Abstract Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers, and current treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Most patients undergo surgery, which often requires extensive resection of the colon to prevent recurrence and metastasis of residual malignant tumor cells, leading to postoperative pain and discomfort in daily routines. Although versatile therapeutic patches have been developed to induce tumor apoptosis, achieving both great adhesiveness on the mucus layers of the colon tissue and anti‐cell/tissue adhesion to other surrounding organs remains a challenge. Herein, we report a Janus polysaccharide film comprising two polymers: mussel‐inspired catechol‐conjugated chitosan (Chi‐C) with muco‐adhesiveness, and alginate (Alg) with anti‐adhesion property. The Chi‐C and Alg polymers form a stably entangled bilayer film via electrostatic interactions. The Janus film shows a strong tissue adhesive strength of ∼10 kPa for the Chi‐C layer and weak strength of ∼1 kPa for the Alg layer. Particularly, the Janus film encapsulating an anti‐cancer drug exhibits a directional release profile to the tumor site, which is effective for triggering tumor death in in vivo colorectal tumor resection model. Ultimately, such anti‐cancer material strategies using bilayered structures are promising for advanced tumor therapy.

Abstract Recently, the 3D printing of conductive hydrogels has undergone remarkable advances in the fabrication of complex and functional structures. In the field of neural engineering, an increasing number of reports have been published on tissue engineering and bioelectronic approaches over the last few years. The convergence of 3D printing methods and electrically conducting hydrogels may create new clinical and therapeutic possibilities for precision regenerative medicine and implants. In this review, we summarize (i) advancements in preparation strategies for conductive materials, (ii) various printing techniques enabling the fabrication of electroconductive hydrogels, (iii) the required physicochemical properties of the printed constructs, (iv) their applications in bioelectronics and tissue regeneration for neural engineering, and (v) unconventional approaches and outlooks for the 3D printing of conductive hydrogels. This review provides technical insights into 3D printable conductive hydrogels and encompasses recent developments, specifically over the last few years of research in the neural engineering field.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to conduct a content analysis of research on technology use for teaching mathematics to students with disabilities. We applied word networks and structural topic modeling of 488 studies published from 1980 to 2021. Results showed that the words “computer” and “computer-assisted instruction” had the highest degree of centrality in the 1980s and 1990s, and “learning disability” was another central word in the 2000s and 2010s. The associated word probability for 15 topics also represented technology use within different instructional practices, tools, and students with either high- or low-incidence disabilities. A piecewise linear regression with knots in 1990, 2000, and 2010 demonstrated decreasing trends for the topics of computer-assisted instruction, software, mathematics achievement, calculators, and testing. Despite some fluctuations in the prevalence in the 1980s, the support for visual materials, learning disabilities, robotics, self-monitoring tools, and word problem-solving instruction topics showed increasing trends, particularly after 1990. Some research topics, including apps and auditory support, have gradually increased in topic proportions since 1980. Topics including fraction instruction, visual-based technology, and instructional sequence have shown increasing prevalence since 2010; this increase was statistically significant for the instructional sequence topic over the past decade.

Smart healthcare devices, which interacts with the human body by recording, analyzing and processing physiological signals, need soft and biocompatible electronics. Here, Son et al. report a self-healable and stretchable resistive switching random-access memory made of a Ag-gradient nanocomposite.

The measurement of biosignals in the clinical and healthcare fields is fundamental; however, conventional electrodes pose challenges such as incomplete skin contact and skin-related issues, hindering accurate biosignal measurement. To address these challenges, conductive hydrogels, which are valuable owing to their biocompatibility and flexibility, have been widely developed and explored for electrode applications. In this study, we fabricated a conductive hydrogel by mixing polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) with poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) polymers dissolved in deionized water, followed by light-triggered crosslinking. Notably, this study pioneered the use of a PEGDA−PEDOT:PSS hydrogel for electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring- a type of biosignal. The resulting PEGDA−PEDOT:PSS hydrogel demonstrated remarkable conductivity while closely approximating the modulus of skin elasticity. Additionally, it demonstrated biocompatibility and a high signal-to-noise ratio in the waveforms. This study confirmed the exceptional suitability of the PEGDA−PEDOT:PSS hydrogel for accurate biosignal measurements with potential applications in various wearable devices designed for biosignal monitoring.

