Dogs engage in social interactions with robots, yet whether they perceive them as social agents remains uncertain. In jealousy-evoking contexts, specific behaviours were observed exclusively when dogs' owners interacted with social, rather than non-social rivals. Here, we investigated whether a robot elicits jealous behaviour in dogs based on its level of animateness. First, dogs observed a robot either moving mechanistically, or showing animate motions in a non-interactive, or interactive manner towards a human. Then, in consecutive trials the owner interacted with a rival dog, the robot, and read a magazine, while ignoring the subject. Dogs displayed more owner-oriented behaviours, interaction interruption, vocalization and snapping when the owner attended the rival dog compared to reading. Dogs showed intermediate interest toward the robot but snapped more toward the robot than the magazine. Thus, dogs adjust their jealous behaviour to the actual rival, and indirect, brief experience is sufficient to consider the robot as distinct from typical inanimate objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Navigation skills are essential for most social and service robotics applications. The robots that are currently in practical use in various complex human environments are generally very limited in their autonomous navigational abilities; while they can reach the proximity of objects, they are not efficient in approaching them closely. The new solution described in this paper presents a system to solve this context-specific navigation problem. The system handles locations with differing contexts based on the use of LiDAR and URF sensors, allowing for the avoidance of people and obstacles with a wide margin, as well as for approaching target objects closely. To quantify the efficiency of our solution we compared it with the ROS contextless standard navigation (move_base) in two different robot platforms and environments, both with real-world tests and simulations. The metrics selected were (1) the time the robot needs to reach an object, (2) the Euclidean distance, and (3) the orientation between the final position of the robot and the defined goal position. Over the past two decades, farm animal-assisted therapies have become popular. However, the effects of farm animals on healthy people's mental states have not yet been investigated. In Study 1, we aimed to explore whether positive effects of human-animal interaction (HAI) can be detected in healthy farm volunteers even after short-term (2–3 hours) work with goats and goatlings on a goat farm. We found that the participants' state anxiety decreased (p < 0.001) while their trust levels increased (p < 0.001) after interacting with goats. Nevertheless, it is possible that time spent in nature alone can have a beneficial effect on well-being. Therefore, in Study 2, we compared the results of Study 1 with those of a similar short-term outdoor treatment, walking in a botanical garden as a visitor. Similar but smaller effects were found for garden visitors. Decreases in anxiety scores and increases in trust scores were more pronounced in farm volunteers (anxiety: 25% vs 13%, p < 0.001; trust: 13% vs 3%, p = 0.002) after the treatments. Overall, the results suggest that the novel experience of interacting with goats and goatlings has a more positive effect on the mental state of healthy humans than walking in a botanical garden. This finding offer a strong foundation for developing animal assisted therapy methods for individuals with short or long term mental problems, but they can also enhance the wellbeing of mentally healthy people.
