The AA7075-T6 material is widely used in aerospace applications due to its favourable strength-to-weight ratio and cost-effectiveness. The material undergoes a process of cold rolling and subsequent stretching to form metal sheets. This process generates residual compressive stresses on the surface of the material. Surface changes in the material are observed at low stress levels, resulting in variations in residual stresses and surface roughness. This article presents an approach to monitor the surface state changes of AA7075-T6 material during dynamic loading using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor. Numerical Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations analyse the transfer of deformations from the damaged surface through the adhesive layer to FBG with different cladding thicknesses. Loading induces microcrack-related intensity changes in the FBG optical spectrum and deformation response. The magnitude of the response is greater, when the cladding thickness of the optical fibre is thinner. Experimental results show that the FBG optical spectrum response varies with cumulative number of dynamic cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Sign language users recruit physical properties of visual motion to convey linguistic information. Research on American Sign Language (ASL) indicates that signers systematically use kinematic features (e.g., velocity, deceleration) of dominant hand motion for distinguishing specific semantic properties of verb classes in production ( Malaia & Wilbur, 2012a) and process these distinctions as part of the phonological structure of these verb classes in comprehension ( Malaia, Ranaweera, Wilbur, & Talavage, 2012). These studies are driven by the event visibility hypothesis by Wilbur (2003), who proposed that such use of kinematic features should be universal to sign language (SL) by the grammaticalization of physics and geometry for linguistic purposes. In a prior motion capture study, Malaia and Wilbur (2012a) lent support for the event visibility hypothesis in ASL, but there has not been quantitative data from other SLs to test the generalization to other languages., Method: The authors investigated the kinematic parameters of predicates in Croatian Sign Language ( Hrvatskom Znakovnom Jeziku [HZJ])., Results: Kinematic features of verb signs were affected both by event structure of the predicate (semantics) and phrase position within the sentence (prosody)., Conclusion: The data demonstrate that kinematic features of motion in HZJ verb signs are recruited to convey morphological and prosodic information. This is the first crosslinguistic motion capture confirmation that specific kinematic properties of articulator motion are grammaticalized in other SLs to express linguistic features.

This paper presents the results of research on information structure and word order in narrative sentences taken from signed short stories in Croatian Sign Language (HZJ). The basic word order in HZJ is SVO. Factors that result in other word orders include: reversible arguments, verb categories, locative constructions, contrastive focus, and prior context. Word order in context depends on communication rules, based on the relationship between old (theme) and new (rheme) information, which is predicated of the theme. In accordance with Grice's Maxim of Quantity, HZJ has a tendency to omit old information, or to reduce it to pronominal status. If old information is overtly signed in non-pronominal form, it precedes the rheme. We have observed a variety of sign language mechanisms that are used to show items of reduced contextual significance: use of assigned spatial location for previously introduced referents; eyegaze to indicate spatial location of previously introduced referents; use of the non-dominant hand for backgrounded information; use of a special category of signs known as classifiers as pronominal indicators of previously introduced referents; and complex noun phrases that allow a single occurrence of a noun to simultaneously serve multiple functions. These devices permit information to be conveyed without the need for separate signs for every referent, which would create longer constructions that could be taxing to both production and perception. The results of this research are compatible with well-known word order generalizations - HZJ has its own grammar, independent of spoken language, like any other sign language.

The 12 members of the MAGE gene family encode tumor-specific antigens that are recognized by autologous cytotoxic T lymphocytes. The MAGE genes are expressed not only in melanoma but in other malignant tumors as well. There is, however, little information on their expression in thyroid carcinomas. We studied the expression of the MAGE-3 antigen in human thyroid carcinomas to explore the possibility of specific immunotherapy using MAGE peptides. Tumor tissue samples of thyroid carcinomas were obtained from 60 patients. Standard pathohistologic analysis followed by immunohistochemistry analysis of MAGE-3 expression was performed in all patients. The overall expression rate of MAGE-3 antigen in thyroid carcinomas was 65%. According to histological types of thyroid carcinomas, expression rate of MAGE-3 antigen was as follows: 0% in anaplastic, 20% in medullary, 29% in follicular, and 80% in papillary thyroid carcinomas (p < 0.01). On the other hand, significantly higher expression of MAGE-3 antigen was observed in classical subtypes of papillary thyroid carcinomas and in small papillary tumors sized to 1 cm in diameter. These findings demonstrated that MAGE-3 antigen expression seems to be particularly high in the small, typical papillary carcinomas, thus suggesting that MAGE-3 gene abnormality is an early step in thyroid cancer progression.
