The peril increasing due to the increase in the accumulation of different types of plastic waste in the environment which is often burned, buried, or thrown into rivers and seas polluting the air, soil, and water. Therefore, it has become necessary to find ways to get rid of them primarily by using them as substitutes for materials used in other industries. Beams with 180 × 280 mm cross section and 2000 mm length were tested under a four-point bending load system. Three beams were ast with sustainable concrete made from high-strength concrete (HSC) containing high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic type was taken from shredding vegetable boxes and used as a substitute for coarse aggregate with 10%, 20%, and 30% ratios. The fourth one contains 0% HDPE replacement and represents the reference beam. Test results for the beam with 30% replacement showed that the cracking manner and failure time were close to the reference beam and the toughness increased by 24%, while the load carrying capacity was reduced by 7%. These results are very promising to take into consideration a partial HDPE plastic replacement of 30% by the natural coarse aggregate while keeping a competent structural flexural behavior.

In the present paper, results of testing eleven ultra-high performance steel fibers concrete (UHPSFC) corbels with concrete compressive strength 150 MPa and under vertical loading are reported. The main test variables were shear span-to depth ratio, main tension reinforcement ratio and the provision of secondary reinforcement (closed stirrups). In all corbels, except one, the main steel bars yielded before failure and corbels failed in a consistent manner. Whereas the validity from provision the secondary reinforcement in the UHPSFC corbels represents by a significant increase in the corbels stiffness with taking into consideration the corbels failure modes. The test results in terms of load versus deflection curves, stiffness, ductility and crack patterns show the effectiveness of using ultra high performance steel fibers concrete to ensure a superior strength and deformation capacity in reinforced concrete corbels. Experimental results have been compared with diverse prediction methods. The truss model can provide accurate strength predictions in comparison with the ACI 318-14 cod’s procedure.

Background: Rates of caesarean section (CS) in developing as well as developed countries have increased beyond World Health Organization (WHO) recommended level of 15% almost doubling in the last decade. Aim: To assess the rate, indications and early complications of CS delivery at Aljamahiriya hospital, Benghazi, Libya. Methods: A retrospective study involved representative sample of 670 out of 4654 of cases delivered by CS during the year 2009. Data were recorded from the hospital files, and statistical reports of the department of statistics. A predesigned questionnaire was used to collect the data needed for the study including parity, type of CS, indications for emergency and elective CS and early complications that might have led to CS. Results: A total of 16109 deliveries were reported in Aljamahiriya hospital during 2009, 4654 of them were delivered by CS constituting 22.4% of total deliveries. The main indications of emergency CS were fetal distress (38.2%) and previous two scars (22%), while in elective CS the main indication was previous scars (50%). The overall rates of early complications were 2.3% for emergency CS and 3.9% for elective ones; wound infection was reported among 1.8% of cases with elective CS, while post partum hemorrhage constituted the most common complication of the emergency CS (1.1%). Conclusion and Recommendations: The high and unprecedented increase in CS rates reported in this study may be partly due to CSs that are not medically indicated, and suggest that physician practice patterns and patient preferences should be explored. The present study is the first step to document actual practice. It points out for further in depth studies to explore the medical, environmental and social factors contributing to the high rate of CS. In addition, similar studies should be carried out at other hospitals in Libya. The results should be used by the national health authorities to introduce more evidence based practice and so decrease maternal mortality and morbidity.

Abstract Cancer, a multifaceted and diverse ailment, presents formidable obstacles to traditional treatment modalities. Nanotechnology presents novel prospects for surmounting these challenges through its capacity to facilitate meticulous and regulated administration of therapeutic agents to malignant cells while concurrently modulating the immune system to combat neoplasms. Bacteria and their derivatives have emerged as highly versatile and multifunctional platforms for cancer nanotherapy within the realm of nanomaterials. This comprehensive review delves into the multifaceted and groundbreaking implementations of bacterial nanotechnology within cancer therapy. This review encompasses four primary facets: the utilization of bacteria as living conveyors of medicinal substances, the employment of bacterial components as agents that stimulate the immune system, the deployment of bacterial vectors as tools for delivering genetic material, and the development of bacteria-derived nano-drugs as intelligent nano-medications. Furthermore, we elucidate the merits and modalities of operation pertaining to these bacterial nano-systems, along with their capacity to synergize with other cutting-edge nanotechnologies, such as CRISPR-Cas systems. Additionally, we offer insightful viewpoints regarding the forthcoming trajectories and prospects within this expanding domain. It is our deduction that bacterial nanotechnology embodies a propitious and innovative paradigm in the realm of cancer therapy, which has the potential to provide numerous advantages and synergistic effects in enhancing the outcomes and quality of life for individuals afflicted with cancer.