In wearable bioelectronics, various studies have focused on enhancing prosthetic control accuracy by improving the quality of physiological signals. The fabrication of conductive composites through the addition of metal fillers is one way to achieve stretchability, conductivity, and biocompatibility. However, it is difficult to measure stable biological signals using these soft electronics during physical activities because of the slipping issues of the devices, which results in the inaccurate placement of the device at the target part of the body. To address these limitations, it is necessary to reduce the stiffness of the conductive materials and enhance the adhesion between the device and the skin. In this study, we measured the electromyography (EMG) signals by applying a three-layered hydrogel structure composed of chitosan–alginate–chitosan (CAC) to a stretchable electrode fabricated using a composite of styrene–ethylene–butylene–styrene and eutectic gallium-indium. We observed stable adhesion of the CAC hydrogel to the skin, which aided in keeping the electrode attached to the skin during the subject movement. Finally, we fabricated a multichannel array of CAC-coated composite electrodes (CACCE) to demonstrate the accurate classification of the EMG signals based on hand movements and channel placement, which was followed by the movement of the robot arm.

Skin has a dynamic surface and offers essential information through biological signals originating from internal organs, blood vessels, and muscles. Soft and stretchable bioelectronics can be used in wearable machines for long-term stability and to continuously obtain distinct bio-signals in conjunction with repeated expansion and contraction with physical activities. While monitoring bio-signals, the electrode and skin must be firmly attached for high signal quality. Furthermore, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) should be high enough, and accordingly, the ionic conductivity of an adhesive hydrogel needs to be improved. Here, we used a chitosan-alginate-chitosan (CAC) triple hydrogel layer as an interface between the electrodes and the skin to enhance ionic conductivity and skin adhesiveness and to minimize the mechanical mismatch. For development, thermoplastic elastomer Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene (SEBS) dissolved in toluene was used as a substrate, and gold nanomembranes were thermally evaporated on SEBS. Subsequently, CAC triple layers were drop-casted onto the gold surface one by one and dried successively. Lastly, to demonstrate the performance of our electrodes, a human electrocardiogram signal was monitored. The electrodes coupled with our CAC triple hydrogel layer showed high SNR with clear PQRST peaks.

Polymers for implantable devices are desirable for biomedical engineering applications. This study introduces a water-resistant, self-healing fluoroelastomer (SHFE) as an encapsulation material for antennas. The SHFE exhibits a tissue-like modulus (approximately 0.4 MPa), stretchability (at least 450%, even after self-healing in an underwater environment), self-healability, and water resistance (WVTR result: 17.8610 g m−2 day−1). Further, the SHFE is self-healing in underwater environments via dipole–dipole interactions, such that devices can be protected from the penetration of biofluids and withstand external damage. With the combination of the SHFE and antennas designed to operate inside the body, we fabricated implantable, wireless antennas that can transmit information from inside the body to a reader coil that is outside. For antennas designed considering the dielectric constant, the uniformity of the encapsulation layer is crucial. A uniform and homogeneous interface is formed by simply overlapping two films. This study demonstrated the possibility of wireless communication in vivo through experiments on rodents for 4 weeks, maintaining the maximum communication distance (15 mm) without chemical or physical deformation in the SHFE layer. This study illustrates the applicability of fluoroelastomers in vivo and is expected to contribute to realizing the stable operation of high-performance implantable devices.

