Abstract

We investigate the spin dynamics of the cuprate ladder Sr$_{2.5}$Ca$_{11.5}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ to elucidate the behavior of its intrinsically doped holes. Combining high-resolution neutron spectroscopy and density matrix renormalization group calculations enables a comprehensive analysis of the collective magnetic dynamics. We find a general absence of magnetic signatures from unpaired charges, indicating holes within the system form strongly bound localized Cooper pairs. A one-band Hubbard model fails to match the spectral features but a straightforward extension to a large attractive nearest-neighbor interaction quantitatively explains our results. Our finding shows the significance of additional interactions beyond the long-predicted quantum spin pairing in the ($d$-wave) charge pairing process. Abstract

We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract

The correlation between static magnetoelectric coupling and magnetic structure was investigated in $TbMn_{0.98}Fe_{0.02}O_{3}$ with magnetic field up to 8 T and down to 2 K. Single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments reveal a substantial increase in the temperature dependence of the incommensurate modulation wave vector of the antiferromagnetic phase as the magnetic field strength increases. Magnetic field-dependent pyroelectric current measurements revealed significantly higher magnetoelectric coupling at magnetic fields below 4 T than in pure TbMnO3. This is due to the higher sensitivity of the incommensurably modulated cycloid structure to weak magnetic fields. Detailed analysis of our data confirmed that the ferroelectric polarization is induced by inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction for magnetic field strength up to 4 T, but at higher fields a departure from theoretical predictions is ascertained, giving evidence for an additional, as yet misunderstood, contribution to magnetoelectric coupling. It shows that a small 2% substitution of Mn3+ by Fe3+ has a strong impact on the magnetic structure, promoting the destabilization of the incommensurably modulated magnetic cycloidal structure of $TbMnO_{3}$ in a magnetic field above 5 T. We demonstrate that the magnetoelectric coupling magnitude can be tuned through suitable substitutional elements, even at low level, inducing local lattice distortions with different electronic and magnetic properties., Comment: V2: AAM, Licence: CC BY

BACKGROUND: Mental health disorders are linked to prolonged concussion symptoms. However, the association of premorbid anxiety/depression symptoms with postconcussion return-to-play timelines and total symptom burden is unclear. One of the most popular topics is education, and this study will also focus on this area. In this research, we will examine examples of social innovation in education and the impact of these practices, with a particular focus on social sustainability. Our aim is to present social innovation programmes and good practices in the national and international field that can be identified as educationally equitable solutions and can be adapted and sustained to enhance well-being, taking into account local needs and demands and the specificities of the community. Within the framework of this study, the good practices examined are presented in a structured way, emphasizing key elements that ensure social sustainability. The study also seeks to answer the question of how the social innovation-based education programmes examined support the process of social sustainability and how these programmes can help to sustain core values. Abstract

We report a comprehensive study of the low-level substitution of Mn$^{3+}$ by Fe$^{3+}$ effect on the static and dynamic magnetoelectric coupling in TbMn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$O$_3$ ($x=0$, 0.02 and 0.04). The cationic substitution has a large impact on the balance between competitive magnetic interactions and, as a result, on the stabilization of the magnetic structures and ferroelectric phase at low temperatures. Low-lying electromagnon excitation is activated in the cycloidal modulated antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase in TbMnO$_3$, while it is observed up to TN in the Fe-substituted compounds, pointing for different mechanisms for static and dynamic magnetoelectric coupling. A second electrically active excitation near 40 cm$^{-1}$ is explained by means of Tb3+ crystal-field effects. This excitation is observed up to room temperature, and exhibits a remarkable 15 cm$^{-1}$ downshift on cooling in Fe-substituted compounds. Both electromagnon and crystal-field excitations are found to be coupled to the polar phonons with frequencies up to 250 cm$^{-1}$. Raman spectroscopy reveals a spin-phonon coupling below TN in pure TbMnO$_3$, but the temperature where the coupling start to be relevant increases with Fe concentration and reaches 100 K in TbMn$_{0.96}$Fe$_{0.04}$O$_3$. The anomalies in the T-dependence of magnetic susceptibility above TN are well accounted by spin-phonon coupling and crystal-field excitation, coupled to oxygen motions.