Abstract Rock typing techniques have relied on either electrical or hydraulic properties. The study introduces a novel approach for reservoir rock typing, the hydraulic-electric index (HEI), which combines the strengths of traditional electrical and hydraulic rock typing methods to characterize carbonate reservoirs more accurately. By normalizing the ratio of permeability and formation resistivity factor (K/FRF) with respect to porosity, the HEI method is applied to two datasets of carbonate core samples: dataset 1 consists of 112 carbonate core samples from the Tensleep formation in the Bighorn basin of Wyoming and Montana, and dataset 2 includes 81 carbonate core samples from the Asmari formation in the south-west of Iran. Statistical analysis confirms the effectiveness of the HEI in predicting permeability, with high determination coefficients for both datasets (resulting in determination coefficients (R2) of 0.965 and 0.904 for dataset 1 and dataset 2, respectively). The results classify the rock samples into distinct rock types, nine rock types for dataset 1 and four rock types for dataset 2, and demonstrate the HEI ability to capture the relationship between hydraulic conductivity and electrical resistivity in carbonate reservoir rocks. Applying the HEI method to the validation dataset yielded highly accurate permeability predictions, with average of determination coefficients of 0.883 and 0.859 for dataset 1 and dataset 2, respectively. Validation of the HEI method further confirms (20% of the dataset was set aside for validation, while the remaining 80% was used for the rock typing approach (5 folds)) its accuracy in predicting permeability, highlighting its robust predictive capacity for estimating permeability in carbonate reservoirs.

Abstract In this paper, a microstrip Wilkinson power divider (MWPD) based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is designed, simulated, and fabricated using novel resonators. In addition, attenuators and open-ended stubs are incorporated to generate a broad cut-off band and reduce unwanted harmonics. The proposed power divider has a central frequency of 1 GHz. The performance of each used resonator is analyzed based on lumped-element circuit models.The L and C parameters of the equivalent circuit of the used resonators are predicted and optimized with the assistance of the PSO method. The subsequent phase was the fabrication of the proposed MWPD, after which its performance was evaluated in the light of the results obtained from the simulation. It was discovered that there was a high degree of concordance between the two. On the other hand, the fabricated circuit has several benefits, including a suitable S12 of − 3.15 dB, a high return loss of less than − 24 dB at the operating frequency, a compact size of 0.058 $${\varvec{\lambda}}_{{\varvec{g}}}$$ λ g × 0.064 $${\varvec{\lambda}}_{{\varvec{g}}}$$ λ g , and the ability to remove undesired harmonics. The results show a high level of suppression of the unwanted harmonics (up to the 16th harmonic) and a great responsiveness in the passband, while having very low ripple. As a result, the proposed circuit may be used in a wide variety of electronic devices, such as radar transmitter and receiver circuits, and many other high-frequency systems.

Mechanical properties of lean Mg-xLi-1RE-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloys after hot working by the extrusion process were systematically investigated. By increasing Li content, the coarsening of the dynamic recrystallization (DRX) grain size (D) was recorded. This was ascribed to the decrease of the solidus temperature (TSolidus) by increasing Li content, and hence, the increase of the homologous temperature during hot deformation (T/TSolidus). As a result, the tensile yield stress (TYS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), compressive yield stress (CYS), and ultimate compressive strength (UCS) decreased by increasing Li content. Accordingly, the Hall-Petch relationships of TYS = 145.8 + 69/√D and CYS = 69.3 + 100/√D were proposed, where TYS, CYS, and D are expressed in MPa, MPa, and μm, respectively. However, total elongation in the tension test and fracture strain in the compression test were significantly improved and the crystallographic texture intensity decreased by increasing the Li content. These improvements were found to be quite beneficial for overcoming and breaking the strength–ductility trade-off. The mechanical behavior of these alloys was compared to other competitive alloys for lightweight applications.