Conductive hydrogels are promising materials in bioelectronics that ensure a tissue-like soft modulus and re-enact the electrophysiological function of damaged tissues. However, recent approaches to fabricating conductive hydrogels have proved difficult: fixing of the conductive hydrogels on the target tissues hydrogels requires the aids from other medical glues because of their weak tissue-adhesiveness. In this study, an intrinsically conductive and tissue-adhesive granular hydrogel consisting of a PEDOT:PSS conducting polymer and an adhesive catechol-conjugated alginate polymer was fabricated via an electrohydrodynamic spraying method. Because alginate-based polymers can be crosslinked by calcium ions, alginate-catechol polymers mixed with PEDOT:PSS granular hydrogels (ACP) were easily fabricated. The fabricated ACP exhibited not only adhesive and shear-thinning properties but also conductivity similar to that of muscle tissue. Additionally, the granular structure makes the hydrogel injectable through a syringe, enabling on-tissue printing. This multifunctional granular hydrogel can be applied to soft and flexible electronics to connect humans and machines.

An electrocorticogram (ECoG) is the electrical activity obtainable from the cerebral cortex and an informative source with considerable potential for future advanced applications in various brain-interfacing technologies. Considerable effort has been devoted to developing biocompatible, conformal, soft, and conductive interfacial materials for bridging devices and brain tissue; however, the implementation of brain-adaptive materials with optimized electrical and mechanical characteristics remains challenging. Herein, we present surface electrode arrays using the soft tough ionic conductive hydrogel (STICH). The newly proposed STICH features brain-adaptive softness with Young’s modulus of ~9.46 kPa, which is sufficient to form a conformal interface with the cortex. Additionally, the STICH has high toughness of ~36.85 kJ/mm3, highlighting its robustness for maintaining the solid structure during interfacing with wet brain tissue. The stretchable metal electrodes with a wavy pattern printed on the elastomer were coated with the STICH as an interfacial layer, resulting in an improvement of the impedance from 60 kΩ to 10 kΩ at 1 kHz after coating. Acute in vivo experiments for ECoG monitoring were performed in anesthetized rodents, thereby successfully realizing conformal interfacing to the animal’s cortex and the sensitive recording of electrical activity using the STICH-coated electrodes, which exhibited a higher visual-evoked potential (VEP) amplitude than that of the control device.

In bioelectronics, stretchable and self-healable electrodes can reliably measure electrophysiological signals from the human body because they have good modulus matching with tissue and high durability. In particular, the polymer–graphene composite has advantages when it is used as an electrode for bioelectronic sensor devices. However, it has previously been reported that external stimuli such as heat or light are required for the self-healing process of polymer/graphene composites. In this study, we optimized a conducting composite by mixing a self-healing polymer (SHP) and graphene. The composite materials can not only self-heal without external stimulation but also have rapid electrical recovery from repeated mechanical damage such as scratches. In addition, they had stable electrical endurance even when the cyclic test was performed over 200 cycles at 50% strain, so they can be useful for a bioelectronic sensor device with high durability. Finally, we measured the electromyogram signals caused by the movement of arm muscles using our composite, and the measured data were transmitted to a microcontroller to successfully control the movement of the robot’s hand.

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have become popular due to their advantages of a lower operating voltage and higher transconductance compared with conventional silicon transistors. However, current OECT platform-based skin-inspired electronics applications are limited due to the lack of stretchability in poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). Some meaningful structural design strategies to resolve this limitation, including rendering OECT to make it more stretchable, have been reported. However, these strategies require complicated fabrication processes and face challenges due to the low areal density of active devices because wavy interconnect parts account for a large area. Nevertheless, there have been only a few reports of fully deformable OECT having skin-like mechanical properties and deformability. In this study, we fabricated stretchable and conductivity-enhanced channel materials using a spray-coating method after a composite solution preparation by blending PEDOT:PSS with several ionic liquids. Among these, the PEDOT composite prepared using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulfate exhibited a better maximum transconductance value (~0.3 mS) than the other ion composites. When this material was used for our deformable OECT platform using stretchable Au nanomembrane electrodes on an elastomer substrate and an encapsulation layer, our d-ECT showed a barely degraded resistance value between the source and drain during 1000 cycles of a 30% repeated strain. We expect that our d-ECT device will serve as a step toward the development of more precise and accurate biomedical healthcare monitoring systems.

