Data management plans (DMPs) and research data repositories are essential parts of modern research. At TU Wien and TU Graz we have built up institutional research data repositories and online tools for managing DMPs. Both of these systems can help our researchers with different parts of their research data's life-cycles. However, without communication between these services, some information has to be entered multiple times across these systems which can lead to frustration and errors. We aim to improve this user experience pain point by creating a channel for sharing information between these systems. By utilizing the RDA DMP Common Standard for machine-actionable DMPs for the communication, we want to extract a general communication protocol out of the prototypes that can be implemented for other research data repositories and DMP tools as well.

RO-Crates can aggregate and describe any resource including files, URI-addressable resources, or use other addressing schemes to locate digital or physical data. This provides a simple way to, for example, assert the authors (e.g. people, organizations) of the RO-Crate or one its files, or to capture more complex provenance for files, such as how they were created using software and equipment. While providing the formal specification for RO-Crate, this document also aims to be a practical guide for software authors to create tools for generating and consuming research data packages, with explanation by examples.

The RDA Europe Workshop "From Planning to Action. Towards the Establishment of an Austrian Research Infrastructure" was organized in Vienna in November 2017 with the support of RDA Europe, the Vienna University of Technology, and the University of Vienna. The workshop was the first RDA national event in Austria in a series of RDA Europe events dedicated to practical issues surrounding the adoption of RDA recommendations, the implementation of European Open Science Cloud and other key European data initiatives in order to support EU researchers and data centres. The different sections focused on transversal and domain-specific projects and infrastructures in Austria, such as data centres and data repositories that have emerged as a result of initiatives developed at the national level. The presentations also reflected the European perspective on research data management, focusing on the political and scientific work of international organisations. Furthermore there was an analysis of various RDA Europe working group recommendations and their potential for adoption in local contexts. The event also included the announcement of a new dedicated RDA group for Austria. This node will formally represent the Austrian data management community within the new RDA administrative structure as soon as formal procedures are completed.

The paper presents an integration of InvenioRDM-based data repository with DAMAP-based tool for data management plans. We use machine-actionable data management plans to orchestrate the integration and to automate the process of DMP creation. The larger goal is to establish a common interface for communication between DMP tools and data repositories.

Sumbitted draft not yet approved by the EC This deliverable is the initial Data Management Plan (DMP) for the Skills4EOSC project, delivered in M4. It will be kept updated as a living document. The DMP addresses the relevant aspects of the management of data and other outputs produced by the project according to the principles outlined in the Embedding Open Science in the Skills4EOSC Methodology section.

Topic of the 3rd VRT: Intellectual property/data usage agreement, ownership of data and discoverability, visibility and re-use of project outcomes. The aim was to raise awareness and promote an environment that would encourage the discussion and production of a Results Ownership List - ROL and address ethical, legal and intellectual property aspects. Discussed topics: Definition of the ROL Data aspects in the Digital Technopole FAIR for Industry Guided discussion with focus on discoverability, visibility and re-use of project outcomes (FAIRification); intellectual property/data usage agreement; ownership of data/services; user concept and ROL Project context A series of four Interactive Virtual Roundtables (VRTs) was organised within the CO-VERSATILE project. A VRT is an activity and space developed to raise awareness, foster knowledge transfer, generate conceptual alignment, and initiate the adoption of corrective measures whenever there is a demand or a need. 1st VRT: Legal and Ethical issues 2nd VRT: Gender and Intersectionality – Theories, tools and benefits within the context of the Co-Versatile project. 3rd VRT: Intellectual Property – Data usage agreement, ownership of data and discoverability, visibility and re-use of project outcomes 4th VRT: About Results Ownership List (ROL) Furthermore, the VRTs also opened space for: Indication of relevant/supportive documents (i.e. GEAR – Gender Equality in Academia and Research) Collection of partners' testimonials presented in the 1st VRT (i.e. WP2 – Build, Measure and Learn and WP5 - Communication & dissemination activities) Conducting internal surveys (to monitor and collect data) Development of auxiliary documents for the consortium members' use, such as dossiers, templates and deliverables.

However, there is no common definition of what machine-actionable DMPs really are. This hinders the com- munication between stakeholders and leads to scepticism, or conversely to exaggerated expectations. This paper aims to clarify what machine-actionable DMPs are and provides examples of how involved stakeholders can benefit from them. It describes an open stakeholder con- sultation performed by the RDA DMP Common Standards working group. The main objective was to define the scope of information covered by machine-actionable DMPs and formulate an initial set of requirements for a common data model for machine actionable DMPs. To do this we used methodology known from system and software requirements engineering to collect information on how needs for infor- mation of particular stakeholders evolve over phases of the research data lifecycle. Materials (presentations and video) from the online webinar FAIR for Sensitive Data, organized by the FAIR Office Austria on March 23, 2021.The goal of the webinar was to inform researchers on technical and legal aspects and hands-on practices when working with sensitive data. The workshop introduced tools that can be used for data anonymization, privacy-preserving processing, generation of synthetic data, etc. It included demos of selected tools for privacy-preserving data mining/analysis. Furthermore, the participants learnt about the WellFort platform that integrates these tools and provides novel means for consent management.

Slides of a talk in the webinar "Repositories for Research Data (InvenioRDM)" on the topic "Repository of the TU Wien" that took place on November 18, 2021, 10:00 to 11:30, online, as part of the event series "Research Data Management in Austria". InvenioRDM is a turn-key RDM repository platform based on Invenio Framework and Zenodo. It provides a wide range of features that ensure good research data practice and the implementation of the FAIR principles. Data stored in the repository is given a permanent address (D.O.I., digital object identifier), which makes it easier to find and access and increases its citability. Description: InvenioRDM is a dynamic open source project with a worldwide community coordinated by CERN. In this webinar you will receive information on the latest developments and future plans from the project management at CERN. Software developers, technical leads and repository managers from TU Graz, TU Vienna and University of Innsbruck report on the rollout at Austrian universities and provide practical experience with InvenioRDM.