The accumulation of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MPs) in soil has raised considerable concerns; however, the effects of their persistence and mitigation on agroecosystems have not been explored. This study aimed to assess the detrimental effects of PE-MPs on a soil-plant system and evaluate their mitigation using a novel microbial consortium (MC). We incorporated low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) at two different concentrations, along with a control (0 %, 1 %, and 2 % w/w) into the sandy loam soil for a duration of 135 days. The samples were also treated with a novel MC and incubated for 135 days. The MC comprised three bacterial strains (Ralstonia pickettii (MW290933) strain SHAn2, Pseudomonas putida strain ShA, and Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus XDB9 (T) strain S7–10F), and a fungal strain (Aspergillus niger strain F1–16S). Sunflowers were subsequently cultivated, and physiological growth parameters were measured. The results showed that adding 2 % LDPE significantly decreased soil pH by 1.06 units compared to the control. Moreover, adding 2 % HDPE resulted in a more significant decrease in soil electrical conductivity (EC) relative to LDPE and the control. A dose-dependent increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was observed, with the highest DOC found in 2 % LDPE. The addition of higher dosages of LDPE reduced soil bulk density (BD) more than HDPE. The addition of 2 % HDPE increased the water drop penetration time (WDPT) but decreased the mean weight diameter of soil aggregates (MWD) and water-stable aggregates (WSA) compared to LDPE. The results also revealed that higher levels of LDPE enhanced soil basal respiration (BR) and microbial carbon biomass (MBC). The interaction of MC and higher MP percentages considerably reduced soil pH, EC, BD, and WDPT but significantly increased soil DOC, MWD, WSA, BR, and MBC. Regarding plant growth, incorporating 2 % PE-MPs significantly reduced physiological responses of sunflower: chlorophyll content (Chl; −15.2 %), Fv/Fm ratio (-25.3 %), shoot dry weight (ShD; −31.3 %), root dry weight (RD; −40 %), leaf area (LA; −38.4 %), and stem diameter (StemD; −25 %) compared to the control; however, the addition of novel MC considerably reduced and ameliorated the harmful effects of 2 % PE-MPs on the investigated plant growth responses.

Abstract Background and Aims Vitamin D deficiency impacts a significant proportion of the world's population, and this deficiency has been linked to various conditions characterized by imbalanced serotonin regulation. The objective of this systematic review and meta‐analysis was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on serum serotonin levels. Methods We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Central for Randomized Clinical Trials, and Web of Science up to September 2022, without any language restrictions. The effect sizes were calculated using the standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results Six randomized clinical trials involving 356 participants were included in the analysis. Our findings indicated no significant changes in serotonin levels between the intervention and control groups (SMD: 0.24 ng/mL, 95% CI: −0.28, 0.75, p > 0.10). Subgroup analysis also did not reveal any significant changes in serotonin levels among children, participants with autism spectrum disorders, interventions lasting 10 weeks or longer, or those receiving vitamin D doses below 4000 IU/day. Conclusion Although the results obtained in this systematic review are inconclusive, they support the need for further well‐designed randomized trials to assess the potential role of vitamin D supplementation in regulating serotonin levels and potentially ameliorating depression and related disorders.

The emerging strategy of biomimetic nanoparticles (NPs) via cellular membrane camouflage holds great promise in cancer therapy. This scholarly review explores the utilization of cellular membranes derived from diverse cellular entities; blood cells, immune cells, cancer cells, stem cells, and bacterial cells as examples of NP coatings. The camouflaging strategy endows NPs with nuanced tumor-targeting abilities such as self-recognition, homotypic targeting, and long-lasting circulation, thus also improving tumor therapy efficacy overall. The comprehensive examination encompasses a variety of cell membrane camouflaged NPs (CMCNPs), elucidating their underlying targeted therapy mechanisms and delineating diverse strategies for anti-cancer applications. Furthermore, the review systematically presents the synthesis of source materials and methodologies employed in order to construct and characterize these CMCNPs, with a specific emphasis on their use in cancer treatment.