Extrusion-based 3D-bioprinting using hydrogels has exhibited potential in precision medicine; however, researchers are beset with several challenges. A major challenge of this technique is the production of constructs with sufficient height and fidelity to support cellular behavior in vivo. In this study, we present the 3D-bioprinting of cylindrical constructs with tunable gelation kinetics by controlling the covalent crosslinking density and gelation time of a tyramine-functionalized alginate hydrogel (ALG-TYR) via enzymatic reaction by horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The extruded filament was crosslinked for a second time on a support bath containing H2O2 to increase fidelity after printing. The resulting tubular construct, with a height of 6 mm and a wall thickness of 2 mm, retained its mechanical properties and had a maximum 2-fold swelling after 2 d. Furthermore, collagen (COL) was introduced into the ALG-TYR hydrogel network to increase the mechanical modulus and cell cytocompatibility, as the encapsulated fibroblast cells exhibited a higher cell viability in the ALG-TYR/COL construct (92.13 ± 0.70%) than in ALG-TYR alone (68.18 ± 3.73%). In summary, a vascular ECM-mimicking scaffold was 3D-bioprinted with the ALG-TYR/COL hybrid hydrogel, and this scaffold can support tissue growth for clinical translation in regenerative and personalized medicine.

For recently devised wound-healing materials, a variety of acute application systems with sustainable therapeutic effects on wound sites have been suggested. For example, hydrogel-type healing agents with porous structures and high drug encapsulation efficiencies have been developed for wound repair. However, challenges remain about the poor mechanical and adhesive properties of hydrogels. Herein, we propose a punicalagin (PC)-containing wound-healing hydrogel in adhesive form that is mechanically stable and has sustainable wound-healing therapeutic efficiency. The APC hydrogel, composed of alginate (ALG), PC, and chitosan–gallol (CHI–G), exhibits significant mechanical and self-healing properties, thus indicating that PC increases cross-linking in ALG/CHI–G as macromolecule. The PC-containing mechanically enhanced hydrogel demonstrates high tissue adhesiveness. Sustainable PC release for 192 h, which indicates high therapeutic effect of the released PC, and great blood compatibility are evaluated based on rapid blood coagulation and minimal hemolysis. The cytocompatibility and wound-healing abilities of the PC-containing APC hydrogel are greater than those of the non-PC hydrogel, as verified by cell compatibility and wound scratch assays. These results indicate that a suitable concentration of PC-containing hydrogel with sustainable moisture condition and PC release may inspire further polyphenol-agent-containing hydrogels as wound-healing agents with structural stability and therapeutic efficiency.

Liquid metals not only have the electrical property of conductivity, but they also have a unique characteristic of existing in a liquid state at room temperature, unlike ordinary stiff solid metals. However, in bioelectronics, the modulus matching well between a device and skin or tissue is considered very advantageous, because high-quality biological signals can be recorded. Therefore, it is possible to implement soft electronics with stable and robust electrical characteristics by using LM as a conductive liquid-state filler. In this study, we changed a type of liquid metal, Eutectic Gallium Indium (EGaIn), into a particle form via tip sonication and mixed it with a solution that dissolved Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene (SEBS) in toluene to fabricate a composite. The EGaIn-SEBS composite has high conductivity, excellent electrical durability under mechanically harsh conditions, and a degree of modulus similar to that of bare SEBS, which is lower than that of solid-filler-based SEBS composite. Finally, we demonstrated electrocardiogram signal monitoring using an EGaIn-Alginate two-layer electrode (EATE) that was fabricated by simply coating the surface of the composite with alginate hydrogel, which demonstrates excellent performance in bioelectronics.

This study investigates the effects of a synchronous online intervention that explicitly taught equivalent fractions using virtual manipulatives to fifth-grade students with learning disabilities. Employing a multiple probe across participants single-case design, this study provided 15 fraction lessons via video conferencing programs to three fifth-grade students with learning disabilities. During these online interventions, participants received one-on-one explicit instruction, practiced key concepts using virtual manipulatives, and solved fraction problems using interactive boards. Researcher-developed probes measured the participants' percentages of correct answers across baseline, intervention, and maintenance phases via an online assessment tool. In overall, students' performance improved as the intervention was introduced; however, the extent and maintenance of improvement varied according to the students' participation and perspectives regarding online instruction.

