtho[2,3-b]-pyran-4-one. The structures of the new compounds were established by spectral and chiroptical methods. In addition, the structure of 8-hydroxy-6-methyl-9-oxo-9H-xanthene-1-carboxylic acid methyl ester was unambiguously determined by X-ray analysis. The isolates caused significant inhibition of radicle growth of two weed seedlings (Amaranthus hypochondriacus and Echinochloa crusgalli) and interacted with both spinach and bovine brain calmodulins.

Wild killer yeasts have been identified as inhibitory to strains used as starters in the production of alcoholic beverages such as beer and wine; therefore, killer or killer-resistant strains have been sought for use in alcoholic fermentations. In the current paper a total of 16 strains belonging to six species were isolated. From two samples of Agave sap (aguamiel) the following yeast strains were isolated: Candida lusitaneae (1), Kluyveromyces marxianus var. bulgaricus (2), and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (capensis) (1). Additionally, in seven samples of pulque (the fermented product), the species C. valida (six strains), S. cerevisiae (chevalieri) (4), S. cerevisiae (capensis) (1), and K. marxianus var. lactis (1) were found. The killer strains were C. valida and K. marxianus var. lactis from pulque and K. marxianus var. bulgaricus from aguamiel. One strain of S. cerevisiae (chevalieri) isolated from pulque which did not show killer activity was, on the other hand, resistant to other killer strains and it had a remarkable ethanol tolerance, suggesting that this strain could be used for alcohol production.

Pozol is a beverage prepared from fermented nixtamal consumed in Southeastern Mexico. The Mestizos have modified the traditional Indian procedure by adding an extra cooking step to reduce the amount of solid sediment present in the beverage when the dough is suspended in water. To elucidate whether this additional step influences the microbiology of the fermentation, the microbiota before fermentation of Indian and Mestizo nixtamal doughs, and the microbial growth during both processes were assessed. The initial microbiotas of freshly made nixtamal doughs purchased on nine successive days from one Indian producer and one Mestizo producer were examined. The numbers of micro-organisms in the initial doughs were quite constant day by day and were similar in the Indian and Mestizo products. Initial microbial concentrations (cfu g −1 ) were: lactic acid bacteria, 10 5 –10 6 ; non-lactic aerobic mesophilic bacteria, 10 4 –10 6 , enterobacteria, 10 3 –10 4 ; mould propagules, 10 2 –10 3 and yeasts, 10 4 . In the products fermented at 28°C for 48 h the concentrations of lactic acid bacteria and non-lactic aerobic mesophilic bacteria were 10 9 and 10 5 cfu g −1 respectively. No differences were found in the initial microbiotas nor in the fermentation patterns of both kinds of doughs. The concentrations of bacteria were similar on the surface and in the interior of the balls, but those of moulds and yeasts were higher on the surface than in the interior. In spite of the low pH values attained (4·5 or below), viable enterobacteria were still present at the end of the fermentation.