Abstract Background and Aim Celiac disease (CD) has proinflammatory and pathogenic immune responses to gluten in intestinal tissue, leading to structural changes in the mucosa of the small intestine. The association of human leukocyte antigen (HLA)‐DQ2 and DQ8 genotypes with CD has been previously reported. This test has a negative predictive value close to 100%, so its main purpose is to rule out the detection of CD completely or almost completely. There is limited information regarding HLA‐DQ4/5 in CD. This study was conducted to determine the HLA‐DQ4/5 genotypes in a group of Southwestern Iranian children with CD. Methods We conducted a case‐control study in Southwest Iran involving 100 participants, employing a nonprobabilistic sampling method. Samples were taken from participants' oral buccal mucosa at Imam Sajjad Hospital of Yasuj, Iran. Then DNA was extracted from these samples and used to determine the frequency of HLA‐DQ4/5 genotypes through Sequence‐Specific Primer‐Polymerase Chain Reaction assay. SPSS 20 was utilized for statistical analyses. Results Fifty diagnosed patients with CD (high anti‐tissue transglutaminase [tTG]‐IgA level [upper limit of normal] with pathological findings of Marsh III) and 50 non‐CD individuals (normal anti‐tTG‐IgA level and normal total IgA level) were enrolled in the study from August 5, 2022 to October 15, 2023. Abstract Aims The purpose of this study was to evaluate the preparedness of Iranian nurses for potential pandemics. Background Nurses play a critical role in managing pandemics. They require adequate training, proper equipment, and organizational support to be well-prepared. Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Ardabil, Iran, from July to September 2023, involving 233 nurses from five hospitals. The number of nurses required for each hospital was calculated based on the proportion of nurses in each hospital. Data was collected through a paper-based form that included information about the participants' demographic characteristics and their level of pandemic preparedness in health services. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics to determine the demographic characteristics and levels of pandemic preparedness. Pearson's test was also conducted to establish a relationship between different dimensions of pandemic preparedness. Results Most participants relied on clinical measures and supported using human resources and environmental methods to curb the transmission of a pandemic. They felt assured in their ability to explain the preventive measures against the pandemic. However, fewer respondents had access to healthcare improvement programs, and only a few worked remotely from home. Conclusions According to our study, 90.1% of nurses believe hand washing is the most effective way to prevent spreading infections. Additionally, healthcare professionals can use various tools to respond to the pandemic, including screening for COVID-19 at work, health and wellness programs, telecommuting, COVID-19 Safe programs, social media, and posters. Nurses need continuous education in hand hygiene, health programs, remote work options, and pandemic-safe programs to control infections, reduce risks, and optimize patient care during the pandemic.

Abstract Background The surge in the utilization of CT scans for COVID-19 diagnosis and monitoring during the pandemic is undeniable. This increase has brought to the forefront concerns about the potential long-term health consequences, especially radiation-induced cancer risk. This study aimed to quantify the potential cancer risk associated with CT scans performed for COVID-19 detection. Methods In this cross-sectional study data from a total of 561 patients, who were referred to the radiology center at Imam Hossein Hospital in Shahroud, was collected. CT scan reports were categorized into three groups based on the radiologist’s interpretation. The BEIR VII model was employed to estimate the risk of radiation-induced cancer. Results Among the 561 patients, 299 (53.3%) were males and the average age of the patients was 49.61 ± 18.73 years. Of the CT scans, 408 (72.7%) were reported as normal. The average age of patients with normal, abnormal, and potentially abnormal CT scans was 47.57 ± 19.06, 54.80 ± 16.70, and 58.14 ± 16.60 years, respectively (p-value

Abstract Background The prevalence of obesity is a growing global public health concern. Certain dietary amino acids have been shown to have a potential therapeutic role in improving metabolic syndrome parameters and body composition in individuals with obesity. However, some amino acids have been linked to an increased risk of cardiometabolic disorders. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the association between dietary amino acid patterns and cardiometabolic risk factors in individuals with obesity. Methods This cross-sectional study included 335 participants with obesity (57.9% males and 41.5% females) from Tabriz and Tehran, Iran. The participants were between the ages of 20–50, with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or higher, and free from certain medical conditions. The study examined participants’ general characteristics, conducted anthropometric assessments, dietary assessments, and biochemical assessments. The study also used principal component analysis to identify amino acid intake patterns and determined the association between these patterns and cardiometabolic risk factors in individuals with obesity. Results Upon adjusting for potential confounders, the study found that individuals in the third tertiles of pattern 1 and 2 were more likely to have lower LDL levels (OR = 0.99 and 95% CI (0.98–0.99)) for both. Additionally, a significant decrease in total cholesterol was observed in the third tertiles of pattern 2 in model II (OR = 0.99, 95% CI (0.98–0.99)). These findings suggest a potential cardioprotective effect of these amino acid patterns in managing cardiometabolic risk factors in individuals with obesity. Conclusions This study found that two identified amino acid patterns were associated with lower serum LDL and total cholesterol levels, while a third pattern was associated with higher serum triglycerides. The specific amino acids contributing to these patterns highlight the importance of targeted dietary interventions in managing cardiometabolic risk factors in individuals with obesity.