Flexible and soft bioelectronics used on skin tissue have attracted attention for the monitoring of human health. In addition to typical metal-based rigid electronics, soft polymeric materials, particularly conductive hydrogels, have been actively developed to fabricate biocompatible electrical circuits with a mechanical modulus similar to biological tissues. Although such conductive hydrogels can be wearable or implantable in vivo without any tissue damage, there are still challenges to directly writing complex circuits on the skin due to its low tissue adhesion and heterogeneous mechanical properties. Herein, we report cellulose-based conductive hydrogel inks exhibiting strong tissue adhesion and injectability for further on-skin direct printing. The hydrogels consisting of carboxymethyl cellulose, tannic acid, and metal ions (e.g., HAuCl4) were crosslinked via multiple hydrogen bonds between the cellulose backbone and tannic acid and metal-phenol coordinate network. Owing to this reversible non-covalent crosslinking, the hydrogels showed self-healing properties and reversible conductivity under cyclic strain from 0 to 400%, as well as printability on the skin tissue. In particular, the on-skin electronic circuit printed using the hydrogel ink maintained a continuous electrical flow under skin deformation, such as bending and twisting, and at high relative humidity of 90%. These printable and conductive hydrogels are promising for implementing structurally complicated bioelectronics and wearable textiles.

Hydrogels that have a capability to provide mechanical modulus matching between time-dynamic curvilinear tissues and bioelectronic devices have been considered tissue-interfacing ionic materials for stably sensing physiological signals and delivering feedback actuation in skin-inspired healthcare systems. These functionalities are totally different from those of elastomers with low ionic conductivity and higher stiffness. Despite such remarkable progress, their low conductivity remains limited in transporting electrical charges to internal or external terminals without undesired information loss, potentially leading to an unstable biotic–abiotic interfaces in the wearable electronics. Here, we report a soft stretchable conductive hydrogel composite consisting of alginate, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyacrylamide, and silver flakes. This composite was fabricated via sol–gel transition. In particular, the phase stability and low dynamic modulus rates of the conductive hydrogel were confirmed through an oscillatory rheological characterization. In addition, our conductive hydrogel showed maximal tensile strain (≈400%), a low deformations of cyclic loading (over 100 times), low resistance (≈8.4 Ω), and a high gauge factor (≈241). These stable electrical and mechanical properties allowed our composite hydrogel to fully support the operation of a light-emitting diode demonstration under mechanical deformation. Based on such durable performance, we successfully measured the electromyogram signals without electrical malfunction even in various motions.

This meta-analysis verifies associations between three dimensions of special education teachers’ (SET) burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) and student-, teacher-, and school-related variables. Altogether, 28 peer-reviewed English articles and 13 dissertations (total sample of teachers = 6,623) published between 1983 and December 2018 were analyzed. The degree of correlation effect sizes between special education teachers’ burnout and its related variables was extensive. Results revealed distinct relations by each burnout dimension: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment and student-, teacher-, and school-related variables. Student age (Fisher’s Z = .316) was significantly associated with SET depersonalization. Self-efficacy (Fisher’s Z = −0.390, emotional exhaustion; −0.321, depersonalization; 0.633, personal accomplishment), stress (0.366, emotional exhaustion; 0.340, depersonalization; −0.110 personal accomplishment), and support from school personnel (−0.119, emotional exhaustion; −0.140, depersonalization; 0.172, personal accomplishment) were also significantly related to each burnout dimension. Support programs to relieve SET burnout must consider these variables.