Data Management Plans (DMPs) and Data Availability Statements (DAS) provide context on activities and outcomes in Research Data Management Lifecycles (RDMLs) and encompass different aspects of the scholarly communication process. On the one hand, DMPs ensure researchers’ compliance with research funding and research organizations’ requirements, to carefully manage and appropriately share research data and outputs. On the other hand, DAS are integrated into scientific publishers' workflows to promote the availability of their publications’ underlying research data and outputs. Efforts are underway to standardize the structure and content of DMPs and DAS at both technical and policy levels. In this session you will hear from four key stakeholder groups regarding their approaches towards addressing challenges and opportunities in DMPs and DAS: Dutch Research Council (NWO) - Champions research data management policy alignment with research funders in Europe. One of the first organizations to implement Science Europe core requirements for DMPs, NWO actively promotes these requirements to other stakeholders. American Geophysical Union (AGU) - Advances data/software sharing policies and approaches in publishing through a broad coalition of partners and stakeholders. Beginning with its position statement on data (1997), AGU continues to improve its guidance and move towards machine-actionable DAS and research articles. Research Data Alliance (RDA) DMP Common Standards Working Group (WG) – Develops a community-wide information model, as well as specifications and access mechanisms for machine-actionable DMPs (maDMPs). The WG recently released its maDMP recommendations for fostering greater collaboration, integration, and automation of maDMPs across research workflows. Argos - An open extensible service through OpenAire that simplifies the management, validation, monitoring and maintenance of DMPs. Argos constructs DMPs as machine-actionable outputs that are also shared through Zenodo according to Open and FAIR practices. Furthermore, the Argos paradigm inspires discussions and solutions towards the automation, linking, and machine-actionability of DAS and DMPs.

Machine-actionable data management plans (maDMPs) have, by their very nature, potential to bring advantages over data management plans that are written in text form. By employing maDMPs, not only researchers should be able to benefit from their merits, but also research funders receiving and assessing the DMPs. Science Europe, which is an association of major European research funders, have published an evaluation rubric that provides a common basis to support the evaluation of DMPs. By stating a set of criteria, it helps to ensure submitted DMPs cover required aspects and support FAIR data management. In this paper, we present a semi-automatic approach to leverage the benefits of maDMPs by providing SPARQL queries that represent requirements of Science Europe. The goal is to support reviewers in the assessment of DMPs expressed as maDMPs. The results show that semantic web technologies can help in providing customised views to reviewers, but human inspection and interpretation is still needed.

These principles form the basis of a trusted environment where researchers, innovators, companies, and citizens can publish, find, and re-use each other’s data and tools for research, innovation, and educational purposes. The FAIR principles refer to any digital object evolving from the research process, that is, quantitative as well as qualitative data, metadata or algorithms, tools, software and services. Presenter Tomasz Miksa is a researcher at the Institute for Information Systems Engineering and a staff member at the Center for Research Data Management at TU Wien. He supervises the development of RDM infrastructures at TU Wien and is active in various national and international RDM networks (RDA, COAR, etc.).

Research Object Crates package research data with its metadata. Machine-actionable Data Management Plans describe what happens to data over the research lifecycle. To automate data management tasks and to lessen the burden on researchers, we investigated how information can be exchanged between them. In this paper we present a mapping and evaluate it on a set of existing machine-actionable Data Management Plans and Research Object Crates. Results show that a significant part of information can be exchanged and thus automation of data management tasks is possible.

Research outputs produced by developing countries lack visibility. Common reasons are high costs of publishing, reluctance to share, as well as lack of journals focusing on research challenges specific to developing countries. The ongoing change towards open access and the rising popularity of institutional repositories allows for bridging the gap to developed countries. However, this still requires cultural, organizational and technical changes. In this paper, we describe a holistic approach for deploying open access repositories and building research data management services and increasing data curation skills. We describe how we identified users’ needs and necessary supporting systems and services. We also explain the rationale and challenges faced when implementing popular repository systems and share experiences in developing institutional data management policies. Finally, we provide common goals for a national roadmap. All these actions are the first step towards the preservation of both research outputs and cultural assets. The paper is based on our experiences from ROMOR project that helped in establishing policies, systems, and organizational workflows at four Palestinian universities.

The existing digital ecosystem surrounding scholarly data publication is not yet addressing all requirements of life sciences. Although for certain types of digital objects there are already well established repositories, a considerable part of the research data from life science never become accessible to the open world due to a lack of appropriate tools for their continuous use and preservation. Here, we describe how we adapted an existing general purpose repository at the University of Vienna to the domain specific needs of life sciences. We complemented the existing functionality of the repository with extended metadata scheme and user interface to support the needs of and methodologies used in life science, without affecting the usability of the main repository. We thus evaded setting up a new system, which, in turn, allowed us to reduce required effort and minimise future maintenance costs. The larger vision is to create a repository that can be used across both the humanities and life sciences, which will not only be used as a system for digital preservation but equally well as a platform to facilitate research by aiming to meet the FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).

This presentation was held at the Japan Open Science Summit (DMP session) on 28 May 2019, Tokyo. The goal of the presentation is to show how machine-actionability can improve the quality of DMPs and enable a whole range of new use cases. Parts of the work being presented were created during the National Institute of Informatics (NII) International Internship Program at Kitamoto Lab.