The study successfully implemented six low-impact development (LID) methods to manage surface runoff in urban areas: green roof, infiltration trench, bio retention cell, rain barrel, green roof combined with infiltration trench, and rain barrel combined with bio-retention cell. Each method has unique benefits in mitigating surface runoff effects in urban environments. The following four indicators were used to evaluate the methods: runoff volume reduction, peak runoff flow rate reduction, economic sustainability, and social sustainability. The study, which lasted approximately 4 months, was conducted in an eastern Tehran metropolis residential area with a mix of old and new buildings. The SWMM model determined runoff volume and peak flow values, and a price analysis list determined the economic index. Local experts completed 25 questionnaires to evaluate the social index. Fuzzy TOPSIS multi-indicator decision criteria were used to prioritize LID methods, and the Rain barrel + Bio retention cell combined scenario emerged as the best option based on all four criteria. The method reduced peak runoff flow by 23.1–66.1% under rainfall with 10-year return periods. The green roof + infiltration trench method had the highest percentage reduction of 2,737 m3, while the infiltration trench had the lowest reduction of 273 m3. HIGHLIGHTS Successful implementation of LID methods enhances urban runoff management.; Green roofs and rain barrels prove highly effective in diverse ways.; Four-month field study evaluates LID methods based on runoff indicators and sustainability.; Fuzzy TOPSIS analysis identifies Rain barrel + Bio retention cell as the best LID option.; Green roof + infiltration trench method demonstrates the highest peak runoff flow reduction (66.1%).;

Abstract In this study, a split-type photocatalytic membrane reactor (PMR), incorporating suspended graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as photocatalyst and a layered polymeric composite (using polyamide, polyethersulfone and polysulfone polymers) as a membrane was fabricated to remove tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions as the world's second most used and discharged antibiotic in wastewater. The photocatalyst was synthesised from melamine by ultrasonic-assisted thermal polymerisation method and, along with the membrane, was characterised using various methods, including Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis (BET), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and Ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis). The PMR process was optimised, using Design-Expert software for tetracycline removal in terms of UV irradiation time, pH, photocatalyst loading, tetracycline concentration, and membrane separation iteration. It was revealed that a membrane-integrated reactor as a sustainable system could effectively produce clean water by simultaneous removal of tetracycline and photocatalyst from aqueous solution. The maximum removal of 94.8% was obtained at the tetracycline concentration of 22.16 ppm, pH of 9.78 with 0.56 g/L of photocatalyst in the irradiation time of 113.77 min after six times of passing membrane. The PMR system showed reasonable reusability by about a 25.8% drop in TC removal efficiency after seven cycles at optimal conditions. The outcomes demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed PMR system in tetracycline removal from water and suggest that it can be scaled as an effective approach for a sustainable supply of antibiotic-free clean water.

The effect of cooking aerosol on the human heart was investigated in this study. The heart rate and blood pressure of 33 healthy adults were monitored before, exactly after, and two hours post-exposure (30 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes after cooking). One hundred twenty grams of ground beef was fried in sunflower oil for twenty minutes using a gas stove without ventilation. Ultrafine particles, indoor temperature, relative humidity, carbon dioxide, oil, and meat temperatures were monitored during the experiment. This study expands previous research on political endorsements by focusing on the tone of the endorsement, rather than the endorser or the presence/absence of any endorsement at all. Using a 2×2 experimental design and a sample of 906 registered voters from a midwestern U.S. state, this study measures the effect of positive and negative endorsements on the voter perceptions of the endorsee, endorser, and unendorsed candidate during a partisan primary election campaign. Results support the idea that positive endorsements generally improve voters’ attitudes toward the endorsee and the endorser and negative endorsements generally hurt voters’ perception of the unendorsed candidate. Further interaction analyses show that factors such as a voter’s existing enthusiasm for politics, government, and politicians can moderate the effect of endorsements. The findings are in line with the proposition of the Social Judgment Theory and support the existing literature on the effect of endorsements.