Adhesive hydrogels have been utilized as tissue sealants, hemostatic agents, and wound dressings, with the aim of replacing conventional sutures. To prevent immune response and serious inflammation from those hydrogels after sealing, natural biocompatible polysaccharides are widely used as a component of the hydrogels. However, the weak mechanical strength, insufficient adhesiveness, and rapid dissociation of the hydrogels necessitates additional suturing at the wound site. In this study, we report on a solid polysaccharide thread reversibly crosslinked with boronic acid-polyphenol complexation and its adhesive gelation for complete tissue sealing without additional suturing. The polysaccharide adhesive suture threads demonstrated long-term stability, which is useful when used for skin wound suturing. Specifically, their robust adhesion property occurred as soon as the threads were soaked, attaining a swollen hydrogel state, dependent on the presence of body fluids after suturing. Moreover, the pH of the body fluids affects the viscoelasticity and adhesiveness of the hydrogels in order to ensure a tight sealing. Therefore, we expect that these pH-responsive adhesive threads would be promising for the development of on-demand functional suture materials.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural polysaccharide with great biocompatibility for a variety of biomedical applications, such as tissue scaffolds, dermal fillers, and drug-delivery carriers. Despite the medical impact of HA, its poor adhesiveness and short-term in vivo stability limit its therapeutic efficacy. To overcome these shortcomings, a versatile modification strategy for the HA backbone has been developed. This strategy involves tethering phenol moieties on HA to provide both robust adhesiveness and intermolecular cohesion and can be used for oxidative crosslinking of the polymeric chain. However, a lack of knowledge still exists regarding the interchangeable phenolic adhesion and cohesion depending on the type of oxidizing agent used. Here, we reveal the correlation between phenolic adhesion and cohesion upon gelation of two different HA–phenol conjugates, HA–tyramine and HA–catechol, depending on the oxidant. For covalent/non-covalent crosslinking of HA, oxidizing agents, horseradish peroxidase/hydrogen peroxide, chemical oxidants (e.g., base, sodium periodate), and metal ions, were utilized. As a result, HA–catechol showed stronger adhesion properties, whereas HA–tyramine showed higher cohesion properties. In addition, covalent bonds allowed better adhesion compared to that of non-covalent bonds. Our findings are promising for designing adhesive and mechanically robust biomaterials based on phenol chemistry.

Soft biomimetic electronic devices primarily comprise an electronic skin (e-skin) capable of implementing various wearable/implantable applications such as soft human–machine interfaces, epidermal healthcare systems, and neuroprosthetics owing to its high mechanical flexibility, tissue conformability, and multifunctionality. The conformal contact of the e-skin with living tissues enables more precise analyses of physiological signals, even in the long term, as compared to rigid electronic devices. In this regard, e-skin can be considered as a promising formfactor for developing highly sensitive and transparent pressure sensors. Specifically, to minimize the modulus mismatch at the biotic–abiotic interface, transparent-conductive hydrogels have been used as electrodes with exceptional pressing durability. However, critical issues such as dehydration and low compatibility with elastomers remain a challenge. In this paper, we propose a skin-like transparent polymer-hydrogel hybrid pressure sensor (HPS) with microstructures based on the polyacrylamide/sodium-alginate hydrogel and p-PVDF-HFP-DBP polymer. The encapsulated HPS achieves conformal contact with skin due to its intrinsically stretchable, highly transparent, widely sensitive, and anti-dehydrative properties. We believe that the HPS is a promising candidate for a robust transparent epidermal stretchable-skin device.

Although skin-like pressure sensors exhibit high sensitivity with a high performance over a wide area, they have limitations owing to the critical issue of being linear only in a narrow strain range. Various strategies have been proposed to improve the performance of soft pressure sensors, but such a nonlinearity issue still exists and the sensors are only effective within a very narrow strain range. Herein, we fabricated a highly sensitive multi-channel pressure sensor array by using a simple thermal evaporation process of conducting nanomembranes onto a stretchable substrate. A rigid-island structure capable of dissipating accumulated strain energy induced by external mechanical stimuli was adopted for the sensor. The performance of the sensor was precisely controlled by optimizing the thickness of the stretchable substrate and the number of serpentines of an Au membrane. The fabricated sensor exhibited a sensitivity of 0.675 kPa−1 in the broad pressure range of 2.3–50 kPa with linearity (~0.990), and good stability (>300 Cycles). Finally, we successfully demonstrated a mapping of pressure distribution.