13. Splittings of One-Ended Groups with One-Ended Halfspaces

Abstract

We introduce the notion of halfspaces associated to a group splitting, and investigate the relationship between the coarse geometry of the halfspaces and the coarse geometry of the group. Roughly speaking, the halfspaces of a group splitting are subgraphs of the Cayley graph obtained by pulling back the halfspaces of the Bass--Serre tree. Our first theorem shows that (under mild conditions) any splitting of a one-ended group can be upgraded to a splitting where all the halfspaces are one-ended. Our second theorem demonstrates that a one-ended group usually has a JSJ splitting where all the halfspaces are one-ended. Abstract

PHENIX presents a simultaneous measurement of the production of direct $\gamma$ and $\pi^0$ in $d$$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV over a $p_T$ range of 7.5 to 18 GeV/$c$ for different event samples selected by event activity, i.e. charged-particle multiplicity detected at forward rapidity. Direct-photon yields are used to empirically estimate the contribution of hard-scattering processes in the different event samples. Using this estimate, the average nuclear-modification factor $R_{d\rm Au,EXP}^{\gamma^{\rm dir}}$ is $0.925{\pm}0.023({\rm stat}){\pm}0.15^{\rm (scale)}$, consistent with unity for minimum-bias (MB) $d$$+$Au events. For event classes with moderate event activity, $R_{d\rm Au,EXP}^{\gamma^{\rm dir}}$ is consistent with the MB value within 5\% uncertainty. These results confirm that the previously observed enhancement of high-$p_T$ $\pi^0$ production found in small-system collisions with low event activity is a result of a bias in interpreting event activity within the Glauber framework. Abstract

We present an algorithm that combines quantum scattering calculations with probabilistic machine-learning models to predict quantum dynamics rate coefficients for a large number of state-to-state transitions in molecule–molecule collisions much faster than with direct solutions of the Schrödinger equation. By utilizing the predictive power of Gaussian process regression with kernels, optimized to make accurate predictions outside of the input parameter space, the present strategy reduces the computational cost by about 75%, with an accuracy within 5%. Our method uses temperature dependences of rate coefficients for transitions from the isolated states of initial rotational angular momentum j, determined via explicit calculations, to predict the temperature dependences of rate coefficients for other values of j. The approach, demonstrated here for rovibrational transitions of SiO due to thermal collisions with H2, uses different prediction models and is thus adaptive to various time and accuracy requirements. The procedure outlined in this work can be used to extend multiple inelastic molecular collision databases without exponentially large computational resources required for conventional rigorous quantum dynamics calculations. Abstract

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To study longitudinal associations between blood-based neural biomarkers (including total tau, neurofilament light [NfL], glial fibrillary acidic protein [GFAP], and ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase-L1) and white matter neuroimaging biomarkers in collegiate athletes with sport-related concussion (SRC) from 24 hours postinjury to 1 week after return to play. METHODS: We analyzed clinical and imaging data of concussed collegiate athletes in the Concussion Assessment, Research, and Education (CARE) Consortium. The CARE participants completed same-day clinical assessments, blood draws, and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) at 3 time points: 24-48 hours postinjury, point of becoming asymptomatic, and 7 days after return to play. DTI probabilistic tractography was performed for each participant at each time point to render 27 participant-specific major white matter tracts. The microstructural organization of these tracts was characterized by 4 DTI metrics. Mixed-effects models with random intercepts were applied to test whether white matter microstructural abnormalities are associated with the blood-based biomarkers at the same time point. An interaction model was used to test whether the association varies across time points. A lagged model was used to test whether early blood-based biomarkers predict later microstructural changes. RESULTS: Data from 77 collegiate athletes were included in the following analyses. Among the 4 blood-based biomarkers, total tau had significant associations with the DTI metrics across the 3 time points. In particular, high tau level was associated with high radial diffusivity (RD) in the right corticospinal tract (β = 0.25, SE = 0.07, p FDR-adjusted = 0.016) and superior thalamic radiation (β = 0.21, SE = 0.07, p FDR-adjusted = 0.042). Abstract