Ions are formed during the combustion process in internal combustion engines. The measurement of ions inside the combustion chamber produces reliable information about the combustion process. The present study focuses on the formation of ions inside the combustion chamber of diesel engines with different injection timing. For this purpose, a multi-zone thermodynamic model is utilized to simulate the closed cycle of the engine. To understand the kinetic behavior of the ions, the model is connected to an ionic chemical kinetics mechanism with 336 reactions and 81 species. Six important ionic reactions comprising 5 ions are used in the ionic mechanism. Dvode differential equation solver is also employed to calculate the energy and kinetics equations. The developed model has an acceptable accuracy in predicting the performance and pollutants of diesel engines. Based on the results, the ion formation is delayed by delaying the fuel injection timing. The maximum amount of in-cylinder ions depends on injection timing. In-cylinder ion current can predict the start of combustion accurately.

OpenStreetMap (OSM) is among the most prominent Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) initiatives, aiming to create a freely accessible world map. Despite its success, the data quality of OSM remains variable. This study begins by identifying the quality metrics proposed by earlier research to assess the quality of OSM building footprints. It then evaluates the quality of OSM building data from 2018 and 2023 for five cities within Québec, Canada. The analysis reveals a significant quality improvement over time. In 2018, the completeness of OSM building footprints in the examined cities averaged around 5%, while by 2023, it had increased to approximately 35%. However, this improvement was not evenly distributed. For example, Shawinigan saw its completeness surge from 2% to 99%. The study also finds that OSM contributors were more likely to digitize larger buildings before smaller ones. Positional accuracy saw enhancement, with the average error shrinking from 3.7 m in 2018 to 2.3 m in 2023. The average distance measure suggests a modest increase in shape accuracy over the same period. Overall, while the quality of OSM building footprints has indeed improved, this study shows that the extent of the improvement varied significantly across different cities. Shawinigan experienced a substantial increase in data quality compared to its counterparts.

Background: Few studies have evaluated COVID-19 vaccine efficacy in patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEI).Objective: To evaluate the levels of antibody (Ab) production and function after COVID-19 vaccination in IEI patients with phagocytic, complement, and Ab deficiencies and their comparison with healthy controls.Methods: Serum samples were collected from 41 patients and 32 healthy controls at least one month after the second dose of vaccination, while clinical evaluations continued until the end of the third dose. Levels of specific anti-receptor-binding domain (RBD) IgG and anti-RBD neutralizing antibodies were measured using EUROIMMUN and ChemoBind kits, respectively. Abstract Stroke remains a global health concern, necessitating early prediction for effective management. Atherosclerosis-induced internal carotid and intra cranial stenosis contributes significantly to stroke risk. This study explores the relationship between blood pressure and stroke prediction, focusing on internal carotid artery (ICA) branches: middle cerebral artery (MCA), anterior cerebral artery (ACA), and their role in hemodynamics. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) informed by the Windkessel model were employed to simulate patient-specific ICA models with introduced stenosis. Central to our investigation is the impact of stenosis on blood pressure, flow velocity, and flow rate across these branches, incorporating Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) analysis. Results highlight differential sensitivities to blood pressure variations, with M1 branch showing high sensitivity, ACA moderate, and M2 minimal. Comparing blood pressure fluctuations between ICA and MCA revealed heightened sensitivity to potential reverse flow compared to ICA and ACA comparisons, emphasizing MCA's role. Blood flow adjustments due to stenosis demonstrated intricate compensatory mechanisms. FFR emerged as a robust predictor of stenosis severity, particularly in the M2 branch. In conclusion, this study provides comprehensive insights into hemodynamic complexities within major intracranial arteries, elucidating the significance of blood pressure variations, flow attributes, and FFR in stenosis contexts. Subject-specific data integration enhances model reliability, aiding stroke risk assessment and advancing cerebrovascular disease understanding.