Abstract Conductive hydrogels are attractive to mimic electrophysiological environments of biological tissues and toward therapeutic applications. Injectable and conductive hydrogels are of particular interest for applications in 3D printing or for direct injection into tissues; however, current approaches to add conductivity to hydrogels are insufficient, leading to poor gelation, brittle properties, or insufficient conductivity. Here, an approach is developed using the jamming of microgels to form injectable granular hydrogels, where i) hydrogel microparticles (i.e., microgels) are formed with water‐in‐oil emulsions on microfluidics, ii) microgels are modified via an in situ metal reduction process, and iii) the microgels are jammed into a solid, permitting easy extrusion from a syringe. Due to the presence of metal nanoparticles at the jammed interface with high surface area in this unique design, the granular hydrogels have greater conductivity than non‐particle (i.e., bulk) hydrogels treated similarly or granular hydrogels either without metal nanoparticles or containing encapsulated nanoparticles. The conductivity of the granular hydrogels is easily modified through mixing conductive and non‐conductive microgels during fabrication and they can be applied to the 3D printing of lattices and to bridge muscle defects. The versatility of this conductive granular hydrogel will permit numerous applications where conductive materials are needed.

Implantable electronics have recently been attracting attention because of the promising advances in personalized healthcare. They can be used to diagnose and treat chronic diseases by monitoring and applying bioelectrical signals to various organs. However, there are challenges regarding the rigidity and hardness of typical electronic devices that can trigger inflammatory reactions in tissues. In an effort to improve the physicochemical properties of conventional implantable electronics, soft hydrogel-based platforms have emerged as components of implantable electronics. It is important that they meet functional criteria, such as stretchability, biocompatibility, and self-healing. Herein, plant-inspired conductive alginate hydrogels composed of “boronic acid modified alginate” and “oligomerized epigallocatechin gallate,” which are extracted from plant compounds, are proposed. The conductive hydrogels show great stretchability up to 500% and self-healing properties because of the boronic acid-cis-diol dynamic covalent bonds. In addition, as a simple strategy to increase the electrical conductivity of the hydrogels, ionically crosslinked shells with cations (e.g., sodium) were generated on the hydrogel under physiological salt conditions. This decreased the resistance of the conductive hydrogel down to 900 ohm without trading off the original properties of stretchability and self-healing. The hydrogels were used for “electrophysiological bridging” to transfer electromyographic signals in an ex vivo muscle defect model, showing a great bridging effect comparable to that of a muscle-to-muscle contact model. The use of plant-inspired ionically conductive hydrogels is a promising strategy for designing implantable and self-healable bioelectronics.

Alginate is a representative biocompatible natural polymer with low cost for a variety of biomedical applications, such as wound dressing, drug delivery systems, tissue scaffolds, and 3D bioprinting. Particularly, the rapid and facile gelation of alginate via ionic interactions with divalent cations has been used for in situ 3D hydrogel fiber formation, which is potentially applicable to engineering cell alignment. However, challenges in enhancing the mechanical properties of alginate hydrogel fibers under physiological conditions are unresolved because of their fast dissociation by ion exchange. Herein, we report a stabilization strategy for alginate hydrogel fibers through mussel-inspired catechol chemistry, which involves inter-catechol crosslinking within a few minutes under basic conditions. The fabrication of catechol-tethered alginate hydrogel fibers through wet-spinning enabled the design of mechanically strong 3D constructs consisting of fibers. Catechol-to-quinone oxidation followed by covalent crosslinking enhanced the tensile strength of a single fiber. Additionally, the ‘gluing’ capability of the catechol stabilized the interface among the fibers, thus retaining the shape fidelity of the 3D constructs and encapsulating the cell density during culture. Our findings will be useful for designing bioink materials specialized in fibrous-type tissue scaffolds with mechanical stability.