Semistability at infinity is an asymptotic property of finitely presented groups that is needed in order to effectively define the fundamental group at infinity for a 1-ended group. It is an open problem whether or not all finitely presented groups have semistable fundamental group at infinity. While many classes of groups are known to contain only semistable at infinity groups, there are only a few combination results for such groups. Our main theorem is such a result. Main Theorem. Suppose $G$ is the fundamental group of a connected reduced graph of groups, where each edge group is infinite and finitely generated, and each vertex group is finitely presented and either 1-ended and semistable at infinity or has an edge group of finite index. Then $G$ is 1-ended and semistable at infinity. An important part of the proof of this result is the semistability part of the following: Theorem. Suppose $H_0$ is an infinite finitely presented group, $H_1$ is a subgroup of finite index in $H_0$, $\phi:H_1\to H_0$ is a monomorphism and $G=H_0\ast_\phi$ is the resulting HNN extension. Abstract

Sport-related concussion (SRC) is an important public health issue. White-matter alterations after SRC are widely studied by neuroimaging approaches, such as diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although the exact anatomical location of the alterations may differ, significant white-matter alterations are commonly observed in long fiber tracts, but are never proven. In the present study, we performed streamline tractography to characterize the association between tract length and white-matter microstructural alterations after SRC. Sixty-eight collegiate athletes diagnosed with acute concussion (24-48 h post-injury) and 64 matched contact-sport controls were included in this study. The athletes underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in 3.0 T MRI scanners across three study sites. DTI metrics were used for tract-based spatial statistics to map white-matter regions-of-interest (ROIs) with significant group differences. Whole-brain white-mater streamline tractography was performed to extract affected white-matter streamlines (i.e., streamlines passing through the identified ROIs). In the concussed athletes, streamline counts and DTI metrics of the affected white-matter fiber tracts were summarized and compared with unaffected white-matter tracts across tract length in the same participant. The affected white-matter tracts had a high streamline count at length of 80-100 mm and high length-adjusted affected ratio for streamline length longer than 80 mm. DTI mean diffusivity was higher in the affected streamlines longer than 100 mm with significant associations with the Brief Symptom Inventory score. Our findings suggest that long fibers in the brains of collegiate athletes are more vulnerable to acute SRC with higher mean diffusivity and a higher affected ratio compared with the whole distribution.

Abstract

Sport-related concussions can result from a single high magnitude impact that generates concussive symptoms, repeated subconcussive head impacts aggregating to generate concussive symptoms, or a combined effect from the two mechanisms. The array of symptoms produced by these mechanisms may be clinically interpreted as a sport-related concussion. It was hypothesized that head impact exposure resulting in concussion is influenced by severity, total number, and frequency of subconcussive head impacts. The influence of total number and magnitude of impacts was previously explored, but frequency was investigated to a lesser degree. In this analysis, head impact frequency was investigated over a new metric called 'time delta', the time difference from the first recorded head impact of the day until the concussive impact. Four exposure metrics were analyzed over the time delta to determine whether frequency of head impact exposure was greater for athletes on their concussion date relative to other dates of contact participation. Those metrics included head impact frequency, head impact accrual rate, risk weighted exposure (RWE), and RWE accrual rate. Athletes experienced an elevated median number of impacts, RWE, and RWE accrual rate over the time delta on their concussion date compared to non-injury sessions. This finding suggests elevated frequency of head impact exposure on the concussion date compared to other dates that may precipitate the onset of concussion.