Comprehension of the evolutions and phenomena that occur on the atomic scale can become a bridge toward a greater understanding of the properties of materials on the macro scale. In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate nano-structural evolutions in the SLM process of the near-equiatomic AlCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy. Fifteen simulation systems were designed by altering laser power (400–800 eV/ps), scanning speed (0.2–2.0 Å/ps), and hatch spacing (5 and 10 nm) as the process variables for addressing their effects on the structure at the atomic scale. The results showed that the effect of parameters on the atomic displacement is decreased from laser power to scanning speed and hatch spacing, respectively. It was also indicated that the HCP stripes form due to the extreme cooling rates experienced in the process. Furthermore, the reduction of the hatch space can improve the surface quality by spreading the atoms accumulated in the fusion boundary of the previous laser track. These results indicate that controlling volumetric energy density (VED) by lowering laser power and scanning speed as much as possible, is beneficial to obtain the optimum crystal structure of the manufactured parts in this process. Although decreasing the hatch space has no considerable effect on the crystal structure, it can help to achieve a good surface finish which is essential in the SLM industry.

Abstract Biomedical investigations in nanotherapeutics and nanomedicine have recently intensified in pursuit of new therapies with improved efficacy. Quantum dots (QDs) are promising nanomaterials that possess a wide array of advantageous properties, including electronic properties, optical properties, and engineered biocompatibility under physiological conditions. Due to these characteristics, QDs are mainly used for biomedical labeling and theranostic (therapeutic-diagnostic) agents. QDs can be functionalized with ligands to facilitate their interaction with the immune system, specific IgE, and effector cell receptors. However, undesirable side effects such as hypersensitivity and toxicity may occur, requiring further assessment. This review systematically summarizes the potential uses of QDs in the allergy field. An overview of the definition and development of QDs is provided, along with the applications of QDs in allergy studies, including the detection of allergen-specific IgE (sIgE), food allergens, and sIgE in cellular tests. The potential treatment of allergies with QDs is also described, highlighting the toxicity and biocompatibility of these nanodevices. Finally, we discuss the current findings on the immunotoxicity of QDs. Several favorable points regarding the use of QDs for allergy diagnosis and treatment are noted.

Abstract The sustainability of groundwater aquifers requires evaluating several parameters, the most important of which are hydraulic parameters. Therefore, the essential aim of this research is to develop a management plan for the Moghra aquifer in order to prevent the expanding of water level decline and degradation of groundwater quality due to overexploitation and scarcity of recharge. To achieve this goal, all aquifer hydraulic parameters such as transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, radius of interference, specific capacity, resulted drawdown, well loss, formation loss, well efficiency, and optimum safe yield had been measured for 40 groundwater wells drilled in the new reclaimed areas of Moghra Oasis. Based on geographic information system (GIS), hydrogeological cross sections and thematic maps for all parameters were created such as aquifer thickness, water table, groundwater flow direction, drawdown and groundwater salinity maps. The results revealed that clay and shale beds separated the three water-bearing formations of the Moghra aquifer. The aquifer-saturated thickness ranged from 30 and 102 m, and the groundwater level was below the mean sea level for all wells (ranges from − 72 to − 26.6 m). The calculated hydraulic parameters based on the analysis of long-duration pumping tests indicated that the studied aquifer has a wide variety of transmissivity (T) between 631 and 3768 m2/day, hydraulic conductivity (K) between 13.4 and 104.6 m/day, radius of influence from 126.3 to 581.3 m and specific capacity between 377.14 and 883.72 m2/day. On the other hand, the evaluation of existing drilled wells performance based on the results of step tests showed that well loss coefficient ranges between 0.0004749 and 0.0676 (h2/m5), formation loss coefficient varies from 3.34 × 10–8 to 4.80 × 10–6 (h/m2), well efficiency (γ) ranged from 50.53 to 98.08%, and optimum safe yield ranged from 40 to 98 (m3/h). Results of aquifer mapping and pumping tests can be more important for solving water scarcity issues, non-polluting water issues, health issues, and source of fresh water on the surface of the earth. The characterization of aquifer parameters in the study area, however, should be a significant component in the scientific planning and sustainability of groundwater.