Abstract

Recently, the PHENIX Collaboration has published second- and third-harmonic Fourier coefficients $v_2$ and $v_3$ for midrapidity ($|\eta|<0.35$) charged hadrons in 0\%--5\% central $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV utilizing three sets of two-particle correlations for two detector combinations with different pseudorapidity acceptance [Phys. Rev. C {\bf 105}, 024901 (2022)]. This paper extends these measurements of $v_2$ to all centralities in $p$$+$Au, $d$$+$Au, and $^3$He$+$Au collisions, as well as $p$$+$$p$ collisions, as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) and event multiplicity. The kinematic dependence of $v_2$ is quantified as the ratio $R$ of $v_2$ between the two detector combinations as a function of event multiplicity for $0.5$$<$$p_T$$<$$1$ and $2$$<$$p_T$$<$$2.5$ GeV/$c$. A multiphase-transport (AMPT) model can reproduce the observed $v_2$ in most-central to midcentral $d$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions. However, the AMPT model systematically overestimates the measurements in $p$$+$$p$, $p$$+$Au, and peripheral $d$$+$Au and $^3$He$+$Au collisions, indicating a higher nonflow contribution in AMPT than in the experimental data. Abstract

There is strong evidence for the formation of small droplets of quark-gluon plasma in $p/d/^{3}$He+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and in $p$+$p$/Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. In particular, the analysis of data at RHIC for different geometries obtained by varying the projectile size and shape has proven insightful. In the present analysis, we find excellent agreement with the previously published PHENIX at RHIC results on elliptical and triangular flow with an independent analysis via the two-particle correlation method, which has quite different systematic uncertainties and an independent code base. In addition, the results are extended to other detector combinations with different kinematic (pseudorapidity) coverage. Abstract

Teachers play an important role in facilitating a student's return to school after a concussion. Currently, there is limited evidence on teachers' experiences and their role in managing concussions in the classroom. This study investigated teachers' perceived knowledge and confidence regarding concussion recognition and management. A cross-sectional design was used for this online survey of secondary school teachers in the United States. Practicing teachers self-reported being moderately knowledgeable and confident in their knowledge of concussion signs and symptoms. Whereas teachers were moderately knowledgeable and confident in their knowledge of academic support strategies after a student's concussion, teachers were minimally knowledgeable and confident in their knowledge of the criteria for the student's return to school and activity. Personal history of concussion and participation in formal concussion education were associated with increases in teachers' perceived knowledge and confidence regarding concussion and its management process. Overall, teachers believed it was important to learn about concussions to support a student's return to school. Therefore, integration of concussion education into preservice teacher education programs and in-service trainings is recommended. Providing teachers with practical resources on academic adjustments can enhance the support provided to symptomatic students, reduce misconceptions about concussion, and facilitate dialogue among stakeholders involved in the management of concussions.

Abstract

Context: Mindfulness interventions (yoga, meditation) in traumatic brain injury populations show promising improvements in injury outcomes. However, most studies include all injury severities and use in-person, general programming lacking accessibility and specificity to the nuance of concussion. Therefore, this study investigated the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of an online, concussion-focused meditation intervention among young adults with a concussion history. Design: Unblinded, single-arm, pilot intervention. Methods: Fifteen young adults aged 18 to 30 with a concussion history within the past 5 years completed 10 to 20 minutes per day of online, guided meditations for 6 weeks. Feasibility was assessed using the Feasibility of Intervention Measure. Concussion symptoms were measured using the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptom Questionnaire, perceived stress the Perceived Stress Scale-10, and mindfulness the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics described the study sample and determined intervention adherence and feasibility. Paired sample t tests were used to examine preintervention/postintervention changes in concussion symptoms, perceived stress, and mindfulness, with descriptive statistics further detailing significant t tests. Results: Fifteen participants were enrolled, and 12 completed the intervention. The majority completed 5+ days per week of the meditations, and Feasibility of Intervention Measure (17.4 [1.8]) scores indicated high feasibility. Concussion symptom severity significantly decreased after completing the meditation intervention (11.3 [10.3]) compared with before the intervention (24.5 [17.2]; t[11] = 3.0, P =.01). The number of concussion symptoms reported as worse than before their concussion significantly decreased after completing the meditation intervention (2.7 [3.9]) compared with before the intervention (8.0 [5.7]; t[11] = 3.7, P =.004). Postintervention, 83.33% (n = 10) reported lower concussion symptom severity, and 75.00% (n = 9) reported less concussion symptoms as a mild, moderate, or severe problem (ie, worse than before injury). Conclusions: Findings suggest positive adherence and feasibility of the meditation intervention, with the majority reporting concussion symptom improvement postintervention. Abstract

Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) and its regularised versions have been widely used in the neuroimaging community to uncover multivariate associations between two data modalities (e.g., brain imaging and behaviour). However, these methods have inherent limitations: (1) statistical inferences about the associations are often not robust; (2) the associations within each data modality are not modelled; (3) missing values need to be imputed or removed. Group Factor Analysis (GFA) is a hierarchical model that addresses the first two limitations by providing Bayesian inference and modelling modality-specific associations. Here, we propose an extension of GFA that handles missing data, and highlight that GFA can be used as a predictive model. We applied GFA to synthetic and real data consisting of brain connectivity and non-imaging measures from the Human Connectome Project (HCP). In synthetic data, GFA uncovered the underlying shared and specific factors and predicted correctly the non-observed data modalities in complete and incomplete data sets. In the HCP data, we identified four relevant shared factors, capturing associations between mood, alcohol and drug use, cognition, demographics and psychopathological measures and the default mode, frontoparietal control, dorsal and ventral networks and insula, as well as two factors describing associations within brain connectivity. In addition, GFA predicted a set of non-imaging measures from brain connectivity. These findings were consistent in complete and incomplete data sets, and replicated previous findings in the literature. Suppose $G$ is a finitely presented group that is hyperbolic relative to ${\bf P}$ a finite collection of 1-ended finitely generated proper subgroups of $G$. If $G$ and the ${\bf P}$ are 1-ended and the boundary $\partial (G,{\bf P})$ has no cut point, then $G$ was known to have semistable fundamental group at $\infty$. We consider the more general situation when $\partial (G,{\bf P})$ contains cut points. Abstract

We report electron tunneling spectroscopy studies on single crystalline FeSi sample performed for the case of homogeneous tunnel junction contacts and for the case of counter electrodes made from Pt-Rh alloy. Our results reveal that while the tunneling spectroscopy in the configuration with Pt-Rh tip is preferably sensitive to the d-partial density of states and to the indirect energy gap, the FeSi-FeSi type of tunnel junction yields spectroscopic information on the c-partial density of states and on the direct gap in FeSi.

Abstract

A {\it graph product} $G$ on a graph $\Gamma$ is a group defined as follows: For each vertex $v$ of $\Gamma$ there is a corresponding non-trivial group $G_v$. The group $G$ is the quotient of the free product of the $G_v$ by the commutation relations $[G_v,G_w]=1$ for all adjacent $v$ and $w$ in $\Gamma$. A finitely presented group $G$ has {\it semistable fundamental group at $\infty$} if for some (equivalently any) finite connected CW-complex $X$ with $\pi_1(X)=G$, the universal cover $\tilde X$ of $X$ has the property that any two proper rays in $\tilde X$ are properly homotopic. The class of finitely presented groups with semistable fundamental group at $\infty$ is known to contain many other classes of groups, but it is a 40 year old question as to whether or not all finitely presented groups have semistable fundamental group at $\infty$. Our main theorem is a combination result. It states that if $G$ is a graph product on a finite graph $\Gamma$ and each vertex group is finitely presented, then $G$ has non-semistable fundamental group at $\infty$ if and only if there is a vertex $v$ of $\Gamma$ such that $G_v$ is not semistable, and the subgroup of $G$ generated by the vertex groups of vertices adjacent to $v$ is finite (equivalently $lk(v)$ is a complete graph and each vertex group of $lk(v)$ is finite). Hence if one knows which vertex groups of $G$ are not semistable and which are finite, then an elementary inspection of $\Gamma$ determines whether or not $G$ has semistable fundamental group at $\infty$., Comment: 16 pages, no figures
